that's easton, which saw a little sunshine to start with, but showers moving in. right now, 65 degrees and dry. the best chance of storms coming in during the afternoon and into the early evening hours. that's going to limit our temperature warmup during the day today. 70 degrees this afternoon for the shore. just a little bit cooler and eventually showers will reach the shore points, 66 degrees this afternoon. on the radar screen, looking pretty quiet in philadelphia, but you don't have to look far to see the first raindrops moving through montgomery, into bucks county and lehigh valley, getting loit rain showers. no thunder and lightning with those showers, but this line to the west moving through harrisburg is what we're watching closer as we go to the afternoon. that's going to bring us the possibility of some thunderstorms and we could see heavy downpours as well. this is what it looks hour by hour. 2:00, first chance of storms. by 6:00 this evening, drying out. turns out to be a nice evening as the skies are clearing. storms in the suburbs will keep

devices. >> a family of three terrorized by three masked men with a gun. this happened overnight in their northeast philadelphia home. pamela osborne joins us live from the neighborhood where this happened. the family believes they're wrongly targeted? >> that's right. add one point, the suspects police are looking for even asked themselves if they have the right house because once they got inside, they didn't seem to find what they were looking for. >> tons of police officers on this block, so it's really shocking. >> neighbors who live in the 1400 block of faraday tell us this was the last place they expected to feel unsafe. >> this is a very quiet, safe block. i have four kids. they're always outside. i never have to worry. now something like this happens and it makes you wonder, like, what exactly is going on. >> police tell us a husband and wife in their 60s and their adult son were asleep inside of

their northeast philly home when three men in masks and gloves broke in through a back sliding door. the intruders zip tied the victims and demanded to know where the money was. one of the suspects showed a gun. the family told nbc10 off camera that they believe they were wrongly targeted and that they didn't have the money the men were looking for. after ransacking the entire house, the suspects left with $40 cash. >> who are they looking for and why, is really the question. >> that family telling us they have lived here for 40 years. that because there are so many police officers who live in this area, like that neighbor told us, that they never imagined it would happen here or to them. we have also learned that there is a church about a half a block away from where this home is, police are in the process of checking the surveillance cameras there to see if they picked up any images of these suspects as they came here or left overnight this morning. reporting live in northeast philly, pamela osborne, nbc10

news. >> pam, thank you. philadelphia police are looking into the death of a man who was hit by a car in roosevelt boulevard. accident investigators are telling us this happened while the victim was crossing the boulevard at c street around 11:30 last night. medics rushed him to einstein hospital where he died. police say this was not a hit and run and at this point, there are no charges or arrests. sky force 10 flew over a warehouse fire in philadelphia. the fire broke out on fraley street around 9:00 this morning. no one there was hurt. right now, a fire continues to rip through a state forest near the garden state parkway in burlington county. sky force 10 took this video of the fire that just is raging in the pine barrens last night. so far, the fire is not affecting traffic on the parkway, and no buildings are affected. here's a closer look at where the fire is burning. it's in the bass river state forest. that's close to burlington

county's border with ocean county. and here's another look at the flames from sky force 10. more than a dozen fire engines have been battling these flames. officials say the fire is about 60% contained. just tap the nbc10 app for updates. and this just in to nbc10, a judge has delayed the release of a list of unindicted coconspirators in the bridgegate scandal until next tuesday. her order came as the clock ticked down to the noon hour when prosecutors were supposed to release the names of public employees and officials in the plot to close lanes of the george washington bridge back in 2013. she moved the deadline that she considered a motion filed late last night by someone on the list who wants to keep it private. former aides to chris christie face charges of plotting to close the bridge for political payback. christie said he does not expect to be on that list. also today, we'll get our first look at the winners of

