"nbc 10 news" starts now. right now at 11:00, someone shot a local teen early this morning, and the victim had to take matters into his own hands when it came to getting medical help. good morning, i'm vai sikahema. at this hour, philadelphia police are searching for the man who shot and pam osbourne is live. you've been reaching out to the police. what are they saying? >> reporter: vai, right now we're still waiting on an update from police, but i can tell you that northwest detectives spent the morning interviewing the three people who were inside of the car with the victim at the time that he was shot, and right now police are working to identify those two suspected shooters. now we went back to the

neighborhood later this morning. we saw one surveillance camera that police said they were going to be looking at today. police tell us the victim, a 17-year-old, had stopped in the 5600 block of warren street to pick up a friend. this was around 1:00 this morning. they were about to drive out of a parking space when two men came up to the car. one tapped on the window with a gun and announced a robbery. the victim tried to drive away, and that's when police say the gunman fired three shots, all three hitting the car, one of them hitting the victim in the arm. he was able to drive himself three miles down the road to saint christopher's hospital. at last check he was listed in stable condition. the shooter ran about 50 feet after the car leaving those spent shell casings behind over the distance on that highway. again, police talking to the victim and the three passengers who were in that car. they say both of these suspects

were in disguise so, again, they're looking at these surveillance cameras to see if perhaps they captured an image to get a better description of the shooter and the second suspect who was with that shooter. again, we put in a request for that information as soon as we get some more we'll pass it along to you. reporting live, pamela osborne, "nbc 10 news." >> pam, thank you. philadelphia police, meanwhile, are trying to find the shooter or shooters who killed a man in kensington. the man was talking to a woman along lippincott street at 3:30 this morning when a car drove up and someone started firing. officers who responded to the scene took the man to the hospital where he died. a small electrical fire forced guests from their rooms overnight at the embassy suites in center city. the hotel was evacuated around 12:30 this morning. one of the guests sent us this video. after 25 minutes they were allowed back inside. some guests said they climbed 25

flights of stairs to get back to their rooms. now your "nbc 10" first alert neighborhood weather. >> severe storms are gone from our area, but they did leave a mark. this is time lapse showing them sweeping through the "nbc 10" area. they brought strong winds and rain and left thousands in the dark. the last remaining customers without power will be back online this morning. a home in morristown burlington county caught fire after lightning struck there. >> and a big boom and she comes and says, mommy, what was that? i go into the back and i looked out the back door, i thought maybe one of the tree branches fell on the house and there were flames roaring out of the back side of the house. >> south philadelphia the skies cleared just in time for a huge crowd to enjoy an outdoor performance by beyonce at lincoln financial field. karen thomas is here with our forecast. all right. we're looking at plenty ofñi

sunshine today. feeling like summertime. we say good-bye to the storms that rolled through yesterday and last evening. that's well off the coast right now. we really don't even have too many clouds back here to speak of. high pressure has moved in and continues to build into our area so we will be dry today with mostly clear skies and plenty of sunshine. all of the eyes and action happening here. tropical storm collin here in the gulf of mexico. it's a pretty powerful storm. it's moving in a northeasterly fashion right now at 15 miles per hour. it is set to make landfall right at about the tampa area about 8:00 tonight. a lot of folks getting ready here with the tropical storm warnings in effect. for our winds today, a little breezy condition out there but nothing like the winds that we had with the storms that rolled through late yesterday. a little calmer today for sure. we're looking beautiful with bright sunshine, especially at the ballpark in wilmington, delaware. i think it's going to be a nice day all in all. everybody can get outside.

maybe for lunchtime you can have your lunch outside and enjoy. temperatures will be soaring above average today. we're looking at temperatures in the mid 80s in philadelphia. the suburbs not doing too badly either. 83 in doils ton. plenty of sunshine in the lehigh valley. new jersey checking in pretty good, 83 in wildwood with sunshine. if you're at the beach, you're going to need your sun block. back to you. all right. thank you, karen. jessica boyington is here with traffic. i'm looking at a police cruiser and tow truck. that can't be good. >> disabled vehicle, vai. out in your neck of the wood. out in mount laurel watching route 73 near 295. but this is headed southbound right here. coming off of the ramp from 295 where this disabled vehicle is. you can see there is a police officer on the scene there, tow truck there. almost getting this cleared out of the way right now.

