and flooding. interstate 95 submerged, south of charleston. authorities shut it down after too many drivers tried to go through it. flood waters submerged homes. in myrtle beach, some rip currents had vacationers concerned to go in the water. >> i get nervous when my kids get further than their knees. >> reporter: rescuers are still searching for a 21-year-old man who went missing in north carolina late saturday after swimming in rough water. in texas, it was another round of flash flooding. several communities calling mandatory evacuations. >> we knew it was coming, but at the same time, i mean, you don't prepare for something like this, to pack up your whole house. >> reporter: among the deaths in texas, a national guardsman, who posted this haunting image on facebook, as flood waters overcame his truck. writing, all i wanted to do was go home. in houston, the river is filling over its banks.

more than 2,000 inmates from several prisons moved to higher ground. an astronaut tweeting what the texas rivers looked like from the air. >> and the death toll in texas is now up to six, as some rivers are still over their banks. back here in myrtle beach, it looks like it's going to be a beautiful day on the beach. but there is still the concern up and down the coast here, north carolina, south carolina, about the possible impact of those rip currents. tamron and carson, back to you. >> thank you very much, janet. severe weather is far from over. dylan is in for al. what with we expect today? >> there's so much going on. we're going to start with a tropical depression now. these are the remnants of bonnie. it's going to continue to move up the coast. as it does, we have the moisture streaming in off the atlantic here. we're going to continue to see pockets of heavier rain this morning. a cold front will slide this all to the east. we'll see improvements later

this afternoon. then as you get daytime heating and an approaching cold front, we're going to see pop-up showers and storms. rain this morning, then a break, then more storms developing later on today, as this cold front continues to move. tuesday, this will push most of the rain through the carolinas. spotty showers and storms but enough to produce two to three inches of rain. in the new york area, we could see an inch of rain. most is already on the ground. parts of texas, where we are going to see another round of storms develop this week. today's main focus is going to be across the northern plains. the cold front combining with the warm, humid air mass will trigger storms today across the northern plains. stormy down through texas. today, we're looking at the best chance of storms through north dakota and nebraska, where we could see large hail as the biggest threat. >> ruin some barbecues today. >> dylan, thank you very much. to the presidential race now. donald trump is making headlines over controversial comments at an annual event for veterans in washington, d.c. while a top supporter of hillary

clinton is calling on bernie sanders to end his white house run. kristen welker is in new york. good morning. >> good morning to you. weather permitting, hillary clinton is expected to march in the annual memorial day parade, where she has a home. donald trump is off the campaign trail, but he spent part of the holiday weekend courting veterans. all this as speculation swirls about a possible third-party candidate entering the race. >> reporter: donald trump rolled into the annual rolling thunder event, honoring prisoners of war. >> look, memorial day, so important. it's our day, and we have to be very proud of it. we are very proud of it. >> reporter: trump, who did not serve in the military, arguing he'd be better for veterans than hillary clinton. making this claim about undocumented immigrants. >> legal immigrants are taken

ballot access in all 50 states. they nominated their ticket over the weekend. you have two former republican governors. gary johnson, new mexico. bill weld, massachusetts. this is the most credible third-party libertarian ticket we've ever seen. there is already a threat to trump. >> this judge deciding documents related to the trump university will be released. trump has run as a businessman of great success. could this turn out to be a bad week, depending on the documents? >> that's the thing, which you always have to say, every new revelation, every new statement, boy, it never seems to stop him. however, the trump university thing, i think there is an aspect to the story that's more understandable to people. more relatable to people. what he's accused of here, it really looks like -- at least what he's accused of -- could be seen as a con job against ordinary people. i think it's more understandable than some of the other things democrats have gone after. some of the other business vulnerabilities. i think it's probably why you

saw that preemptive strike that trump is launching into. >> on the democratic side, we saw in kristen's piece, feinstein asking bernie sanders to step out. is he doing lasting damage to hillary? >> i don't think we're at that point. think back eight years ago, memorial day weekend in the clinton-obama race. hillary clinton was saying, i'm in until the convention. barack obama's people were saying, it'll hurt the party long term. they finished up the primary season, she knew the math and got out of the race. if bernie sanders does that in the next couple weeks, it leaves us where we were eight years ago. does he push farther? if he were to win california, it could make him push to the convention. then you might be having that conversation. >> steve kornacki, thanks so much. this morning, investigators in houston are trying to piece together what set off a deadly shooting rampage. gabe gutierrez has the latest. >> good morning. this west houston neighborhood is quiet this morning.

