"nbc 10 news" starts now. right now at 11:00 congressman on trial. opening statements are underway in the federal corruption trial of u.s. representative chaka fattah. he's accused of misusing millions of dollars and lying about it. good morning, i'm vai sikahema. the once prominent philadelphia politician recently lost his re-election bid for the first time in decades and now he faces jail time. "nbc 10" pamela osborne just stepped outside of the courtroom and, pam, give us an idea of what's going on. walk us through the proceedings. >> reporter: well, vai, right now the prosecution is laying out its case to jurors. it is a prosecution's claim that congressman fattah and the four other defendants in this case

were involved in about five different schemes which they allegedly transferred and stole money from various grants and funds in order to pay back an illegal million loan. that loan goes back to fattah's failed 2007 mayoral campaign. the money came back from federal grants, taxpayers and nonprofit organization founded by the congressman himself. according to prosecutors, the four people on trial, former aides of fattah, each made every single move with the knowledge of fattah and at the direction of fattah who this morning stopped to talk to reporters on his way in to court. >> well, first of all, i am thankful and grateful for the strength of my family and i'm extraordinarily appreciative of the great legal team from the firm that will be leading my effort here. i want to say thank you to the

voters and the citizens who have supported me and for their prayers over these many, many years. >> reporter: the defendants in this case are facing multiple charges including racketeering and money laundering. now two of fattah's former aides have already pleaded guilty. we'll have another update for you in a half hour. reporting live outside of federal court this morning, i'm pamela osborne, "nbc 10 news." >> thank you. we'll see you again at the bottom of the hour. stay with "nbc 10" all day for congressman fattah's corruption trial. you can get updated information on "nbc 10's" app and nbc10.com. we have breaking news. convicted killer rafael rabb will serve his full ten years behind bars. a little more than an hour ago montgomery county district attorney kevin steel announced that the pennsylvania parole board has denied rabb's release. rabb is serving a sentence for bludgeoning his wife ellen

gregory rabb to death as she wrapped christmas gifts in 2006. the family won a civil judgment against rabb totaling more than $124 million. >> it's clear not only to everyone in the courtroom but to the jury of his peers that he was a murderer, that he had premeditated and killed ellen. >> both prosecutors and the victim's family strongly oppose rob's early release. he's not expected to be out of prison until early next year. a teenager is in extremely critical condition after someone shot at him seven times last night overnight. it happened near moore and south hollywood streets in south philadelphia. the victim is 17 years old. police are looking for the gunman. and flames damaged a home in center city early this morning. this fire started around 4:00 a.m. at 10th and locust streets. most of the fire was in the back of this house. no one was hurt.

and in southwest philadelphia it took firefighters just minutes to knock down flames at a home on millet street. no one was hurt. investigators are looking for a cause in that fire. police say a philadelphia man doused his girlfriend with gasoline, set her on fire and then left her for dead while in a buck's county hotel. >> >> reporter: can you tell us what happened? >> that was kevin small after his preliminary hearing. if you didn't hear it clearly, he said he lost it. police charged him with setting fire at the lincoln motel in bensalem that killed melissa bacon smith. small threw gas on her while she was smoking. it also caused an evacuation at the motel. >> people were running down the hallway screaming. everybody was like, get out, get out, get out. there's fire. >> we believe she reached out to him and yelled his name and he left her in there to die. >> police say surveillance video

from the wawa show him putting gas in a coffee cup. melissa bacon smith leaves behind four kids and seven grandchildren. a water main break created a mess in west philadelphia. the break at 43rd and market flooded a nearby fire house. the fire department officials say the flooded station remains open. the firefighters are still on duty. dialysis center is also affected. the stretch market street is closed off for part of the day. water department crews are working on repairs. happening now in cumberland county, grief counselors are meeting with students to help them cope with two students who died in a crash after the prom. they're collecting money for deja and mckayla mosley. they died on the way home from a post prom celebration in ocean city early saturday morning. two other teens were also hurt

in this crash. state police are still investigating. now your "nbc 10" first alert weather. >> there's no shortage of sunshine out there this morning. you've got to hold on to your hats though. a little bit breezy. we're dealing with gusty winds as we take a live look right now at the jersey shore from our camera at the marquis did he lafayette hotel in cape may. glenn hurricane scharwartz is here. high, glenn. >> doesn't feel like the middle of may. the temperatures are way below average but we have wind on top of that making it feel even colder. 52 in coatsville, 54 in wilmington. 53 in trenton. some places were down into the 30s this morning. we're seeing temperatures barely into the 50s in some parts of chester county, west callan township.