you can see some small delays there. the vine street expressway didn't look too hot this morning. no more delays that way. cleared out of the way. no more delays headed towards the schuylkill expressway. we're watching out for the set of traffic lights malfunctioning on kelly drive. southbound traffic on 25th cannot be accessed. they're working on it. jessica, thank you. this morning a controversy is building between the catholic church and lawmakers in harrisburg. at issue a bill designed to help victims of child sex abuse in pennsylvania. "nbc 10's" matt delucia has the details. >> reporter: the fight against this legislation went to church this weekend. archbishop charles chaput asked people to fight against it. house bill 1947. it passed in harrisburg back in april. essentially what this bill does is extends the statute of

limitations on claims of sexual abuse. it would essentially allow past victims to file claims up until they're 50 years of age, whereas, right now the limit is age 30. it would also eliminate the criminal statute of limitations on future sexñi abuse cases. >> many don't come forward ever and many don't come forward for decades and decades and decades. their lives are inalterably changed. i believe the statute should be lifted criminally and civilly. i supported what was a compromise measure to get some measure of justice to victims of sexual abuse. >> reporter: the bill does have its supporters. philadelphia archdiocese, they're calling this bill an attack on the church. archbishop chaput said they're trying to help victims. he calls this destructive legislation and area catholics will end up bearing the burden. the bill is expected to be heard

in the state senate in the next couple of weeks. i'm matt delucia, "nbc 10 news." today philadelphia federal judge will hear arguments over a list of suspected conspirators in the bridgegate case be released. a person on the list challenged its release claiming his right to due process would be violated. media outlets are pushing the feds to identify those who allegedly conspired to snarl traffic on the george washington bridge in 2013 in order to punish the mayor of fort lee for not endorsing governor chris cloit christie's re-election. janet yellen is expected to speak at the world council luncheon. it will likely focus on the government jobs report for may which many economic experts found disappointing. economists and investors are looking for any hint from yellen that the fed will raise interest

rates. a local congressman is calling on the u.s. house to look into tainted groundwater near hundreds of military bases. one of those bases is the horsham air guard station. congressman brendan boyle said he asked for a hearing in washington after the epa tightened testing rules for contaminants in drinking water. people in horsham are worried about links between tainted water from the disclosed -- from the closed base and illnesses. you can hear some loud sirens like that around the limerick nuclear power plant later today. a siren test will last three minutes at 2:00 p.m. this is one of two full volume tests done each year. there are 155 sirens montgomery, chester, and burks county within a 10 mile radius of this plant. one final trip home. this morning muhammad ali's body is back in his hometown.

this morning people across the country and here in our area are remembering boxing legend muhammad ali. he arrived back in his hometown of louisville, kentucky. nbc's jay gray is there with news about memorial services. >> reporter: hey there. we continue to see fans show up at the muhammad ali center, many leaving flowers, balloons, boxing gloves. notes for the ali family. it's been an outpouring since his death on friday. we're learning more about the public services planned later this week. first will be on thursday an islamic prayer service. it will be held at freedom hall on friday. that will be followed by a 19 mile funeral procession through some of the areas in this city that helped form a young cassius clay before he was muhammad ali. speaking at a service later in the day here will be his wife

ii memorial in washington, d.c. today marks the 72 years, rather, since allied soldiers stormed the shores of normandy, france, in order to fight nazi germany. happening today, we could find out if the family of a boy who fell into the gorilla enclosure at the cincinnati zoo will face any charges. the prosecutor is expected to give an update on the case this afternoon. the boy fell into the exhibit just over a week ago and was dragged by a 17-year-old gorilla named harambe. zoo staff shot and killed the gorilla. investigators are also looking into what caused a small plane to make an emergency landing in central florida last night. the cessna plane didn't appear to have any damage when it touched down in the middle of the road in the city of temple terrace near tampa. neither the pilot nor anyone on the ground was hurt. tropical storm collin is making an impact on parts of

