"nbc 10 news" starts now. and right now at 11:00, the philadelphia police are searching for a gunman who shot one of their own. the 24-year-old officer was hurt last night as he was trying to stop a car jacking. right now he's in the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery. we have live team coverage. "nbc 10's" deanna durante has the latest on the investigation. we begin this morning with pamela osborne who's outside of penn present hospital. pamela, fill us in. >> reporter: vai, we just got an update from one of the police officials who was here visiting the officer.

he is doing well and in good spirits. police patrol vehicles parked outside of the emergency room entrance of course is where that officer was taken after he was shot by an armed suspect last night. at this time he remains here getting treatment. throughout the morning we saw officers from the 18th district going in and out of presbyterian hospital where hours earlier one of their own was taken after being shot. it happened just before 9:00 sunday evening. two-year philadelphia police officer james mccullough was on patrol with his partner in the area of 59th and market when they were stopped by a woman who said two men were breaking into her car. officers spotted the two men trying to run away from the woman's vehicle. officer mccullough tackled one of the men to the ground and was immediately shot in the leg by the suspect. police say mccullough fired three shots at the suspect as he ran away. he was bleeding heavily but was able to apply a turn to any ket

applying pressure to the wound. >> this was an incidence where someone flagged them down. this is what they do. it's a dangerous job but they do it with pride and professionalism. very thankful that he's going to be okay. >> mccullough has a 2-year-old daughter and a fiance. again, he is expected to be okay. of course, we'll be out here monitoring the situation. we'll let you know just as soon as he is released from the hospital. reporting live i'm pamela osborne, "nbc 10 news." >> pamela, thank you. live team coverage continues now with "nbc 10's" deanna durante at police headquarters. what have you gathered? >> reporter: we do know what is standard in situations where police officers are shot is that the homicide division has the lead in this case. we know that homicide investigators have been up all night here. what we've learned from investigative sources, there were two separate crimes they tell us that led up to the

shooting. they say there was a male who was a victim of a robbery or robbery attempt and then there was a woman who was a victim of the car jacking attempt and it's when the officer approached these men that those shots were fired. we do know that one man is in custody, was taken here to police headquarters. it's unclear how much information if any he's giving investigators at this point. we can tell you investigators are looking closely at surveillance video, video very close to the scene of that car jacking scene and investigators right now are on the hunt for the person they believe fired those shots injuring officer mccullough. we are expecting word of a news conference coming sometime today with updates on this case. police tell us they are planning a public briefing but have not given an exact time for it. that is the very latest reporting live here at police headquarters. >> deanna. thank you. meanwhile, stay with "nbc 10" and the "nbc 10" app for continuing coverage as we try to gather more information on this shooting of officer mccullough.

breaking news now just into "nbc 10." u.s. officials say they will send 200 more troops and a number of apache helicopters to iraq to assist in the fight against isis. defense secretary ash carter is in iraq right now. he said the new forces will be large little used to abide iraqi forces close to the front lines. the announcement comes with the push to retaining the city of mosul. they will likely be army special forces. and a reminder tonight, you can watch "nbc nightly news" with lester holt reporting from the middle east. he'll have an exclusive interview with ash carter here at 6:00. an accident involving a school bus and a car left one person hurt in new castle county. sky force 10 over the scene of old baltimore pike and albe drive. there were two dents on the bus but none of them were hurt. a person in the car was injured.

no word on what caused the crash. a man police say shot a 4-year-old philadelphia girl to death faced an arraignment early this morning. maurice phillips is charged with thirds degree murder, involuntary manslaughter and endangering the wealth of a child. he's the boyfriend of the child's mother. it was first believed the 4-year-old girl was shot inside her kensington home by a 5-year-old sibling but police say phillips confessed telling them he was playing with the gun when it accidentally went off. the little girl's mother, tara riddick posted this tribute to her daughter on facebook. it includes several baby pictures and also this message. you will be missed, tahira phillips, i love you with all my heart. meanwhile, firefighters put out a house fire in upper darby, delaware county early this morning. here's how it looked as the flames and the smoke tore through this house on ardmore avenue. this happened at 2:30 this morning. a family bought the home in

january and were in the process of fixing it up. they were almost finished and now the home completely destroyed. luckily no one was hurt. now your "nbc 10" first alert weather. it's sunny and warm throughout our area. as you take a live look at boathouse row in philadelphia. it's a perfect day to be outside. many of you are. divide families from deportation. the justices are expected to decide by late june. the presidential candidates will set their sights on pennsylvania this week ahead of the april 26th primary. tomorrow ted cruz will track the primary results from pa p. sanders will speak at rec hall around 7:00 in the evening. sanders will try to rival hillary clinton to make a campaign stop in philadelphia on wednesday. we don't have the details just yet. once we get them, we'll pass them on to you. we are now eight days away from the pennsylvania primary. the pa polls open at 7:00 a.m. on tuesday, april 26th. delaware holds its primary on that day as well. new jersey voters will go to the polls on tuesday, june 7th.

