nominee, hillary clinton, has another reason to smile this morning. a brand-new nbc news/surveymonkey online poll shows 48% of respondents would vote for clinton if the election happened today. she edges out donald trump by four points. what does it mean for bernie sanders and a fractured democratic party? we have complete coverage. we'll start with kristen welker on the trail for us this morning. >> good morning to you. this is a historic moment eight years in the making. secretary clinton becoming the first woman ever to clinch her party's nomination. she's not declaring victory yet. senator sanders isn't accepting the results. this morning, they both have the same message to the folks who live in the six primary states. get out and vote. >> reporter: hillary clinton making her mark on history. >> according to the news, we are on the brink of a historic,

historic, unprecedented moment. >> reporter: nbc news projecting clinton has clinched the democratic nomination. the news catching clinton off guard, forcing her to deliver hastily-delivered remarks. >> we have work to do. we're going to fight hard for every single vote, especially right here in california. >> reporter: clinton later capping the moment with a previously planned star-studded eventilate monday night. >> we're going to come out of the primary even stronger to take on donald trump. >> reporter: bernie sanders' campaign, which poured most of its remaining resources into california, called the decision a rush to judgment. sanders remaining defiant, singling out nbc and the ap for calling the race for clinton. >> people of california have the right to determine who is going to be president of the united states. not necessarily having to listen to ap or nbc. >> reporter: the clinton campaign worried clinching the

nomination could dampen turnout in california, where a clinton win would make it all but impossible for sanders to stay in the race. she and her campaigner in chief holding 34 events in the past week alone, taking aim at donald trump. >> i'll make america great again. that is a code word. what it really means is, i'll make america great, the way it was 50 years ago. >> reporter: this morning, signs president obama is already working to unify the deeply divided party. speaking with bernie sanders on the phone this weekend. aides tell nbc news the president could endorse clinton as early as this week. the question, what will sanders do now? it was eight years ago today hillary clinton conceded to barack obama. >> although we weren't able to shatter that highest, hardest glass ceiling this time, thanks to you, it's got about 18 million cracks in it. >> reporter: in an interview with rachel maddow before

clinton clinched, she called on sanders to do the same. >> it's important to unify the democratic party. i think it's equally important this time around. >> sanders' argument is that the math that put clinton over the top relies on super delegates. those are those elected officials who don't officially cast their ballots until the conventi convention. this is the same process that has been used in every election in modern history. secretary clinton's lead is sizable any way you look at it. senator sanders will mark tonight in california. secretary clinton will be here in brooklyn. >> kristen welker starting us off, thank you. for more, let's bring in steve kornacki and nicolle wallace. steve, we'll start with you at the monitor. all day yesterday, hillary clinton, by everybody's math, was 19 delegates short of clinching the nomination. what happened? >> there were no primaries or caucuses yesterday. people are wondering, what happened. we'll explain exactly. the number we have her overall,

2,384. the magic number, 2,383. what happened? two things. number one, puerto rico had a primary on sunday. it took a while to count the delegates. she got a few extra delegates added to this category, the pledged delegates. you win those caucuses. this is key, super delegates. who are these? elected officials, members of congress, governors, party leaders. they get to vote at the convention. they're free agents, voting for who they want. they declared yesterday, a number of them, for hillary clinton. >> any of this can be a moot point today because six states go to vote. >> this is all before the big set of final contests. poll closing times, number of delegates. 126 in new jersey alone. 475 out in california. bernie sanders can win some of these states. he might win a lot of the states. hillary clinton will get a lot of delegates, too. she's barely over right now. after tonight, she's going to be

significantly over. >> come join us here. >> nicolle, steve set the table for you. bernie sanders, what is his rational for saying he needs to take this to the convention? even president obama is calling him. we don't know what the conversation was, but it seems to be nudging him through the stages of grief so the democratic party can move on. >> there's been no rational for bernie sanders' political effort since march. there's been no mathematical path for sanders to top clinton for months now. he is, i believe, viewing himself now as a leader of a revolution. i think in his mind, he must see clinton as an equally bad choice as donald trump. he's doing as much harm for her as trump is. >> with the back and forth over sanders, clinton and trump and everything on the republican side, can we stop and recognize history? i mean, this is ta big deal. >> eight years ago, clinton talked about 18 million hits in

