katie: i'm katie mcginty and i approve this message. that breaking news, a new jersey school district is in mourning after an accident leaves a superintendent dead. robbinsville public schools is in mercer county. they canceled all classes after school activities today and tomorrow after superintendent dr. steve mayor was hit and killed while jogging near his home on robbinsville and edinburgh road early this morning. robbinsville's mayor said a 17-year-old high school senior was behind the wheel of the car that struck dr. mayer. so far, no charges have been filed. he leaves behind a wife and three sons. he was jogging with his dog at the time. his dog was also hit and killed. police are currently investigating the accident. they're set to hold a news

conference in about a half hour along with representatives from the prosecutor's office and the school district. we'll bring it to you live when it happens. the man accused of shooting a philadelphia officer sunday night is expected to face arraignment later today. 23-year-old scott griffin is accused of shooting officer james mccullough when the officer interrupted a car jacking that griffin and another man allegedly carried out. we have learned from court documents he has 14 prior arrests for drugs, weapons, and theft. griffin had been in jail less than a week ago, but he was let go after a judge decided a lack of evidence because of several witnesses did not show up to testify against griffin. of course, stay with nbc10 and the app for continuing coverage of the shooting of officer james mccullough. >> philadelphia police are looking for the person who slashed a woman's neck. the victim collapsed in fra frankford avenue just before 3:00 a.m. she's in the hospital in

critical condition. investigators are still trying to identify her and they're knocking on doors looking for witnesses. >> firefighters are looking to put out hot spots after a warehouse fire in cumberland county. this started at 2:30 this morning. one firefighter was hurt but is expected to be okay. it took firefighters more than two hours to get the flames under control. officials are investigating the fire as suspicious. and the quest for the cup brought out the worst in some flyers fans. take a look. >> show some class. that was the flyers public address announcer scolding flyers fans. this hit caused frustrations to boil over. off the ice. fans tossing free wrist bands they received in the beginning of the game. wayne simmonds even asked the fans to settle down.

the flyers face an uphill battle in their quest for the cup after dropping their third straight game against the washington capitals. the caps scored five power play goals on they way to a 6-1 win last night. washington now has an 3-0 lead in the series. they play again tomorrow night. fans showed their frustration as the team was pushed to the brink of elimination. pamela osborn is live for us with reaction from the flyers faithful. hi, pamela. >> vai, good morning. there were several disruptions to last night's game. keep in mind those wristbands you mentioned they were throwing out onto the ice. those were a part of a memorial tribute for late owner ed snider. we talked with radio hosts at 97.5 the fanatic, they tell us even some of the veteran announcers were shocked by what they saw. >> for things to kind of turn the way they did is a black eye on the fan base. >> the phone lines over at 97.5

the fanatic were ringing nonstop this morning with flyers fans and onlookers wanting to weigh in on last night's less than flattering display from a few. >> just because you lose doesn't give you the right to act like they did. i thought it was a childish way the fan base acted. >> jason of wpen has been covering the games from the wells fargo center for ten years. even he was surprised by what he saw. flyers fans chucking ed snider memorial bracelets given to them for a special pregame remembrance onto the ice, and at players of the opposing team. >> when your sports team doesn't perform well like this, it doesn't give you the right to perpetuate the stereotype of the philadelphia sports fan. >> at one point, the announcer even scolded fans, telling them to have a little class. >> i understand frustration when you get there and you don't win. but this is just the beginning of a process for the flyers.

glen hurricane schwartz is here with the forecast. >> we have another warm day, maybe not quite as warm as yesterday, but as you can see, temperatures already into the mid-70s in much of the area. vineland, wilmington, dover, 66 degrees. 77 in atlantic city. allentown at 67 degrees. but we have some issues because of wind and low humidity. the fire danger has increased. and there's a red flag warning as a result of that from noon to 8:00 p.m. across the entire area. and these are the current winds, sustained at 21 miles per hour in philadelphia. 17 in wilmington, 16 in coatesville, and in atlantic city. that's the wind issue. now, as we go into south jersey, one of the areas that's most vulnerable to fires, you can see, the relative humidity is extremely low, especially in the interior from places less than

