matchup. let's start with kristen welker, at clinton campaign headquarters this morning in brooklyn, new york. >> good morning. we are learning secretary clinton is upending her campaign schedule to add extra events in california later on this week. a sign she is clearly concerned about losing the state and its 475 delegates that are up for grabs. secretary clinton spent her memorial day at a parade in chapaquoa, her adopted hometown. she'll get to california sooner than expected for a five-day campaign swing. sanders, who spent part of his moment mor memorial day at a golden state warriors game, has been in the state non-stop. he's been putting in resources to try and win california. the race is nearly out of sanders' reach, but last night, he was defiant.

>> we're trying to run a campaign here in california which, to the best of my knowledge, is unprecedented. we've spoken to 137,000 californians. by the time this campaign is over, that number will be well over 200,000 people from one end of the state to the other. >> polls show it is a tight race in california. secretary clinton leads, but only by two points. 46% to 44%. here's the reality check. secretary clinton will likely win the nomination, whether or not she wins california. barack obama lost california to clinton back in 2008. in this election cycle, a loss in the most populous state would give senator sanders more leverage heading into the convention and over the party's platform. it could leave her looking bruised heading into what will likely be a tough general

election battle with donald trump. trump expected to get specific today, talking about the money he said he raised for veterans on the campaign trail. hallie jackson is at trump tower in manhattan. good morning to you. >> good morning. trump will account for the donations at a news conference today at trump tower. to some, a test of his ability to keep the promises he's made. in the meanwhile, he's lashing out, preemppreemptively, at a pe third-party challenger. this morning, one of his rivals' protesters are making headlines. >> reporter: donald trump in the hot seat once again. this time, after a fundraiser for veterans earlier this year. now, questions about how much money was really raise and had where the cash really went. >> i said, let's do this. we're announcing on tuesday, all of the groups we put up this money and raise td this tremends amount of money. >> reporter: the nominee claiming he raised $6 million

for vets when he skipped a debate in january to hold a charity rally instead. promising to detail the donations today. still a mystery. another mystery, who might be considering a run as an independent challenger. conservative writer bill kristol dropping hints but telling nbc nothing is imminent. over sources particular with the recruiting process says an update could come in the next few days. mitt romney and paul ryan denying any rumors it could be them. >> i don't want to do the independent thing, but i do keep it and it is leverage. >> reporter: most analysts agree, a conservative challenger could peel away enough votes to hand the white house to the democrats this fall. meanwhile, one of the democratic rivals, bernie sanders, seeing a shuffle at his rally overnight. two secret service agents quick to shield the vermont senator

from animal rights protesters who hopped a barricade. other agents can be seen rushing the demonstrators. one using a baton to keep them away. with the crowd cheering, sanders continuing his rally less than a minute after the altercation. >> we don't get intimidated easily. >> and new this morning, our nbc news/surveymonkey online poll is revealing more about the divisions within both parties. registered voters, 38% predict the democrats will still be divided come november. republicans, the number is more than half. >> hallie, thank you very much. let's turn to nicolle wallace. good morning to you. >> good morning. >> let's start with the tweet from bill kristol, that there could be a third-party candidate, impressive and well-funded and thinking about getting in the race. does this seem realistic? who could it be? >> anything is possible. bill kristol is a smart guy. i don't see this happening, and

today. the weather-related death toll in texas is up to at least eight, after a 16-year-old boy was killed when a tree branch fell on him during the clean-up effort. >> reporter: this morning, texas is preparing for historic flooding. rivers expected to reach their highest levels in decades. overnight, authorities in austin recovered the body of a woman who drowned while tubing in the flood waters. >> it shows how dangerous the water can be right now. >> reporter: high water rescues were underway. >> we decided we were going to sit it out and it wasn't a good idea. >> reporter: while warden residents are refusing to follow the mandatory evacuation orders. >> you don't want to leave anymore. >> reporter: the water reached seven feet in some homes. >> i don't know what to say. right now, it's lev state ideva.

