police, all sixth graders, at this baseball game, and they became, to start to feel sick, start to feel signs of some sorpt of heat-related illness. two of them at the game, and the rest of them started to feel sick once they got back to the school. let me show you video from skyforce10 so you can see what was happening here earlier today. around 1:00 today, the school says the students were coming back, and they started to feel these signs of heat related illness. they did not specify symptoms, but we know it includes headaches, nausea, and the school says 15 students were taken to area hospitals. and two from the game taken to capital health. they were going to get evaluated, possibly get treatment. this is what was happening at the game today. it was a very hot day today. this is video from the trenton

thunder game provided to us from the team. the general manager says it was 81 degrees at the game today. now, they do have emts at the games, but today, because it was so hot out there, they actually allowed people to bring water in with them, and, you know, back out live, staying hydrated, that is something that the school is really stressing as well. they put a statement on the website telling parents what happened today and reminding them to keep their children hydrated on very, very hot day, and we know that this is just the first day of what could be many more to come in the summer months. live, i'm lauren mayk, nbc 10 news. >> we have not felt the heat and humidity in months. it is a shock to the system for sure. >> winter to summer. the thermometer pushing 90 right now. let's go to the patio where gle

the heat himself. glen? >> if this was the middle of summer, it wouldn't be a bad day. temperatures near 90, humidity low, the sky looks blue considering how hot it is, but days ago, it was in the six60s. this is a change. 89 in philadelphia 89 in lehigh valley, 88 in new jersey, delaware in the 80s. saturday, 62 degrees, sunday, 66. today the low 90s. tomorrow into the low 90s as well. and the pollutants are having an effect too. we have a code red for air quality related to ground level ozone, and ozone affects people with respiratory problems, especially that sunshine interacting with pollutants to create this ozone, and anybody

out there, and people are in the water there? holiday weekend starts with warmer weather than usual. shore businesses say they couldn't ask for a better forecast. >> ted greenberg is in bentner. >> reporter: memorial day weekend in ocean city is extra long this year for lisa and her friend. a fantastic forecast drove them to the coast earlier than they originally planned. >> we probably would have headed down thursday or friday, so we left tuesday and enjoying every minute. >> reporter: many of the folks we found on the boardwalk and beach today also adjusted their schedules at the last minute. >> we saw the weather was going to be good, so we decided to make plans to be here for wednesday and thursday. >> was able to get off work for a few days, and me and my sister hopped in the car and came down here. >> reporter: in wildwood, people in two wheels and four hit the trails early. >> wow, beautiful.

leaving the scene. police tracked down the car owner, but they don't think that person was driving the car at the time of the accident. earlier today, skyforce10 was over bethlehem as crews battled a house fire. this was the scene on 8th street. three homes damaged. trying to find out if anyone was hurt. also, it's unclear yet what started this fire. big story today in decision 016, trump reach the number of delegates needed to clench the republican nomination for president. new unbound delegates in pennsylvania, colorado, and north dakota put trump over the 1237 mark needed to win, and the rise to the nomination was surprise and concern for foreign leaders. that's what president obama said today in a g7 summit in japan. he says the world is rattled by trump and says they have good reason to feel that way. >> a lot of the proposals that he's made display either

here's a live look at the airport on this thursday afternoon. airport officials say they are working with the tsa and airlines to ensure security lines move more efficiently. long lines in airports across the country caused thousands of pmgs to miss flights before the busy travel season. the tsa announced they are adding 768 new screeners by mid-june. in the meantime, travellers are to sign up for the tsa pre-check program after paying $85 and getting a background check, go through screening in a special lane. airline and airport leaders testified before the house transportation security sub committee today. they blamed extensive agent training and short staff at tsa for the recent problems. a u.s. senator takes the witness stand in the corruption trial of fattah today. senator bob casey says he received a letter from fattah asked a lobbyist be considered

for ambassadorship. the pennsylvania senator says he did not promote the bid to the white house, and the lobbyist seemed frustrated when it did not happen. prosecutors accuse fattah to accepting bribes and using nonprofit funds to resolve his money problems. trying to keep the shore resort afloat, new jersey lawmakers advanced a number of billing to help atlantic city from running out of cash. today, the democrat-led assembly passed measures giving the ac's government five months to devise a plan to balance the budget. the senate takes up the measure next. governor chris christie said he will decide quickly whether to sign or veto the legislation. this deal, by the way, eliminates the threat of a state takeover for now. more news from new jersey lawmakers. they are now two steps closer to making beaches and parks smoke free. this afternoon, the assembly and senate gave final approval to the bill. governor christie vetoed a similar plan in the last