the glass ceiling and now, she comes back eight years later and she'll be the democratic nominee. it is a major achievement. >> still have the republicans to talk about. you guys, stay here for a bit. hillary clinton's likely opponent in the general election, donald trump, is creating more unrest. he reportedly usualed supporters to intensify criticism of a judge and journalist. peter alexander joins us now from down the road at trump tower. good morning to you. >> good morning. if there were ever any doubt donald trump is a one-man commander of this campaign, in a conference call monday, trump overruled a memo sent out by members of his team encouraging surrogates not to discuss the trump university case. trump says some of his staffers simply aren't so smart. >> reporter: donald trump under fire. on fox news, trying to turn the page. >> i don't care if the judge is mexican or not, i'm going to do great with the mexican people

because i provide jobs. i don't care about mexican. we're being treated unfairly. >> reporter: trump softening his tone after repeatedly claiming that judge curiel, overseeing the trump university lawsuits against him, is biased because of his mexican heritage. taking sides, former california governor, arnold schwarschwarze, who appointed curiel in 2007, praising him as an american hero. the course of criticism among republicans growing louder. ted cruz. >> it is inappropriate to att k attack ethnicity. >> reporter: marco rubio. >> this is the choice that voters have given us. >> reporter: hillary clinton sla slamming trump. >> this is another example of how he is absolutely impervious to the values of america. >> reporter: trump, who has cast himself as heir to ronald

reagan's legacy. >> i've evolved on many issues over the years, and so has ronald reagan. >> reporter: publicly rejected by reagan's son michael. tweeting if his father were alive today, this would likely be the first time he'd not support the nominee of the gop. facing backlash, trump is personally delivering new marshing omar marching orders. it included telling people to attack the judge. i would go at em. trump's campaign manager telling nbc news, the report is not accurate. >> sources familiar with the conversation tell me that donald trump and the rnc chair reince priebus have had conversations in recent days. trump is publicly litigated a lawsuit over a private business but doing it from his new position as the de facto leader of the republican party, and

hurting the party in the process. matt and savannah? >> peter alexander, thank you very much. back to nicolle and steve. the political train the littered with bodies of political pundits who say, this statement or that statement, this behavior or that behavior, will be the end of donald trump. >> right. >> is there any evidence this is somehow different? >> no. donald trump's supporters, i don't think, will peel off in the general public. this will become an increasingly difficult campaign for anyone who has to govern under the banner as a republican to get behind. donald trump has made it abundantly clear that he doesn't care about the republican party. in fact, in these moves, he cares more about his personal piz int business interests. trump university, i'm told by folks close to trump, is something he may have a little embarrassment about. he's going to double down. he's going to protect his business assets as a hedge, in case the political venture during work out. >> people think he's worried

about losing the lawsuit so he's chastising the judge so he has a reason to say he lost. >> exactly. >> steve, if you're a republican running for a seat in congress, or trying to hold your seat in congress, you know that over the next four or five months, these are the questions you're going to face every time a camera is near you. >> it might not be this issue, but this is the sort of thing you'll have to deal with. just the body language from like a marco rubio right there. also, ted cruz, i thought that was striking. keep in mind, so far, ted cruz has not endorsed donald trump. i talked to one of his former aides who said he doesn't think ted cruz will endorse trump before the campaign is over. >> this report from bloomberg politics about the conference cal call. trump was on the phone saying, my campaign staffers don't know what they're talking about and we should double down on the criticism of the judge. >> campaign staffers getting blamed, that's the only reason you work on a campaign, so you can take the blame. it's never the boss's fault.