on that. >> according to reports, the main suspect who was killed by police was an army veteran. his family claims he suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder after returning from war. >> reporter: it happened over the memorial day weekend. a gunman with a high powered assault rifle, unleashing a hail of bullets on an unsuspecting houston community. when a swat team finally ended the onslaught, the shooter and another man were dead. at least six others, including several responding police officers, were wounded. while authorities have not officially revealed the gunman's name, our nbc affiliate in houston, citing local police sources, identified him as an army veteran who served two tours of duty in afghanistan. nbc news has not independently verified his identity. his father, who shares the same name, spoke to a reporter by phone, saying that while police have not officially confirmed the shooter is his son, he

believes it is very likely. suggesting his son was suffering mentally from his time at war. >> really believe this was a ptsd thing. >> reporter: he was honorably discharged from active duty in 2014. since then, his father says he has become disillusioned with the federal government. >> he was rambling off about the economy collapsing, you know. and that something was going to happen by monday. that kind of stuff. you know, there were signs. >> reporter: the chaos broke out sunday morning. >> we have an active shooting situation going on here. >> reporter: as he reportedly opened fire with an ar-15 style assault rifle and a handgun. one man, 56-year-old eugene, was killed while getting his car washed. investigators recovered a military-style backpack monday at the gas station.

police are hoping the backpack reportedly containing bullets, a birth certificate and several other items, will provide clues to what sparked the chaos that shattered a quiet suburban neighborhood. >> police are working to try to confirm whether the backpack belonged to the shooter. they're expected to release more information this afternoon. >> thank you. breaking news overnight. north korea's test launch of a mid-range missile failed again, according to south korean defense officials. the missile reportedly exploded at a mobile launch pad as soon as the button was pushed. if confirmed, it would make it the fourth failed missile launch by the north. surprising comments by former u.s. attorney general eric holder making news. he said edward snowden performed a public service by starting a debate about secret, domestic surveillance programs.

but he said snowden also caused harm and should be charged. he's in russia and faces u.s. charges that could land him in prison. a road rage situation in florida got out of control. the silver car suddenly takes a hard right turn and runs over the top of the motorcycle in the next lane, knocking the male and female passengers to the ground. the driver was later arrested and faces aggravated battery charges. the two people on the motorcycles had minor injuries. let's turn to sports now. the golden state warriors are headed back to the nba finals after knocking off the oklahoma city thunder in game seven of the western conference finals. the defending champs coming all the way back from a three games to one deficit to win that series. steph curry led the way for golden state. he had 36 points. the final score, 96-88. the warriors will face lebron james and the cavaliers in a

the hollowiday weekend. passengers were braced for long security lines but wait times weren't as bad as most airports. also this morning, new developments tied to the cincinnati zoo's decision to shoot and kill a 400-pound gorilla after a 3-year-old boy fell into the animal's exhibit. blake mccoy is at the zoo this morning. good morning to you. >> savannah, good morning. zoo officials here are on defense, defending their security measures, defending their decision to shoot this animal. while critics take aim at the child's mother, the zoo is refusing to place any blame. >> reporter: this morning, zookeepers point to the videos. >> oh, my gosh! >> reporter: they say it shows an agitated 400-pound gorilla putting a 3-year-old's life in danger after the child fell into its enclosure at the cincinnati zoo over the weekend. the zoo's director made the difficult call to shoot the animal. he says he'd make it again. >> we're talking about an animal with one hand that i've seen take a coconut and crunch it.

you can't take a chrisrisk with silverback gorilla. >> reporter: anger grows toward the child's mother. an online petition demanding she be charged with neglect. the mother responding on facebook. as a society, we're quick to judge how a parent could take their eyes off a child. if anyone knows me, i keep a tight watch on my kids. accidents happen. a subsequent statement thanked the zoo for their actions. the shows the enclosure. a metal railing with wires underneath, four feet of bushes and then a 15-foot drop into the mote. separating people from the habitat. that's where the boy fell? >> the barrier is safe. that said, any of us in this room could climb over barriers if we choose. >> reporter: this morning, the zookeeper who raised harambe the