saturday's $429 million powerball jackpot. eight people will share the winnings from the ticket bought at this store, a 7-eleven in trenton. the person who purchased the ticket spent $6 for two tickets. the drawings were wednesday and saturday, and they chose the lump sum payment, so the $6 investment will yield $284 million. that's before taxes. lottery officials will introduce the winners at 3:00 this afternoon in lawrenceville. you can see that live on the nbc10 app. >> a philadelphia tradition is under way now. the schuylkill river, give you a live look at the water as rowers from around the country are competing in the annual dad veil regatta. it's the largest collegiate rowing regatta in the country. this year's competitors come from as far away as california and canada and have traveled to

philadelphia for the event. there's even an official here from england. the mayor helped to kick off the competition. >> this event is a signature event for us. it brings in wonderful people from around the country, around the world, and we're going to keep it here. and we're proud of it. >> mayor kinney also said he has set up a meeting with the army corps of engineers to discuss the need for dredging to fix a problem on the river bottom that has made it difficult to launch boats for some of the docks. all right, time now to get a check on the roads with first alert traffic reporter jessica boyington. what are you seeing, and first of all, the dad veil regatta created some problems? >> some delays on the schuylkill expressway because some of that is diverted. you can see montgomery, an eastbound delay. an average speed still into the 40s. we're a little late for that. normally we don't see delays at this time. that's also, like i said, because of the dad vail regatta

closure. that will be closed until tomorrow, so saturday around 6:00 p.m. right now, you can take the schuylkill expressway as an alternate. there's also construction on city avenue headed northbound between lancaster avenue and north 63rd street. backed up right now to 66th because the road is reduced to one lane. there's an accident in west pottsgrove on west high street, and the area bridge is doing okay for the most part, but a scheduled opening under way on the burlington bridge scheduled for 11:00 a.m. vai. >> all right, thank you. today in montgomery county, septa's general manager will speak to a civic group about a planned rail extension. they want to extend the high speed line. the route would bring trains to and from the king of prussia mall, the valley forge casino, hotels, and business centers. septa is getting feedback from

right now, a manhunt is under way for a gunman who shot and wounded two police officers in new hampshire. one officer was shot in manchester, that happened around 2:30 this morning. the other shot a few blocks away just after that. both officers were rushed to hospitals and expected to be okay. meanwhile, police cars swarm the streets where the shootings happ happened. officers have been searching for the gunman all morning. >> we're searching the area for a white malmale with long hear and a trench coat. we're asking residents to shelter in place while we look. >> because of the search, schools in the area are closed today.

today, obama administration will issue new bathroom guidelines for public schools when it comes to transgender students. the justice and education departments will direct school districts to treat students in a way that matches their gender identity. that goes for access to bathrooms and locker rooms. the guidelines are not legally binding. but school districts that discriminate could risk losing federal funding. the justice department is in a legal battle with north carolina over the state's new bathroom law for transgender people. >> now to decision 2016. this morning, the republican party is one step closer to unification following yesterday's meeting between presumptive republican nominee donald trump and house speaker paul ryan. the democratic race meanwhile seems far from over. nbc new's national correspondent edward lawrence has an update on the race for the white house. >> donald trump was all smiles as he tried to mend fences and

rain showers in the allentown area, and also berks county right now. we have seen scattered showers at new jersey and the shore. but most of the heavier stuff is well to the west. this is it line we have been watching since 4:00 this morning. that's when those showers were in extreme northwestern pennsylvania. still a few sprinkles in that area, but this line is sweeping into the area this afternoon. our area this afternoon. with it will come a chance of some heavy downpours. the first batch of heavier rain has moved to the north. but you can see some moderate showers now moving into western lancaster county at this hour. the winds won't be all that strong until we get thunderstorm development this afternoon. and then we could see some gusty winds, as a southerly wind at 5 miles per hour is part of why we're warming up. but the wind at the shore is keeping things a bit cooler there. it's coming off that chillier ocean. so now 65 degrees in philadelphia. 60s in the lehigh valley and the pennsylvania suburbs where it started off in the 50s this

