tonight, he's telling the story of how firefighters pulled him out. good evening, i'm jacqueline london. nbc 10 brought you the rescue live as it unfolded in south jersey. tonight, the farmer is telling us what it was like in that grain bin with 600,000 pounds of soybeans up to his waist. nbc 10's aundrea klein thomas has the latest. >> reporter: chris is resting easy tonight after spending hours in this bin getting rescued. the 72-year-old lifelong farmer says this is the most serious accident he's ever had. chris was doing well and is back on solid ground. >> i wasn't in any trouble but i wasn't getting down either. it was like he was stuck in the quicksand. >> reporter: skyforce 10 apertured first responders working to rescue the farmer from his grain bin. he was in the bin trying to fix a jam so he could continue loading his soybeans when he started to sink. when firefighters arrived, an

estimated 600,000 pounds of soybeans were packed up to his chest. >> a worker on location hit a stop button, kept it from going any further. >> reporter: the teams making rescue took three hours. once he was secured, firefighters put a steel cylinder around him and used a vacuum to suck the grain out of the bin enough to get him freed. >> this is probably one of your worst situations because you're working with an unstable substance. throughout the whole time all our rescuers had to be tied off along with the victim tied off. that way nobody got in more jeopardy of falling down deeper. >> reporter: he was taken to the hospital as a precaution. >> i was never in any pain. had no issues at all. >> reporter: he's already brushing off the incident calling it an unfortunate accident. the worst he's ever experienced. as for the first responders -- >> i don't know where all they came from, right yet, but i'll find that all out and properly thank them. >> reporter: within the last month, some of the responding agencies received training on how to conduct rescues from

confined spaces so all of that came in handy today. reporting in chesterfield, nbc 10 news. boxing great muhammad ali is in grave condition in the hospital with respiratory issues. ali has suffered from parkinson's disease for three decades and he's looked more and more frail in public lately. doctors think thousands of punches he took during his career likely caused his parkinson's. comcast sportsnet's john clark is here with a look at ali's ties to our area. >> yeah, muhammad ali may be the most well known and transcendent athlete in sports history, one of the greatest boxers ever, so charismatic, he became more well known for his social, political and religious beliefs. first appeared on the boxing scene in the early 6 0s, won a gold medal and became heavyweight champion of the world then he changed his name to muhammad ali and joined the

nation of islam. when he was drafted into the army, he refused to go because of his religious beliefs and he was against the vietnam war so he became arguably the most controversial figure in america. he was stripped of his title. had his boxing license revoked. he was arrested. but the supreme court overturned his conviction. a few years later, he made a comeback in the ring. where did he go to escape all the attention and concentrate on training? a town near reading and allentown. ore wigsburg, pennsylvania. then in 1971, ali lost for the first time to philly's own joe frazier. it was dubbed the fight of the century. ali won the heavyweight title for a third time in 1978. in his prime, he was outspoken and let everyone know his political beliefs. bigger than boxing, larger than life. his most famous last public appearance was the olympics of 1996. he lit the torch.

and one of his best quotes, "don't count the days. make the days count." he has done that. my favorite saying, "float like a butterfly, sting like a bee." muhammad ali also owned a house in cherry hill, new jersey. i'm john clark from comcast sportsnet. >> john, thank you for that. turning to our weather now. a dry summer night at the philadelphia museum of art. perfect weather for running up the rocky steps. things are about to change, though. we have declared a first alert for part of the weekend because of the potential for damaging storms. chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz has our nbc 10 first alert neighborhood forecast. glenn? >> yeah, that's right, jacqueline. we're talking about sunday, not tomorrow. and in all areas of our region aside from the jersey shore, i think they would get the storms pretty late sunday night. sunday afternoon and evening would be the times for the main threat and we're talking about the main threat being damaging

win winds, there's also a threat of some hail with nose storms. the area in brown has the greatest threat. that would include chester county, all of delaware and part of south jersey, but any part of the area pretty much could see some severe storms on sunday. but as far as now, we're not seeing much around. we do see stuff from the west and the southwest. that is going to be headed our way. as we go through the weekend. for tomorrow, though, it's mostly just cloud cover for much of the day then the showers come in late in the day. that's saturday. we'll time out when the worst weather sunday will come in just a few minutes. now, a middle school groundskeeper accused of tricking kids into sending him pornography. tonight, he's in jail and police want to know if there are other victims. nbc 10's drew smith reports from monroe township, gloucester county. >> reporter: michelle barringer runs on the trails through the williamstown middle school campus. she's seen maintenance workers out here but yesterday police