goril gorilla. >> how intelligent he was, how inquisitive he was, how playful. he was a big boy. he grew up to be something else. he was very special. >> reporter: harambe was 1 of 11 western lowland gorillas at the cincinnati zoo. one of two silverback. the zoo had plans to use him in their successful breeding program. they refuse to second guess the decision to kill harambe. >> the people who worked there had a terrible decision to make. >> reporter: similar incident in chicago in 1996 saw a different outcome. in that case, a 3-year-old who also fell into an enclosure, was picked up and, to the awe of many, protected by a female gorilla. >> the mother in the 1996 case was not charged, and the mother in this case is not being charged either. police say there is no evidence of any crime. they're not even launching an investigation. while the mother's identity is not being disclosed this morning, we can tell you that she is an administrator at a

championship competition in fiji. 26-year-old eliminating some of the world's best surfers. >> i'm so happy. it feels really good. >> reporter: taking on wave after monster wave. making it all the way to the semi-finals, after entering the competition as a wild card. her breathtaking run, the latest triumph in a career that was nearly cut short when she was a young prodigy. in 2003, at the age of 13, hamilton went surfing off the coast of hawaii. a massive tiger shark attacked, biting down on her left arm. the teen did her best to stay calm and made it back to shore. at the time, describing the experience on "today." >> it happened so fast. there wasn't time to scream at the moment. then after that, i was focusing on getting to the beach. >> reporter: hamilton's arm was completely severed, but the horrific attack didn't stop her from returning to the water just weeks later. her love for surfing, she says, helping to conquer her fear.

"today" national investigative correspondent jeff rossen is here. what do you have against fun? what is the problem? >> i have so much. i let you enjoy the weekend. i could have done it on friday. now it's back to business. it's tuesday. summer is here and only getting hotter. i have to ruin matt's fun. kids can't wait to get into public pools to popular water parks. the cdc is out with new numbers, reporting thousands of them across the country. the pools had to be shut down because bacteria counts are off the charts. more people than ever getting sick. this morning, we're breaking out our germ kits again. before you jump in, you've got to see what we found. >> reporter: it's pool time. families across the country diving in. and hitting water parks. >> whoa!

love it. >> reporter: today, so am i. ever wonder what germs are lurking in the water? to find out, i'm going undercover, taking samples. >> got it. got it. >> reporter: sending them off to a certified lab. this time, it isn't just the visual dirt down under or clumps of hair floating on top. we're testing for the bacteria you can't see that can actually make you sick. >> ready to test. >> reporter: let's start at this public pool. >> got it. >> reporter: our test revealing something called enterococcai. simply put, fecal matter. maybe this water park will be better. >> now back to the lazy river. >> reporter: before i get too comfortable, the test reveals shocking results. total coliform. enterococci and e. coli. a perfect cocktail to make you sick. we found the same, disgusting

bacteria in these two pools, as well. yup, you're swimming in it. >> it means someone went to the bathroom and didn't clean themselves properly or actually went to the bathroom in the pool. >> reporter: we shared our results with an er doctor. >> i thought the chlorine and the chemicals they put in the pool kill the bacteria. >> it cleans some of it but not all of it. the heat in the pool allows the bacteria to thrive. >> it thrives best in a heated pool? >> exactly. >> reporter: it's about to get worse. both pools and, yes, even the lazy river, also contains pseudomonas. >> what are pseudomonas? >> they cause a rash and can get into your bloodstream, making you very sick. >> reporter: in fact, only one pool we tested came back completely clean. hang on, we found a different problem there. we pulled out our chlorine test strip. >> total chlorine is very high. on a scale of 0 to 10, it's a 10. three is ideal. it's way over.

details about how the proceeds from that event have been distributed. neighborhoods are under water this morning in parts of texas where heavy rain has some rivers reaching their highest levels in decades. mandatory evacuations are underway, and emergency crews are making high-water rescues across the state. at least nine deaths are blamed on the flooding. violent, spring storms also generated funnel clouds monday, causing damage. no injuries along the border between colorado and nebraska. doing it yourself can be a great way to save money, but sometimes, it's better to hire a pro. michael found that the bees plaguing his florida neighborhood had built a hive in his house. he got himself a beekeeper suit and started vacuuming up the bees with his shop vac. then the filter got clogged. he said it was a mistake. he had to be treated for 150 bee stings. he is going to be okay. a hard lesson learned there. it took a small herd of humans to save a baby elephant

we're back at 8:09. when you go grocery shopping, you probably check those sell by and use by and best by dates. don't you? >> the question is, what do they really mean? "today"'s sheinelle jones is here with a push to make things clearer. >> good morning. this year alone, americans will waste hundreds of billions of dollars worth of food. not because it went bad or spoiled, but the date stamps are confusing and misleading to consumers. >> reporter: when it comes to wasting food, america leads the way.