30% and will be going down even more as we go through the afternoon. medford, only 33%. oswego lake, 33%. carlfield, only 28%. the low humidity, the dry ground and winds create the problem. well, we're warm, but not quite as warm as we have been. the temperatures, 82 yesterday. about 77 for the high temperature today. there is cooler air starting tomorrow. we'll see how long that lasts and when we get much needed rain with the forecast in just a few minutes. >> all right, thank you, glenn. today, new jersey officials are due back in court in the fight over atlantic city's financial crisis. the state education department is suing ac to get tax money the city collected on behalf of the schools. the city still owes the state more than $4 million that was due last friday. the state wants atlantic city to freeze spending until it hands over the rest of the money.

now to decision 2016, as voters head to the polls ipnew york, a new survey is showing where the race stands nationwide. the newest tracking poll shows

donald trump remains the top pick of republican voters. but ohio governor john kasich has gained the most ground over the last week. trump still has a support of 46% of gop voters. texas senator ted cruz is down two points from last week to fall to 28%. and kasich now has the support of 19% of republicans. that's up three points from last week. on the democratic side, results have remained steady as hillary clinton leads rival bernie sanders 50% to 43%. nbc news national correspondent tracie potts has more on how today's primary could shape the campaign moving forward. >> who are you voting for? >> easy decision. >> donald trump voting in new york city this morning. a new nbc news survey monkey poll gives trump an 18-point national lead. up more than 30 in new york. >> no new yorker can vote for ted cruz, and no new yorker can vote for kasich. >> john kasich, a distant number

the encryption debate. the house subcommittee on encryption is also hearing from a penn engineering professor. apple and the fbi clashed over encryption technology earlier this year as the feds took the tech giant to court in an effort to get them to help unlock an iphone belonging to one of the san bernardino shooters. the fbi eventually unlocked the device with the reported help of an israeli firm. >> well, we have a variety of conditions across our neighborhoods right now. temperatures in the 70s in the philadelphia area. parts of south jersey. but only in the 60s in the lehigh valley, as some of the cooler air that we have been talking about has come in. you can see we have a northwest wind. that means a land breeze ashore. that's why it's so warm at the jersey shore, compared to what we saw yesterday in the low 60s.

now it's 77 in ocean city, 76 in atlantic city. and even near 80 in mays landing. at this hour, but the problem that we have is the combination of the dry ground, the low humidity, and the gusty winds creating that fire danger. that's why the red-flag warning. we showed you the humidities in new jersey a little while ago. this is in the suburbs outside philadelphia. in pennsylvania. avondale, 36%. kenneth square, 35%. exten, 38%. the lower the humidity, the greater the fire danger, the easier it is for fires to spread. for washington, 39%. doylestown, 36%. and those numbers generally come down during the afternoon. and during the afternoon, we expect these winds of 15 to 20 miles per hour to help stir things up. so it's warm. it's dry. and we still have the issue of the pollen.

and the pollen, very high today, tomorrow, thursday. the only break we can get is on friday when there may be some showers moving into the area. no showers around now. but there is some moisture back to the west. some clouds in the ohio valley, and some showers out toward st. louis and down to memphis. this is not a real strong system. this is the remnants of some of that moisture that hit houston. but it's all breaking up. and we're not going to get anything like what they had in houston. the forecast for tomorrow across our neighborhoods, you can see, not nearly as warm as today. 68 in fairmount. 69 in west chester. newtown, 69 degrees. only 63 degrees in bethlehem for the highs. by the way, you can see the high temperatures for the next seven days scroll constantly at the

bottom of your screen. and this continues with every weather cast. at the shore, it's going to be only in the low 60s. we're talking about upper 70s today. so that is quite a difference. and over the next ten days, we see a little bit cooler weather on wednesday, and then we start to warm up thursday before we have that chance of showers on friday. the weekend generally looking dry. but that's our shot. that's what we need, some rain, with the ground so dry and the pollen so high. >> all right, thank you, glenn. a walk on the wild side. a woman is seen hopping the fence and going inside the zoo's tiger exhibit. what the zoo is saying about the incident.

the philadelphia international festival of the arts is under way. it's a celebration of art in a variety of forms including a brand-new project that focuses on veterans of colors in the last two wars in iraq and afghanistan. holding it down, the veterans dream project includes music, poetry, song, video, and visual art. mike is a poet and performer and one of the collaborators behind the show and he's here with mike miller, a war veteran from chester. mike and mike. let's start with you. tell us about the show and why you decided to focus on veterans and their stories.