florida. this is video along the gulf of mexico. rising tide and wind gusts of 30 miles an hour show the storm is on its way. collin is gaining speed and strength. it's expected to make landfall in florida later today. you can see the dark skies being created by tropical storm collin. this is a live look right now from tampa. forecasters say rain from the storm could cause serious flooding along much of the state's gulf coast. now your "nbc 10" first alert neighborhood weather. >> i'm meteorologist karen thomas, and it is looking like a very nice forecast for the start of our work week. we're going to call it a beautiful monday. our weather story has us with plenty of sunshine today, however, we are anticipating a cold front moving through the area tomorrow afternoon. so have the umbrellas ready for a pop-up shower possible tomorrow afternoon. today though, look at this, all clear. the blue rock stadium in

wilmington, delaware. plenty of sunshine there looking fantastic. satellite radar reinforcing the fantastic forecast. we are all dry. we say good-bye to the storms. you can see them well off the shoreline here. boy, they moved very quickly through our area. did bring some damage before all was said and done. system got out of here overnight. high pressure building into our area. this is a far reaching system. we'll take you all the way down here to the gulf of mexico. here you see tropical storm colin. keeping a close watch on that. strong winds 45 to 50 miles per hour. it is slated to make landfall tonight. here's a closer satellite picture. the disturbance is far reaching here as well. it is expected to just cut south of georgia through the carolinas and off shore missing us entirely. but we'll keep a close eye on it. the folks in florida certainly want to prepare for that system. future cast has us drying out

just a little bit. little less humid overnight tonight and into tomorrow afternoon and evening hours. so that's going to feel a little nicer for us. we started with the humidity building yesterday in front of those storms, and then afterwards we really want to cut the temperature and diminish the humidity. so that will be happening. but take a look at the ten-day outlook when we talk about temperatures lowering just a bit. all right. so mid 80s today, which is summer like temperature. well above average. we get a sprinkle or two possible tomorrow afternoon. still warm, but then look what happens here mid week in philadelphia. this is pretty incredible. we actually slip below average high temperature this time of year, and then check out this. look at the overnight low here for friday. we're in the 50s.ñr so we do get a cooldown mid week. thursday is going to feel quite cool. humidity will cut and the temperatures will drop just a bit. a little rain shower activity and the temperatures will bump as we head into next weekend, and then a week from today we are looking to go back into the

trend with the lower 80s. all in although it's looking like a really nice forecast so enjoy your neighborhood weather. well, one fast food giant is helping its employees get ahead. mcdonald's arch way opportunity program helps its workers advance their education. joining us is enelda monty and. >> frank: could he, operator/owner of four local mcdonald's. he's also enelda's boss. we welcome you both. frank, let's start with you. tell us about the archway opportunity program and how it works. >> the archway opportunity actually started in april of 2015, and currently there are four elements that we have available to all of our potential employees. one is going back to school and getting a degree in their high school. there are i think 40,000 people

or 40 million people that are adults that do not have a high school diploma. and with our program, they are able to enroll into the program and actually get a high school certificate, not a ged, so, again, we're trying to help individuals achieve their goal to succeed in life. we also have college credited opportunities through all of our classes that we have in the mcdonald's training program, and you can actually transfer those over to one of the six colleges that we do have assigned. >> i went to the website and looked and scrolled through that. i think what i'm most impressed about the program, frank, is the fact that it works with people where they are. >> yes. >> so if you're an employee of mcdonald's and you speak very little english, there's a program, this program helps you learn how to speak english. if you don't have your high school diploma, it helps you get an equivalep4k wherever you are in your life, it will help you get an associate's degree, bachelor's.

