deadly derailment one year later. eight people died, 200 more were hurt, and concerns about railroad safety remain because of the crash of amtrak train 188. violent crash. new from overnight, police are investigating this crash along ridge avenue that hurt two people and damaged several cars. and doctors charged. the physicians were supposed to be helping patients, but prosecutors say they were behind an elaborate prescription drug ring. it's 4:00 a.m. good morning. this is "nbc 10 news today." i'm tracy davidson. let's get to bill henley and the first alert weather forecast. >> good morning, tracy.

we're seeing some scattered showers this morning. in new jersey, this is a live look from wildwood. these showers have just moved offshore. first alert radar showing them just to the southeast of cape may. that should be it for showers during the day. still some clouds around, but you can see it's dry in allentown, trenton, and wilmington. but there are a few areas of light fog in some of the western suburbs. 2 1/2-mile visibility in p pottstown. the temperatures, 50s for much of the area. a little cooler in the pennsylvania suburbs. 49 degrees right now. here's the 40s. north wales at 49 degrees while it's 50 in new hope and ft. washington. heading for the 70s today. we'll go through the forecast hour by hour in ten minutes. jessica boyington, meantime, watching your first alert

traffic. >> that's right and we already have a closer in horsham. some small delays there. they're detouring traffic right around this scene. we're also dealing with some ongoing construction. some of it is out on the vine street expressway. this is vine street around 24th street. our camera is in that direction. right here westbound, almost approaching the schuylkill expressway, we have some construction vehicles on site there. with the east and westbound lanes closed in between 95 and the schuylkill this morning. in between the schuylkill and broad street this morning with limited access to 95 and the schuylkill expressway. i'll have updates for you on this. should be clear around the 5:00 hour, but we'll have updates in the next ten. >> jessica, thanks. one year ago today tragedy and death along train tracks in philadelphia. eight people died when a speeding amtrak train derailed and crashed in ft. richmond. more than 200 bruised and blo y

bloodied passengers were rushed to area hospitals. the crash started a national discussion about railroad safety. nbc 10's matt delucia is live where train 188 made its last stop before flying off the rails. >> reporter: that's right. one year ago today, amtrak train 188 left this station and crashed a few moments later. take a look at these pictures. hard to forget these images. this is what it looked like that night. train cars off the rail, some on their side and torn apart. the injured were taken to ten different hospitals in our area. the most, however, went to temple. the hospital tells me it treated 54 victims. i spoke with some of the doctors who treated many of them. they still remember that night. >> when i walked in and saw the number of patients that we had already on site and the numbers that we were getting, it was rather impressive. >> reporter: they set into

motion what the hospital had long practiced for, a mass casualty incident. since then, the chief medical officer tells me they've made improvements to their protocols. >> we learned how to better organizes ourselves in the event of an emergency. almost immediately after that first night, we started assessing how our response was and how we might respond differently to future events. >> reporter: and the doctors tell me they still stay in touch with some of their patients. as for the investigation into the crash itself, we have already seen some reports from the ntsb and federal investigators will meet next week to discuss and lay out the probable cause of the derailment. coming up at 4:30, we spoke with some of the attorneys of the victims and what answers they want. for now, i'm live outside the 30th street station. >> and be sure to have the free nbc 10 app and watch nbc 10 news this afternoon starting at 4:00. we'll have full coverage.

five minutes past 5:00 right now. 57 degrees outside. new from overnight, two people are in the hospital following this crash in philadelphia's east falls neighborhood. it appears the car they were riding in hit several parked vehicles then flipped over at ridge and midville around 1:00 this morning. both people are in stable condition. a chester county mother shot and killed after an argument recorded the crime on her phone. detectives have charged keith smith with the murder of his girlfriend. investigators say webb used her phone to record audio, and that recording includes the shotgun blast that killed her. smith then shooting himself in the face. three children came down stairs to call 911. now that audio evidence could help convict webb's accused killer. >> it really is her voice coming from the grave and reaching out to make sure justice is done to the man who murdered her. >> the d.a. says a recent change

