search have located parts of the plane debris. about 180 miles north of alexandria. >> investigators are operating on a theory that terror brought the plane down, but nothing is being ruled out at this point. no one on the jet's manifest has been found on any terror watch list so far. >> we have complete coverage, beginning with bill neely. he's in cairo this morning. bill, good morning to you. >> good morning, matt. from cairo airport, where investigators from france and egypt are meeting to try to solve a mystery with few clues. egypt's military though saying it's found debris. that could be anything. but right now, anything is welcomed. any clue that might help solve this mystery. >> reporter: it's still a search and rescue operation. the search is intense, but rescue seems a long shot. no sign of life. no clear clues after what made

flight 804 fall from the sky. it didn't just fall. it veered to the left, then spiralled more than 20,000 feet before plunging into the sea off egypt. one egyptian minister suggesting a bomb as the most likely cause. but u.s. intelligence officials tell reuters a review of satellite imagery has shown no evidence of an explosion. nothing though is being ruled out. >> we have seen a desire on the part of extremists around the world, including some extremists in the middle east, to carry out attacks targeting the international aviation system. >> reporter: french investigators have arrived at cairo airport, where for relatives of those on board, it's an agonizing wait. here and in europe. richard was on the missing flight. >> i still hope for the best, but i never would have expected

this to happen. i never would expect to wake up to this. >> reporter: the terror group isis is active in egypt. last year, brought down a russian passenger plane here with 224 on board. bombed, it claimed, with explosives in a soda can. u.s. officials saying none of the plane's passengers was on a terror watch list. officials in paris are checking security at the airport from where the plane left. at los angeles airport, security has been tightened in direct response to the disappearance of the plane and the uncertainty. >> so far, at least, we have no claim of responsibility or evidence that this was an intentional act. >> reporter: a u.s. search plane is part of a growing fleet, scouring a sea almost a mile deep for any debris. but so far, none confirmed from the missing plane. >> well, the debris the egyptians have spotted now has to be recovered and brought here

for analysis. still, no proof of bombs or claims by isis. they are quick to both after the metrojet attack several months ago. this remains a tragedy without explanation. >> bill neely, thank you very much. let's get more on the leading theories. what investigators are looking for this morning. tom costello is on the story for us. good morning. >> good morning. more questions than answers this morning, but a growing number of clues that investigators are looking to tell them what might have happened in the final moments before this plane vanished. >> reporter: this morning, investigators are zeroing in on egyptair 804's final 24 hours. it made five trips in the day before in the mediterranean, landing in paris, tunis, cairo. investigators are seeing who has access to the plane, including maintenance crews, caterers and baggage handlers, all under a

magnifying glass of interviews and background checks. >> so far, at least, we have no claim of responsibility or evidence that this was an intentional act. but the fbi, as you would expect, is working with our partners around the world to try and gain a better understanding of what happened. >> reporter: today, a major question. did a so-called back door exist for someone to plant a bomb on the plane? intelligence officials tell nbc news early data suggests some sort of explosion on board. >> they're also going to look for the defamation patterns in the metal, to say was any of it sp out and is there residue on the metal? >> reporter: it's a leading theory and far from fact, though it's made before. in february, a suicide bomber blew a hole over somalia. airport workers were seen handing him a laptop inside the airport. last october, isis released this picture of a purported soda can bomb it says brought down the russian metrojet plain over

egypt's sinai peninsula. >> it's rare for them to take more than 12 hours to issue a claim of responsibility for a major act of international terrorism. it's a rarity. doesn't mean it doesn't happen. >> reporter: up veinvestigators to get their hands on the plane's black boxes. conversations between the crew and any sounds of explosions. like data that could piece together the mystery. this morning, los angeles international airport has stepped up security, as airports across the world confront another blow to aviation safety. >> security experts at charles de gaulle in paris insist their airport is very tight. they revoke the access badge if they have even the slightest doubt about any staff member. but the plane involved in the crash, as we mentioned, made multiple trips on wednesday. cairo, tunis, back to cairo, paris, before returning to cairo again.

investigators need to backtrack and determine who had access to the plane at all the airports. back to you. >> tom costello in washington for us, thank you. greg fiis a former investigator with the ntsb. we have a plane at attitude, 37,000 feet. something monumental happens, it turns sharply to the left, circles to the right and drops out of the sky. there is in distress call. what jumps out at you? >> matt, one of the things about the motion of the aircraft that turned to the left and then the spiraling to the right sounds, to me, as though the airport is, of course, out of control. but whether or not that was because the pilots were trying to regain control and the airport still was in tact enough to do that, or whether or not that was a result of an explosion, the airplane was uncontrollable and uncommandable by the crew, that's going to be the question that needs to be questioned by investigation.

