we're looking ining with our c. that'll be our best way to get any type of eyes on any survivor or debris we can find. >> reporter: on this mission, they see nothing that can help. the search for answers is intensifying. egyptian teams flying over the sea, a robot submarine searching under. >> we have been recovering wreckage. we have been recovering human remains. other parts of the plane. >> reporter: but there's no sign the life vests or clothing have helped investigators find the cause of the plane's disappearance. so the agony deepens for waiting families. for the parents of a young flight attendant, for the father of the pilot. who called his son a hero. >> i feel sad for my son. >> reporter: the pilot's colleagues in the dark about the cause. >> you have no answers at the moment. >> we don't have any answers. the answers will be in the investigation. >> reporter: the pilot,

mohamed shoukair, had been promoted four days before. he was calm as he talked to air traffic control before the trash. >> egyptair 804, good day, uh, good night. >> reporter: the most likely cause is thought to be a bomb. >> 30% something is wrong in the aircraft. >> 70%, it's terrorism? >> yes. >> reporter: in its latest statement, isis said nothing about the missing plane. investigators are focused now on the data showing computer failures and smoke around the cockpit minutes before the plane disappear disappeared. >> egypt's president says the investigation could take a long time. the airline told families that finding the bodies could take weeks or longer. meanwhile, those critical black box flight recorders will keep sending out signals, pings, for another three and a half weeks.

then the batteries will die. so this is a race against time. savannah and willie? >> bill neely in cairo, thank you. let's bring in former ntsb investigator, greg fithe. good morning. >> morning. >> they found just a little wreckage. not to minimize how difficult this search is, but are you surprised they haven't found more? >> i am, savannah. given the fact that when we were talking about mh-370, we knew the plane had flown out of radar coverage. we didn't have satellites looking in the indian ocean. here, we have a heavily radared environment. not only from the dpreekgreeks, from the egyptians. of course, we got good information from the military that gave us a little information about how the airplane was descending and some of the motions of it. it surprises me that we didn't have any radar coverage or any coverage at all all the way to the water. you know, we don't have assets

exactly where the airplane hit the water. >> investigators will be looking for the black boxes as they always do when a plane goes down. we're getting reports this morning that the equipment needed to find the boxes hasn't even been sent to the area. could that be possible? >> it is, willie, because it's not something that is on station, you know, all over the world. they're acoustic beacons, or acoustic microphones. they're listening for these pings. but it's, again, we're in one of these points where they're searching a large area without any real pinpoint information. so trying to scour that area, of course, you know, there's a lot of things that will affect, you know, those pingers. if the wreckage is sitting on top of those boxes, it may dilute the signal, and they may not find it. there's a lot of ifs about it.

the fact that the equipment isn't on station yet doesn't really surprise me. they don't really know where the wreckage is at this point. >> greg, i have a few seconds but, of course, the reports about smoke alarms going off, the equipment on the airplane sending those about two, three minutes before the plane goes down, what do you make of it? >> the sequencing of that, savannah, will be critical. putting it together in a timeline with the air traffic control communication. it's obvious the last communication with the crew, those alarms started to go off in two minutes or less, right after that. so something dramatic was happening at that point. then the sequencing of when those alarms went off or the warnings went off, versus when they lost control of the airplane. the cockpit voice recorder can fill in some of the gaps. it's not going to be like where all we heard at the end of the cbr was the plablast. here, a crew will probably talk about issues.

better off. if you're not, at least you'll have somebody else to look down on. it is a dumb idea, and it will not work. >> to emphasize how unpopular hillary clinton and donald trump are, half the voters we polled said they would consider a third party in the presidential election. 47% tell our pollsters they would be open to voting for that third party option this november. savannah and willie? >> peter alexander in washington, thanks. let's go to steve kornacki. he'll dive into the new nbc news/wall street journal poll. take it away. >> we look at the bottom line numbers. a month ago, this is what the race looked like. hillary clinton, a double digit lead. then, we were hearing from democrats. trump is hillary's dream opponent. you had the never trump republicans saying, don't bother having the election if trump is the nominee. he can't win. a month later, check this out, we basically have a dead heat here. what is the difference when you look inside the numbers over the last month? right here, this is the biggest single difference. that is not it at all. i had to go back one.