arrived to arrest this man at the grounds shop. >> it's appalling and we try to keep our kids as safe as possible and, like it's just horrible to hear. >> reporter: detectives accuse the 32-year-old contract worker of posing as a teenage girl and using facebook messenger to communicate with at least two students here. >> it's a shock. >> reporter: parents picking up kids tonight are just beginning to learn about the three-month investigation prompted by parents who police say discovered the pornographic messages to and from him, alleged fake account, which included pictures of their kids. >> if they're going to contract out, i think they should really know more about the companies they're contracting with and if they're doing background checks. >> reporter: he worked for the gca services group which said in a statement to nbc 10 his background check or work performance did not present reason for concern. the monroe school superintendent says the worker will not return to the district. for parents this is another reminder to talk social media safety with kids. >> as a parent you have to do

it, as works ining in a school have to do, it's hard. >> reporter: the detective in charge of the case tells me he's setting up interviews with other possible victims which means more charges could be coming in this case. in monroe township, drew smith, nbc 10 news. new at 11:00, a man is critically injured after a shooting in philadelphia's frankford section tonight. police say the victim was shot twice on charles street around 5:00. so far no word on any suspects. a bucks county pharmacist shoots and kills a would-be robber who jumped over the counter. police say the masked man had a shotgun and zip ties when he walked inside the pharmacy in levittown this morning. the pharmacist saw it coming on his security cameras. he grabbed his gun and ordered the guy to surrender but the man jumped over the counter and that's when the pharmacist shot and killed him. >> was entirely justified in his conduct and, frankly, should be commended.

from what i can see, performed a public service. >> police are still working to identify the deceased suspect. they released this photo of a tattoo on his stomach asking for the public's help. the getaway driver was sitting outside the pharmacy and didn't know his partner had been shot. he was arrested and will be charged with homicide. new information tonight about a training exercise that turned deadly at ft. hood in texas. the bodies of four more soldiers have been found a day after their truck overturned and was swept away in a rain-swollen creek. five other soldiers were killed and three more injured. the tragedy comes after days of heavy rains in central and southeast texas. at least six other people have died. a train towing cars full of oil derailed in oregon's colu columbia river gorge sparking a fire that sent a large plume of

smoke high in the sky. people within a half mile of the site were evacuated. no one was hurt. officials say no oil from the train has been spotted in the river. donald trump is refusing to back down after attacking the ethnicity of the judge overseeing fraud lawsuits against his now-debunk trump university. the presumptive republican nominee told cnn tonight the judge can't be fair because of his ethnicity. >> he's a mexican. we're building a wall between here and mexico. the answer is, he is giving us very unfair rulings. >> curiel was born in indiana and spent years prosecuting mexican drug cartels. he's barred by ethics rules of publici inly defending himself hillary clinton is seizing on the controversy. >> he is in it for himself in every way and that is yet

community remembers a pastor killed in a hit and run crash eight days ago. soldiers of the lord ministry hosted a memorial today for leon. he preached a sermon last thursday night then came to drop people off at that ministry when someone hit and killed him. the driver remains on the run tonight. they were just teenagers when they were sentenced to life in prison without parole. now, hundreds of inmates are getting a second chance. nbc 10's keith jones explains. >> jacqueline, many of these inmates have served three, even more decades and tonight i learned getting them eligible for parole could still be a long process. cell phones, the internet, the computer. all foreign objects to these inmates like this man, tyrone jones, convicted of murder at 16 years old. he's been behind bars for 43 years. >> as a 16-year-old, he didn't drive. he's never seen the ocean. >> reporter: and attorney hunter says tyrone who's now 60 never expected this, a resentence.