a far cry from the terrifying scene that erupted on sunday. this gas station catching fire. bullets flying everywhere. frightened residents diving for cover. >> reporter: this upscale houston neighborhood is reeling this morning as investigators try to find out what led to a deadly shooting rampage. >> we don't know if he was out to target law enforcement, if he was going to shoot people randomly. i would say an attack on both is probably fair to say. [ gunshots ]. >> reporter: the chaos broke out sunday morning. >> we have an active shooter situation going on here. >> reporter: as a man with an assault rifle and a handgun opened fire. >> we barricaded ourselves in a back bedroom. we were even in a closet for a while. all we could hear were the helicopters and rapid gunfire. >> reporter: spray bullets likely setting off a blaze at this gas station. one man was killed getting his car washed. >> i saw a guy hunched over with the car still running and what

looked to be a gunshot wound to the neck. >> reporter: police met with gunfire as they raced to the scene. a helicopter and three squad cars hit. one nearly two dozen times. one deputy took several rounds in his bullet proof vest. another shot in the hand. >> one of my classmate's mom was shot in the leg. >> reporter: a swat team finally shot and killed the gunman. >> this is not behavior we expect to see over memorial day weekend in any area, especially in the united states. >> one of the other wounded men is being questioned as a possible second suspect. it's unclear what role, if any, he played. both officers have been treated and released from the hospital. no word on any motive. >> sad scene in houston. gabe, thank you very much. rain isn't the only concern for beach goers this memorial day. two shark attacks are being investigated. one in florida and the other in

southern california. where a two-mile stretch of beach is closed. nbc's steve patterson is there. good morning. >> tamron, good morning. it is the unofficial start to summer. the beach behind me should be packed. it's going to be shut down for at least another 24 hours after that possible shark attack. that follows hours after a confirmed bite, all the way across the country. >> reporter: fear on a florida beach. a boy just 13 years old bitten by a shark. >> hold on, sweetheart. >> reporter: his father kneeling by his side, as life guards treat the wound on his leg. a woman cradled him in her arms. he cries in pain. this is the devastation left behind. splotches of blood dotting a stretch of neptune beach. >> he was like, a shark bit my leg. go, go, go! >> reporter: the shark was between five and six feet long. not the only shark scare this memorial day weekend. >> happened so fast.

tweeted an independent third-party candidate would join the presidential race. a boy is recovering after being bitten by a shark on a florida beach. another possible shark attack in southern california led officials to close a two-mile stretch of beach there. now to a story that's got a lot of people talking. the controversial decision by zookeepers in cincinnati to use lethal force against a gorilla to save a 3-year-old boy who slipped into the animal's exhibit. nbc's blake mccoy has the latest. good morning. >> good morning to you. this morning here in cincinnati, zookeepers are defending their decision to kill the animal. there are growing calls for the parents to face neglect charges. the boy was injured but is okay. we do want to warn you, some may find this video hard to watch. >> reporter: cell phone video capturing the horrifying moment a 3-year-old boy came face-to-face with a 400-pound

gorilla, after falling into the enclosure at the cincinnati zoo. >> mommy loves you. i'm right here. >> reporter: visitors watched the gorilla pick the boy up and drag him through the water. >> oh, my gosh. >> you heard the splash, and people were yelling, "this is a boy in the water, a boy in the water." >> reporter: witness kim o'connor said the boy had been talking about wanting to go in the water. his mother was watching several other children when the boy slipped through the railing and wires to enter the enclosure. ten agonizing minutes go by before zookeepers made the difficult decision to shoot the endangered western lowland gorilla with a long rifle. >> great, big animal. it seemed very much, by our professional team, our dangerous animal response team, to be a life-threatening situation. so the choice was made to put down or shoot harambe. he's gone. >> reporter: they say a tranquilizer would have taken too long. on social media, people blamed

the child's mother. one writing, while i'm sorry a child was hurt, i'm angry that parental negligence called the death of this animal. protesters calling for justice. >> we don't have a voice. they gunned him down, so we have to be the voice. >> the mother should be held accountable. >> reporter: the family issued a statement saying we are so thankful to the lord that our child is safe. he is home and doing just fine. we extend our heartfelt thanks for the quick action by the cincinnati zoo staff. we know that this was a very difficult decision for them, and they are grieving the loss of their gorilla. the incident comes a week after zookeepers in santiago, chile, shot and killed two lions after mauling a man who jumped into their den, took off his clothes and taunted the animals. in cincinnati, the gorilla exhibit is temporarily closed. a memorial grows for harambe,