this is the biggest difference. this is republican voters. a month ago, donald trump was trying to lock up the republican nomination. 72% of republican voters said they're with him against hillary clinton. still a lot of republicans were saying, i don't know if i can get on board. he locks up the nomination. the race becomes clear to them. the number of republicans supporting trump has jumped by 14 points in the last month. he brought republicans home. republicans are on board with him right now. if there's one silver lining in this for hillary clinton, it's this. that could still happen on the democratic side. these are bernie sanders supporters right now. 66% of them say, look, if it's not bernie, if it's hillary clinton as the democratic nominee, i can support her. that number n a healthy party in the fall, should be higher. that's the challenge for hillary clinton. can she get the bernie sanders number up into the 80s, the 90s? that could move the overall number up. that's her challenge right now. take a look at this. we mentioned this. the overwhelming vote, over 50%

negative scores. these are the two least popular nominees you'll see pitted against each other. strong support for hillary clinton with black voters, latinos, women, younger voters, double digit lead. on the flip side, donald trump 16 points up among whites, double digits for senior citizens. men leading among independents. when you add the groups together, you know what this looks like? mitt romney versus barack obama in 2012. almost identical. all the talk that donald trump was uniquely the worst republican you could ever put up, he'd lose in ways you'd never seen, he's getting exactly what mitt romney got. >> steve kornacki, come have a seat. we'll bring in nicolle wallace. let's talk about the numbers there. how much of the tightening of this race is donald trump bringing people around him? and how much is hillary clinton fighting a two-front war with bernie sanders in the race? >> steve summed it up nicely.

her mission is to bring along the sanders' voters, while trump's mission is to crush hillary clinton. uncle bernie refuses to go home to vermont. refuses to message to his supporters that it is over. he can no longer become the democratic nominee. it's news to them. they express dismay and disappointment and rage he should get out of the race. it's hillary clinton's largest problem. >> you feel strongly if hillary clinton loses in november, this will be the moment people should look at as consequential. >> should we convene in this exact group the morning after election day, and should hillary clinton have lost narrowly, it will have been because of the events of this month. it will be because long past the point when it was possible for bernie sanders to win, he stayed in, called her corrupt, called her unqualified. and independent voters, the people still up for grabs, were hearing the same message from donald trump as they were hearing from bernie sanders.

>> steve, how much of this is hand wringing in may, five and a half months ahead of the election? won't democrats eventually, given the choice between donald trump and hillary clinton, go for hillary clinton? >> there is a chance -- keep in mind what happened eight years ago. the hillary clinton and barack obama fight. hillary was saying in june, i'll be the nominee. i'm more electable. she talked about the kennedy assassination happening late in the '60s. it was ugly. as soon as the primary process ended, she didn't have the numbers, she dropped out and endorsed obama. we don't remember it being tumultuous because it worked out for democrats. >> you don't remember anything about that race, do you, nicolle? blocked it out. >> exactly. president obama is making history today, announcing the end of a decades of old arms embargo on vietnam. this is the first stop on a

needs to defend itself and removes and v s lasting images cold war. >> president obama will be the first u.s. president to visit hiroshima later in the week. this tornado was spotted along the oklahoma border. dylan says there is a threat of more tornadoes in the region today. a disturbing scene at a zoo in chile over the weekend that's getting a lot of attention. tamron that has that story. >> this is hard to believe. you may find some of these images disturbing. officials say a man deliberately jumped into the lion enclosure and started provoking the animals. they attacked, eventually leading zookeepers to shoot and kill the lions. officials say it was their only choice, but people are furious. >> reporter: shock and outrage saturday at the zoo in chile after officials say a 20-year-old man broke into the lion's den, took off his clothes