legislative session although had it bipartisan support. the exempts golf courses. it permits local and county officials to set aside 15% of a park or beach as a smoking section if they choose to do so. new video of hungry thieves stealing more than $50,000 in seafood. police say six men broke into e frank hopkins food market in south philadelphia. they cut the lock there, and after they get in, boy, piled up seafood, loaded them into an suv, and then took off. a cape may county community has a visible police scene after a crime that shocked a lot of people there. the middle township opened a new station, and it's the township's latest bid to address the rise in crime ratings. in december of last year, this 15-year-old was murdered, and police found her body in the basement of a vacant home two

weeks after disappearing. the new police station is less than a mile from that crime scene. >> we believe this location will result in residesidents and viss taking advantage of the police department and increase interactions between the public and our officers. >> the new police substation will be open around the clock. developers hope to pave the way for job growth by repaving a busy road in camden. between vesper boulevard and white horse park, gets a new street with bike lanes and sidewalks. they say the road is redesigned needed to help support a business boom from companies like subaru and the 76ers. >> as a lifelong resident, it's truly an exciting time and projects like this that opens the door to camden literally and

figuratively. >> construction should be finished january of next year. several dozen people became u.s. citizens in our area today with a piece of american history providing the backdrop. 48 people took the oath of citizenship at valley forge national historical park. eight are members of the military in honor of military appreciation month, and the new citizens come from 29 countries. for one ever them, there were two reasons to celebrate. >> a moment to remember for a very long time. i'm glad i was able to share it with my parents. my mother and i became nationalized today, both became citizens today. a very special moment. >> congratulations. today's ceremony one of 100 taking place in national parks this year to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the national park service. this memorial day weekend, if you're looking for something

there's, like, 25 of us, stay in a house down on bethany beach. this was the meeting spot. we meet here every year. >> reporter: this year, you'll find beaches smaller than last year. you remember the storms we had this winter that beat the heck out of the delaware beaches. a lot of hard work got them up and running. >> looking forward to having nice, quiet action, hopefully, and reasonable people. >> reporter: many are ready for the summer crowds. the team at dewey beach water sport got the wave runners in the water to test out for what will be a sunny and profitable summer that basically starts tomorrow. >> getting in the sun, knowing we have a good forecast for the upcoming weekend, it's great. great to see all the people come out. these towns turn on, you know, nay liven up, people everywhere. everyone's happy to be out. it's great to see the money start coming through after you spend a lot. >> tim furlong reporting there

for us. dewey beach, a lot of people on the sand didn't see too many in the water. >> not yet. cold for that, right, glen? >> well, it's cold for me, i'll tell ya that. the temperature is not even up to 60 degrees in the ocean, and it's got to get a lot warmer than that before i step foot in there. that also has an impact on the temperature because when the wind comes in off the cooler ocean, it cools off the land, and that's starting to happen now. philadelphia's at 89, lehigh valley at 89 degrees. look at delaware to see how the winds are affecting this. newark is 90, harmony hills 991. 90 in middleton. millsboro at 89. look at the beaches. dewey beach, 67, bethany 70 degreesme ment degrees. wind direction is crucial.

a south wind, and those beaches are warm as inland. that's the critical part of the forecast. we have air quality alert for much of the area. that includes tomorrow. it's a code red for philadelphia. indicating that the low level ozone, that you can't see, is going to be very high. the sunshine interacts with the pollutants and code red means it's unhealthy for the general population. avoid strenuous outdoor activity especially in the peak heating times of the day. that's tomorrow. for memorial day weekend, it's looking pretty good. hot. e especially on saturday. 93 in philadelphia, 92 in the pa suburbs. 91? south jersey. jersey shore close to 80 degrees. that should be a nice day at the shore. not as warm on sunday, a little bit earlier sea breeze keeps the temperatures down a bit, and

monday, the greatest amount of clouds, lowest temperatures, and the best chance of rain. that's generally the case throughout the area. you can see even the pa suburbs, 79 degrees, may have trouble reaching 80 degrees in any part of the area by memorial day itself. as far as the holiday is concerned, overall, it's looking pretty good. now, we're dry until you look back to state college, and middle of pennsylvania, that activity does not look like it's moving eastward very quickly, but it may be enough to affect some of the northern and western areas. this, of course, is more significant out by cincinnati. there's a little bit more moisture headed our way as we head into tomorrow, and the best chance of any kind of showers further north and west you get from philadelphia, so here we go tomorrow afternoon, and you can see some of those showers coming across lehigh valley, burkes

county, upper bucks. delaware is dry, even philadelphia probably staying dry during the day tomorrow. now, will it stay dry all weekend? not really. we've got 88 degrees on sunday. generally dry. we could see showers sunday night. monday, that's the cloudiest day, best chance of seeing any rain, and then temperatures jump up tuesday. next week is not as hot because we're going to get more of an east wind for most of the week. don't think this 90 degree stuff is going to last indefinitely. >> never, glen. we never think that so early in the season, but nice to feel the warmth out there. >> it is. i don't mind it. >> as it heats up, so does the competition to be part of a hit tv show. >> it's going down tonight in philadelphia. athletes lining up right now to wait for the chance to prove they can be an "american ninja