first woman president, accompanied by a first gentleman who, himself, is a former president, or the first political outsider, a businessman and reality tv star with a former model and entrepreneur as his first lady. even as a historic number of voters are unhappy about either choice. >> in the history of polling, we have never seen two candidates this unpopular. >> reporter: 34% of registered voters have a positive opinion of hillary clinton according to our new nbc news/wall street journal poll, and donald trump's rating is worse. 29% viewing him favorably. >> fascinating thing about donald trump is we've never seen a candidate with this high a negative, and he is the only person since bill clinton who rides to the nomination with more negative than a positive. >> reporter: when he swept into office eight years ago, barack obama was wildly popular. now, voters face two historic and very different choices.

text message be held responsible for an auto wreck, even if they're not in the car? >> the larger question here, like with alcohol, is how society wants to deal with behavior that might be okay in one place but becomes dangerous on the roads. >> reporter: the case centers on daniel, a retired chief and veteran killed in 2013, leaving behind his wife, mary lou. >> it's lonely. it's just the little things. >> reporter: his motorcycle was struck by a car driven by someone who was texting. >> he was a great husband, a great father, a good grandfather, the best. >> reporter: in criminal court, the driver who hit him pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and texting while driving. in civil court, the family is trying to send a message of their own, suing not just gargiulo but two others who were

texting her at the time of the crash. >> this is about making my dad's legacy to save lives. >> reporter: it's still early, but for now, a pennsylvania judge ruled the suit can proceed. he points to a new jersey case, where the court found the sender of a text message can potentially be liable if an accident is caused by texting, but only if the sender knew that the recipient would view the text while driving and thus be distracted. >> it's a very high bar. the person has to know they are texting with someone who is driving and continue to do it. >> reporter: the pennsylvania judge notes it's quite possible the two men may not have, in fact, known gargiulo was operating a motor vehicle at the time of the text messaging. one men argues there was no proof he knows she was driving, while the other attorney for the department said, even if we assume that he knew or should have noun she was driving, he did not encourage her to read the message. >> the galatins are well aware that at the end of the day, the

we have rain and storms moving through southeastern oklahoma and stretching down through austin. nothing see vevere right now, b the rain is reinforcing the flooding we've seen across most of texas. we are still seeing the rivers above flood stage. any additional rain will make matters worse. we have this cold front that'll move east. most of the storms today will be across the northern plains, up through the dakotas. on tuesday, it starts to shift farther into the southern plains. then we're going to see another round of storms through oklahoma and texas by the middle and end of the week. this is our zone to watch out for later this afternoon. they will not be widespread, but we could see isolated storms that produce large hail and damaging winds. those will be the biggest threats. we can't rule out a tornado. on tuesday, we're not looking at any widespread, severe storms, but we have a marginal risk of isolated, stronger storms from wisconsin, stretching to southwestern texas, and lightning will be the major concern with that one. something we'll keep an eye on

good morning. i'm lauren mayk. the weather could be changing some plans on this holiday. let's get the forecast froms 12340 first alert meteorologist bill henley. >> this is not what everybody is hoping for on memorial day. look at the steady rain at the shore and delaware beaches. this is streaming up, remnants of tropical storm bonnie with lots of moisture in the atmosphere. some will make its way inland. scattered showers is what we're looking at right now into the

philadelphia area and south jersey. gloucester, camden counties, salem counties seeing a few rain drops. north and west chance of some showers as we go through the day but not the steady rain and the shore and delaware beaches will see. thanks, bill. katy zachary is keeping an eye onto roads. how is it looking >> if we take a look at the shore this is the toll plaza onto garden state parkway in somers points. you can see the long line of traffic heeded northbound onto garden state parkway. a lot of people sadly this memorial day at the shore is a wash for so many are leaving the shore early. you do have traffic ahead of you if you're one of those leaving. there's a wash right at route 322 and kings highway. thanks. today memorial day we honor and remember those who died serving our country. in just a few minutes a wreath ceremony will be held aboard the battleship new jersey in camden followed by a naturalization