>> contrary to popular belief, the dates on food are not telling you the food is bad or it will make you sick. they're really just the manufacturer's best guess for when the product is at its freshest. >> reporter: this year, 90% of foods will end up in the trash once it hits the date on the package, wasting 160 billion pounds and costing the average family of four upwards of $1,500. now, congress is taking a crack at solving the problem. introducing the food date labeling act, to help consumers figure out the use by and sell by system that some argue is subjective and baseless. >> the reality is, the dates are not an exact science. every state has a different law. there's no uniformity or consistency across the country. this just adds to the confusion about these dates. >> reporter: the bill, if passed, will establish a uniform national date labeling system, that indicates whether the food is unsafe to eat and not just past the peek freshness. >> some products are fine for

weeks after the suggested date. archaeologists found honey in egyptian tombs that haven't spoiled. there are several things you can do to see whether the food is bad. assess the taste and smell. if there is mold, get rid of it. with vegetables, if they're wilted, throw them in an ice bath and, most of the time, they'll come back to life. >> reporter: the act, primarily based on recommendations from the natural resources defense council, harvard food law and policy clinic, and a quick fix to a growing problem. >> one of the solutions in the future for this is smart packaging. packages that monitor what's happening with the food. this bill is a great start to reduce waste. it'll help start a conversation around the fact we waste 40% of what we produce. >> if passed, the bill will make it easier for businesses and individuals to donate food to charities, helping fight the war against hunger. guys? >> sheinelle, thanks very much.

down. i've been to england, ireland, africa, china, japan, india. >> reporter: 11-year-old marley has been all over this world. >> i've been to medieval times, stuck in a tower, and i've had a dragon help me escape. >> reporter: and into several others. >> and out of space in a galaxy where i saved a lot of people on a mission. when i get lost in a book, it's just like magical, i guess. you can say it's magical. >> reporter: she read her first book at nine months old. >> everyone who walk sboed intos house or any place i was at had to read to me. >> reporter: it was her thing. >> we had to read that for book club. >> reporter: a year ago, marley noticed a tired theme in all her school books. >> all the books i was reading had white boys and dogs as the main character. i was sick of it. i'm sure my other classmates were, too, but i spoke up about it. >> she was like, i want black girls to be the main character.

everyone should read these. i said, how many books? a thousand books. okay. sure. >> there's your book. there's your book. >> reporter: marley's campaign, #a thousand black girl books, was born. her idea, collect a thousand books about black goals and donate them to libraries and schools in need. >> i want them to understand these voices matter and there's not just one experience that people can learn from. >> reporter: a lot of little people. >> welcome marley. >> reporter: and a few prominent big ones loved her message, too. and donations have been piling up. >> how many of yhave you collec? >> 7,000 books. >> do you feel you've reached your goal or is there more to do? >> there's more to do. i can do a lot more, and so can the people around me. >> reporter: last march, marley delivered over 1,600 books to her mother's former school in jamaica. her mom said she didn't read a book about a girl who looked like her until college. >> this issue, which we thought

was maybe a marley issue, this one little black girl thing, was everybody. >> do it together. these are heavy. >> yeah. >> reporter: she's become a local celebrity and book fairy for libraries and schools back home. >> courtesy of marley. >> she actually pointed to an issue that america doesn't have diverse books. >> we are about to read to 5-year-olds. >> yes. >> how do you explain your mission to them? >> imagine if the world -- people were only allowed to eat this one food. people had to eat this food every single day. then one day, you saw there was another food out there. what i'm doing is i'm bringing them to your school and making sure that you can eat them every day that you'd like to. it's fun wearing dresses that spin when i twirl. >> i love being a little girl. >> reporter: this summer, marley is partnering with the white house and the department of education to launch her own book tour, bringing diverse stories and the authors who wrote them to young readers across the

