nbc 10 news starts now. ♪ this is what it sounds like when doves cry ♪ music fans here and around the world are remembering the sound of prince. an autopsy is plan for today for the iconic singer who died yesterday at the age of 57. remembering a young life lost. students at a wilmington high school go back to class today after a fellow student died following a fight. and tracking showers. take a look at nbc 10's first alert radar. the rain is moving in from the west. today will not be a washout. it's 4:00 a.m. we made it to friday. good morning, this is "nbc 10 news today." i'm tracy davidson. let's get right to meteorologist bill henley with his first alert forecast, tracking the timing of that rain, bill? >> it's completely dry in our area right now.

that will likely change during the day today. but we're not looking at a lot of rainfall coming in, though there is a possibility of heavy downpours with thunderstorms. right now it's in western pennsylvania, pittsburgh seeing light rain showers into charleston, west virginia as well. light to moderate showers moving through west virginia. it has a ways to go before it gets to us. we finally do have a chance for showers. that's your seven-day forecast. one seven day for each part of our area. it's mild in philadelphia, 62 degrees, a light breeze in the pennsylvania suburbs and south jersey starting off at 60 degrees and near 60 for the lehigh valley and delaware. during the day today, sunshine will be fading. we'll get sunshine to start with. look at these temperatures, taking off near 80 degrees for delaware. a chance of showers and thunderstorms, especially this afternoon, up to 80 degrees. we'll get sunshine to start with in philadelphia and then some umbrellas will be going up later today. we'll go through the futurecast hour by hour to track those showers when i'm back in ten

minutes. let's check in with jessica boyington who has your first alert traffic. jessie? >> we're watching that ongoing construction on the vine street expressway, bill, on this friday. right around 24th street is where we're looking right now, as you can see, we have flashing lights up ahead. that's police officers sitting in the exit ramp blocking them off so traffic can't pass through. right now, the vine street expressway is closed in between the schuylkill and broad street for that construction that should be clear around 5:00 this morning. if you get to the schuylkill expressway or if you're taking the schuylkill into center city, you will be fine up to the vine. 13 minutes headed eastbound. no problems on 95 southbound and the blue route looks okay. mass transit running on time or close to schedule for the most part, as you can see, no problems or delays there. more çupdates in the next ten. this morning, people around the world and here in our area are remembering music legend prince. ♪ this is what it sounds like when doves cry ♪

>> "when doves cry" is prinone prince's best known songs. he died yesterday at the age of 57. he soared in the music industry in the '70s. a male not breathing. >> prince was found unresponse knife an elevator at his home in minnesota. emergency personnel were unable to revive him. details on the cause of death are still unknown. a medical examiner plans to perform an autopsy today. prince performed at van yews in philadelphia throughout his career. the electric factory in callowhill paid tribute to the music icon who played there in 1998. that was 18 years ago yesterday. at wdas fans called in to express their grief. patty jackson was on the air when news broke of prince's death. she even shared the moment with democratic presidential

side just after 10:30 last night on whitaker avenue in crescentville. witnesses tell police the motorcycle went through a red light. the driver of the car was not hurt. today students return to class at the wilmington high school that was locked down for hours yesterday. a 16-year-old student died after a fight with two other students. nbc 10's pamela osborne is live in wilmington. pamela, there's a lot of grief for that school community and the entire community this morning. >> tracy, there most certainly is. that fight happened inside of a girl's bathroom here at the howard high school of technology. now, it was here that students at the steps were gathered last night to console one another after the loss of their 16-year-old classmate and to show their support for her family. there were a lot of tears, a lot of hugs, a lot of people asking why. here's what we know right now. it was somewhere around 8:15

yesterday morning when the victim, a 16-year-old sophomore student, was assaulted by two other girls. the fight happened out of sight in a girl's bathroom. the victim was so badly injured that she had to be air lifted to the hospital where she died of her injuries. the entire school was put on lockdown soon after school was dismissed as administrators and police investigators took things from there. we spoke to one student at that vigil last night. i'll let her describeç to you w people are feeling. >> people upset and crying and it's something that really needs to change. this event is so horrible and it's touched so many people. it's something that can never happen again. >> reporter: police spent hours collecting evidence, interviewing witnesses and two girls who they believe may have been involved in that fight. students are telling us they're hearing this fight was over a boy. police have not announced any charges yet. an autopsy will be performed so

