nbc 10 monitors breaking news and brings you updates as soon as you get them. talk about why everyone's going down to the beaches right now. first alert weather, this week marks the up official start of summer, but today, it felt like full blown summer outside. the thermometer pushing 90 in many areas, and many folks have the right idea sitting in the shade enjoying lunch in wilmington. >> the sun so strong, people use umbrellas to shield themselves from the rays. the heat did noz bother these folks, though, biking and walking. >> we hope the weather stays this way. wouldn't it be nice? let's get an update. >> glen "hurricane" schwartz is live outside on the nbc 10 patio. hey, glen. >> yeah, rosemary, it's going to stay hot for the week, but not the entire weekend. by memorial weekend, things cool

down a good bit, more clouds around and rain. not quite as sunny and p hot as what we're seeing now. we have warm to hot conditions throughout the area. 89 in the lehigh valley, 88 in philadelphia, and some of the sea breezes if delaware and at the jersey shore. we've seen incredible temperature jump over the past week, and remember back saturday it was 62 for the high, sunday, 66, and today headed to 91 degrees, the official number out in a half hour. tomorrow will be at least as hot as today. when you get this stagnant air and heat, that tends to combine to produce low level ozone, and the air quality is code red for today and tomorrow as that sunshine interacts with the pollutants in the air and creates ozone and really has an impact on people with respiratory problems and even the general population should

avoid strenuous activity during the heat of the day tomorrow. you can see the closest showers are far out to the west. they are not much of a threat in the night tonight and tomorrow morning. the temperatures will not be as low because the humidity is up. that's one of the changs we'll see over the weekend. more about when that rain comes in with the rest of the forecast in a few minutes. holiday weekend destinations, talking about the weather, of course, and look at this live camera here, that's at vine street, and traffic, of course, heavy at this hour, 5:02. live look, and there are some cars headed down the shore, but traffic looks like it's moving along just fine. a live look at i-95. in wilmington, as you can see, as soon as we switch the camera, we can show you the traffic is moving fine there. that's just above the stadium.

the rest of them here. let me show you the view from skyforce10 over the school today. emergency crews on scene here around 1:00 as the students started to feel sick. the district tells us 15 students in all taken to hospitals, and i spoke to one student on the trip about what happened when they returned here to school. >> they gave us lots of water and cups and told us to keep refilling the cups, and with had to have at least three cups. >> reporter: when you got back to school? >> yeah. >> reporter: yeah. that was the school trying to care for those students. we have video from that trenton thunder baseball game that happened today. the team provided video for us. it was hot there. the general manager telling us 81 degrees there at the stadium today. now, they have emts at all of their home games, and today, because it was so hot, they actually allowed people to bring

in water with them. now, back here at the school, water also something that they stress here. the principal telling students to bring in their own water bottles and fill them up all day, and today, they posted a note on the district's website saying what happened and reminding them to keep kids hydrated on these hot days. lauren mayk, nbc 10 news. >> thank you, lauren. new information now on the hill-and-run crash caught on camera yesterday in norristown. you see a boy riding the bike out of the alley towards oakwood avenue and collide with a white sedan. the driver then takes off. today, we learn that the boy is out of the hospital and that police have tracked down the car's owner, but they don't think that person was drivingment car at the time of the accident. philadelphia detectives are looking for the driver who crashed into a jogger and then kept going. this video shows the suspect's car, a late 1990-2000 dark

ahead of the holiday weekend, casting votes on several bills, the state assembly and senate approved a measure to ban smoking in public beaches and parks, but they allow towns to set up 15% of a beach or park specifically for smoking, and that does not apply to parking lots adjacent to the public parks or beaches. the bill heads to christie's desk who vetoed a similar bill in 2014. another measure gives the city's government up to five months to devise a plan to balance its budget. governor christie said he will decide quickly whether to sign or veto the legislation. the deal eliminates the threat of a state takeover for now. the new jersey assembly passed legislation raising the state's minimum wage to $15 an hour for five years. the bill goes to the senate.