and taunted the big cats, causing them to attack. the images graphic, we have to blur them. zookeepers tried stopping the lions by spraying with water, then used a tranquilizer dart. when it didn't work, they shot the lions with a gun, killing them. the man who left behind a suicide note survived. the incident sparking protests and uproar on social media. the lions were not at fault, one person posted. they should not have been shot. another wrote, why kill them for his mistake? let him die, not the lions. the zoo expressed heartbreak at losing lions that had been there more than 20 years. the zoo's director defended their actions saying, if a person's life is at risk, we have to bring in the shooting team. the mission becomes to save the person's life. wildlife experts agree. >> a tranquilizer can take five, ten minutes to activate. they felt like they didn't have that kind of time, so they chose to use lethal force.

>> reporter: unfortunately, zoo patrons acting dangerously isn't new. columbus zoo, 2015, a man wearing a camera jumped the fence to pet a cougar, then posted his stunt online. bronx zoo, 2012, a man leaped off the monorail into the tiger exhibit and was mauled. 2009, this woman was attacked by a polar bear after diving into the pool during feeding time. earlier this month, tourists at yellowstone national park put this wild bison calf in their suv because they thought it was cold. officials later euthanized the calf because the herd wouldn't accept it back. >> you shouldn't come in contact with exotic animals. view them at a safe distance and enjoy. any time you uneducatingly try to interact, you may risk the lives of that wild animal. >> the zoo is holding a funeral for the two lions today. the man who was hauled is in

joe fryer has more on this story. good morning. >> savannah, good morning. after two years of disasters, this has been a busy year on mt. everest. the world's largest peak has proven dangerous as of late. this morning, a climber from india is the third to have died in as many days. two others are missing. about 30 more have developed frostbite or become sick near the summit. >> reporter: 29,000 feet above sea level, triumph and tragedy were separated by hours. two climbers died last week on the way down, apparently from altitude sickness. one had just reached the summit. >> you've been up for so long at that point, you've been pushing, you know. for most people, it's getting close to the limit of what they're capable of. >> reporter: one victim was maria, who taught finance at an australia university. >> she was superwoman. she could do anything, and she wanted to make her mom, dad and

family proud. >> reporter: she'd already scaled four other peaks. her mom flew to bid her farewell before this climbing, something she hasn't done before. >> i had a bad feeling and said, i had to go say good-bye. >> reporter: it also killed this man, after reaching the summit, his fourth attempt. the "washington post" profiled him. >> because he had failed attempts before, friends would say, maybe it's not your fate to climb everest. he'd say, no, i have a passion for this. i want to keep going. >> reporter: he narrowly survived last year when an earthquake in nepal triggered a deadly avalanche. after that, his descend was called off after guides were killed in another avalanche. this year brings a remember nan -- renaissance, with 330 climbers reaching the summit. that includes a veteran who lost

actually took rob and a bunch of the people doing that work into orc camp. they basically had to learn a vo k -- vocabulary of movement. >> did you sleep in cabins? >> it's different from that camp. we characters are between seven and eight feet tall, 500 to 700 pounds. they're big guys and you had to move differently. we had to have a uniform way of moving and then add your own you nance -- nuances. it was a voyage of discovery. >> this is based off the game. >> it is? >> a lot of people are obsessed with it. >> "world of warcraft," i'll tell you about it. that was my question, are you big gamers? >> we are. rob more so than i. >> yeah. i was a player of the game. i played it for 12 years. i used to play for 18 hours every day. >> whoa!