51 ten net square, 51 melbourne. 51 degrees at this hour this time of the year. fort washington, 52. new town, 52 at the grease. the wind straight out of the west. these are the sustained winds. 21 miles an hour in philadelphia. 24 miles an hour in millville. so it's gusty. you actually have a little bit of a wind chill out there and so even though these temperatures get into the mid 60s, we have a lot of sunshine, it's not going to feel like it. you need the coats today. you'll need them again tonight. by 10:00 temperatures dropping to 57 in philadelphia and in some of the suburbs. look at that, 53 degrees by 10:00. it's unseasonably chilly today. it will be unseasonably chilly tonight as well. lehigh valley only 61 by 6:00 and dropping to 51 by 10:00. not going to be quite as cold as

last night but it's pretty chilly. in new jersey, 63 degrees by 6:00 and then cooling down from there. we have warmer weather this week but we also have some rain. the timing on that coming up. also, glenn, this morning, a teenage girl is out of the hospital after a group of other girls jumped her at the montgomery county carnival. this happened at the boys and girls carnival. two girls got into a fight and then several other girls got involved and they beat the victim. investigators say all of the girls are under 18. they are still trying to identify everyone involved in that fight. ocean county police arrested a convicted felon who was armed with an ak 47 assault weapon and the man bears a striking resemblance to adolf hitler. take a look at bruise j. post iii. they spotted post near a suspicious vehicle in the woods. they say he was wearing combat

gear and gave indications of what the department described as possible white supremist activity. in addition to the ak-47, officers say post had a handgun and ammo. police arrested him and charged him with unlawful possession of weapons. today new jersey lawmakers will consider a bill to raise the minimum wage. the measure would bump the rate to $10.10 an hour next year. it would then increase annually for four years. lawmakers say if the governor refuses to sign the bill they'll push for a constitutional amendment. right now the minimum wage is $8.38 an hour. the highest in our area, delaware, is next at $8.25 an hour. in pennsylvania the minimum wage is $7.25 an hour. lawmakers return to harrisburg today with six weeks before the deadline to iron out differences for the coming year's spending plan. the current budget wasn't settled until last month and the process looks to be rocky again

this time. governor tom wolf still wants a broad tax increase to fund schools and close the deficit. republican lawmakers want to cut costs and are opposed to a tax increase. happening now philadelphia officials are announcing a new homeless outreach strategy for center city. they're naming four center city locations as hot spots. they will deploy street outreach teams to the hot spots to help the homeless with housing and social services. donald trump is set to visit the garden state later this week for a pair of fundraisers. one benefits new jersey governor chris christie. on thursday he'll join christie at the national guard armory in mercer county. all funds will go towards christie's presidential race debt. the united kingdom's chancellor responded to trump's comments that he might have a poor relationship with the chancellor. george osborne said if trump is

elected, brittain will still talk to him. >> there's an american presidential candidate and we will talk to him because it's in our interests to talk to allies like the united states of america. >> osborne said that he and cameron stand by their opposition to trump's post muslim ban. now the democrats who are looking ahead to their next primary tomorrow in kentucky. at a rally in louisville yesterday hillary clinton took on trump as well as her democratic rival, bernie sanders. take a look. >> there is a big difference in this primary campaign between me and my opponent, bernie sanders. i voted to bail out the auto industry and he voted against it because i wanted to save those millions of jobs. >> hillary clinton! >> clinton has three rallies scheduled today, kentucky. we just found out her daughter chelsea has two events in monmouth county. sanders, meanwhile, is stopping

for a couple of rallies in san juan. it holds its democratic caucuses on june 5th. sanders trails clinton. he says he's in a better position to beat trump because he does well with both democrats and independents. the democrats are still vying for votes ahead of new jersey's primary on june 7th. check out the full primary calendar on the "nbc 10" app. president obama made history at are you the zbers by becoming the first sitting president to deliver the commencement address there. more than 200 students boarded a special train bound for new brunswick yesterday. they didn't graduate at the ceremony but they did get to be part of history. during his address the president took several swipes at donald trump although he never mentioned him by name. >> the world is more interconnected than ever before. and it's becoming more connected every day. building walls won't change that.