that's within the realm of acceptable. this idea you're going to attack a judge based on his ethnicity is the definition of racism. lindsey graham called it un-american. these are the attacks you'll hear when trump engaged in this kind of bareknuckle politicking. >> thank you, as always. let's turn to tropical storm colin, making landfall on the florida coast overnight. this morning, more than half of the sunshine state is under a state of emergency. that storm now heads up the coast and soaking the southeast. kerry sanders is in charleston, south carolina. good morning. >> good morning, matt. thousands of residents are making up without electricity in florida, georgia. here in south carolina, and a little north into north carolina. tropical storm colin's center, or you might call it an eye, has moved off the coast into the atlantic near savannah, georgia. >> reporter: this morning, tropical storm colin is taking

aim at the carolina coast, a powerful one-two punch. torrential rains and damaging winds. >> it's a mess. >> reporter: this dramatic video as the storm swept over a house near jacksonville. >> hard to believe. >> reporter: seen from two an e angles. the homeowner convinced it was one of several reported tornadoes. the roof ripped off in seconds. overnight, a path of destruction through florida and parts of georgia. >> it was so fast. it went by so fast. >> reporter: fast and furious. thousands without power this morning. along the coast, waterspouts spotted just offshore. high waves crashing over seawalls, swamping the deck of this popular bar on the beach. the storm tore boats apart, sinking some and leaving others adrift. a sarasota police officer fighting to save this one.

m and a d and a dramatic rescue. a man and his elderly mother saved by the coast guard. everything they own, gone. >> i'm lost with words. it's a tragedy, but i'm alive. >> on monday, some airlines had to cancel flights in florida due to tropical storm colin. it's expected they'll resume regular service today. meantime, the rains associated with the tropical storm, which i noted as off the coast of georgia, extend more than 500 miles to the southwest. all the way down to south of tampa, where they were hit with seven inches of rain. may get another three inches of rain today. matt and savannah, tropical storm colin has been a real soaker. >> kerry sanders, thank you. it's not finished yet, al. >> not quite. it'll be moving quickly. it's going to start losing its strength quickly, too. we may even see it lose its tropical storm designation by the 8:00 advisory.

keep you posted on that. heavy rain in tampa now. another system pushing through, part of the cold front. colin is 90 miles south-southwest of charleston. 50-mile-per-hour winds. it's moving to the northeast at 31 miles per hour. we have tropical storm warnings along the southeastern atlantic coast. more flood watches through florida as the front pushes down. you're going to see the heavy rain through tampa. also, this front pushes it offshore pretty quickly. that's the good news. bad news for florida, this front lays there, dumping more rain. look at the rainfall amounts. flash flood warnings for tampa, sarasota, st. petersburg until 9:00 a.m. we could see three more inches of rain. another inch along the carolina coast. this is moving very, very quickly. >> thank you. breaking news overnight. 11 people, including 7 police officers, were killed in a car bombing in istanbul today. turkish officials say the attack targeted a bus carrying riot

police during rush hour traffic. at least 36 people were wounded. there was no immediate claim of responsibility. want to turn now to a growing controversy surrounding the sentencing of a former stanford university student convicted in an on-campus sexual assault. the judge and the student's father is under fire after the promising athlete received just six months in jail. gadi schwartz has the details on this story. >> good morning. brock turner has been banished from campus. he is never allowed to set foot on stanford grounds again. many people here are still outraged, saying the judge's six-month sentence sends the wrong message. >> reporter: 20-year-old swimming star brock turner could have been looking at 14 years for sexually assaulting an intoxicated and unconscious woman behind a dumpster on stanford's campus. caught in the act by two swedish students who tackled him and held him there until police

arrived. >> it was horrible. it was hard to see. >> reporter: instead of 14 years, a judge has ruled he'll spend six months in jail, eligible for parole in three months, citing his age and lack of criminal record in sentencing. documents obtained by nbc news, turner said, i can barely live with myself. i can't even get out of bed in the morning. i think about it every second of every day. the lenient sentence enraged thousands. online, a petition circulating with more than 200,000 signatures, calling for the judge to be removed from the bench. some saying, this is a case of class privilege. >> if getting good grades or swimming fast is a basis for giving you an exception from the california state minimum penalties, then basically what you're saying is, it's open season on college women. >> reporter: others pointing out the judge was a former stanford athlete himself. adding fuel to the rage, a statement made by turner's