>> i was dedicated. for me, making this movie, it's kind of very much full circle. being in this movie means that, you know, spending ten years of my life and 18 hours a day on something is cool. >> research. >> you were just preparing for a role your entire life. duncan, this is a little bittersweet for you. this moment, a huge day for you as the movie comes out, but also losing your father, david, in january. i understand he got a chance to see some of the movie before he passed. >> he did. this has been an amazing opportunity and a crazy experience. my wife had cancer, and we got through it just before we started the movie. my dad passed away as we were reaching the end of the movie. my first child is coming next month. it's kind of a weird chapter in my life. >> how is the family doing? >> good. everyone is good. we're kind of moving with it and kind of getting used to the new life we've got. >> and the baby is coming any moment, right? >> yeah, probably on the red

burger. kenji, good morning and good to see you. >> morning. >> we have excited people at our tasting table. let's start with the ingredients. >> we have the sauce and burgers. thousand isles style. sugar, salt askand pepper. we have the potato rolls and ground beef. >> let's start with the sauce. >> we got the mayonnaise. this is homemade but you can use store bought. little ketchup. >> kind of the secret sauce, right? >> literally but not too secret. sugar. >> little sugar. >> vinegar, white vinegar. whisk that up. over here, we've got our really hot griddle going. you can do this in a stainless steel pan, too. the idea is we're going to smash the burgers. >> let's talk about that. it's controversial. everything i've been told is don't press down the burger patty. you're losing the juices. >> on a griddle, as long as the burger meat is cold and you

press it down at the beginning, you're not losing juices. >> do it at the beginning? >> yeah, so we maximize the surface area. this is really fast, by the way. 2-ounce patties here. two per burger. season them up with salt and pepper. >> these are little guys, but they turn out to be full-sized burgers? >> flip them over. >> how are we downstairs, guys. >> i'm enjoying every second of this. >> the flay rvor is great. >> $5 at home depot here. put two patties down, this far apa apart. >> can you use the back of a spatula? >> you can, but i like the trowel. give it a twist to get it off there and get it to stick to the griddle. >> there we go, okay. >> perfect. >> the idea is we're getting a ton of the browning reaction. when you get a seared steak,

alert traffic reporter jessica boyington is doing that for us. >> we're watching 95. a few spots where we're seeing slow downs. right now focusing right before highland avenue. gridlock traffic headed northbound from the delaware state line up to the blue route, 17 minute trip there, average speeds down into the 20s. big slow down headed northbound from delaware on 95. also watching some construction, broad street between 95 and oregon avenue and then be there until 4:00 p.m. today doctors and nurses from across philadelphia will announce their support for the mayor's tax on sugary drinks. they say it's the best way to reduce the risk of diabetes. he wants to add three cents an ounce tax to sugary drinks. distributors say the plan is bad for business. in south jersey ten families are out of their homes because of this fire in burlington county. the flames broke out just before midnight at the wood lane crossing apartments in edgewater park. no one was hurt.

first thing you want to do, we have the side of the house here. a lot of us, including at my house, you have the grill sort of against the house. get it out of the way. literally move it ten feet out. >> that far? >> is that the minimum? >> yes. flames can come out the back sometimes. they have caught homes on fire. you want it ten feet out. >> wow. >> next thing you want to do, make sure there are no gas leaks. do the soapy water test. come down to the -- see the propane tank? put the propane tank on. you want to spray the soapy water. soap and water in a thing here. >> what does it do? >> if it bubbles, you have a gas leak in the pipes. >> i've never done that. so smart. >> 15 seconds. you know if you have a leak. >> if you have a gas leak, don't use it. >> exactly. >> one other thing, too, what a lot of people do is they keep the lid closed while they ignite it. don't do that. the gas builds up. before you turn it on, you want to open the grill up, let the gas dissipate a little bit.

it's still enough to ignite but not enough to create a fire ball. >> i didn't know you could start it with the lid down. >> all you have to do is that. >> oh. >> open the lid. here's the thing that i do a lot, which turns out is 100% wrong. you start ignites it and doesn't go, so you keep doing it? don't do it. if it doesn't ignite the first try, walk away three to five minutes with the lid up, then try again. >> what's here? >> how long can you keep the food out without making your guests sick? according to the usda, you can have food out like this outside for two hours. >> really? with mayo in it? >> yes, all good. >> longer than i thought. >> if it's over 90 degrees, if it's over 90, it drops to one hour. >> sun, shade? >> sun or shade, anything. 90 degrees out or more, bring it in. otherwise, two hours. these things for a couple