country. >> in addition to that, my fifth grade class in my school where i saw the problem, i added "one crazy summer" by garcia, and now it's a black girl book and one of the books they'll be reading next year and next year and next year. >> reporter: thanks to a little girl who read between the lines and took a stand. >> it's just me doing what i think is right. >> marley hopes other kids who don't feel represented will also speak out so that all races and religions will have a voice. in case you couldn't tell, marley gets her skills from her mom, who is awesome. grassroots organizer. this was her idea. >> incredible. >> she said, i wish that adults listened to kids more because we have some pretty creative ideas. they do. >> i'll say. she's changing the world. >> filling a need. >> it's important that all kids read about kids like them. >> how will you top that one tomorrow? >> it's pretty good tomorrow. >> is it? >> it is. >> i'll tell you this, this person tomorrow might be

we're back at 8:41. important information if you're in the market for a new home. there's a new mortgage taking the industry by storm. "today" financial editor gene ch -- jean chatzky is here with what you need to know. the quickie mortgage, what do we need to know? >> not exactly a new loan, it's a new process. it's largely automated, so it takes you a lot less time to get

the confirmation for the loan. people are doing it mostly online, although the phone is also possible. it takes ten minutes or less. the big players in the market, rocket mortgage, lenda, doing re-fies, and sofi. >> this is a good time to have financing locked in before you shop for a home. >> not only spring, but it's a seller's market. we're low on inventory, and it's making everything a little more competitive. if you can go to a seller and say, hey, i've already got financing, you're in much better shape. >> you said it's not a new mortgage, it's a new process of getting a mortgage. how exactly does that work? >> you go online. create an account. basically, you give it enough personal information about you so that it can reach out and get all your documentation. things like your birth date and your social security number and your bank account numbers. it goes out and pulls all that paperwork. if you've ever gotten a mortgage, you know that getting

all the paperwork, that's what takes the most time. this is where the secret sauce is. you get an initial offer, maybe they say, we'll give you 4% on a 30-year mortgage. then you can play around with it. maybe you want a 15 instead. you can play with the tool and figure out how much it'll cost you. >> there's got to be downsides. i think quickie mortgage, and i think, how quick do you want it to be? >> if you're thinking of the downsides, you don't have necessarily a local person to talk to. you can't walk into the bank and talk to a local person. you'll get a loan officer eventually, but the person may be across the country. the home inspection, the appraisal, those things still have to happen. you still need to close in person. there are some upsides, as well. >> what about putting the financial stuff online, having a third-party look at your social security, stuff like that? >> bank-level security. you don't want to be doing this on a public wi-fi. you do want to be careful. there could be people, you know, looking over your shoulder. it's very nice as far as accuracy is concerned. >> i did the debbie downer side

of things. give the upside. >> as far as accuracy is concerned, a mortgage can be a game of telephone. you send documents in, somebody loses them. everything is there so you don't worry about it. get a real quote in real time. it enables you to close faster which, in a seller's market, is an advantage. >> i was reading about this this morning. i think it's interesting. i have to say, i did think of the recession, the lending problems that went on. even the consumer financial protection bureau tweeted, when it comes to mortgages, take your time, ask questions and know before you owe. >> they did that after rocket mortgage put out a big ad during the super bowl. there was a flurry online. the way to think about this is it is one quote. this quickie mortgage is one quote. you still do your research and shop around. get that financing, but then go out and see what you can get from other lenders. talk to your local bank, local credit union. do a big search, and then lock into the best rate for you. >> jean chatzky, thank you very