bernie sanders is finished. we'll be covering each candidate's visit to our area today. be sure to tap the nbc 10 app for updates on the campaign trail. a coalition of clergy, politicians, civil rights ovals and unions will call on philadelphiaens to vote no on a proposal to abolish traffic court. the coalition opposes the elimination of traffic court, calling it an attack on citizens' rights. those in favor say abolishing traffic report will cut corruption, following an fbi raid in 2011, seven judges and a court administrator were convicted of ticket fix be. a mercer county community will come together for a service for superintendent steven mayer. we're learning more about what happened in the moments after the car hit and killed mayer. the 17-year-old driver called 911 tuesday morning while parked

outside pond road middle school in robbinsville. prosecutors say she told dispatchers she believed her car hit someone on robbinsville edinburg road while she was on her way to the high school. mayer and his dog died following the crash. classes in robbinsville resumed yesterday after a two-day closure to mourn his death. schools there are closed today to observe passover. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> it's dry and a mild morning. upper 50s for lehigh valley and the pennsylvania suburbs. philadelphia is at 62 degrees. and south jersey, very low 60s at the shore and interior new jersey. some of the suburbs have dropped down, a little bit cooler. there's really no cold air this morning. west bradford is 60 degrees. lincoln university, these numbers will be climbing. you may have noticed it through

the week. our seven-day forecast at the bottom of the screen, one seven day for each part of our area has showed that warming trend. we'll see the temperatures peak near ç80 degrees in philadelph. the pennsylvania suburbs into the upper 70s. it comes with a chance of much-needed rainfall. so far we're totally dry in philadelphia. the shower activity is moving into western pennsylvania. just light rain showers in pittsburgh. got a long way to go before it gets to us. we're mainly dry this morning. but a chance umbrellas will be going up, even the possibility of a thunderstorm later today. this is the futurecast. you can see those showers in western pennsylvania. by lunch time at noon, those showers are moving into delaware and the pennsylvania suburbs into the lehigh valley. this is some light rainfall. it will continue moving as we go into the afternoon hours, the afternoon commute. look at the showers at the shore and into delaware and there's still a possibility we'll see showers into tonight and

possibly even tomorrow morning. there's just a chance of that. mainly what we're going to see is a big warmup ahead of any showers. philadelphia 80 degrees this afternoon. look at chestnut hill, near 80. the pennsylvania suburbs, there's that big warmup. the clouds take over. get some sunshine in the morning and a chance of showers and the possibility of a thunderstorm this afternoon for doylestown, 78 degrees. the lehigh valley, 76, reading you'll get sunshine before the clouds take over. and look at the warmup for south jersey. glassboro and haddonfield, up to 80 degrees. sunshine this morning and the clouds take over this afternoon with a chance of showers and a slight chance of a thunderstorm at the shore, cooler, you won't see the 80 degree mark. a chance of late-day and evening showers and in delaware, wilmington 80 degrees this afternoon. so close to it for dover and dewey beach. keep that umbrella handy during the afternoon and evening hours. and if you are making weekend plans, there is a chance that we'll see some scattered showers

into the first part of the weekend, very first part of the weekend, then we'll be clearing out. philadelphia, likely dry for saturday. after we hit 80 today, breezy and cooler, 70 degrees the high temperature on saturday. sunday, lots of sunshine. it will be completely dry for our area. look at the ten-day forecast for your advanced planning when i'm back in ten minutes. let's check your friday ride to work, starting with the vine street expressway. first alert traffic reporter jessica boyington has that. jessica, what are you seeing? >> we are watching that ongoing construction. there and active on the scene until 5:00 this morning, we'll have the vine street expressway closed in between the schuylkill and broad street east and westbound. you can see some police activity, flashing lights up there blocking off some of the ramps. you want to plan that into your morning at least for right now. there's a disabled vehicle in pottstown on butler avenue and north washington street to watch out for. more construction, this is on kelly drive eastbound between hunting park avenue and fountain

