it's dry right now as we look at center city and tomorrow it will be warmer with some more sunshine. perfect or your mother's day plans. and for more on what we can expect where you live, let's go to nbc 10 first alert neighborhood forecast. mother nature is smiling on moms tomorrow. >> the sun does in fact still exist. it's a bit of an extended hiatus this week. some of the areas to the north and west still a little on the cloudy side. temperatures in philadelphia right now 53 degrees. let's take a closer look at the neighborhoods, 53 in society hill, 54 in penns port. but a little further north the temperatures are coming down quickly. we're at about 50 degrees and 49 in redding. now again, clearing skies north and west at the moment but that won't be lasting long. we have showers to north and west that we'll be tracking

during the overnight hours. that will mostly be a nuisance. nothing like what we've seen today. as we head into mother's day, we're talking about more sunshine through the course of the afternoon. definitely improving conditions with more sunshine through the course of the afternoon. again showers in the forecast during the early morning hours, we're talking about 8:00 in the morning but that will changing through the day. it will be a little breezy with the temperatures in the lower 70s. we'll take a closer look at how long the warmer temperatures will last. well the stop in the rain today and the peeks of sunshine came just in town. nbc 10's drew smith checked in at several events. ♪ >> reporter: the band played for mt. airy day on this part of germantown avenue shlgs it's greet to see neighbors and friends and have a good time

outside and enjoy some food. >> reporter: but the ice cream wasn't popular because it got a little chilly. >> we have moose tracks, chocolate, vanilla. >> reporter: many people went for the hot stuff off of the grill or the funnel cakes. along the skug l rir, people didn't have to worry about puddles for the first time in a while. and in university city the kids were literally bouncing off of the walls. while some adults are starting to think about their summer gardens. >> it started out a little cold and dreary, the sun came through the clouds and we warmed up. >> soaking up the atmosphere. the music is great. >> reporter: we even found some real germans. >> we thought i was going to rain all day. >> reporter: the hammocks are back at the harbor park, open for the season today and as a welcome gift we saw the sun

finally break through the clouds. >> the sky opened up today. it was so nice to walk around. >> and that was drew smith reporting. we're following breaking news out of trenton at this hour. that's where the coast guard is searching for a missing jet skier. officials say he and a friend ran aground on their jet ski around 7:00 tonight near the trenton boat ramp in the delaware river. this is video from the scene. the crew from a nearby ship rescued one of the skewers but the coast guard launched a recuse boat crew and a helicopter crew. six people are dead dead, seven people injured and more people are out of their homes after a fiery night in our area. the three house fires in north town, west philadelphia and south philadelphia kept crews busy all night long. as randy gillen thal explain, investigatorings think that

smoke detectors could have saved some of the lives. in the span of 12 hours, firefighters in north town and philadelphia battled three separate braces leaving six people dead and officials say it's possible all could have been prevented. two adults and a child were killed, trapped when their home erupted in flames. and in south philly, firefighters say smoke detectors had no working batteries when two adults here were killed. the third deadly fire happened this morning in west philly. witnesses saw people jumping from the burning home. >> the guy hanging on the second floor landing, he jumped and we seen the whole first floor engulfed in flames. >> one man was killed when he tried to put the fire out himself but got caught up in the heavy smoke. >> he was trying to put it out and get people out of the building.

>> a difficult 12 hours for local firefighters and now a much needed message from philadelphia's fire commissioner. >> fire is everyone's fight. we need everyone to have a working smoke alarm, have a home escape plan. make sure to get out safely. if there's a fire, get out first, dial 911. if you try to fight the fire, you may not be successful. >> and the fire commissioner reminding people in philadelphia, if you need a smoke detecter, just call 311 and firefighter wills come install one in your home. in west philly, randy gyllenhaal, nbc 10 news. it's good to be home. that's what vice president joe biden told the crowd at gare state university's commencement today. he served as the school's keynote speaker. >> i urge you to resist the temptation to rationalize what others view as the right choices for you, instead of what you feel in your gut is the right