morning. mild for delaware. south jersey and at the shore, you'll see the temperatures right along the coast for atlantic city are a little cooler thanks to that southerly wind. you go inland and you'll see 60s. the shower activity moving through. futurecast showing at 2:00 this afternoon, those storms are on the move. they keep on going, and by this evening, at 7:30, we may still see a scattered showers and then we get a nice break, and pretty nice evening. look at that, another round of showers for later on saturday. before these move in, we'll get some sunshine, but late saturday afternoon, 4:30, look at that line of showers and a potential for some strong thunderstorms. strong gusts are possible as well as heavy downpours, as those move through the area. that's saturday afternoon, and by saturday evening, skies are clearing once again, but behind that second line of showers will come a big cooldown for sunday. so today, into the lower 70s for

the suburbs. it will be a little bit cooler. 68 degrees. late day sunshine after the showers move through. same story in the lehigh valley. showers and a chance of thunderstorms then breaks in the clouds late in the afternoon. the clouds will hang in for new jersey and at the shore. 60s with showers uz riving. we have seen a few sprinkles, but heavier downpours with thunderstorms possible late this afternoon and into the early evening hours at the shore. and delaware, you can turn off the sprinklers in wilmington. 70 degrees this afternoon. a chance of storms for dover and lewis as well. today will not be the only opportunity to water the lawn. tomorrow we'll get more storms after some sunshine in the morning. and into the early afternoon hours. those storms will come through a little later tomorrow afternoon compared to today. then we're clearing out and cooling down for sunday. 59 degrees the high temperature, and wind will be blowing to keep things cooler. monday, bright sunshine. a little warmer. that's the beginning of a warming trend.

we're tracking showers and thunderstorms for much of the area today. parts of our area already saw showers moving in this afternoon like here in cape may new jersey as we take a look at our camera from the marquis de lafayette hotel. bill henley is here with our forecast. hey, bill. >> hey, vai. plenty of clouds, yes, the showers, you're absolutely right. the ones we have been tracking so far have been light and pretty scattered. you can see atlantic city seeing a few raindrops into cape may and the lehigh valley getting light rainfall. two rounds of thunderstorms are heading our way, and the first will arrive this afternoon. the second is going to be here on saturday. this is the chances for rain for our area. before we get a dry day, that will be sunday, we have to get through today and tomorrow. for philadelphia, for dover, atlantic city, and in allentown.

at the site of the train wreck in port richmond. eight people died that evening including laura finamore, her father said the vigil helped ease the pain of losing her. he also spoke about the federal report on the crash that's due out next week. >> hope it's a thorough examination of all of the issues, not the issue of the conductor. >> he was referring to the man who operated train 188 who has not yet been charged. the vigil also honored first responders, red cross volunteers and neighbors who rushed to help some 200 people who were hurt in the crash that night. well, former temple university president peter leachorus has died. he passed away last night following a long illness. he had a stroke about two years ago. he was temple's president from 1982 to 2000, and that was when the center, the university's main arena, was renamed in his honor. before that, he was dean of the

temple law school. he was 85 years old. tsa is again warning long lines at airport security checkpoints may only get worse as we head into the busy summer travel season. tom costello reports the administration is trying to staff up fast, but too many screening officers are quitting, often before they finish their first year on the job. >> with summer fast approaching, congress is turning up the heat on the tsa. record numbers of passengers now mean those long lines could get even worse. >> i think we have to agree, that's not acceptable. >> tsa chief got an earful of bipartisan frustration from lawmakers on thursday. >> you cannot recruit, you cannot train, you cannot retain. and you cannot administrate. >> the problem, says admiral peter neffinger. >> more people going through the system than ever before. >> whatever your summer travel plans, be prepared for this.

