hurled suppose spikes off an overpass. one person was injured. four cars were damaged. nbc 10's brandon hudson spoke to a driver who survived it happening to him. he's live in university city. >> reporter: jacqueline, someone threw railroad spikes like this one to give you a close look, about eight inches of length from this overpass here in university city. drivers were going this way down the road. police say someone had shattered glass in their eye. i want you to check this photo out. it shows one of the railroad spikes lodged into a wind shield. we found out the spikes damaged several other windshields and a car hood. officers did take a man who is in his 20s into custody and at this time he's being called a person of interest. early indications are he will at least be charged with trespassing for being on amtrak property. we spoke to a driver who described the impact on his car. >> as i'm driving i hear a boom. i look at my windshield. my whole windshield is cracked so i pull over. had some people in the car. so when i got out of the car, i

want first of all, wanted to see was something falling from, you know, the overpass? >> approximately eight railroad spikes found on the street here as a result of our investigation. one inside the car. they're about eight inches in length and they are iron so they're very heavy. looking at it coming from four stories up. >> reporter: this late at night, see how busy university avenue is. again, police have somebody in custody. he they're calling him a person of interest. the man who had glass in his eye refused medical treatment. live in university city, brandon hudson, nbc 10 news. who's watching you? this suv has a logo for google maps, but it really belongs to philadelphia police. that police suv can track and store your license plate data. the technology was already controversial and as nbc 10's drew smith reports, privacy advocates are asking why police pretended to be someone else.

these are automatic license plate readers, a technology some police departments have shown off for us in the past. they instantly photograph your tag and record an exact location and time you were there. this photo taken this week by penn professor matt blaze shows an unmarked police suv with the alpr mounted on top. and on the back rear window, a logo for google maps. >> there should be no reason to have to pretend to be a company that people trust deeply if what you're doing is not shady. >> reporter: molly hooper is an attorney for the aclu of pennsylvania. she says the department is jeopardizing police/community relations by hiding surveillance under a fake logo. >> it could be used to stalk someone. >> reporter: the people who posted those photos say the car was parked here on 13th street right underneath the pennsylvania convention center. we called philadelphia police at its headquarters tonight, but public affairs did not respond to questions on the phone. instead, sending a statement to nbc 10 saying in part, "placing

a decal on the vehicle was not approved through any chain of command." the department has now ordered the removal of the logos. >> there shouldn't be such a disconnect between what the officers are doing on the street and what the commissioner knows about what is going on. >> reporter: alprs have gotten results including an arrest in this 2014 road rage case. now people are tweeting about a terrible disguise and opponents want to know if there are other things being hidden when it comes to this technology. in center city, drew smith, nbc 10 news. this is going to be a busy weekend all over our area. there are big events happening in pennsylvania, new jersey and delaware. let's begin on the schuylkill river where the final day of the dad vail regatta starts tomorrow morning. today was day one. 300 rowers from as far away as california and canada are in philadelphia for the e vice president bla

event. it's also race weekend at dover international speedway. fans watched practice at the monster mile today. they also got an upclose look at the garage area and at the jet dry trucks that helped dry out the track from all that rain. fans are hoping those trucks won't be needed this weekend. >> never been rained out in 12 years. it's been -- we've had rain, but we've never been rained out. >> here with friends, family, everybody. so you're always going to come regardless of the weather. you don't change your plans. you just come. >> race weekend caps off with nascar's aaa 400 on sunday. there will be a show in the sky tomorrow and sunday in south jersey. today military families got a sneak peek at the power in the pines at joint base mcgwire dix lake hurst. the air force thunder birds will show off flying skills and the golden knights will perform stunts and acrobatics. the weather will be key for

all of these events but we're tracking weekend thunderstorms. let's bring in meteorologist sheena parveen with our nbc 10 first alert neighborhood weather. sheena, when can we expekd those storms? >> later in the day tomorrow, jacqueline. i think the first half of your saturday will actually be nice. look at the radar right now. different from what we had earlier this afternoon. i do want to point out one shower in parts of upper bucks county. this is the only shower we have in the viewing area but it's right around holland. some heavier rain there. if you are in that area and seeing the rain, you are the only one seeing the rain. what we are watching as we go into saturday, it's this area of rain right around chicago. showers and storms heading in our direction. so as we go into saturday, you can expect things to start to change. tonight, though, we continue to see skies clear tomorrow northern. 7:00 a.m., sunny skies. 60 for the morning temperature in wilmington. 57 philadelphia. through the afternoon, we climb to the low 70s but then by about 5:00 p.m., that's when we'll start seeing those storms move

in. coming up, we'll take a closer look at this. what you can expect with those storms and also how your sunday looks. >> all right, sheena. well, imagine working with a guy and in an instant he becomes a multimillionaire? that's what happened to employees at a new jersey company when one of their own won a share of the powerball jackpot. you first saw the winning family on nbc 10 news at 4:00. tonight, we learned one winner walked into his office earlier this week,s told his boss he'd hit the jackpot and quit. nbc 10's brandon hudson got the scoop. >> reporter: as the smith family introduced themselves to the world as the new powerball winners today, we noticed one of them, steven, wore a polo representing his employer, universal display corporation. we sat down with udc's ceo, dave abramson who told us about the day he said his family hit the jack not. >> i said are you kidding me? that's amazing.