>> well, it's a show that we began researching in 2009. we had been working on three shows actually, and this is the third in what is essentially a trilogy that was born out of looking at people's color and a long time ago during 9/11. and then when we arrived at looking at veterans because of the work we had already done. and we just realized that something -- we wanted to find a way to make a bridge of communication between veteran and non-veteran, between those who have been through the experiences like people like mike had been through and those who haven't because we're all going to live with the memories of the conflict. >> and we're all going to live together here. is this more to help the audience understand what you, men and women have been through, or is it for you guys to help

you guys cope with what you have lived through? >> i think it has, like, a dual purpose. i think it definitely helps us deal with things. it's a form of therapy in a way, but i also believe that it gives people external of the experience a chance to truly understand, because you often hear people talk about things such as wars, suicide, and things of that nature, but when you get to get it from, like, that first-hand basis, you get a better understanding. we get to do it from our words. and it's not like someone is standing there and speaking for you. so people get to make a better connection. >> mike, give us more about, because you served in afghanistan, right? >> yes. >> tell us more about your experience and holding it down, what it's been like for you, what it's done for you. >> at first, walking in, i was a little nervous because i know when i write down my thoughts, i try to be, you know, really honest about what i'm feeling. and being honest about how you

stronger winds, which we haven't had lately, and low relative humidity, allowed fires to spread quickly. and so it's something to be concerned about. you can see the wind directions out of the northwest. the wind speeds, 15 to 20 miles per hour. and we have shown you the low humidities in other parts of the area. right now, we'll go up towards the lehigh valley. allentown is 64 degrees right now. and low humidity. and that is another one of the reasons that the entire area is under this red-flag warning. it's warm but not quite as warm across the area today. at least most of the area, after the 82 yesterday. it's still mighty warm for this time of the year. the average high is 65. we'll be closer to that during the day tomorrow. and then, of course, we look for any kind of moisture. there's nothing close by. but there are some showers back to the west. we'll see when they're coming

with the ten-day forecast coming up in a few minutes. >> all right, thank you, glenn. >> this morning, houston and surrounding counties are a disaster zone. the city soaked after torrential rains triggered historic flooding. janet shamlian is in houston with more. >> reporter: it was an unprecedented rain event in houston, as much as 17 inches overnight, triggering flooding like the city hasn't seen in many years, and the fact it was so widespread, the warning from the national weather service was the largest flood warning that it had ever issued. 6 million people in the path of danger. today, the death toll stands at five. all of those came from vehicles that had gone into high water at the height of the storm. no rain right now, but there is rain in the forecast for later today. and the ground in southeast texas is saturated. the bayous are swollen, and any amount of precipitation in this area will trigger further

researchers say working the night shift can affeldt a woman's ability to function more than a man's. a study from a british sleep research center found when men and women sleep out of sync with their internal clocks, women's moods are more negatively effected. researchers think the study could have big implications for women who work night shifts in professions such as nursing and law enforcement. a couple women in the studio nodding their heads. >> a new study reveals workers at outpatient health care facilities often fail to wash their hands. employees skipped hand washing more than a third of the time. workers also failed to safely disinfection or discard syringes in about a third of the cases. well, it turns out las vegas isn't the only place to catch celebrities at the main event. philadelphia is getting ready for a star-studded event,