>> if everyone would look at your boarding passes. >> checkpoint choke points. >> i would have liked to have a cup of coffee, but i'm going to stand in this line. >> a record 2.2 million passengers are traveling every day. volume up 7% nationwide, but up 14% in seattle, up 15% in atlanta. meanwhile, the tsa doesn't have enough screeners. 117 walk off the job each week, more than 6,000 officers a year. as they struggle with demanding passengers, stress, the monotony of the job and relatively low pay. in phoenix, another problem, tsa processing delays led to a massive baggage backup. luggage backed up outside. passengers made their flights but without their bags. the problem is so bad, the airline is trying to pressure the tsa are encouraging passengers to tweet out their most frustrating moments with the #ihatethewait. in atlanta, lots of screening lines closed. and this simple tweet from a

television cameras have never been there. so for your geography, it's 1,000 miles, almost due south of hawaii. and about 400 miles north of the equator. so it's out there, it's out there. if you google it, the little thing will pop up and you hit minus, minus, it really is out there in the middle of nowhere. it is an amazing place. it was used for troops in world war ii, almost completely flattened and nature has been given the opportunity to sort of take its course, and with a little bit of help, this place is really healing itself. so it stands as an example of what can happen when we take some of the stress, the environmental stress, the human stresses off a, and it's just beautiful reefs, phenomenal fish, awesome birds. you could go there and say this is about practically close to paradise. >> it very much looks like my

ancestral homeland as i remember it. i understand you and your crew had to seal and freeze your clothes before you even stepped foot on the island. tell us what that was about. >> yeah well, so part of the deal there is that they're trying to get rid of the invasive species and to insure that no one brings any new invasive species in, they called up, they said we want you to buy new clothes, bring them home, put them in sealed bags, pult them in a freezer for at least 48 hours before you come here. because we don't want you to track anything in from the outside world with you. we were very dutiful about that. i can say for the first time in my life, i have actually frozen my underwear. so there you have it. >> that's tmi right there. one last question. tell us why scientists are so interested in studying this place. >> well, especially with coral reefs, we have been reporting all winter about the bleached coral reefs especially in the great barrier reef and how climate change is affecting this.

and as you well know, as the oceans go, so go our planet, right? so much of our oxygen, so much of our food supply comes out of the ocean. and it's the reefs that are really the engine for all of that. here's this place where even when there is climate change, it's so protected, so pristine, they can resiliently bounce back. so this is kind of a petri dish, a possibility we say in the story, of what can be. and it's kind of sitting as an example of, okay, so this is what it's like when it's good. maybe all should settle down with all your nastiness, all the nastiness that you're doing to the planet. give it a chance to catch its breath a little bit. >> a lot of vested interest, but i think we all have a vested interest in seeing what the coral there, what it speaks to our future. to see more of the water interview and his visit to pal my r

i will not go gently. jen, let's start with you. tell me about the show and did you draw from your own personal experience in the production? >> yes. yes, i turned this year, which i know is not old. >> just a baby. >> just a baby, i know. many people have told me that, but it was the first time i kind of came face-to-face with middle age and finding myself right there and going, oh, what does this mean? i remember i was watching a program, and singers that i used to love anden to when i was in the '80s were on, and i was shocked when they came out and they were middle aged women. i thought, oh, my gosh. if they're middle aged, i must be, too. that was the genesis of that but grappling with what it means to glow older, at many different ages. there are characters of many ages, but most are right smack in the middle age area. >> and for me as a man, when i became -- when the president of the united states became my same age group, that was like

frightening. >> absolutely. >> some you expect, like your teachers, you expect them to be older to you. when the president is the same age -- harriet, tell me about the response of audiences when they see the show. >> it has been a thrill beyond words. they laugh, they cry, they applaud in the middle. they stand up. standing ovations. many nights. it's -- i think had show speaks very powerfully, no matter what age you are. really good comedy, about very grim things. and grim fact that some day we will not be here. tons of laughter and fun. and so there's all this hilarity, and then i have been flooded with e-mails from friends and colleagues who say we're still talking about the issues raised. so i think there's this wonderful double thing, tons of laughter and joy, and then, wow, there's a lot to think about. >> in terms of the demographics