to the state wiretap act means webb's recording can be used in court. meantime, smith is in the hospital for facial reconstruction, but he's expected to recover and transfer to chester county prison. prosecutors have charged three doctors from our area with illegally selling prescription drugs and endangering the patients they were supposed to be helping. dr. alan summers sold prescription for cash out of an office on south broad street near wolf in south philadelphia. that office is now shut down. a 47-page indictment says he enlisted the help of two other doctors to make $5 million off customers. people living near the office say they saw a line of people stretching around the building at all hours of the day. >> the line would be from that door all the way around the corner. >> lines. they had security guards out here and everything. yeah, they had security guards, armed security guards too. >> the doctors who were charged in this indictment are alleged to have become simply drug

dealers. >> prosecutors say the doctors sold prescriptions for a drug used to treat opiate addiction and an anti-anxiety medication. the attorney for dr. summers says his client is innocent, and the medical treatment he provided was medically necessary and met the generally accepted standards of medical practice. the man accused in a road rage shooting on the blue route is behind bars, and the arrest is the result of a tipster recognizing the suspect from a police sketch. troopers tracked down richardson to his home in overbrook yesterday. he's now charged with attempted murder. richardson is accused of shooting into another driver's car on west 76 in conshohocken. the bullet didn't hit anyone. an employee at a vocational school has resigned aven ed aft student ended up with his gun. police say the legally registered gun was in the employee's car. he then had students work on the

vehicle as part of a learning program, but after that the gun was missing. police recovered the weapon about six hours later. administrators suspended the student. it's 4:08. 57 degrees outside. happening today, we're expected to learn more about a festival coming to philadelphia with a political twist. this morning organizers are expected to announce the details for political fest. organizers say it is a festival that celebrates political history, government, and the road to the white house. the event is in honor of the democratic national convention in philadelphia this summer. from our delaware bureau now, gates open this afternoon at dover international speedway for the start of nascar weekend. practice rounds begin today for the nascar camping world truck series followed by more nascar practice and qualifying rounds tomorrow and saturday. then the main event, the nascar sprint cup series race, sunday afternoon at the monster mile.

57 degrees, eight minutes after 4:00. we have some clouds lingering in the area. it's dry now in philadelphia. in fact, the rain has ended across the board. the temperatures, they're still coming down at this point, but with some clouds around, it's not going to get much cooler in philadelphia. 6:00, it's 57 degrees. then the sunshine breaks through finally. we'll see some of that today. 66 degrees at 9:00 and climbing. we'll be well into the 70s this afternoon. satellite and radar shows it is dry this morning. those showers to the southeast and some to the southwest, but we should stay dry today. no more than a sprinkle is possible. mainly we'll just see sunshine breaking through the clouds. the clouds won't clear out completely, but we'll get enough sunshine today to warm up nicely. this is 7:00 this morning. those clouds keep moving, but 9:00, there will be a few clouds around. look how they thin out by 11:00 this morning. as we head into the noontime hour, it'll be nice and dry. look at these temperatures taking off today. 77 degrees in university city,

it's 4:14, 57 degrees outside this thursday morning. new this morning, a unique way to spread awareness about organ donation. donate life p.a. is behind a campaign using those old and possibly ugly prom pictures and putting them to good use. they want to show how easy it is to become an organ donor and how many lives you can save. nbc 10's katy zachry is live in center city to explain. >> reporter: it may sound like a leap. those hideous prom pictures we've all taken to saving lives.

but this organization says it's all about getting the ugly truth out there. i sat down with january wi wine. she says one person every 18 hours in pennsylvania dies awaiting a life-saving organ transplant. because of that, they've launched the ugly truth campaign on social media. they're asking people to post the most unflattering pictures of themselves with the hash trash ugly truth to spread awareness about these staggering numbers. >> their absolute ugliest. this is about the ugly truth. we want everyone to post the hashtag ugly truth. the worst picture they can find. >> reporter: so tracy, you and i answered the call so diligently. look at that shot there. well, we just had a quick shot of tracy. we did fortunately collect some prom pictures, tracy's included, mine as well. tracy, over the next little bit,