enelda, tell us your story, your experience. you're one of the success story. this program was only launched last april and you're one of the success stories. >> yes. fortunately when i started with mcdonald's i didn't have any english. i came straight from the dominican republic. later in 2013 i decide, okay, i'm going to go to school so i came to frank. frank was a great help explaining the program and everything they have. archway toñi opportunity helpede in different greatçó ways. a lot of work, having a home, having a family. >> you have four children. >> i haéeñ four children, a husband, a full family. how will that go down between work, full time school and doing the work. frankñi introduced archway to opportunity and we're trying to encourage every individual that work for mcdonald's and those that don't to come and join us in the workplace to use the

sky force 10 over breaking news on i-76. several cars have been involved in an accident as you can see here including three vehicles, also that tractor-trailer. at least one pickup truck is on its side. we're hearing there are multiple injuries on the scene. we're going to continue to gather details and information and bring you that information as soon as we get this it. you see the backup there on the schuylkill. early morning gunfire leaves a teen shot and the victim relied on himself when it came to getting medical attention. right now the search is on for the two men who shot him. section. police say this man demanded money from the cashier at the store on south broad street back on may 21st. when the woman said she couldn't open the register, the man tried to do it himself. when that failed, he ran out of the store. no one was hurt. a 5-year-old girl was died from injuries she suffered after a fire ripped through her northeast philadelphia home last thursday. this is a picture of sophia olson. it was taken at her graduation from pre-k. the fire broke out late thursday afternoon at this home on herford lane in northeast philadelphia. the girl's mother and an off duty police officer ended up injured trying to save the girl from the flames. her mother is still in the hospital. the phillies are trying to identify a man who threw a beer bottle at the first baseman ron howard. howard had just made the final out of the game when he saw a

bottle at his feet while walking back to the phillies dugout. he told "comcast sportsnet" saying the incident crossed the line and became personal. he's done too much for philadelphia to have that kind of stuff happen. >> that's dangerous for whoever threw that. we can't have that happen. of course i'm concerned for my players' safety. >> i think it's rude for anybody to throw anything at anybody, especially when they're at work. >> does this make philadelphia fans look bad? >> look like morons. >> tv cameras did not capture the bottle being thrown but security video did. again, the phillies are trying to track down the person responsible. decision 2016. democrat hillary clinton is on the doorstep of her party's presidential nomination. she won the puerto rico primary yesterday. nbc news projects clinton is now just 19 delegates shy of clinching the nod. the former secretary of state breezed to victory over senator bernie sanders in puerto rico.

with 2/3 of the votes counted clinton has the majority of the votes. bernie sanders is showing no siñ+ns of surrendering. he said the democratic convention in philadelphia will be a contested convention. his campaign chief said sanders is confident about winning tomorrow's california primary and swaying super delegates to support his bid. new jersey and california are the big prizes tomorrow as six states hold their primaries. polls showed hillary clinton ahead in new jersey and it's a dead heat between clinton and bernie sanders in california. donald trump is coming under more fire for new comments that some are calling bigoted. on friday trump referred to a judge's mexican heritage as a conflict of interest in a lawsuit involving the now defunct trump university. yesterday the gop candidate said it's possible that a muslim judge would also be biased toward him. former house speaker newt gingrich called trump's comments not presidential.

we're still ten years away from the big celebrations for america's 250th birthday, but organizers in our area are already starting to figure out how to mark the occasion. "nbc 10's" katy zachry tells us why the planning is beginning right now. >> reporter: organizers tell me they already feel behind in the planning. they say this birthday celebration is on the same level as the olympics or the world's fair and it's focused right here in philadelphia. >> for the city it's huge. >> reporter: imagine the nation's biggest and most spectacular birthday party philadelphia has ever hosted. that's what's being planned for the city in 2026. it will be the country's 250th birthday and these two are part of the early çóplanning. >> ideas that we're not just commemorating the revolution but we're really thinking about where we've been as a country leading into the 250th anniversary. >> reporter: it's a tall task

news." a new jersey couple gets the wedding gift of a lifetime courtesy of a music star. taylor swift made a surprise appearance at this couple's reception. this picture of swift and the lucky couple was posted on instagram. she performed "blank space." they got married back in april with the groom's mother before she passed away. his sister wrote to swift to tell her how he and his mom danced to swift's song after the wedding. after reading that story swift agreed to attend the reception. very nice. video from overnight shows the chaos caused which a kanye west pop-up concert in new york city. the rapper planned to perform at webster hall at 2:00 this morning. &háhp &hc% his performance at the governor's ball music festival was canceled due to last night's storm. thousands of fans showed up. webster hall can only hold 1500 so they candles the pop-up show.