thousand hours now getting ready for this regatta. >> getting ready for the dad vail. >> the biggest regatta these kids will ever be in in terms of the amount of competitors and importance us. >> temple coach brian burkens started getting his team ready for this race back in september. >> it takes a long time to prepare for this five minutes of racing. >> heart rate of 200 plus. they're sweating, bleeding from their eyes. >> very stressful for me personally. >> that's just from the banks of the river. rhonda's son is a senior. and even the family dog can't miss this. >> at this point in the race, you see them come by. you don't see them for a while. so the end is so far down there. >> 125 colleges and universities are here for the gold. >> we just finished exams on tuesday. we have kind of gotten over the hump and this is the one on the calendar. >> even if friday the 13th brings bad weather along the way. >> just pretend like it's not

happening, not affecting you. do what you have to do. >> go through anything. >> exactly. >> not everything, though. if there's lightning nearby, the races will be halted. never in the history of the regatta has weather canceled the entire event. i'm matt delucia, nbc10 news. >> we do have dreary conditions and wet weather on the way, but i don't think they're going to have to cancel the dad vail. they'll get it in. so far, just dreary conditions. we have seen spotty showers in cape may. that's a live view from the marquis de lafayette hotel. a little sunshine to start with, but that's not happening now. grab an umbrella if you're heading out. scattered showers, but this afternoon, steadier showers and possibly thunderstorms. so far, lightning free. then it clears out this evening. that's not the end of the rain as we head into the weekend. here you can see the light showers moving through cape may. these are on the move, moving to the northeast at 30 miles per

hour. lewis, a few sprinkles, central delaware getting rain. light rain falling in atlantic count, moving to ship bottom right now. so far, it's been dry in philadelphia, but the clouds are here, and here's the rain that is going to bring an end to the dry streak. right now, wilmington seeing those showers moving through, and up 95 through northeastern maryland. the showers will move into salem county as well. no heavy rain here, but it is steadier, and lancaster and burks count, and you see spotty showers in the allentown area. the heavy downpours, not too many, just moderate showers, part of the west. clearing harrisburg and look at this. you can see the back edge of this line of showers, and there are breaks in the clouds. we could see sunshine before the day is done. but you'll probably need your rain gear at least for a couple hours before the sunshine breaks through, in bethlehem and easton, in the 60s. showers that will move through. there's a chance of some

thunderstorms, no guarantee we'll see lightning and thunder. the temps climbing into the upper 60s this afternoon. late day sunshine possible in the suburbs. less likely in philadelphia. we can't rule it out completely. the storms will be moving through so late afternoon breaks in the clouds are possible. for south jersey, haddonfield, also up to 71 degrees. cooler for glassboro, and it will stay cooler because of the wind coming off the water. 66 degrees with a chance of late day showers and thunderstorms at the shore. and some spotty showers morning, wilmington, and this afternoon, a chance of storms. this will not be the only chance for storms. the futurecast shows showers moving through this evening with less than a quarter inch in philadelphia. possibly a quarter inch of rain in reading where the rain has already come down. once those first rounds, first showers move through, the next round of showers is what we'll be watching for saturday.

mainly dry overnight and tomorrow morning, saturday morning, we'll start with sunshine and at lunch time, nice and sunny. a pretty good warmup saturday, but here comes the shower threat, coming through in the afternoon. and then we'll get some clearing, and see lots of sunshine. for today and tomorrow, low 70s for much of the area. 60s in the suburbs and the lehigh valley with sunshine starting things off saturday. and the storms later in the day, and definitely turning cooler on sunday. it's a one-day cooldown with temperatures in the 50s sunday afternoon. the wet weather for today and tomorrow will be gone by sunday. the winds will be stronger on sunday, coming out of the west, and we'll see the steady wind keeping things cool into monday. then a warming trend for tuesday, wednesday, and thursday. in fact, by thursday afternoon, 78 degrees. and then we're drying out for next weekend. well, our second annual weather education day set for next wednesday. and the entire first alert meteorologist team will be there with weather experiments for the