absolutely fabulous. >> reporter: abramson said smith worked there for three years in the facilities and stockroom among other areas. the company made the official announcement to its employees today. >> everybody was saying, isn't that great about steve? >> i guess all of you think you wish it was me, right? >> reporter: smith will split the $429.6 million with his six sisters and mother. nbc to learned the mother bought the winning ticket from a 7-eleven in trenton, new jersey. the smith family will take the lump sum which means steven will pocket $35.5 million. he didn't tell his boss his plans but it doesn't matter. abramson just wants steven to be happy and take care of his loved ones. >> we love steve. we offered he could stay, we told him he could stay but he said he's moving on to greener pastures. >> reporter: i'm brandon hudson, nbc 10 news. >> yeah, greener indeed. talk about an unusual

sighting. someone spotted a bear wandering around wissahickon park. warning you not to approach the bear and keep your dogs on leashes. they plan to trap the bear move it to a less populated area. this is the park's first ever documented ba eed bear sighting camden schools, the school district is cutting more than 150 jobs as it tries to fix a budget deficit. about 40 of those positions belong to teachers. all vice principals are having their jobs eliminated. the rest of the layoffs include workers like security guards, clerks and custodians. the school system is trying to fix a $39 million budget gap. the system will be focusing new workers to focus on literacy and family engagement. tonight police are searching for a man who tried to sexually assault a student at rutgers university. they have issued an arrest

warrant for michael knight of newark, new jersey. police say he hit the victim in the face and tried to sexually assault her last week. it happened near van dike hall on the college avenue campus. if you have any information about his whereabouts, police want to hear from you. a man who's behind bars tonight after police say he led them on a high-speed chase that ran through six towns in south jersey yesterday. police tell nbc 10 michael myers robbed a shell gas station in washington township then broke into a windslowe township home acting like he was a victim. we spoke to the 82-year-old homeowner who went after that suspect who was desperate for a getaway car. >> say, don't you lose your life for a car. i see he's got the knife and was going after my stomach so i let him go. >> police say myers took off with the victim's car then led police on the high-speed chase. he was finally caught about an hour later. authorities are looking for a south jersey man who allegedly beat a man and his dog with a baseball bat.

that dog was seriously hurt. it happened during a fight yesterday in burlington county. authorities say darren de carlo hilt the man and his dog several times on begonia street in browns mills. a warrant has been issued for dec decarlo's arrest. in decision 2016, is it donald trump? the presumptive republican nominee is denying reports that he once posed as his own publicist. this after audio recordings like this one were made public. >> what's your name again? >> john miller. >> what is your position? >> handling pr because he gets so much of it. >> yeah. >> the "washington post" released this 25-year-old audio recording today. in it, a voice that sounds like trump's talks about the real estate magnate's dating life. the one who conducted the interview said there's no doubt

in her mind it was trump posing as his own pr. but he denied it on the "today" show. >> is it you? >> i don't know anything about it. i have many, many people trying to imitate my voice. you can imagine that. and this sounds like one of the scams. one of the many scams. doesn't sound like me. >> in a court case back in 199 0, trump testified under oath that he used a fake name on occasion. now to the democrats. former president bill clinton campaigned in the garden state today. he rallied for his wife, hillary, at the fayette county community college. clinton spoke about his wife's plans for affordable college and student death and contrasted them with bernie sanders. the former president also made a stop at mercer county. new jersey voters head to the polls june 7th. north dakota voters will caucus that same day. bernie sanders campaigned for support there today as you can see. he was all bundled up for a rally in bismarck. the vermont senator told the crowd his goal is to go to the

a warning for dog owners. sugarless gum, breath mints or toothpaste could be deadly to your pet. tonight, the fda is warning about an ingredient called

xylotol, a sugar substitute. if dogs eat it, they can get a dangerous drop in blood sugar. the fda says if your dog eats xyotol, take it to the vet immediately. tied up and held at gunpoint. a philadelphia family is shares their story after three thieves burst into their home. and tonight, it turns out the robbers may have targeted the wrong house. they broke into the home in somerton around 2:00 this morning. and tied everyone up. we spoke to the family and agreed no to show their faces on camera. they say the men demanded a pile of cash but the family had no idea what they were talking about. >> i said we don't have no cash. and that's when they figured out they were in the wrong house. one was telling the other this was the wrong house. this ain't the house, man. >> no one in the family was hurt. police have a rough description of the suspects. and are working on getting surveillance video from a nearby church. a presidential honor for a fallen philadelphia police