i'm going to spread this awarene awareness, post it to social media with the hashtag ugly truth. i know you will do the same to spread this kind of awareness. and then coming up in the next hour, we're going to talk about some of the myths associated with people who don't sign up to be organ donors and the people here at this organization behind me, they dispel those myths. that'll be coming up at 5:15. katy zachry, nbc 10 news. >> i will post on twitter this morning. katy, thanks. important message. new information this morning. two more recently discovered pieces of debris appear to be from the missing malaysian airlines flight 370. mh-370 vanished in march of 2014 with 239 people on board. investigators believe it went down in a remote stretch of the southern indian ocean. the two new pieces of debris are an engine part and a cabin panel piece. they were found in south africa and on a remote island in the indian ocean. an international team of experts

confirm both pieces are almost certainly from mh-370. that brings the total number of debris pieces to five. this morning there are reports that the new hampshire attorney general will launch an investigation after a video shows officers punching a man while he was on the ground. helicopter video shows the point where a high-speed chase from massachusetts ended in nashua, new hampshire. the driver opened his door with his hands up, got on his knees, got on the grounds, then the video shows the officers approach the man and punch him. state police say they'll likely conduct an internal investigation. in colorado, a judge ruled are the man who acknowledged killing three people at a planned parenthood clinic is not competent to stand trial. the ruling puts the case against robert dear on hold. he'll be sent to be a state psychiatric hospital, and his mental health will be re-evaluated in august. dear is charged with 179 counts, including murder and attempted murder, stemming from the

november clin you cic shooting also hurt nine people. back home here in the lehigh valley, we're learning a about scare for people in bethlehem after a black bear caused concern by roaming the neighborhoods. this is the 150-pound cub that caused the commotion. last week police received multiple 911 calls about the bear. a wildlife conservation officer tranquilized the cub and released it into the wild. >> a bunch of people saw it, but when they say bear, i shut my door. >> i equate them a lot of times to teenagers. they're young with not a lot of life experience. they get into some trouble. >> wildlife officers say it's more common to see cubs straying from their mothers during the spring, and they're often attracted to trash and food. clouds are still with us this morning, actually helping us stay a bit warmer this morning. most of the area is in the 50s. though it's cool, it's really not cold this morning. those lingering clouds, they'll finally break. we'll get some sunshine today.

partly cloudy skies. you'll see breaks of sunshine for trenton, haddonfield. a bit cooler to the south. the temperatures will be in the 60s in atlantic city. 70s for galloway township. up to 72. a bit cooler than areas to the north for delaware. wilmington with breaks of sunshine, 74 degrees. 69 degrees in dover. just a little cooler at rehoboth beach. that's today. but tomorrow we've got clouds returning and a chance of more showers. during the day today, noontime, you can see partly cloudy skies. the clouds will linger into the afternoon, but we'll still see sunshine into the late afternoon hours. this evening turning partly cloudy. overnight tonight, that's when our next chance of showers is. that's early tomorrow morning at 2:30 in the morning. the threat of showers will return tomorrow afternoon. that's right around lunchtime into philadelphia. look at the showers to the west into central pennsylvania. here's our chance of not only showers but thunderstorms tomorrow. and there's a possibility of

and sheena parveen. sign up at phillies.com. >> looking forward to that, bill. 4:22 right now. let's get you to work and check the pennsylvania turnpike. first alert traffic reporter jessica boyington is doing that. >> well, tracy, we are watching a little bit of construction. construction headed eastbound between valley forge and norristown. the left and center lanes closed there. our drive times are still doing okay for the most part. eastbound drive time from valley forge to route 1, still a 23-minute trip. average speeds are into the 60s. not really affecting traffic for the morning time. just something to watch out for. out in horsham, we're still watching that accident. route 611 is closed between blair mill road and horsham road. the vine street expressway still closed this morning. should be clearing around the 5:00 hour. you can actually see a car came on one of the on ramps right there. they may actually be starting a little bit early. sometimes they run a little ahead of schedule.
