nbc 10 news starts now. shattering windows to save a little girl trapped inside a burning home in philadelphia. you'll hear the heroic efforts to bring her out. the sentences of hundreds of philadelphia inmates hang in the balance thanks to a supreme court ruling. today, a philadelphia judge will start hearing the resentencing cases of juveniles punished with life in prison without parole. we're tracking showers moving toward our region this friday morning. will that wet weather stretch into the weekend? we'll find out, it's friday, 4:00 a.m. good morning, this is "nbc 10 news today." i'm tracy davidson. let's get right to meteorologist bill henley with his first alert neighborhood forecast. a close look at conditions at

communities across pennsylvania, new jersey and delaware. bill, you're tracking showers this morning? >> yes, not everybody is seeing them. check out south philadelphia, citizens bank park. the grounded is dry. not raining yet. that will be changing at times this morning. we're not looking at an all-day rainfall. rain is moving into northern new castle county, delaware, in towards the philadelphia area, just a few sprinkles. this is a light rain towards philadelphia. steadier in west chester and southern chester county. into the reading area and berks county, light rainfall for reading right now. it's just starting to move into the lehigh valley for allentown, not yet into northampton county. showers, they'll be around at times during the day. the hour by hour forecast calling for a chance of showers this morning into the late morning hours, then mostly cloudy skies at 3:00 this afternoon. we will get into the upper 70s today but falls short of the 880 degree mark.

suburbs, the lehigh valley, showers starring things off. those showers extend into the late morning hours. at 3:00 this afternoon, mostly cloudy skies and 72. delaware, a chance of scattered showers. we're seeing is right now. during the afternoon hours it's mainly going to be cloudy. same story for new jersey and at the shore, mostly cloudy skies, showers are less likely there. we'll go through the futurecast hour by hour when i'm back in ten minutes, show you when the showers are likely to pop up. let's see how the traffic is moving. jessica boyington has your first alert traffic. >> we're watching 422, already a problem on this early friday morning around route 29 headed westbound on 422 right now. we are dealing with an accident scene. the reports are that the left lane is only blocked. traffic still getting by. as you can see here, all traffic is being diverted off the exit at route 29. 422 headed westbound around 29, road flares are blocking off the

roads right now. traffic is moving off on the exit ramp and being diverted around the scene. here's a schuylkill expressway, doing better here. no big problems or delays. an eastbound/westbound drive time of 13 minutes. we'll update you on 422 when i come back. >> 4:03. a philadelphia judge will hear the first of 300 resentencing cases of juveniles that were sentenced to life without parole. january's ruling said the decision must be applied retroactivey)which means those people in prison must be given a chance to be resentenced. the ruling aways to some 1,000 inmates across the country, including about 300 in philadelphia. i sat down yesterday with seth williams, philadelphia district attorney and he told me the resentencing process is not an instant one. >> there are a lot of different

parties, all working very hard together to ensure we get this right. philadelphia has more individuals than need to be resentenced as a result of any other city in america. important for your viewers to know 50% of them were convicted in the '80s and earlier. >> williams told me it could take up to three years to review all the cases and give all 300 prisoners a resentencing hearing. new from overnight, a person police say was shot in a dispute between neighbors is being treated for a graze wound. the gunfire happened just before midnight on thoron avenue in west oak lane. so far there have been no arrests. a 5-year-old girl rescued from a philadelphia house fire is in the hospital along with her mother and a police officer. the fire broke out yesterday afternoon. witnesses watched the first

rescue attempts but the smoke was too heavy. the girl's mortgage and off-duty police officer ended up injured trying to save her from the flames. video shows firefighters breaking windows. they eventually got the girl out. >> her mom ran in there several times to try to save her. she was coming out black from head to toe. >> we're hoping along with this community for a positive outcome for the mother and child. >> the girl and her mother are in critical condition. the officer is in stable condition. now to a story we brought you as breaking news last nature at 11:00. police have recovered the van of an elderly man found murdered in west philadelphia. investigators say his killer drove off in it after strangling the maintenance man in his home on theodore street on tuesday. police are still searching for the killer. now to this story from chester county. this is the face of a young life cut short. ryan benjamin was found dead in

east coventry township on memorial day. fishermen discovered her body in a pond. the 24-year-old was tied to a cinder block. now police are trying to track down her killer. authorities released pictures of jewelry and a tattoo. she worked as a preschool teacher at the warwick child care center. she lived with a family friend who said benjamin would also spend the night with friends. when she heard reports of a body found she became concerned. >> i tried calling her several times. it went right to voicemail, then i started to worry. >> benjamin's body showed no signs of strangulation, gunshot wound or blunt force trauma. authorities believe someone killed her and dumped her body in the pond. the military is mourning the death of at least six service members who died on u.s. soil yesterday. those deaths came from accidents in two different states with a third accident destroying an air force jet. at least five soldiers died

after an army truck overturned in a creek at ft. hood, texas. three other soldiers were rescued. they're in stable condition. four soldiers are still missing. in nashville, a pilot wasç killed yesterday when his blue angels jet crashed during a practice session. officials say the jet went down after takeoff near an airport where an air show is scheduled for this weekend. authorities don't yet know what caused the crash. and in colorado springs, an f-16 jet crashed at the air force academy commencement sayre money attended by president obama. no one was hurt in this crash, though. the pilot safely ejected. the president after learning about what happened, met with the pilot shortly after the incident to the thank him for his service. the air force said engine failure likely caused that crash. 4:07. a medical examiner's report confirms prince died of a drug overdose. the findings confirm two months of speculation.

the medical examiner in minnesota says the music legend died of an accidental feoverdos. some synthetic forms can be up to 50 times stronger than heroin. the focus of the criminal investigation turns to determining who supplied the drug. here in pennsylvania, governor wolf says he wants the state to take a bigger role in fighting opioid addiction. yesterday he talked about the $34 million he put in his budge tote combat drug abuse. he said that's just to start. the money will help fund 50 outpatient treatment centers across the state. wolf calls the budget request a down yamt toward solving the problem of heroin and other pain killer abuse. >> we're actually going to create an environment where you can get treatment and we can address the issues that affect you on a continuing basis.

