became the first ever to seize the nomination of a major political party. >> chuck, perhaps not surprising, bernie sanders didn't give her moment last night. he didn't urge his supporters to get behind her. there's this meeting at the white house tomorrow. i guess we'd all like to be a fly on the wall if that room, what's going to happen and what will happen right after that meeting. >> i don't know if it is going to happen right after, but i think there is a feeling in the democratic party to give bernie sanders a little bit of space, give him a little bit of respect. there is one more week of the primary season and i've talked to folks close to both the white house and clinton that there is a feeling, look, if sanders really wants to go through to the d.c. primary, give him the week. no sweat off of their back. but i think what he's going to learn is that if he carries this on too long, then there will be some public urgings. and then maybe you won't get that committee spot you really want in the senate. there is -- they do have one piece leverage over him. he likes being a senator. so the senate democrats can force his hand. >> this is a rather ginger

exercise, helping someone dom terms. you've got campaign staffers devoted, the candidate himself has poured himself into this race. >> you need to bring in some shrinks. right? losing is really, really, really hard business but he's had two months to learn how to lose. he's been mathematically eliminated for months. so i am still bewildered by the tenderness with which the party is treating him. it's over. if trump weren't such a hot mess in this current news cycle i think there would be a lot more pressure on him to get behind her. trump may regain strength. he's sort of like a storm over the sea. he may regain strength and. capable of doing real el haharm her and he'll have all bernie's attacks to use. >> but hillary clinton running against donald trump versus hillary clinton running against bernie sanders, the comfort she has running against trump. she believes in her mind more than half the country is going to believe what she says about

his words were misconstrued. "i do not feel that one's heritage makes them incapable of being impartial." trump insisting he's done talking about it but his critics aren't. jeb bush demanding his former rival retract his comments, not defend them. house speaker paul ryan backing trump's candidacy, just not his words. >> i don't think -- claiming a person can't do their job because of their race is sort of like the textbook definition of a racist comment. but do i believe that hillary clinton is the answer? no, i do not. >> reporter: majority leader mitch mcconnell delivering his own rebuke. >> i think it is time for him to look like a serious candidate for president. >> reporter: trump overnight dismissing the gop critics as sore losers. >> they have to get over it. they shouldn't be so angry for so long. >> reporter: still standing by his man -- chris christie. >> i know donald trump. i've known him for 14 years. and donald trump is not a racist. >> reporter: overnight rnc chair reince priebus calling it a

great victory speech saying it was exactly the right approach. trump campaign aides tell me that donald trump is now full steam ahead focused on hillary clinton and the general election that beginning friday he will hit four battleground states in four days -- virginia, florida, pennsylvania, and new hampshire. matt and savannah? >> peter alexander, thank you so much. chu chuck, if you read donald trump's statement yesterday, it wasn't exactly backing off what he said about the judge but perhaps the dialing done or saying, all right, i'm going to move on to placate everybody who's freaking out right now. is this the best republicans can expect on this issue? >> probably. he doesn't like to apologize. somebody read the statement to jeff flake, the republican senator, saying, i guess he's walking back. his response was -- keep walking. you're not done walking back. he didn't apoll guys. he just simply said i'll move on and i'll stop talking about it. but then of course he does this

lengthy statement, says he's not going to talk about it anymore. in the speech he doesn't talk it, but in the middle of takes an interview from sean hannity where he talks about it. >> this headline says, "i'm with racist." it is a chastising headline for paul ryan, the speaker of the house, despite all the controversial things that donald trump has said saying he continues to say he'll vote for him. is this going to start to be a tough headline for a lot of republicans? >> it already is. i think that paul ryan isn't being held to as harsh a standards as other republicans. lots of republicans have endorsed donald trump. >> but he's the face of the republican party. >> he's also seen as the future of the republican party. i think that he is paying a higher price than anybody. mitch mcconnell endorsed him well before paul ryan did but i think it speaks to just this gushing wound in the republican party. the truth is our hearts are broken that we're seeing a party