officer. president obama will posthumously award sergeant robert wilson iii the public safety officer medal of valor. wilson was shot and killed during a robbery at a north philadelphia gamestop store in march of last year. his family is expected to attend the white house ceremony monday. former temple university president has died. university officials tell us he passed away last night following a lengthy illness. he was temple's president from 1982 to 2000. when he retired, the liacouras center was renamed in his monitor. he was 85 years old. today is the day thousands of villanova university students have worked years for. the graduation day. president 173rd commencement ceremony was moved indoors because of today's rain, but that did not dampen the spirits of the class of 2016. villanova alum and naismith basketball hall of fame member delivered tonight's commencement

address. if you're planning on flying anywhere in the u.s. this summer, be prepared, you may be spending some time waiting. that's because the tsa is trying to cope with fewer ajigents on e job and more passengers in the sky. a plan is in place for the situation. increasing overtime hours, using more bomb-sniffing dogs and adding hundreds of new tsa agents next month. despite this, they want passengers to arrive early and be prepared to wait. superheroes of all sizes suited up for a night of fun in south jersey. the garden state discovery museum in cherry hill hosted its third annual calling all superheroes night. kids met their favorite superfriends while testing their own superpowers. we need a superhero to get rid of all this rain. sheena, help us out with that. >> i saw a bunch there that could help us. we have a nice dry spell from

now until tomorrow afternoon. not going to last very long. at least you can enjoy most of your saturday before the storms roll in. right now here's a look at the radar. we have a couple very small showers near parts of upper bucks county. not going to be moving through the area, though. what we are watching is farther back off to our west. so if i circle this for you, you can see the area of rain right around chicago. that we'll be watching as we go into tomorrow afternoon. so it's this whole area that's heading in our direction. that will be giving us thunderstorms later in the day tomorrow. some of these storms could be fairly strong. so, again, they're mostly in the afternoon. take a look at future weather. as we go through time here. tomorrow morning. and by the middle of the day tomorrow, we will be dry and we'll be sunny. so it will be really nice for most or your saturday. then we watch as those storms start to move in. now we're looking at 3:30 in the afternoon. lehigh valley. parts of berks county. approaching the philadelphia area. a line of thunderstorms. then by 5:00 p.m., right through the philadelphia area, delaware up toward parts of bucks county,

also mercer county then heading into new jersey, we could have a second line behind that by about 7:30. then that one will slide into new jersey as well. clearing as we go later into saturday night. so at least it's going to move through in time for sunday but we do have thunderstorms in the forecast tomorrow. some of those storms could be strong. so we could see pretty high winds with those. and brief heavy rain, also lightning. so tomorrow, temperature wise, before those storms get here, 70 for bethlehem, afternoon thunderstorms. reading 71 tomorrow. easton, 70 degrees. once the rain gets here, those temperatures will start dropping. phoenixville, 71 tomorrow. as well as newtown. philadelphia area coming in around 72 mt. airy, 73 in fairmount. and the dad vail regatta is continuing tomorrow. for most of it we'll be in the clear. 7:00 a.m., 57 and sunny. noon, mostly sunny, 73. 5:00 we'll have to really watch. 70 degrees. we expect thunderstorms at that

time. nj n new jersey tomorrow, haddonfield, 72 degrees. mostly the mid to upper 6 0s. atlantic city, 67. delaware, dover, 72. wilmington, 73. clearly sunday is going to be the better day. if you can get as much in saturday as you an before the storms get here, saturday is going to be a nice day before the afternoon hours. 72 pennsylvania suburbs with thunderstorms. sunday, 60 degrees and sunny and dry. cooler but it will also be windy. so just make sure you're aware of that. also your seven-day forecast always at the bottom of the screen for you. >> all right, sheena. a weekend of fun and fantasy is under way at the a.c. convention center. that's because atlantic city boardwalk con is back. it is dominated by comic book superheroes and science fiction. many of the fans are in costumes getting their fill of trivia collectibles and celebrities. it runs through sunday.

a celebration of student athletes tonight at penn's landing. the international student athlete academy hosted its annual spring gala. all the money raised goes to the isaa. an organization which believes using sports to make a difference in a young person's life can make a difference in the world. which, of course, it can. hey, john. >> you're exactly right. the one-run wonders were at it again tonight at citizens bank park and a phillies prospect makes his major league debut. and carson wentz, his eagles debut on the field for the first time for rookie camp. it's all next.

seasons. eagles rookie camp. all eyes on quarterback cart carson wentz today. his first workout with the birds. >> i'm really excited for it. >> carson wentz made his first throws as an eagle. he has heard from some of his teammates but he has not spoken to sam bradford. >> personally i don't think there will be a lot of tension. i think people might make it out to be but i think the coaches and everybody will be on the same page and i think it will be a really good working relationship for sure. i think it will benefit the team. we're going to compete. really everybody in that quarterback room, everybody in the entire organization is going to compete and push each other. >> reporter: and if the eagles decide to sit carson the entire season -- >> all i care about is winning so if the team's winning, i'm going to do whatever i can to help the team whether from a third string role, starter, doesn't matter. i'm going do what i can to prepare and help the team. we'll see how that plays out. >> reporter: even if bradford here, when the time comes he would like to earn his teammates' respect as a leader.