it would raise it to $10, and it calls for waging by $1.25 a year or dollar-plus adjustment for inflation, whichever is greater. the biggest health concern this summer could be buzzing around us. on the lookout for zika carrying mosquitos since the winter. scientists encourage students to get involved. around the country, students are asked to work with local control teams to collect egg samples. they are sent to the invasive mosquito project. >> once you have the disease, invasive mosquitos in the area, it's already too late. >> the information will be sent to the u.s. department of agricultural of scientists who want to create an updated map of mosquito activity. all right. talking about the weather now. everybody loving it. clear skies, warm out there, but we'll take it considering it felt like winter until

all-important holiday weekend forecast. >> all right, checking in with chief meteorologist glen "hurricane" swartsz. glen? >> if you like today, you'll like the nec couple days as well, but it's not going to stay like in all the way through the weekend. it's unseasonably warm, more like a 4th of july weekend than memorial day weekend. 89 in lehigh valley, the partest place from the ocean, and this kind of weather pattern, closer to the ocean, cooler it is. ocean's 57 degrees, so there's the shop shore wind, an atlantic city is 70 and 88 in woodbine, and, of course, even warmer further inland. we do have an air quality alert. the heat that builds up has an impact on this, and we're going to be seeing that issue over the next couple of days. we have a code red that is in effect for the city because of

giving it the best shot, but competition is tough. >> very tough. nine local contestants competing in the spelling bee are out. three contestants last of the locals still standing eliminated today, but cop grats to going and getting far. 284 spellers came to maryland this week to compete after seven grueling rounds, only ten remain. we introduced you to her yesterday, from delaware county. she shared with us what the experience was like after it was over. >> i was a little nervous because, like, i might not know the words, but then i was -- i was also having a good time because it's nice -- i was on tv, and it's nice to be in the spotlight. and all my friends were watching at home. >> the finalists, some as young as 1, compete for $45,000 in cash and prizes. the championship finals air live on espn tonight.

all lanes blocked right now, and at one point, the backup was 18 miles long, and as we told you a half hour ago, state police say to avoid the area because it could be closed for a few more hours. following more breaking traffic news out of chester county. a car fire has been halted along route 30 east in downingtown. fortunately, no one's hurt, but you can see here from the traffic camera, all eastbound lanes of route 30 are closed. expect delays if you are headed in that direction. okay. now to the first alert weather. some folks getting an early start to the memorial day weekend, and they couldn't ask for better temperatures. look at the time lapse video. it's 88 degrees. don't head to the beach to have fun this week, here's a live look. the blue cross river rink.

it's transformed for the summer, and they are enjoying a sneak peek today. >> we are giving a sneak peek of the holiday weekend forecast, and we are live on the nbc 10 patio, glen? >> well, this time of the year, we can get nasty memorial day weekends, but this one is more like summer time, which is the beginning of, unofficially. people are enjoying the heat. it's 89 degrees in the lehigh valley, that's the hottest spot, and 88 towards the beaches, and look at a close view of burkes county and lehigh valley. and that is one of the hot spots there. this warming trend continues, started on sunday after 62 degrees saturday and it's gotten hotter every single day.

everything else you love, the food, the walks, it's ready to go. a great summer for people who come for the fun and for folks like frank who want to rent bikes. >> high season is, you know, july and august, and as long as we get good weather from memorial day until labor day, we're happy. >> referee: certainly happy today. the state's done a great job getting the beaches back. in rough shape in january and february after the storms. dog fish head is doubling the size of the pub, and there's a new city hall. good news this year, the meters change to the park mobile app, and, yes, this year, they take credit cards. what i learned is every single camp site, cabin, and every state park in the state of delaware are booked this weekend. that never, ever happens. that's how big delaware tourism is getting. seeing that forecast, we have to get out there in delaware. tim furlong, nbc 10 news.

this weekend is one of the busiest of the year in airports around the country meaning long tsa lines that we've been talking about for weeks could be even worse. officials at philadelphia international tell us that airlines have hired extra staff to help passengers review carry on rules and inform them about wait times at check points, but maybe the best way to save yourself time at the airport this weekend and really all summer long is to sign up for one of those tsa pre-checks. >> that's right. our national correspondent put that to the test, live in new york city, jeff, good to see you. so how much faster -- >> good to see you too. >> how much faster is it compared to the regular security line?