father, asking for leniency, saying, his life will never be the one he dreamed about and worked so hard to achieve. that is a steep price to pay for 20 minutes of action out of his 20 plus years of life. turner's father now apologizing for his choice of words. while the victim has written a heart wrenching 12-page letter to turner that has gone viral. your damage was concrete. my damage was internal, unseen. i carry it with me. you took away my worth, privacy, energy, safety, intimacy, independence, my own voice, until today. >> turner will have to register as a sex offender. he could be out as early as the beginning of the fall semester. matt, back to you. >> gadi schwartz, thank you very much. al is back with the rest of the forecast. >> we want to

bringing winds and rains to florida. this morning, more than half the sunshine state under a state of emergency, as the storm heads up the coast with soaking rains. the cincinnati zoo is reopening its gorilla exhibit today with a higher re-enforced barrier. this comes ten days after a 3-year-old boy climbed into the enclosure and fell into a shallow mote. a special response team shot and killed the endangered gorilla to protect the boy. a prosecutor announced on monday he will not take charges against the child's mother. let's begin with our first look at o.j. simpson in years. the nfl hall of famer appearing in a new mug shot. natalie has more on that. >> simpson is 68 years old and eight years into his prison sentence. a new mug shot showing what one of the most infamous criminals in america looks like now. >> reporter: this morning, a new photo of a familiar face. an older, grayer version of a smiling o.j. simpson. the new picture, the most recent

mug shot of simpson from the lovelock correctional center in nevada, where he has been locked up for eight years. the mug shot, part of a routine practice to keep updated information on inmates. now 68 years old and wearing his prison issued uniform, simpson has not been pictured in a mug shot since 2013. the once beloved nfl star is serving a sentence of up to 33 years for a 2007 incident at a las vegas hotel. simpson was found guilty in 2008 of criminal conspiracy, kidnapping, assault, robbery and using a deadly weapon. the hieisman trophy winner coul be paroled in 2017, after completed a mandatory, minimum, nine years of his sentence. the photo comes as his long-time friend and former police officer ron ship is speaking out. saying simpson is in torment today. adding that, i hope one day, he actually be rid us of all the

taken from her at the mall. it happened in the blink of an eye. the brazen kidnapping caught on newly released security camera images. the boy's mom said the suspect coziy eied up to her. >> so polite, nice, calm, energetic. >> reporter: prosecutors say what was done yet was anything but. the 32-year-old accused of grabbing the baby and running. hunter briefly looked away to tend to her other child, a 2-year-old. >> i turned for a second. when i realized it was really happening, it was like my heart could burst open at any moment. >> reporter: security video shows the suspect walking away quickly, climbing up the stairs two at a time and leaving the mall. the abduction sparking an amber alert and a frantic search. five hours later, police say they found the baby in the woman's home. >> no apology, nothing? >> reporter: she is facing several charges, including

the biggest culprit? loud music, from headphones to clubs and concerts. all these can contribute to permanent damage, to auditory nerves that can lead to hearing impairment later in life. the results prompting these researchers to sound the alarm, claiming the only solution, prevention. dr. natalie azar is an nbc news medical editor. she's here with advice. 12% of young people are doing things that put them at risk for hearing loss and it's not temporary loss. >> we're calling it risky hearing behavior. we'll talk about some of the specifics in a moment. once there is damage, either to the auditory nerve, that's the nerve that carries the electrical impulse to the brain, or the little hairs inside the cochl cochlea, inside the inner ear, once damage is done to those, it's permanent and irreversible. >> do you have to be exposed over a long period of time for this to happen? >> so the degree of hearing loss can be associated with how loud

the sound is and, of course, the duration of exposure. a sudden loud sound, like explosion, can also cause that. >> let's talk about your advice. ear buds, good thing to be careful with. >> really careful. any time you're putting anything in the ear canal, it's not the best thing in the world. the ear bud can actually increase the amount of decibels from seven to nine. you want the noise cancelling earphone. find out which are the best. >> some of the devices we're listening to, a phone or ipad, can pack a withith whallop. >> anything above 85. technically, 80 to 85. a motorcycle is 95 decibels. the loudest your mp3 goes is 105. the recommended rule, something called the 60/60 rule.