reasons. obviously, the little boy is okay. no critical injuries. this gorilla, 17-pound -- 400-pound male who is 17 years old, harambe. the child, according to witnesses, told his mom that he wanted to go swimming. this is what has been reported. some point, the child slips either under or over, and there have been conflicting reports about that, as well. the zoo officials believe he went over something and fell 10 to 12 feet into the mote. harambe heard a splash. two female gorillas were immediately call sboed into thin area. he did not leave. then took the child for ten minutes. people were helpful for ten -- we've been on the show now eight minutes. two or three more minutes longer than what we've been on with you right now, that's how long the child was in there with the gorilla. >> we have video of the enclosu enclosure. >> where they believe the child

slipped through. this is -- there's vegetarian. the bottom line is, right now, despite what people have been saying online, there's a change.org petition, 200,000 people called on the mom to be charged. investigative authorities have not indicated it'll be the case. there's also questions about the cincinnati zoo. when your major clientele are children, making sure there's nothing, even if a parent turns their eye for a minute or two, that a 3-year-old can fit through. zoos around the world -- i worked at the ft. worth zoo for a second. they are held to a strong standard. they have people who come in and investigate. they do a lot of things to make sure these enclosures don't have this problem. there's a lot going on here. the family released a statement. they thanked god for the child's safety. i don't know. what do you think? >> harambe was shot, the gorilla. some people have questioned, well, couldn't they have tranquilized him? >> no. >> the zoo officials have said

they could not tranquilize. it would take time. >> would have agitated him. >> and been more aggressive with the child. >> we have the zoo director defending the decision to shoot marambe. >> we're talking about an animal with one hand that i've seen take a coconut and crunch it. you can't take a risk with a silverback gorilla. the barrier is safe. that same, any of us in this room could climb over bar yourr if we choose. >> they made the call. >> it was the correct call. it's easy for everybody to attack this mom. but nothing had happened like this before. >> right. >> you know, i've misplaced -- my kids have gotten away from me. you turn away. it happens. you try to be an attentive parent. sometimes, things happen. you know, for people to turn on this woman, i think, is -- >> that's what made me sad.

we don't read the comment sections. it's not healthy for many reasons. half the time, people write things they don't mean. but there was a viciousness i saw even in some of the headlines, directed at this mom. we have yet to hear what happened. you guys know, i always say, the fastest thing in the world is a 3-year-old boy or a gazelle. you have boys, as well. >> they have a way of being able to sneak around and hide and play hide and seek. they think they're playing, too. things happen. >> it's heartbreaking. >> as parents, it doesn't take much. you turn to another kid for 15 seconds, turn around and go, where'd they go? the reason this is a terrible story is because of what happened to the beautiful animal. we're happy the kid is okay, but it's heartbreaking. at the same token, dragging the mom through the mud isn't productive. >> doesn't help anybody at all. >> no. we've seen this happen at our plaza. people are there. there's a great star performing.

we can see tons of people holding their phones, video taping it, for the whole -- >> we do it. >> i like to take a few seconds. >> yeah. >> maybe a photo. take a look. adele was performing in verona, italy, sunday night. she calls out a concert goer for filming the entire show. ironically, the moment was caught on camera by someone else. here's what adele had to say. >> i want to tell that lady as well, can you stop filming me on the videocamera? i'm here in real life. enjoy it in real life. this isn't a dvd. it's a real show, and i'd like you to enjoy my show. >> so she had a tripod set up with a video camera. >> was she bootlegging it? >> obviously, this isn't just somebody taking out their smartphone. >> yeah. >> i think she was absolutely right in calling this person out. >> i'm impressed that she spotted her in a sea of

thousands. adele sees you. >> the fact that the woman had lights up, a tripod and a boom, you know. >> she had one of these over here. >> she had this. >> you have to imagine it had to be elaborate for adele to see it. >> she didn't really have these. >> makes for a funny story. >> she had a steady cam. anyway, we are looking, unfortunately, for steady rain to continue in texas. in fact, we've got the risk of 41 million people seeing some sort of severe weather today. especially into the southern plains. this may be upgraded to a slight risk later today. this is a slow-moving front pushing through. isolated storms. by the afternoon, san angelo, dallas, houston will see it on wednesday. more flash flooding possibility. look at this, thursday through saturday, this slow-moving front, all this moisture coming up. we know how much rain they've already gotten in texas.