politics and in life, ignorance is not a virtue. >> president obama was given an honorary law degree by rutgers during the commencement. the main graduation ceremony for students at penn state university is underway right now. students are still buzzing about donald trump and vice president joe biden attending the graduation yesterday. they were at penn for the wharton school of business ceremony not as politicians but as loved ones of grads. trump cheered on his daughter tiffany, who's a graduate, while vice president biden watched his granddaughter naomi get her diploma. neither of them spoke keeping their focus on the graduates. some of them thought they brought a lot of distraction to the event while others were thrilled to see such high profile guests. >> and i think it says something to the students everywhere, that education is very important for these people to take their time

and come out and see what's going on with some of the best because some of the best students go here. >> today's commencement speaker is star of the musical "hamilton." parts of southeastern texas are waking up in knee deep water this morning. torrential rain in the corpus christi area left many streets under water. a number of drivers ignored repeated warnings and tried to make their way through flooded streets only to get stuck. police deemed a number of roads impassable. a number of schools are closed due to the hazardous conditions. now your "nbc 10" first alert weather with chief meteorologist glenn hurricane schwartz. >> yeah, that was not smart what that driver was trying to do. remember the slogan, turn around, don't drown. can't drive into deep water, especially moving water. well, we don't have any of that right now and none of that texas stuff is coming this way.

temperatures are in the 50s with a lot of sunshine and also a lot of wind. we had temperatures down into the 30s in parts of the area overnight last night and we tied a low in alan town at 37 degrees. right now it's 53 in cookstown, 53 degrees in alan town. warmed up some from the low of 37. easton at 54 degrees. there were several places that got into the 30s overnight. nothing on the radar right now close by, but we do have rain that's streaming eastward from the middle of the country and it's going to be affecting us over the next couple of days. not during the day today but tomorrow we have a threat of at least some showers. this particular model brings a few showers mainly -- well, north and well south of the city. and then it brings in a lot more

rain during wednesday morning and again this model even goes into the afternoon. next wednesday a pretty wet day. we'll have the computer guidance coming in and update that forecast during the afternoon shows and then thursday things clear out. and we start to get normal again, but we're cool and windy. look at these wind gusts. 32 miles an hour in millville and also in wilmington we're gusting up close to 30 miles an hour in much of the rest of the area. so when you combine that with these temperatures, there's only 59 yesterday. we were gusting up to 35 miles an hour. today about 66. tomorrow about 62 degrees and look at these temperatures. the average high is 74. we're 10 degrees colder in landsdale. more than 10 degrees colder in allentown.

atlantic city, closer to land breeze today. wilmington, 64 degrees as well. as we go through the next few days, temperatures way below average. some showers tomorrow. even more coming in on wednesday. and in the suburbs look at the low tonight, 41 degrees. some places could get into the upper 30s again but not quite as cold as last night. lehigh valley only up to 62 today. down to 41 tonight and then tomorrow night not quite as cold. at the jersey shore, once again, fairly mild today because of the west wind. by wednesday we're only to 59 degrees for the high temporary few -- temperature. we'll be back and see if the numbers go up. see you again, glenn. honoring a philadelphia hero. details in the national honor being presented in just minutes to the family of police sergeant robert wilson iii.

there until 1966. it's historic. do you sense that? >> well, i think it is. i think it's a great role model for our students and faculty and staff who are female. i think the most important thing is that i work there. >> president wollman, what has been your biggest challenge so far as president of the university? >> well, you know, we are just doing so well at widener, i would say the challenge is taking us to the next level. we're a national leader in civics engagement. our students are 20% more likely than other students to be involved in experiential learning, internships, research, hands-on learning. our students, we just received results that we hit record student satisfaction. our students are in the top 20% in the country of the salaries they earn mid career. my challenge is to take us to

the next level. >> president wollmer, your college is in the heart of the city. how are you working to un night your university with the community of chester? >> as we mentioned, we're one of the national leaders in civic engagement. a great deal of that work goes on in chester. we are in partnership with the leaders, elected owe fillings alls, nonprofit leaders. we have a number of community clinics in the city, everything from nursing and physical therapy. we work in the schools. we also work with the public schools there. we do everything we can using chester as an applied learning laboratory for our students and that's why we're leading in civic engagement and service learning in the country. and we're seeing that we can really make a difference and our students are learning to work with diverse communities which is wonderful.