evening of boxing, entertainment, and a chance to see at least a few famous faces. the first ever night at the foits, an important cause, and here with us, joe hann jr., and also rosslyn mcpherson, the president and ceo of the urban league of philadelphia. bernard hopkins was supposed to be here but couldn't make it out this morning. living in delaware. probably had a good reason. we'll see bernard there that night. >> absolutely. >> tell me about this. it's the first of its kind here in philadelphia, right? >> it is. we've been doing then gloves tournament for the last 20-some years. and we had a gym member who is a fellow by the name of bobby keys who is the chairman of the urban of philadelphia that trains in our gym. >> big boxing guy. >> he loves it. he caught the bug. he heard about our golden gloves tournament and said, listen, i got this great idea. why don't we take this golden gloves tournament that you have and kind of blow it up into a

really great night of entertainment and celebrity and networking. and he then introduced us to ros, and we sold ros on the idea, and so on april 30th, we've got night at the fights for the very first time, featuring golden gloves and celebrities and music entertainment and it's going to be an unbelievable night. >> i'm going to be there because if it's boxing, i'm coming by. we're looking at the d.a. here, seth williams. he has his gloves on. tell me why this is so important for the urban league of philadelphia? >> well, you know, in this day and age, nonprofits have to do all kinds of things to raise money to support our mission. and we are particularly committed to young people. so this was an opportunity toner with several other nonprofits to raise money for a great cause. and i have been enjoying the partnership aspect of this whole planning. >> and joe, you know that i have been in the ring once or twice.

burr naund hernard hopkins trai. tell me what he's going to be doing? >> he will be coming out that. he's, first of all, one of my favorite all-time fighters. obviously, his longevity in the sport and his championship pedigree, it speaks for itself. we're very lucky to have him train at the joe hann boxing gym because not only is he still chasing a championship and still wants to -- in his 50s -- but for us, what we found out is that he's a tremendous ambassador for just sports and to kids. and we see that every day in our gym. it's not unusual for me to walk into the gym and sneak back to the corner and i see bernard back here with this young guy who is just 10 years old, and bernard is showing him how to wrap his hands or whispering in his ear when he's hitting the speed bag. i said to my dad once, it's amazing a professional athlete of his stature gives back to the

jose canseco in one round. and he is pretty good. in philadelphia, weather is pretty good, if you like the warm and dry stuff. and 75 degrees already. it's a little bit cooler in the suburbs of pennsylvania and also in the lehigh valley. it's cooler air has started to come down, but not too far. we have been showing you the relative humidity because it's so critical today. the humidity and wind being factors in the increased fire danger. that's why there's a red-flag warning for the whole area. as you can see, glasgow and delaware, only 28% humidity. 32%, wilmington, 34%. claymont, 32%. odessa, 28%. and as we go farther to the south, kenton at 30%. felton at 30% as well. and look, even rehoboth beach, only 24%. as the relative humidity goes down, it gets easier for fires

to spread. and there's the wind, too. you have 15 to 20-mile-per-hour winds expected during the afternoon throughout the area. the other thing is it's dry. it's been dry. it's going to stay dry today. that's for sure. as you can see, a few showers back to the west. way west. it's going to take a little while for any of that to get here. now, for tomorrow, yeah, it's going to stay sunny, but it's not going to be as warm. temperatures in the 60s, even 65 degrees in phoenixville for the high. newtown at 69. easton at 69. redding may hit 70 degrees. temperatures still may be a bit above average during the day tomorrow. 62 in atlantic city. okay, they're in the upper 70s during the day today. so it is quite a difference. let's see what's going to happen as we go through the next couple of days. no precipitation around for a

while. there's tuesday at 11:00. now as we go into wednesday, there's not much coming. there's a few showers into ohio and central pennsylvania by noon on thursday. so there's nothing before thursday night at the least. the earliest we can see anything is thursday night. most likely on friday, with our ten-day forecast, you can see generally dry till then. 77 for the high today. 68 degrees on wednesday, which is still a little bit above average. so as it warms back up, thursday and friday, we're talking about temperatures into the mid-70s again. and the latest computer models not really that enthusiastic about widespread significant rain that would really knock the pollen out of the air and reduce the fire threat. looks like it's going to be basically dry over the weekend. temperatures pretty mild, and as