you have to see this 7-year-old boy in the blue shirt. his mom says he's tough. watch what he does confronted by two armed thieves in maryland. look at this. the boy gets in several punches when one of the robbers tries to grab hip. the thieves made off with cash, but not that young man. and the boy's points say they hope police catch them to give their son peace of mine. >> this is a selfie that is safe to say no motherments to see. a teacher in utah on leave after a student sent this photo to his mom. yep, that's duct tape on the mouth. the teacher told him to put it there because he was talking too much in class. the mother is not looking to get the teacher fired, but make sure it does not happen again. >> oh, boy. a police chase in texas ended with officers rescuing a six week old infant unbuckled in the backseat. the officers started following the driver after he threw beer bottles in park bushes, and

following from kent county delaware. >> deadly crash as we told you snarled traffic on delaware route 1 north of dover. ted furlong has the latest. what have you dpoufound out? >> caller: it's a mess, fatal accident on delaware route 1, for those who don't know, is not u.s. 1 that a lot of people think about. this goes north and south in the state of delaware. it's a major artery, a toll road from the beaches and back. tomorrow at this time, this road

will be a popular road, but right now, both lanes in both directions are closed in the area of dover, basically near route 104 where you would exit 104 to get off to go to the speedway or state capital in delaware. i talked to a friend on the phone, it's a mess, a large stretch with no vehicles. some got off of the road, but here's the problem. before this was built in the 1990s, this is a slower road, running parallel. a lot of people are trying to jump off that right now to get on to route 13, and they are, of course, jamming up that road. it's tough. now, also people might remember the signs that used to say switch to 9 saves time. that's route 9. it's slower, scenic and pretty road, east of delaware 1 running north and south as well. right now, there are spots even on that road where there are traffic jams.

talking to the state police and del dot for information, seeing where the slowdowns are, there's spots on those roads where a lot of traffic lights issue and route 9, a lot of windy road. all the traffic that would be on route 1 is trying to get on those roads, and now those are clogged as well. i wish i had advice for you. sit and wait it out? i tried to get an answer for an estimated time for the road to reopen. at this point, i have not got information. they are working on it, investigating the crash. one person was kill in the crash, and other people were injured as well. we'll try to get more information. stay away from delaware 1, south of middleton into the dover area and north and south, certainly, camden, wyoming, not a good time to get on delaware route 1. i'll fry to get more information. when i get it, i'll bring it to you. >> tim, as we saw the video from skyforce, we mentioned the fatality and there was another

in fact, organizers and people who created this summer fest call this the urban beach front. now, employees are on scene on hand here putting finishing touches on everything ahead of tonight's preview. gates open at 5:30, but it's only for a select number of invited guests. we wanted to give you all a sneak peek inside. go ahead in, take a look, everything transformed for the warmer weather. the ice rink is now a roller skating rink where you can bring or rent roller skates or blades. they have the fire pits in the winter is now the site of a nine-hole miniature golf with a hole designed by a philadelphia artist, and when it gets too hot, get ice cream or go inside the air-condition, chicky and pete's, only crab shack. the goal is to make the water front a destination for the whole family for the entire year. the entire river rink opens

officially tomorrow. who is kicking off the celebration? lack in 30 minutes. nbc 10 news. sure has heated up this week. a lot of sunshine, temperature up close to 90 degrees in philadelphia and new jersey, lehigh valley, delaware, everywhere. other than at the beaches as we head to the shores. ocean temperatures at 57 degrees. you get a wind off of that. atlantic city's only 71 degrees. 88 in mays landing, up to 90 earlier. you can see the effect of the sea breeze, just in a matter of miles, summer point 74 degrees. that's the impact of the neighborhood forecast, and only predicted temperatures in the

70s today, same tomorrow. it's a hot holiday, except for memorial day itself. there we are. starting off at saturday, generally dry, but hot, kind of humid, too. south jersey 91, and inland areas, 79 degrees at the shore. that's still a beautiful day at the shore. sunday still nice, but not real warm. keep that in mind. cool on monday, 66 degrees with a lot of clouds and the best chance of showers, although it's not a total wash out any of those days. and as we go into the night tonight, we see that there are a few little showers in central pennsylvania, may not make it in, even into northern and western areas, but we could see a little bit later tomorrow afternoon, so that's why i have an afternoon shower or storm in some of the northern and western suburbs, pa suburbs 90. 90 with a thunderstorm in

right now at 5:00, breaking news, a deadly crash north of dover. it's creating major backups for drivers headed to the delaware beaches. at least three cars collided on delaware route 1. right near route 42 before 2:00 this afternoon. we learned at least one person died in the crash. >> the crash has all lanes block on delaware route 1. at one point, the backup was 18 miles long. state police say to avoid the area because it could be closed off for a few more hours, and