boston marathon is underway at this hour. distance runners are taking part in the 120th version of the event. this is the third time it's been run since the deadly bombings at the finish line in 2013. boston's police commissioner says all proper security prekaugpr precautions are in place for today's event. severe storms slammed parts of southeast texas overnight. heavy rain and strong winds roll through the houston area. heavy rain was expected to continue there through the evening. severe weather forced schools throughout the area to close today. heavy rains brought widespread flooding. the storms knocked out power to thousands of homes and businesses. a large spring storm dropped several feet of snow on parts of colorado this weekend. some of the deepest snow was measured southwest of denver. more than 40 inches fell in the

the spanish red cross said there are thousands. the aftermath of a quake, a fire broke out. local media reports say there was a fire. across the pacific in japan, two massive earthquakes killed at least 42 people and injured 1,000 others. both japan and ecuador are located on a seismically activated ring of fire. large quakes separated by such distances probably are not to be related. u.s. air lifted water and bread, ready-to-eat food and other supplies to southern japan where the quake struck. the area had been cut off by landslides and damaged roads following two powerful earthquakes. goods were unloaded by the waiting japanese self-defense personnel. police and aviation experts in london are looking into reports of a mid-air collision between a british airways passenger jet and an unmanned

drone. as nbc's tom costello shows us, this is the scenario that authorities have been worried about. >> it happened near the busiest airport in europe. just after noon sunday a british airways jet reported a far too close encounter with an unmanned drone, so close the pilot reported that it collided in air. it had 135 passengers and it landed safely. engineers on the ground found no damage to the plane and returned it to service. if confirmed, it would be among the first known collisions involving a passenger plane and an unmanned drone. other authorities have been warning you. we have the interaction between an unmanned aircraft.

>> last year alone the faa reported more than 1400 close calls between drones and planes in the u.s. >> we just had something fly over us. i don't know if it was a drone or a balloon. it came quick. >> the fear, a drone could take out an engine just as a flock of geese went into the hudson river seven years ago. at virginia tech university researchers simulated a situation. the result, a catastrophic failure that could damage the engine and bring down a plane. they're required to register their drone with the faa. it's illegal to fly it within 500 miles of the airport. >> a drone was reported on the runway 27 right center line. i'm not picking up anything on radar. >> but the close calls keep coming. >> that was nbc's tom costello reporting. to prevent an accident, there's talk of requiring drones to carry tracking devices that would block them from flying

engineering, wanted to give you the jump in and build a car and working on it in all different aspects. then to compete. i'm going to be the race driver, ten laps around city blocks. >> wow. >> alex, explain to me how this vehicle -- you designed it, how it works. >> so it is made out of fiberglass. it has a hydrogen engine and very light weight. the driver is one of the heaviest parts of the vehicle, actually. basically the whole competition is about making vehicles that are energy efficient helping firemen. it's a great car, very fulfilling to work on as a whole. >> what's a time frame for either of you in seeing something like this go from the developmental stage it is now to the public? >> there are already cars that

exist. what makes ours different is the size and construction. the efficiency is something that changes gradually over time. eventually all cars, engines, it will switch to more energy efficient model. >> what's the most challenging part of what you do? >> probably making sure that everything is running smoothly. like any project, you run into hitches. different things don't work correctly. overcoming those issues and trying to figure out what's wrong and making sure it works correctly. >> what's the funnest part? is this the thing you leave your other homework aside because you want to work on this? >> yeah. yeah. driving it is a lot of fun. >> i bet. how did you get the job? did you draw the short straw? >> shortest person, lightest weight. >> very nice. >> we've all driven at some point. the rest of us have to stick our feet over the car to fit in. we look crammed in the car. >> reach out your hand. i want to touch your hand so

today. right around 70 degrees tomorrow and then it's in the 60s. a similar cooldown expected for the lehigh valley, 63 degrees. sunshine nice and bright in south jersey and at the jersey shore. look at the temperature difference, 10 degree difference because of the wind at the shore. 68 degrees. tomorrow doesn't seem like it made sense. the temperatures going up at the jersey shore. that's because even though that's cooler air blowing into our area, it's going to be warmer than what's coming off of the ocean today. then the chilliest day will be wednesday. delaware, not bad. 76 degrees. by wednesday afternoon, 67 degrees. but dry for the entire period. satellite and radar, nothing in our area. it's a drenching rain that's part of the system well to the west. look at the houston area. they just have tremendous rainfall. more than 11 inches has fallen in the last 24 hours in parts of

houston, texas, and it's still falling in that area. it's part of a system that is going to give us a chance of some showers later in the week. the next couple days completely dry but clouds will be building to the west and by late tomorrow night, that's 10:00 you'd see those showers still to the west moving into the midwest. then it will be very slow to move our way. by late wednesday night still well to the west. by early thursday morning we'll start to see the first signs of some showers in western pennsylvania but we will still be dry. it's the very end of the work week that rain comes into our area. so, here's the warmup. there we are peaking at 80 degrees. second time this month we will hit 80 degrees. happened on the first of the month. tomorrow cooler with the winds. the chilliest day will be wednesday. here comes a warmup ahead of the chance of showers on friday. that chance continues into the weekend. just a chance of some early showers on saturday. 68 degrees and then we dry out and right back up to 70 degrees