a university of pennsylvania professor removed from a flight after a math equation he was working on was mistaken for terrorist activity. a passenger became suspicious of what the pr fes sore was writing in his notebook. and american airlines flight was delayed for two hours until the professor was cleared. nbc 10's andraya cline thomas got reaction. >> reporter: travelers are sounding off after an american iernls flight from philadelphia airport to syracuse was ready to

take off thursday evening when it went back to the gate. it was actual he a passenger's suspicions about her a university professor she allegedly thought posed a threat. the professor is an internationally recognized economist. he was on his way to a speaking engagement in ontario canada and working on math equations. the woman quote thought he was a terrorist because she was writing strange things on a pad of paper. >> obviously people have a very great fear which overwhelms their ability to think. >> fear with him removed from the plane, questioned and eventually cleared by authorities. delaying the flight for two hours. >> i think she should have asked him what he was doing first. >> the statement american airline confirmed that a passenger expressed concerns about another customer's behavior and apologized for the

delay. >> pretty unfortunate but i think they have to stick to the rules with what is going on around the world. >> nbc 10 news. former foes turn bike riding partners. today the bicycle coalition of greater philadelphia teamed up with the philadelphia daily news for the first bike ride. the coalition have fought for years over bike in the city. but the two sides came to a truce resulting in the 11-mile ride for charity today. and tomorrow could be the perfect day for a bike ride with mom. our metrologist is mapping out moth's day for us with if first alert neighborhood forecast. >> it's been cloudy, cool, a damp week. we're df natalie looking at improvements tomorrow. current temperatures in the low 50s. right around wilmington, philadelphia we're at 50 degrees for those of you in trenton. we're definitely looking at an

improvement over the last 24 hours. temperatures have been on the upswing. a little warmer today but it looks like the trend will actually continue as we head into tomorrow. here's a life look outside toward the center city skyline. conditions looking quiet but we're tracking wet weather just off to the west. the good news is it's not looking like anything substantial, just some showers during the overnight hours. we've got showers moving through western pennsylvania, parts of west virginia and across western new york state. this is a weak front. anything that moves through is likely to be a nuisance. clouds will be on the increase. 6:00 a.m., the showers just moving into the western suburbs, into the lee high valley. very potty as pell. that continues east ward and

diminish diminishes. maybe sneak sbag philadelphia. i wouldn't be surprise if we kept things dry toward delaware and south jersey. spotty showers along the i-95. you can see that clears out pretty quickly through the course of the afternoon. maybe we'll see a shower or two through the evening. nothing substantial and much of the day is actually looking sunny. it could get a little on the breezy side as the front starts to move through. sunshine on sunday. a big improvement compared to what we've seen really over the course of the last several days. slightly warmer temperatures this afternoon and it looks like the trend will once again continue through tomorrow. after spending much of this week in the 50s with plenty of clouds and rain, as we head into this afternoon, 63 for the high, 74 for sunday and lower 70s to get the workweek underway. it looks like the seasonal temperatures are actually here to stay. very nice to wrap up the weekend and kick off the workweek as well.

we keep things in the 70s, tuesday, wednesday and thursday. you can see the shower chances do start to return toward the later and middle part of the week. the good news is, no particular day, at least not at the moment looking so soggy that it's going to be raining from beginning to end. perhaps not as bad as what we saw for this week. but the weather pattern is more active in the later portion of the week. hey, since winning half a dozen street, the phillies have come back to earth, losing the series opener against the mar n marli marlins. top of the 8th, 3-2 ball game, a base knock, tied at three. mike hill, front ko, grounded to third, an easy twin killing, 6-4. chris johnson dropped it.

the winning run scores, phillies steal one in miami 4-3. to football now, sam brad fod's desire to have traded has not gone over well. the latest detractor on sirius radio. >> the impression i get this is this guy doesn't want to compete. he's not interested in playing faub and not interested in competing at the quarterback position. he wants it hasn'ted to him on a silver platter. that's not the way life is. the eagles owed him no explanation. and if you think you're that good, you should be able to beat out a rookie who has no earthly idea what the nfl looks like. the first leg of the triple crown, last year we're introduced to american pharoah who won the derby.
