says. these campaigns are over. on the democratic side and the republican side. there are not three examples where they're going to trip up the national dynamic. >> you like to crunch the numbers. do you agree, if you're a gop member of the house of the senate, you wake up and put the trump bumper sticker on your car? >> there are dead enders out there. saying, if we win this state, pick off this delegate. i mean, we're at the point where donald trump's lead, it's not the -- we're not talking so much about the states he might be surprisingly losing in from here on out, it's the cruz states he might win and sweep this thing. >> do your math thing, steve. i think the prospects of the contested convention, trump not being able to get to 1,237, was greatlyed last night. >> the state of pennsylvania, there were 54 unbound delegates, free agents.

this is the hope of the stop trump movement, getting them to flip against trump. at least 2/3 of the unbound delegates will be for trump. that's a huge bunch of delegates that changes the math significantly. >> you don't hear this often. talk about the democrats, nicolle. hillary clinton has 90% of the delegates she needs to get the nomination. bernie sanders says this is about politics, ideas, getting to the convention and getting my side across. is there anything that's personal? >> may be a blind spot but i can't believe why he launched attacks against her that have been telegraphed by donald trump. on sunday on "meet the press," he talked about all that divides them on big banks. donald trump on monday was echoing the sanders a i tttack. >> who is going to pull in the leash? >> he's not going to win. there's no path to the

nomination. this is not about self-esteem. >> who does he answer to? >> himself. you would presume someone has loyalty to the team you're playing for. the jersey he put on this cycle was for the democrats. trump is picking up the sanders attacks on clinton. >> steve, we're pivoting toward the general election. last night, trump said that hillary clinton is playing the gender card, the woman card, and in his view, she'd be at 5% in the polls but for the fact she was a woman. is that an argument that's going to play well in the general election? >> i have to say, i'm surprised i'm saying i'm surprised trump said something. i am surprised that last night, on a big night when the focus turns to the general election, that's the message he played. the biggest obstacle he faces in the general election is this huge, huge gender gap and the kinds of comments last night only seemed to reinforce it. >> mike murphy said, it was like trump was built in a lab to blow the general election. steve and nicolle, thank you.

severe weather still pounding the heartland, with more tornadoes, high winds and large hail. nbc national correspondent miguel almaguer is in oklahoma, south of tulsa. what is it like there? >> the fire chief isn't sure if a small twister touched down or it was just powerful winds that brought down the power poles and trees. nearly 100,000 people across the area are without power. this wasn't the only area that was hit hard. >> reporter: warning sirens in the tulsa area as severe thunderstorms swept through oklahoma. strong winds and rain knocking down trees, blocking roads and damaging homes. in sherman, texas, high winds and rain-soaked roads causing 18-wheelers to flip over. >> it hits ya. >> reporter: while in kansas, golf ball-sized hail pounded much of the state. in neighboring missouri, record rain. police blocking roads to keep

drivers away from flooded area. >> 60, 70 miles per hour winds. nothing new here. you hear a boom, the house is bowing and creaking. >> reporter: in the last 24 hours, more than 300 reports of severe weather. five reported tornadoes. 155 reports of wind gusts over 58 miles per hour. 263 reports of hail over one inch in diameter. back in oklahoma, the city took some of the worst blows. trees down, windows blown out. no injuries reported. much of the state remaining under a thunderstorm warning this morning, as the region braces for more to come. >> if there is any good news here, only a handful of small tornadoes touched down overnight. forecasters had called for potentially catastrophic damage over the last several hours. while there is some destruction here, it could have been so much worse.

back to you guys. >> miguel, thank you very much. turn to dylan, in for al. what are we going to see today? >> it's going to move to the midwest. yesterday, we had just the right ingredients that we were able to forecast some of the stronger storms. today, we don't have the ingredients in place. we'll see stronger storms but they're not going to be widespread. we don't have a huge risk of large tornadoes or very large hail. we have severe thunderstorm warnings through houston. you see the line of showers and heavier downpours moving to the south and east. they'll move to the gulf of mexico. a lot of cloud-to-ground lightning. could see hail and damaging wind gusts. we're not seeing widespread tornadoes though there is a warning near houston. the storms will occur this morning, we'll get a break and see spotty storms into this afternoon. it's the cold front moving eastward. there is the line that's moving through houston right now. then as we go to this afternoon, you see the spottier showers. they're not going to be as widespread. still, they could produce some