lying about it. less than a month after losing his re-election bid, congressman fattah is trying to avoid llow losing his freedom. pamela osborne has stepped out of the courtroom to tell us what's going on. pam, tell us what's going on. >> reporter: they told jurors that congressman fattah abused his position, his authority by taking bribes, stealing money from federal agencies, taxpayers and the nonprofits he, himself, created. the 59-year-old is on trial with four of his former aides. the prosecution claims that all five defendants are part of the several schemes. five have been identified, names being explained to jurors now as we speak. according to the prosecution in opening arguments today, at least one of those schemes involved repayment of hundreds of thousands of dollars the congressman owed back for an illegal campaign loan. fattah denies the charges against him. he had this to say to his supporters on the way in.

issues. ,yk more injured. they were on their way to a casino on the texas/mexico border. they describe it as the worst commercial vehicle accident she's seen in years. it was raining at the time of the accident. the national transportation safety board is investigating all aspects. 2h÷ will look a the the highway, the vehicle, the driver and company operations. >> reg gau lators in louisiana ordered one of the company's two buses out of service after safety reviews. it's not clear yet if that same bus was involved in this crash. that's a look at a scary scene on the tappan zee bridge in new york's lower hudson valley. this was last week. drivers dash cam recorded a

tractor-trailer rolling over on its side on friday morning's rush hour. flying debris hit five vehicles on the tappan zee. no one was hurt. the crash was caused by a failure of the truck's suspension system. new this morning, travel troubles at chicago's o'hare airport. over the weekend passengers waited in long lines at tsa checkpoints. some stretching more than two hours. the backup got so long many passengers missed their flights. today the problem was back. tsa checkpoints are under staffed nationwide. there's a promise to hire hundreds of screeners next month. and two soccer teams in england are now scheduled to play their match tomorrow after a bomb scare forced a stadium evacuation yesterday and canceled a contest. officials made tens of thousands of fans leave the stadium. investigators say the suspicious device was actually fake. a private company left it behind after training exercise.

they had bomb sniffing dogs. >> officials with the premier league defended their decision and said the safety of the fans and workers come first. there's a sign of progress with the ongoing verizon strike. striking workers and negotiators have agreed to return to the bargaining table tomorrow. tomas perez met with both sides yesterday in washington, d.c. the striking verizon workers had been on the picket lines for months. the union's accused verizon for outsourcing jobs and cutting benefits. doctors in boston announced this morning that they have performed the first penis transplant in the united states. massachusetts general hospital surgeons attached the organ

during a 15-hour procedure last week. the recipient is a 64-year-old man who lost most of his own penis to cancer in 2012. doctors think the patient should be able to use the new penis within a few weeks. a florida beach goer is out of the hospital this morning after suffering an unusual kind of shark attack. fire rescue workers in boca raton say the victim was bitten by a small two foot nurse shark and then walked out of the water with the shark still attached to her arm. by the time emergency crews arrived the shark had died but the animal was stuck to her arm still. rescuers took her to the hospital to have the shark removed. marine experts say it's not unheard of for nurgs sharks to bite their victims and just hang on. >> tiny teeth so it actually gets a really good bite by sucking it into its mouth. usually they don't let go. >> that shark expert says he's heard of about a dozen cases of

nurse sharks accompanying their victims to the hospital. two yellowstone park tourists are in hot water for wrangling a bison calf and putting it in an suv. they pulled up to the rangers station with the animal in the back of the vehicle. they thought the wild animal was too cold. it's a federal crime to get closer than 25 feet to wild animals. the two were ticketed and the animal was returned to the wild. we're getting a stunning view of the sunrise this morning from space. american astronaut jeff williams tweeted the sun coming up on the horizon last friday. they get to see 16 sunrises a day. spectacular view. well, up next, helping henry. we have an update on south jersey -- a south injuries bring boy who had visited us here a

a new study shows a lot of leftover pain medication is not being properly disposed of creating the risk that it could

fall into the wrong hands. university of michigan poll revealed nearly half of parents whose child had leftover pain medication kept the extra pills at home where they were accessible to teens and their friends. however, when doctors advised parents on what to do with the extra narcotics, they were twice as likely to properly dispose of them. leftover drugs should be returned to the doctor's office, pharmacy, or given to local authorities. new research reveals a father's age and lifestyle can affect his offspring as well as future generations. older age is linked with higher rates of mental illness, autism and birth defects in children while paternal obesity increases the risk of diabetes and brain cancer. a father's alcohol use has a large impact on children. a newborn can be diagnosed with feet tall alcohol syndrome even when the mother has never had a drink. a teenager has single handedly made the summer brighter for students suffering from usher's syndrome.

