nbc 10 news starts now. primary day is here. kaenlss have made their pitches and now pennsylvania and delaware voters are in the national political spotlight. prepared to vote, we'll help answer questions about voter fraud protection within new election rules and what you need to know before you head to the polls today. >> tracking showers. overnight rain is moving out of the area. another round of storms could move in this afternoon. good morning, this is "nbc 10 news today." i'm vai sikahema. >> i'm tracy davidson, live at the national constitutionç center. today is primary day in pennsylvania and delaware. own the next three hours we'll take a closer look at the role that voters in those two states will play in selecting the nominees, republican and

democratic for the president. we'll also look at local races and we'll explain this election interactive display here at the national constitution center. we'll walk you through that experience. first, let's get you updated on the forecast. nbc 10 first alert meteorologist bill henley has been tracking the storms. >> most of the wet weather has been missing us, just to the north of trenton, skirting mercer county at this hour. this first round of showers moves out. the temperatures move up. that could fuel storms later today. your seven-day forecast scrolling at the bottom of the screen. the lehigh valley, 55 degrees, 57 in delaware and a quick warmup to 06 degrees at 7:00. into the 70s by 10:00 this morning. same story in philadelphia. dry right now and it should be dry through the morning hours

with sunshine heating to near 70. that's by 9:00 in the morning. and a quick warmup today. even warmer than yesterday. 77 was the high yesterday. 83 for philadelphia today. a chance of some afternoon storms, most likely during the middle to late afternoon hours for the pennsylvania suburbs, new jersey and the lehigh valley. and then eventually into delaware, temperatures at the shore willing on the cool side. yardley, a few storms popping up by 10:00 this morning. i'll take a closer look at the timing of the potential of the storms when i come back in ten minutes. jessica boyington is watching your first alert traffic. >> we're watching the vine street expressway. we're starting off with good news, we're open to traffic today. everything moving along nicely. westbound towards the schuylkill or eastbound towards 95 you'll have no problems. we are just completely avoiding that closure this morning. the good news. the schuylkill and 95 are great heading into center city. no problems with the drive times there. no problems on theç blue route

southbound from the schuylkill to 95. only a 15-minute trip. there is an accident in plymouth. more updates when i'm back in the next ten minutes. now to decision 2016. today is primary day in pennsylvania and delaware. and in other states along the east coast. so let's answer some of the bigger questions. how big a role will voters in these states play? how much do these primaries matter? how special is the role we will play? let's take a look, pennsylvania and delaware are two of five states holding elections. voters in maryland, connecticut and rhode island will also head to the polls. who's on the ballot? voters in all five states will cast votes for the presidential nominee. there is also congress, the state attorney general and state legislature. delaware will choose governor, congress and other offices. where do primaries in delaware and pennsylvania matter?

by this time, we usually have a good idea who the nominee will be. but not this year. pennsylvania and delaware are key because there's no clear winner from either party. >> it's very unusual to get to the point where you have both parties with all these candidates still in the race and still coming to pennsylvania and our region to campaign. >> in pennsylvania, there are 210 delegates up for grabs for democrats, 71 delegates for republicans in our next half hour we'll explain how those delegates are awarded. right now, let's go to the polls. nbc 10's matt delucia is outside a polling place in bristol, bucks county. matt? >> first off, polls open at 7:00 a.m. in both pennsylvania and delaware. new jersey does not vote today. one of the big things to keep in mind is that this is a closed primary for both states.

what that means is you can only vote for the candidates in the party which you're registered. if you're registered, you canç only pick republicans if you're registered republican. there is a voter protection and rights hot line you can call today if you have questions. >> voting is our most fundamental right and it's the best way to show and be involved in our democracy. so voting is very important to just about everybody. and so anyone with any question at all can have those questions answered. >> and that hot line number is 866-our-vote. 866-our-vote. call it all day before you vote or if you have problems at the polls. it's nonpartisan. the folks are there to help you out. voting 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. in pennsylvania and delaware and coming up at 5:00, how do you know where to vote? especially if it's your first

time. i'll walk you through that process step by step. live in levittown, matt delucia, nbc 10 news. thanks for that. this summer's convention, especially for the republicans cowl be historic. ahead in the next few minutes, i'll explain what a contested convention really is and how the political drama could play out. vai? >> thanks, tracy. we'll be back, check in with you in a few minutes for a closer look at what tonight's results could mean for the candidates. hillary clinton will be in philadelphia with supporters as the primary results come in. but the other presidential candidates are already out of our area and looking ahead to the next contest. nbc 10's katy zachry is here now with the closer look at that. good morning, katy. >> good morning, vai. hillary clinton will spend tonight, primary night here in philadelphia. she'll be at the pennsylvania convention center with supporters as the votes in pennsylvania, delaware and three other state contests come in. she and bernie sanders took part in separate town hall meetings last night at the national constitution center. they aired on our sister network, msnbc.