moderate sized hail and damaging wind gusts. the lightning is dangerous. >> see in a couple minutes. belgian prosecutors say a suspect in the paris terror attacks has been handed over the authorities. salah abdeslam told them he had arranged logistics for the paris attacks that killed 130 victims and had planned to blow himself up at a sports stadium, but backed out at the last minute. united states issuing a new warning to its citizens today about credible terrorist threats at tourist areas in turkey. the u.s. embassy is posting on its website the terror groups are seeking opportunities to attack popular tourist destinations throughout the country. turkey has been hit by six deadly suicide bombings since july that were either claimed by kurdish militants or blamed on the islamic state group. investors are keeping a close eye on wall street this morning after bad news tuesday

party. overnight, another round of powerful storms hit the nation's midsection, including at least five reports of tornadoes. one in north texas injured at least four people. also this morning, we've got new developments on the cargo ship el faro that sank seven months ago during a hurricane. the ntsb says it has found the ship's black box sitting on the ocean floor nearly three miles down. tom costello has been following this for us. good morning. >> you may call the ship was lost off the bahamas last october 1st. that's the debris and that's the ship, sitting on the ocean floor there. el faro left jacksonville for puerto rico, when it lost power and was sitting right in the path of a category three hurricane. >> reporter: three miles below the ocean's surface, el faro's black box, the voyage data recorder, the ntsb hopes will answer the question why it went down. investigators have only had the chilling phone call from the captain to go on. >> the clock is ticking.

can i please speak with a qi? >> reporter: the captain, davidson, said his ship was taking on water. 33 crew members on board. >> i have a marine emergency. we had a hull breach. we have water down in three hulls. we've lost the main propulsion unit. >> reporter: a short time later, silence. everyone on board, lost. the hope now, that the black box holds the recorded conversations from the ship's bridge during the emergency. el faro left jacksonville for puerto rico in the midst of a tropical storm. it was off the bahamas when it sank in 15,000 feet of water. underwater vehicles found the wreckage a month later. among those who died, an electrici electrician. >> he was a great guy. give the shirt off his back type of guy. >> reporter: his mother has followed every turn in the investigation. >> we've been praying for this, and i cannot tell you how happy

we are they found it. >> reporter: investigators are hoping the black box will tell them what happened and why in el faro's final hours. >> doesn't make any sense. we're just all looking forward to it being over. >> the next step is to bring the data recorder to the surface, then get it to the ntsb labs here in washington. many experienced navigators have questioned why the ship ever left jacksonville with a monster storm in the region. facing lawsuits, the company that owns el faro said it would never jeopardize a crew to rush a delivery. back to you. >> a lot of families asking that question, tom. thank you for the update. let's get a check of the weather from dylan, in for al. >> we are in the stormy season. while we did have a round of storms move through yesterday, we have our next big chance of seeing some strong storms on friday. here's this area of low pressure. as this moves east, it's going to create basically the same setup we saw yesterday. it digs into the central plains. we're looking for severe storms to develop, especially down near texas, up into oklahoma.

rels relations problem? >> i was at a point in my life where things needed to change. i thought of myself as a swimmer and nobody else. i don't know if it was like afraid of just letting go and showing who i am or what it was. i finally was just like, you know what, screw this. i'm not hiding behind anything anymore. i am who i am. if you don't like it, it's not my issue and not my problem. >> reporter: since completing 45 days in rehab, phelps says he's a changed man. ready to do what it takes to compete in his fifth olympic games. >> how is training going now? what's the difference? >> i want to be here. that's the difference. i had no desire to go to workout before. i want to retire how i want to retire. i have a great opportunity to do that. i mean, i haven't trained like this in decades. >> every time we do one of these interviews prior to an olympic games, i ask you to write the

>> how does it work? >> larger organizations from usa track and field to smaller ones like table tennis, 30 organizations have come together to give more information to kids. lots of kids are going to be inspired by the olympics. they're going to want to do sports that they may not know about. this is a place where they can get information for their parents, so they can try out the new sports. >> i think things got into a rut. baseball, basketball and soccer. but there are so many other sports. 10 years old, what were your interests? >> basketball was my first love, and i was fascinated by gymnastics. i found my sport later. it's great for kids to try everything and see what they're into. >> the idea is, they see a sport they like, use this gold map and they can find somewhere in their community where they can get involved in that sport? >> exactly. parents can check it out. they can try these new sports that they see the amazing team usa doing.