earlier this year the supreme court ruled it was unconstitutional to sentence people under 18 to life without parole. >> philadelphia has more individual s that need it be resentenced as a result of this than any other city in america. >> reporter: some 300 cases according to district attorney seth williams and today jones' sentence was vacated. he's eligible for parole. his deceased victim's family was consulted. >> they're willing to accept that, you know, the 43 years is sufficient at this point. >> he is completely rehabilitated. he has -- he put the electrical systems in the warden's house. >> reporter: yet that still doesn't compare to modern technology jones hasn't dealt with yet. luckily hunt says his client has four supportive sisters. the district attorney says one judge will take on these cases starting with the inmates who have been jailed the longest and could take them three years to go through every case. keith jones, nbc 10 news.

new at 11:00, a little girl whose scalp was ripped off when her hair became caught in a carnival ride last month talked about that incident for the first time today. >> it's been very stressful. really stressful. >> i don't think stressful's the word. >> you don't think stress is the word, yeah, i don't think stress is the word, either, but it's the best word we can use. >> elizabeth joined her mother during a news conference to update her progress. she said she is still in pain but doing fine. the 11-year-old was seriously injured during omaha's cinco de mayo festival and has been in the hospital ever since. when asked what memory she has about the accident, she says she just wasn't ready to talk about it. from our jersey shore bureau, atlantic city shuttered show boat casino hotel will re-open next month but not as a casino. the show boat will be a hotel. the former owner put a restriction on the deed that the new buyer could not re-open the

show boat as a ka secasino. the developer hopes to have most of the rooms open by july 4th. he's working on several new amenities for the complex. a credit rating agency predicts as many as four atlantic city casinos could close. pitch ratings says the trump taj mahal resort and the golden nugget would be most vulnerable. valley is also susceptible to a possible shutdown. voters will decide in november whether to authorize two new casinos outside new york. i am ironman. >> superheroes and comicbook characters of all ages are taking over the pennsylvania convention center this weekend. it's hosting wizard world comic-con for the 16th time. thousands of fans come from across the country to celebrate the best in pop culture, novels, video games and sci-fi. >> it's not just -- it's people that are really talented and really passionate and love being here.

judgment free. acceptance. just everybody here wants to show off what they love. >> some huge names will meet with fans at comic-con this weekend. chris evans and chris hemsworth of "marvel" fame and michael j. fox from "the walking dead." so much going on, glenn, how much will rain get in the way? >> jacqueline, we're going to be seeing some rain during the weekend, no doubt about that. i think there will be more on sunday than saturday. it's kind of a mild night. it's humid. it's going to stay humid all weekend. we only got up to 75 degrees today. but with some sunshine, we ought to go to 87 tomorrow, l 82 on sunday. closer to average. nothing on the doppler close up, but there is quite a bit of moisture back to the west. some of that is going to be headed this way over the weekend. so we have just some scattered showers on saturday. nothing severe. the first alert is not for saturday, but we could certainly see some showers. here we are by 11:00 a.m.,

seeing a couple of them. and then in the afternoon, again, they're just mostly isolated. mostly out to the west. that's 9:30 at night on saturday night. and that is a sign of things to come for sunday. and that's when we've got the first alert out for the potential for severe storms. and all areas of our region could see some of those storms. even the jersey shore. that will be later sunday night. sunday afternoon and evening is the main threat and damaging winds would be the main threat. the ground is saturated from all that rain we got in may. so it won't take that much to knock some trees over. and, of course, the highest threat as we showed you in parts of chester county, all of delaware, parts of south jersey, but just about any part of the area has the potential for seeing at least a gusty thunderstorm. let's see what happens with the futurecast. we go through the day on sunday and you'll be able to see this. 9:00 a.m., things are fairly

quiet but then it gets moving. it's warm. it's humid. and here come the thunderstorms in the afternoon. perhaps in a line. that's at 5:00. then as we go to 7:00, there's some pretty strong storms with some, again, gusty winds going through. by 8:00, east of the philadelphia area, and as they weaken later on at night, or takes later at night for them to reach the jersey shore. so it's one round of really strong storms on sunday. so it's not going to be an all-day thing. tomorrow at the shore, at least partly sunny skies. 74. sunday we have the showers. mostly late. very late. sunday night especially. then on monday, we get the sunshine. at the poconos, chance of an afternoon shower on saturday. we have showers and storms on sunday. yes. and then monday is dry.