>> reporter: it was quite a bit faster, but there's a lot of confusion how you sign up for tsa pre-check, what is it, what do you get? we'll get into that tonight on "nightly news" and issues with pre-check as well because the tsa says it's the solution. they moved so much staff from the regular lines to the pre-check lines, but not enough people sign up, so you have tsa agents who are sitting there with nothing to do white the regular line backs up. if you don't want pre-check, we have other solutions tonight about how to beat the line including free apps and a private company getting into the mix that it may give tsa pre-check a run for its money. you don't have to have a lengthy approval process and wait weeks. they do it at the airport on the spot and escort you to the front of the line to the metal detectors. so we have solutions how to beat lines tonight just in the nick of time for your holiday weekend tonight on "nightly news." >> all right, jeff, looking for your report later on this

. well, it's official. hit our first 90 degree day of this season in philadelphia. right now, it's 88 degrees. it's 89 in lehigh valley, comer towards the beaches both in delaware and at the jersey shore. the delaware affected by this southeast wind, of course, northern part of the state gets less of an impact, so mar90 in

middletown. it's been plenty hot there. 88 in millsboro, but look at the beaches, yeah. 71 in bethany beach, and 67 at dewey beach. winds from the cool ocean. as soon as the wind comes from the southwest, it'll be close to 90 degrees at those delaware beaches in the next couple days. it's going to be a hot holiday, and most of the area with the one exception being memorial day itself. so saturday and sunday, saturday looks to be the hottest day. 93 in philadelphia. jersey shore at 79 to 80 degrees. that's just picture perfect. sunday looks dry as well, but more of an east wind, keeping the temperature down, 66 degrees on monday with clouds and more of the east wind, lower temperatures, and delaware, that's the story at the beaches as well. it's going to be much, much

nicer and warmer saturday and sunday at the delaware beaches than it will on monday, so keep in mind those exceptions. we have sunny skies from philadelphia south and east, but one or two little light showers coming in to burkes county right now. getting close to reading. very, very light. moving pretty quickly. futurecast shows that there may be some of this activity as we go through the late evening hours and burkes, lehigh, hamptop county, upper bucks and upper montgomery, and then things quiet down towards the morning hours, and in the afternoon tomorrow, we could see more of those isolated showers developing, and you'll see that in the forecast for the neighborhoods. now, most of the philadelphia neighborhoods i think stay dry. fox chase at 91, winfield at 90, but chester, bucks, montgomery, could see isolated thunderstorms late in the day.

newtown at 91 with less of a chance, lansdale has a better chance. 90 in allentown with afternoon showers and thunderstorms. again, kind of scattered around. into new jersey and delaware, you don't see thunderstorms, just dry weather, and the west chance of dry weather is actually at the shore. atlantic city at 78, and avalon at 75. sea breeze takes effect tomorrow. look at saturday. sunday is warm. could be showers by sunday night, but especially on monday. the wind comes in off the ocean, and keeps the temperature down a bit. that's average for this time of the year. it's not exactly a chilly day. tuesday, though, the temperature goes right back up. that's only temporary. we go back closer to average temperatures as we head through the rest of next week.

birthday? well, with birthday cards scattered around the exhibit from local kids, and a cake made out of his favorite treats. guests sang happy birthday to him, and speaking of animals, weather couldn't be better for the horse show and country fair. >> it marks a milestone for the show, now its 120th year. >> reporter: without missing a step, the horse show is back to the dlited spectators eager to soak in the sun and take in the sights. >> we have people coming to the horse show from all over the united states. from california, arizona, texas. i was talking to them a few minutes ago, florida, and even out into cap canada. >> reporter: mother nature went above and beyond for the start of the show this year, but many out of towners were not expecting this summer-like weather this soon. >> it's really hot, getting hotter and hotter and hotter. >> horses go better in the heat

again, we're just not used to the heat yet. >> absolutely. remember less than a week ago, the high was 62 degrees. we had all of that rain, so our bodies have not had a chance to react to this and adapt to the heat of the summer. so that's why it feels hotter than it is. 88 in philadelphia now. we have hit 90. much of new jersey in the upper 80s. lehigh valley in the 80s, cooler in southern delaware and jersey shore because of the wind from the ocean. look at temperature rise since last weekend, and it's going up every day. today's it 90. tomorrow may go up again too a couple degrees. and the sunshine has helped produce ozone issue, air quality alert for code red today and tomorrow. that's something you can't see in the atmosphere, but the sunshine interacts with the pollutants and creates that, and it's bad for people with respiratory proble s