it's a disease that causes vision and hearing loss and she's not only raised awareness but also won a lot of money and she's using it to help kids who have usher's syndrome feel normal again. "nbc 10's" katy zachry explains from mount laurel. >> reporter: a lot of people in this community know henry, a young boy with vision and hearing loss, but few are as affected by him as a student from this middle school. she's eighth grader gabrielle turgeon. they're family friends. henry has usher's syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that leaves people deaf and blind. he can barely see and he has cochlear implants to help with the hearing loss. he got great news to smile. danielle wrote an essay for a charity fund-raiser and she won, $1,000 was awarded to henry's charity which means he and several friends can attend a

normal summer camp for free. >> what are some of the things you do at the camp? >> i swim, play a little bit. >> the way i'm passionate about it, it wasn't even like a hard topic. i just sat at the computer and just started typing. >> reporter: henry's the son of our sky force 10 pilot. the camp is a normal one with all the classic activities for kids which helps make henry and those friends feel normal, too. reporting from mount laurel, katy zachry, "nbc 10 news." stroke is the leading cause of permanent disability in the united states, and when you think of stroke victims, many people think of the elderly and those in poor health. our next guest will shatter your thoughts about those who suffer from stroke. devida suffered three strokes in her early 30s and she's on a mission to raise awareness and recognize the signs and the symptoms of a stroke.

devida, thank you very much for being here. tell us what happened to you. >> i had three strokes in my early 30s, as you mentioned, and i had one at 30, 32, and 33. and the thing about it is i did not have any known causes that causes one to have a stroke. i did into the have high blood pressure, diabetes, or rare blood disorder. i've dedicated my life to raising stroke awareness and helping stroke survive offers and their family through a nonprofit called healthy thoughts. >> what do you think is the biggest misconception out there about a stroke? >> i think the biggest misconception is that it can't happen to you. strokes can happen at any ajt and a stroke can even happen to an infant in utero. >> well, we appreciate that very much, that information. davida, the order my steps 5k stroke walk is happening this

55 degrees in new jersey. 54 in philadelphia. let's take a look at delaware now. we have a few places that are starting to warm up a little bit. newark at 59. glasgow at 58. odessa at 55. we're getting a pretty strong west wind today. the beaches are going to be every bit as warm as the inland areas. you can see dewey beach, rehoboth. 57 degrees. bethanie beach, 51. that's the warmest spot on the map. if you want to check your forecast, the seven day is constantly scrolling on the screen here. multiple forecasts for multiple areas. not just philadelphia anymore. you don't have to wait until the end of the weather cast. we don't have anything on the radar and really not much in the satellite. hardly any clouds around. the next area of rain coming into illinois. moving pretty fast. not all that heavy. it certainly is unseasonably cold again. we were 76 on saturday but only

59 for the high yesterday. the average high 74 today and tomorrow and maybe wednesday as well. in the 60s. not mid 70s. plus we have rain on the way coming in from the west. not during the day today or tonight but into tomorrow, and there we go in the afternoon. the computer model has some generally light rain moving in from the west. it will be cloudier and that will help keep the temperature down. then another area of rain potentially coming in on wednesday although some other computer models are moving this out much, much faster. we're going to be getting updates over the next couple of hours and we'll show you these new future casts coming up starting at 4:00 this afternoon. but then by thursday we certainly clear out and that will allow the temperature to go back up, at least a little bit. now tomorrow, different winds. southwest only 5 to 10 miles an hour. it will be cloudier and wetter.

bethlehem with some showers at 65 degrees. westchester 66 with showers. newtown, only 60 with some showers. mount airy, 60 with some showers. fairmount, 62. not an all day rain tomorrow but you're probably going to need the rain gear. haddon field at 62. trenton at 61 with the threat of showers. same story at the shore with temperatures in the 60s as well. so tomorrow a little bit of wet weather. tomorrow night and into wednesday a little bit of wet weather as well. you can see that here on the forecast over the next few days. temperatures do not get into the 70s. lehigh valley down to 41 degrees tomorrow morning. so it's another chilly start but not as cold as what we saw this morning. the jersey shore it's just as warm as it is in the rest of new jersey today because of that west wind. that's a land breeze.

so the shore does not see the cooler weather, but you're going to see some showers tomorrow and some more coming in on wednesday. here's the ten-day outlook. where are those mid 70s? later on in the week. so wednesday only 64. thursday we dry out into the 70s. friday into the 70s. we've got another system potentially coming in over the weekend with some showers saturday and maybe even into sunday but it's not going to be 59 degrees like it was yesterday. and you can see more temperatures in the 70s as we go into early next week. we'll be right back.