west drove through the crowd and a flag raising ceremony in honor of the disability fight parade. the parade is saturday. today at noon two city council member and advocates for the disabled will raise that flag. some special dogs got to show off this morning. these canines shared their talents during a unique competition. we'll show you how they were putting their best paws forward coming up. we have dry and sunny conditions right now, but we do have rain and a cooldown in our forecast. i'll have all your weather details after the break.

sky force 10 is over breaking news on westbound i-76. this is near mill creek road in lower marion township montgomery county. several cars have been involved in an accident there, including three vehicles and as we pull back here, you see a tractor-trailer, that red cab there is a tractor-trailer. at least one pickup truck is on its side. we just saw at least two people transported from the scene on stretchers. we'll continue to gather details and we'll bring you more information as we scroll along here. you'll see the backup on the westbound side of the schuylkill. so be aware of that if you're heading out the door. the best trained canine units in the country are showing their skills in philadelphia today.

the university of pennsylvania police department and penn vet working dog center are hosting the uspca national detective dog files in re:'s ferry. more than 100 canine teams are being tested on how well they test things like narcotics and explosive explosives. dogs can get individual awards and certification of their skills. >> when they go to court, if they've done a search on a vehicle or a house and they find drugs, the defense tries to suppress that evidence, you know, the dog is certified by an outside organization. >> the event continues through today and then there will be another round of trials tomorrow. the philadelphia skyline is changing. one of the new towers rising in center city has a special connection to us here at "nbc 10". when it's complete it will be the city's tallest building.

system. we'll take you all the way down to the gulf of mexico. here you see tropical storm collin. keeping a close watch on that. very strong storm with winds about 45 to 50 miles per hour. it is slated to make landfall tonight. here's a closer satellite system. the disturbance is far reaching here as well. it is expected to cut south of georgia through the carolinas and off shore missing us entirely. future cast has us drying out just a little bit. little less humid overnight tonight into early tomorrow and then tomorrow afternoon and evening hours. so that's going to feel a little nicer for us. we started with the humidity building yesterday in front of those storms and then afterwards we really went to the temperatures and diminished the humidity. that will be happening. take a look at the ten day outlook.

temperatures are lowering just a bit. mid 80s today, which is summer like temperature. well above average. we get a sprinkle or two possible tomorrow afternoon. still warm but then look what happens here mid week in philadelphia. this is pretty incredible. we actually slip below average high temperature this time of year and then check out this, 78. look at the overnight low here for friday. we're in the 50s. so we do get a cooldown mid week. this urs is going to feel quite cool. humidity will cut and the temperatures will drop just a bit. little rain shower activity and the temperatures will bump as we head into next weekend and then a week from today we are looking to go back into the trend with the lower 80s. all in although it's looking like a really nice forecast so enjoy your neighborhood weather. you wanna see something intense?

showboat is expected to be back in business. that means hundreds of open jobs. we're asking when workers can start applying and the impact the opening will have this afternoon on "nbc 10 news" at 4:00. now to an update on breaking news that we've been following over the last half hour or so. pile up on the schuylkill expressway. want to show you this. sky force 10 is live over the crash on mill creek road in lower marion township montgomery county. live picture that you're looking at from sky force 10. at least eight cars and trucks are involved in the accident. tractor-trailer in the red cab is also involved. pickup truck was just up righted. we've seen at least two people being taken away on stretchers. most of the lanes on interstate 76 are blocked. we'll have an update on "nbc 10" this afternoon.