they're going to have to get that information from the cockpit voice recorder and/or the flight data recorder. there's just not enough fidelity in the radar data to tell them that story. >> egyptian officials are saying, once again, they believe they've found wreckage. we'll see if that turns out to be the case. if you have wreckage that is submerged in water, will you still be able to find explosive residue if something like that exists? if this were a bomb. >> savannah, with the wreckage in the water, as long as it doesn't get washed -- and that is, as long as the exposed parts aren't continually being washed either by wave or tidal action or any kind of grit and debris, sand on the bottom -- there still should be residue impregnated in any kind of explosion. the particles that are embedded in the metal. any of the debris, if it's blown from inside the aircraft out. that is, the metal itself.

there should still be residue that forensic folks can actually determine whether or not that was an explosion or that was some sort of deformation due to the breakup of the aircraft. >> i want to go back to what happened in the plane after this event. 37,000 feet is way up in the air. are you surprised -- i know the idea is aviate, navigate and call for help. are you surprised there was no distress call, considering how far the plane fell? >> this has always been a question. it was a question in metrojet. also a question with ms17 years ago. whatever event transpired or took place, it gives investigators an idea whatever happened was catastrophic in nature. if the crew was dealing with a mechanical malfunction or

failure, their attention is on regaining control of the airplane. the radio call is the last thing they'll do. especially in the recent past, we know because of the catastrophic nature of whatever happen happened, especially with metrojet where it exploded and came out of the sky, this leads beliefs to be something that prevented the pilots from making a call. >> working with the federal government on security matters, michael, we don't know what brought down the plane, but officials are suspecting that terrorism may be involved. if so, it seems two possibilities arise. either somebody on the inside did it. airline or employee planted something. or more disturbingly, someone was able to get it through security at charles de gaulle airport in paris.

what stands out to you? >> that's the two most likely possibilities. if the flight had been going from cairo to paris, we wouldn't be as surprised because, truthfully, the security in cairo is much looser. on the ramp, insiders and the screening. but paris, france, london, western cities, these have world-class screening techniques. they have world-class security. so if a bomb was smuggled, either in carry-on baggage or cargo, this marks a sophisticated attack. again, as you said, it's too early. but the idea of getting past our best western security is very, very troublesome to intelligence officials. >> and there are two options there. one, these people, if it is terrorism, could have gotten lucky in getting something somewhat traditional. an explosive device on the plane. a bigger fear, i think, is could they have developed something that can pass through without being detect sed?

>> that's right, matt. terrorists like things that work and will rarely use something they know will likely be detected if people screen it well. they're likely to innovate, use something with a low likelihood of detection. that's the biggest concern, that they have innovated. we've seen the innovation over time. the underwear bomber. the printed bomber. the bomber referred to in the soda can. that's always the concern. the movement of bomb making knowledge from yemen to syria to elsewhere is a true concern. >> just a couple seconds, but mike, the fact that no terror group has taken responsibility and, of course, we all know they're usually quick to do so, what does that tell you? what do you make of that? >> if i was in the intelligence community now, i'd be more interested in what people were saying not publicly, but privately. who is talking about what? did people say, look, we had a success, that no one has taken public claim of responsibility. i wouldn't write much into that. >> michael, appreciate it.

thank you. in the meantime, presidential hopefuls donald trump and hillary clinton are weighing in on the egyptair crash, while sharpening their attacks against each other. clinton going so far as to say trump is not qualified to be president. nbc's kristen welker has more on that. good morning to you. >> matt, good morning to you. the jabs between donald trump and hillary clinton will likely only get tougher today. as we saw last night when trump took direct aim at clinton during a fundraiser for chris christie. polls show the anticipated face-off is shaping up to be a nail biter. >> reporter: donald trump using a new jersey rally for chris christie to flex his foreign policy muscles, saying definitively the egyptair disaster was an act of terror. >> if anybody thinks it wasn't blown out of the sky, you're 100% wrong, folks. >> reporter: trump's comments aimed at hillary clinton, who slammed trump for tweeting earlier, the egyptair crash looks like yet another terrorist