>> the thought bubble. this is a great story. you're going to love this one. what do you do when you sign up for a -- what you think is a 5k and end up going to wrong way and doing a whole half marathon? >> oh. >> this is what a 12-year-old girl actually ended up doing. she ended up running ten extra miles after mistakingly ran a half marathon instead of the 5k race she was planning to run on sunday in rochester, new york. she thought she was late. she got to the starting point, saw people were already running. what did she do? just joined in and said, i better get going. one problem is, she asked somebody the middle of the race, wait, what mile are we at? she's like, it's about the fourth mile. >> still going. >> she had two twochoices. turn around and go back or keep going. >> the fourth mile, i asked a woman that i was running with how long it was. she said it was about 13 miles. that's when i realized i think i

was in the wrong group. i was like, i'm going to finish this. i'm going to keep going. the police officer came on a motorbi motorcycle and said, your family is looking for you. they're leaving. i said, i know but i'm going to keep going. >> isn't she amazing? >> good for her. >> my hero. >> you have to train for a half marathon. 5k is 3.2 miles. >> she rocked it. after 15 minutes after the half marathon, she ended up -- or i guess the race was supposed to start at the same location. her parents were waiting at the 5k finish, waiting and waiting. what had happened to her? >> thought she was a slow runner or got mixed up. >> she gets a gold medal for that. >> the fact she finished it. i'd like to know her time. >> doesn't matter at that point. >> true. >> she finished. cool thing, this new movie, "snowden," coming out in september.

taking a look at the headlines. a u.s. expert on birth defects has children born from women infected with zika may suffer other complications in addition to microcephaly. the cdc doctor says even though there is still much to learn, there might be a broad range of outcomes associated with the zika virus infection during pregnancy. she mentioned possible problems with the eyes, ears or other neurological problems that could impact the spinal cord. only about 1/3 of the nation's high school seniors are prepared for the entry-level college math and reading courses. the national assessment of educational progress is out with its latest nations report card. it reveals 12th graders have slipped in math and reading scores have not changed. last year's average math score was a point lower than in 2013.

as for reading scores, they were flat compared to 2013. they were down five points from the early 1990s. new data suggests yoga may provide health benefits for patients with asthma. studies of more than 1,000 adults with mild to moderate asthma showed yoga led to small improvements in their symptoms and overall quality of life. researchers say it is not yet clear if yoga helps boost lung function or reduces the need for asthma medications. investors keeping an eye on wall street this morning after bad news for apple on tuesday. the company says quarterly revenue fell for the first time in 13 years. apple also posting its first ever drop in iphone sales as it faces an ever-saturated global market for smartphones. analysts expect sales to rebound when the company releases the iphone 7, presumably in the fall. welcome news if you struggle to remember passwords.

this morning on today food, we are eating our way to the olympics in rio with a taste of brazil from one of our favorite brazilians, camila alves. >> thank you for having me. >> we have to start with the samba. >> i am going and i'm excited. i'm excited to share this recipe, my favorite growing up. it's what my mom used to cook for me. if you're from brailzil, you're familiar with this ingredient here. >> what is that? >> comes in a can. it's okay. then we have some seasoning, giving a nice flavor and color. >> okay. every other ingredient, the onions, peppers and ftomatoes. >> very familiar. >> you've made this recipe more practical than when your mother made it. >> exactly. hold this for me? >> sure. >> i grew up eating this and never learned. i was like, i want my mom to always make it for me when i go home. then when i had it for the women

of "today", i had to make it in a practical way. heat it up before you get the chicken, nice brown. >> bone in, adding flavor. >> add this spicy salt, bay leaf. let it brown for a minute. mix it all up. >> okay. that's why you preheat it first, get it warmed up. >> exactly. if you have a slow cooker that won't brown your meat, what you want to do is brown in the pan. >> then put it in there, okay. >> this step will cut the prep time by half. instead of chopping -- >> remember that. >> put it in a blender. onions, garlic. >> lots of garlic. >> cilantro, red bell peppers and tomatoes. put the lid up there for me. >> puree in here. >> exactly. >> i turned it off. >> there we go. do it for a minute.

put water in there. two cups of water. blend it up. >> keep going? >> yes. >> put the lid on tight. good? >> perfect. what you want to do, pour this mixture in the slow cooker. grab the lid for me. actually, before the lid, put the two cups of water on top. >> smells good. delicious. >> cover it and cook it for four hours or so. until the chicken is tender. >> on high. >> exactly. this is what you end up with. you want to make sure you let this cool off before you shred. all you'll do, shred your chicken. >> with two forks? >> or use your hands. we on tv, so we have to keep it, you know, clean. if you're at home, do it with your hands. once shredded -- >> is this the juice in the pot? >> exactly. strain all the juices from the meat. you'll end up with a great broth. you're going to mix this up.