philadelphia daily news sporing the headline "the doves cry" to remember the music legend. here's the front page of today's new york daily news with a play off of prince's popular singing from the 1992 "love symbol" album. "new york" magazine giving us an early look at next week's cover, going purple rain. people gathered for several spontaneous parties. they danced through the nighs in the streets of brooklyn while prince's music blared from speakers. director spike lee organized this event. more tributes to prince coming up at 4:30. in other news now, the new jersey forest fire service is keeping a close eye on the pinelands. as recent dry conditions have made the preserve prime for brush fires. but fire officials are also calming new fears. raids by a national magazine article that predicts a wildfire disaster and inferno in the pinelands. certified forester and pinelands

resident bob williams shared his concern in a new article in "rolling stone" magazine. he question wlz new jersey could become the scene of america's worst wildfire disaster. the story suggests that a dangerous combination of springtime weather conditions could lead to an apocalypse in the garden state. he says a wildfire could explode into an inferno, moving through heavy populated areas. >> it's been a long time since we've had a big fire. the forest keeps growing and accumulating fuels. >> i think it's not as dramatic asç portrayed because of the prevention efforts and our staff. >> state officials admit if all the right elements came into play, a doomsday-like fire could break out. they insist the forest fire service and all of its partners are more than prepared to fight any fire in the pinelands. 4:17. happening today in kalamazoo, michigan, an uber driver accused

of killing six people will be in court. a judge will determine if jason dalton is mentally capable of assisting in his defense. prosecutors say dalton shot people outside an apartment building, a restaurant and a car dealership in february. two victims survived. the flyers return to the isis tonight as they once again try to keep their quest for the cup alive. but they will be without scott lawton, who was injured in game four. he was been released from the hospital. he took a nasty spill into the boards and a crew carried him off the ice on a stretcher. he spent the night in the hospital. he will not accompany the team to washington, however. the flyers need a win tonight over the capitals to continue their season. if you can't make it to d.c., gather with other flyers fans at the official game watch party at xfinity live. they'll be showing the matchup

on their 32-foot screen. puck drops at 7:00. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. 19 minutes after 4:00. 63 degrees here at nbc 10. if you're heading out, we have a mild morning. a real break from the chill we've seen the last few days. it's a dry start to the day. but it doesn't look like it's going to be dry all day. clouds will be moving in this morning, showers likely to arrive this afternoon. even in chances of showers if you're heading out tonight. carry an umbrella, just to play it safe. it's not going to be an all-day rainfall or all-evening rainfall. there will be scattered showers and possibly even a thunderstorm around. here's where we're starting. 62 degrees in philadelphia, south jersey is 60. delaware and the pennsylvania suburbs in the 50s right now. and cooling down. nowhere near as chilly as yesterday. 61 degrees in west mount arie. 62 degrees in society hill. look at the 60s for bustleton,

winchester park and fox chase. that's our starting point. as you may have noticed by the seven-day forecast scrolling at the bottom of the screen, we will see quite a warmup, near 80 degrees in philadelphia this afternoon. most of the rest of the area will get close to that. 81 degrees somerton. this is our neighborhood forecast, radnor, 77 and a big warmup for easton, 78 degrees. each of these locations may have sunshine but also has some showers and even a chance of some thunderstorms. that is going to be staying with us for the day today. hamilton township, 80 degrees. the showers move in this afternoon and into the evening. atlantic city, cooler. linwood, look at that, 78 degrees this afternoon with a chance of late-day showers. wilmington, delaware, dover and dewey beach all into the upper 70s to near 80 degrees this afternoon. dry right now. the radar shows the first batch of showers passing us to the north. it's the ones to the west that we're watching.

that's some light rainfall in pittsburgh and into ohio. it's part of a system that's going to be sweeping through today and into early saturday. there's still a chance of -- if you're up early on saturday, which i don't recommend, if you're up early on saturday, there's a chance you'll see showers in the airy. not everybody will see it. you will not see the 80s over the weekend, too. this will be the warmest day of the nexdç three. tomorrow, breezy and cooler as we dry out, 70 degrees and bright sunshine and much less windy on sunday. then we're right back into the 80 territory for monday afternoon. 81 in philadelphia. a chance of more showers and thunderstorms later on tuesday. we'll get sunshine, on wednesday, a bit cooler and another warmup with another possibility of showers and thunderstorms on thursday. and then the end of the week, coming weekend, looking nice and dry. look at those numbers. that's above average for this time of year. so the seven-day forecast is always at the bottom of the screen. the ten-day outlook at least once every half hour. tracy?