attack without hard evidence. trump mocking his likely general election rival. >> he shouldn't be running for office. doesn't have the right. i'm saying to myself, what just happened 12 hours ago? a plane was blown out of the sky. >> it does appear that it was an act of terrorism. >> reporter: this just hours after clinton used her strongest language yet to argue trump fails the test to be commander in chief. >> i know how hard this job is, and i know that we need steadine steadiness, as well as strength and smarts in it. i have concluded he is not qualified to be president of the united states. >> reporter: clinton accusing the presumptive gop nominee of promoting a dangerous foreign policy, including his proposed muslim ban. >> when you say, we're going to bar all muslims, we have seen how donald trump is being used to essentially be a recruiter for more people to join the cause of terrorism.

>> reporter: trump wasting no time, firing back. writing in a statement, clinton has bad judgment and is unfit to serve as president. the latest poll shows clinton leading trump by only six points nationally. first, she has to win her primary battle with bernie sanders, who is showing no signs of letting up. >> i will be the nominee for my party, chris. that is already done, in effect. there is no way that i won't be. >> now, even though the race is nearly mathematically out of sanders' reach, his campaign balked at clinton's comments. emphasizing a number of states still have to vote. now, as for today, trump will try to rally the conservative base when he headlines a speech at the convention for the national rifle association. clinton will attend a fundraiser in austin. her aides say she'll campaign in new jersey and california in the coming days, states she wants to win so she heads into the come ven -- convention on solid ground. al is with us.

golf icon says he's returning the money. adding that mickelson takes, quote, full responsibility for the decisions and associations that led him to becoming part of this investigation. in its complaint, the sec says the stock tips were provided by billy walters, who from 2008 to 2012 learned of highly confidential information concerning the company dean foods. according to the sec, mickelson owed money to walters, one of two defendants in the case, and used the tips to help pay off his debts. >> there hasn't been fallout in terms of his sponsorships. two of the sponsors who have been with him a long time say they're accepting he's taking responsibility. >> reporter: mickelson is one of golf's most successful players, with a net worth of $180 million, and earning $48 million last year just from endorsements. >> he's still a fan favorite, and i don't think this is going to have a huge impact on his popularity among the fans. this finding in the lawsuit, i think it'll be a footnote in

of new york, we decided to film him. >> i think everyone comes away with the same reaction. how did you get this access, but why on earth would anthony weiner grant that kind of access, knowing what he knew about himself? any insight? >> it's a great question. as you can see in the film, it's a question that we actually pose to anthony. anthony does give us an answer at the end, when he wanted to be viewed as the full person he was and not a punch line. that was our intention. take someone who had been ridiculed and reduced and offer a more complex portrait. >> some people in other parts of the country might not remember, but when he decided to run for mayor, he was doing well, at first. then along come allegations of more sexting. >> reporter: you surprised he didn't say, cameras out of here? >> when he started in the race, no one knew what was going to happen. then he was at the top of the polls. then the new revelations from

his sexting emerge. as elise said, i think he understood there was a possibility of his version to be told that went beyond the tabloid headlines. when these new relations emerged, he recognized there was value in having another version of the story documented. >> were there ever times, elise or josh, when he said, let's have the cameras stop rolling? >> josh was filming for the majority of the campaign. >> there was a ground rule going in. if ever anyone wanted me to stop filming or turn off the camera, leave the room, of course we'd respect the boundaries. you can see a few of the moments in the film. >> huma abedin is a close personal aide to hillary clinton. there is a portion of the documentary where the staff of the mayoral campaign is getting ready to air their grievances against him. though she's been devastated by these, she says, make sure you smile on the way out.

>> i did not love my 20s. >> really? >> they were a struggle. trying to find your place. >> right. >> living in not so great apartments and not knowing where i was going in life. but i do love the 40s. the reason we ask is there is a survey. 62% of the people would not want to be 25 again. a lot of people identify with the struggle and not knowing what you're doing. 71% say they were happiest after turning 40. i agree. i think your 40s are where you find yourself. you're comfortable in life. you know where you're going. usually by then, your life goals have somewhat fallen into place a little bit. >> i'm over 60, and i don't know my goals. >> even now in my 40s, a lot of answers i thought would be available are not. we still have a level of uncertainty. you say a bad apartment? well, you might have a house but now you have mortgage worries. the money problems never go away. the children. the problems get bigger. when you're 25, you're like,