>> pennsylvania ranks among the top states in the country for drug overdose deaths. meantime, new numbers from the philadelphia health department show the deadliest sections of the city when it comes to overdoses. more people are dying from opioid and heroin overdoses in port richmond, fishtown, kensington and tacony more than any other parts of the city. the data shows 67 out of every 100 residents in those areas died of an opioid overdeuce in to 16. the nbc 10 team spend months documenting the problem of opioid addiction in our problem. check out "generation addicted" on nbc10.com and the nbc 10 app. now your nbc 10 first alert neighborhood weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> clouds are back and this morning we're also tracking some rain, just a few light rain showers moving through philadelphia right now. the temperatures holding in the 60s to start with. we'll be in the upper 60s by 9:00 and still more wet weather

in store for us. rain and 67 in delaware. dry in south jersey, 65 degrees there. and so far, it's dry in the lehigh valley but the first rain drops are already starting to move in to some of the suburbs. the temperatures that are in the middle 60s right now won't get as warm this afternoon as what we saw yesterday. we were in the middle 80s yesterday afternoon. a warmup into the 70s, close to 80 degrees later on. you can see the first of the rain starting to move in to philadelphia. very light rainfall, moving through chester county into montgomery county. this is part of a system that looks more scattered to the west. it's not going to be an all-day rainfall. it's just the chance of showers that will be around through the day. the first batch of rain will move through as the temperatures warm up, we could see heavier downpours. you can see themç farther to t southwest. there's a possibility of thunderstorms in our area for this afternoon. futurecast shows that this is 6:30 this morning. look at the rain moving through. some of the same rain we're

dealing with right now. it extends into delaware as we go through the morning. 10:30 in the morning, a steadier rain through trenton, philadelphia and wilmington. it is mainly light. if we do get a thunderstorm popping up, that's when we'll see heavier downpours. the rain is going to be light. it starts to taper off and become more scattered into the lunch time hour. there's more wet weather to the west as we go into the afternoon and evening hours. don't put your umbrella away, just as things start to dry out this afternoon, that may not be the end of the wet weather. occasional showers, a chance of showers, high temperatures in the upper 70s with mostly cloudy skies with the suburbs and the lehigh valley. 7le degrees in bethlehem this afternoon. the umbra elle will go up at times in new jersey. a scattered shower, thunderstorm is possible for glassboro, 77 degrees today. mainly just cloudy at the shore. most of the activity, the rain will stay inland and wilmington and dover could be in for some showers. stays dry in lewes with cloudy skies and 74.

no, no, no! >> this was the wild scene in a cleveland courtroom yesterday. the father of a murder victim went airborne to get at the man convicted of killing his daughter and two other women. this happened moments after the judge sentenced the killer to death by lethal injection. we're trying to find out in the victim's father will be charged. we could learn today if charges will be filed. authorities finished their investigation. police are not recommending charges again the mother but the prosecutor's office will ultimately decide that. the 3-year-old boy spent about ten minutes with the gorilla. the animal dragged the child through the water at times. the zoo shot and killed the gorilla. the boy is okay. the zoo plans to re-open its gorilla exhibit tuesday with a new safety barrier that's higher and reinforced. 4:16. now to decision 2016.

four days before the california democratic primary. a new poll shows that hillary clinton and bernie sanders are in a dead heat. the usc/l.a. times poll shows sanders ahead of clinton by one point among registered voters. but clinton has a ten-point lead among likely voters. clinton took aim at the presumptive gop nominee in san diego yesterday. >> this is not someone who should ever have the nuclear code, because it's not hard to imagine donald trump leading us into a war just because somebody got under his very thin skin. >> the democratic front-runner added that electing trump president would be an historic mistake for the country. meantime, last night, donald trump fired back. he told supporters in san jose clinton did not look presidential, called her crooked and mo+e.

seeing thunderstorm activity right now. nowhere near us. those thunderstorms are moving to the northeast. we have a possibility of thunderstorms for us, especially later this morning and this afternoon. then we get a break for tomorrow. 78 degrees today. sunshine is back tomorrow. partly sunny sky, 85 the high temperature. here comes another round of wet weather. this time it will be more widespread and there's a greater potential for heavier rainfall and better chance of strong thunderstorms on sunday. we could see damaging wind, possibly even hail on sunday. then it's clearing out on monday, 82 degrees. chance ofç some showers on tuesday. and then wednesday and thursday, we're drying out, cooling down a bit on wednesday. back into the low 80s for thursday, friday and into the 80s on the weekend. starting on friday, a chance of showers will continue through the area over the next weekend. so stand by for some wet weather today and it looks like a 50/50 weekend. tracy? >> we'll take that, though. tomorrow looks great. thanks, bill.