then both candidates held get out the vote rallies. vanders spoke to a crowd at drexel university where he got some support from actress susan sarand sarandon. clinton was on stage at city hall.ç she had hundreds of supporters that you see in the background. >> i need every one of you to go out and work as hard as you can and convince everybody you can talk to to come out and vote. >> tomorrow let us see in pennsylvania the highest voter turnout in the history of the state. >> reporter: the latest nbc news poll has clinton ahead of sanders in pennsylvania by 15 points. now, speaking of voter turnout as you just heard from senator sanders. pollsters say expect to see a record republican voter turn jut tonight. front-runner donald trump rallied at west chester

university yesterday and in wilkes-barre last night. he had a message for his two party opponents. >> folks, they ought to both drop out of the race so we can unify the republican party. >> reporter: trump's comments come after ted cruz and john kasich announced late sunday they would strategize against him in all the remaining primaries to prevent trump from gaining enough delegates to win the gop nomination. kasich held a town hall in western pennsylvania last night. the ohio governor told the crowd he and ted cruz are trying to spend their resources where they can have the best success in beating trump. kasich was in our area yesterday morning. he stopped at the penrose diener south philadelphia. now, ted cruz has his sights on indiana where he hopes to beat donald trump. the texas senator traveled across the state appealing to kasich supporters to unite behind his campaign. and a top aide for ted cruz says the campaign has identified a, quote, short list of possible

vice presidential candidates. one of them being former business executive and unsuccessful presidential candidate carly fiorina. i'll be back in the next hour with more. katy zachry, nbc 10 news. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> it's a warm start but it has come with some clouds and some storms overnight. right now our areas are dry. south jersey, 62 degrees. the lehigh valley, 55 and look atç the 60s for philadelphia. the pennsylvania suburbs, that 58 degrees, there are a few cooler spots to be found but not a lot cooler. unionville is 56 while 54 degrees in asburyville and exton at 56 right now. st. david's, 59 degrees. and a mild morning at newtown, 58. bensalem is 58 to start with. this is our starting point. definitely warmer than yesterday. the seven-day forecast shows a warming trend that continues

today. the temperatures will be summer huff like. still string time but we'-- spr we'll feel the heat. it started yesterday. it's into the 80s this afternoon. that heat will likely fuel some election day storms today, later this afternoon and into this evening hour. most likely time to see those showers. first storms pushing out of here. it's this next line of showers and thunderstorms that could produce gusty winds this afternoon. even a chance that we'll see isolated spots of small hail. this morning, 62 degrees in philadelphia to start with. look at the warmup, though. middle 70s by 11:00. at 3:00 this afternoon, that's when we'll see the possibility of thunderstorms. pennsylvania suburbs will see that quick warmup, too, into the middle 70s. we'll get sunshine during the morning hours and clouds take over with late afternoon storms. same story for the lehigh valley. 7:00 in the morning, completely dry. by 11:00 heading into the early

afternoon hours, that's when there's a chance of some showers and thunderstorms. for delaware and south jersey, dry to begin with. big warmup to 76 degrees at 11:00. 80s this afternoon for delaware and new jersey, close to that 80 degree mark. as we go into the later afternoon hours, that's when we could see the storms develop. at the jersey shore, eventually the showers will move in there, too, after a dry morning and dry into the afternoon. those late-day storms are possible. that's what's happening today hour by hour. right now, the winds out of the west at 16 miles an hour, they'll become more southwesterly during the day. that will helpç to boost our temperatures. a warm one with the storms and it comes down for tomorrow, much cooler. temperature in the 60s for your pennsylvania. another chance of showers coming in thursday and friday. but it looks like the weekend is going to start dry. i'll take a look at the ten-day outlook when i'm back in ten minutes. vai? >> thank you, bill. 11 minutes past 4:00 a.m. on

this morning. saw some storms in parts of the area overnight. there's a possibility we'll see more storms later today. right now, live view of center city from the adventure aquarium. completely dry and mild. 62 degrees in philadelphia. that's where we'll be at 6:00 this morning. we'll see sunshine this morning and some clouds near 70 degrees by 9:00. seven day is scrolling at the bottom of the screen. it will be a warmer day than it was yesterday. it's followed by cooler weather on the way. 58 in trenton and mt. holly. allentown 55 and 56 in atlantic city. this is much warmer than yesterday. 21 degrees warmer for vineland and up by ten in wilmington this morning. you can feel it first thing. you won't need that jacket that you needed yesterday. the temperatures will take off this afternoon to summer-like levels. low 80s for south philadelphia with showers developing during the afternoon hours. dry in the pennsylvania suburbs for most of the morning. but the lehigh valley could see

late morning showers as temperatures top out in the low 70s for bethlehem. 78 degrees in easton today. sunshine to start with in delaware and south jersey. near 80 degrees for hamilton township, into the 80s for haddonfield. those showers, thunderstorms hold off until this afternoon. they will be scattered inç new jersey at the jersey shore. there's a possibility of storms as we go into the afternoon hours. look at linwood, 81 degrees, wildwood, warmer than yesterday, up to 78 and 83 for dover, low 80s in wilmington with the storms developing later in the day. in fact, we may see quick heating and those thunderstorm development -- or the thunderstorm development for later today could produce stronger storms in delaware and south jersey. right now that activity is to the north. you can see another line of showers and thunderstorms moving into the ohio valley and northwestern pennsylvania. there's more to keep track of during the day today. that first line of showers, clear at 8:00 this morning. we'll see scattered clouds but we could see those showers

arrive in the allentown area. that's at 10:00 this morning. scattered showers, that first wave goes through. during the late afternoon as things really heat up, here comes the potential for stronger storms. that's 2:00 in the afternoon. the lehigh valley into berks county and then into the pennsylvania suburbs offshore. that first round. then another potentially developing as the afternoon goes on and into the evening hours. keep an eye on the sky this afternoon, especially. this morning, sunshine breaks through the clouds. 83 this afternoon, turning cooler tomorrow, 66 and then more rain will keep us chillier for thursday and friday. we get a break just in time for the first part of the weekend. later on sunday, we may be dry for the blue cross run in the morning but in the afternoon, there's a chance of showers, 68 degrees and a chance of showers will stay with us for monday, tuesday, wednesday and into thursday. vai? >> thank you, bill. 4:21 this tuesday morning. you may be going to or from work