that rights of -- and a lot of us have been a part of and worked for for 20 years sort of ripped apart by someone who's made not one, not two but is now in three racism scandals. >> really quickly, mark kirk, senator from illinois, in a tough re-election battle there. unendorsed. can you think of another unendorsement in history? if anyone can, chuck, it would be you. >> no, i can't. i go back to i think trump is three or four weeks to sort of one more time try to prevent this sort of last-minute panic or run. by the end of the month if he's down, 10, 12 points in the national polls, if the fund-raising isn't going well, you still might see -- it is a long shot -- some semi-serious chatter of trying to stop him at the convention if the month continues as badly as the last 72 hours. want to turn now to a tragic hit-and-run crash in michigan. five bicyclists are dead, several other hospitalized after

a pick-up truck slammed into the group without any warning. nbc's gabe gutierrez is in cooper township, michigan, just north of kalamazoo. gabe, good morning to you. >> reporter: matt, good morning. police say the 50-year-old driver's in custody but has not been charged yet. overnight authorities said that they had gotten several calls reporting the pickup truck driving erratically just minutes before the deadly crash. it was chaos. >> multiple bikers down. >> reporter: confusion. cyclists run off the road. this morning investigators in western michigan are trying to piece together what led to this deadly crash near kalamazoo. >> i've never seen anything like this in my life. >> reporter: one witness says this blue pick-up truck swerved into the group before he could warn them. >> that's what i seen a bunch of bikes hit the front of his truck and couple of them flew. >> reporter: nine cyclists hit, five killed. the our four were rushed to the hospital. police say callers reported the pickup truck driving

erratically. >> the police were alerted to a blue pickup truck in the approximately 30 minutes leading up to this accident. >> reporter: after the crash, police say the driver fled on foot but was later arrested. a neighbor says she first thought the truck had hit a tree. >> the front of the truck is completely demolished. so i figured it was just pieces of the truck. i see i'm picking of up pieces the bike. >> reporter: the prosecutor says this area is once again in shock. on february 6th six people were killed when an uber driver allegedly went on a shooting spree in kalamazoo. now more heartbreak. >> i just wish that we had more of an opportunity to maybe get our feet under us before we had to do it again. >> reporter: this morning, the cycling community here is mourning the loss of these riders. they were believed to be part of an organized bicycling club that was struck from behind on this road. authorities say that the four survivors sustained serious

injuries and, matt and savannah, the people who were hurt, their identities have not yet been released. back to you. >> gabe gutierrez, thank you very much. breaking news overnight, officials say a bomb threat forced an egypt airplane flying from cairo to beijing to make an emergency landing in uzbekistan. egyptian officials say an anonymous person cause security agents at the cairo airport to say a bomb was onboard that flight. agents then ordered the plane to land at the nearest airport. all 135 passengers were evacuated. the aircraft was searched, no bomb was found. that incident comes nearly three weeks after an egyptair flight crashed in the mediterranean sea killing all 66 people on board. more breaking news overnight. two f-16 fighter jets crashed after a mid-air collision in georgia. the fighter jets assigned to the south carolina air national guard were performing routine night flying operations. the pilots of each aircraft ejected safely. there were no injuries reported. the u.s. air force is investigating that crash.

now back to that chilling surveillance video we showed you at the top of the show. an attempted kidnapping caught on tape. this happened at a dollar general store in hernando, florida. you see the suspect walking over to an aisle where a 13-year-old girl and her mother are shopping. the man then grabs the girl and tries to drag her out of the store. they have a tug-of-war between the suspect and the mother who we're told is a complete stranger. the man eventually gives us and runs away. he didn't get far though. there was an off-duty sheriff's deputy in the parking lot. he took that suspect into custody. now the 13-year-old is charged with kidnapping and child abuse. >> what could possess someone to attempt that with the mother of that child right there? >> and how about that off-duty sheriff's deputy coming right in there? >> unbelievable. fists were flying last night in the game between the orioles and royals in baltimore. this all started in the second inning when the orioles short stop flies out. words were exchanged between him

the santa clara county jail. >> reporter: good morning. this is where brock turner has started to serve his six-month sentence. but the prosecuting attorney on the case says he could be walking out of this jail in 90 days. it is an online and very public shaming. social media sites now with hundreds of thousands of posts calling out star swimmer and once olympic hopeful brock turner for sexual assault. at one point the meme with this picture blocked from facebook only to have the tech giant apologize later and allow the post while hundreds of thousands of others share a powerful letter from his victim. >> this letter that the victim wrote in this case is a game changer. it is one of the most important letters of our generation. >> reporter: the letter saying, i want to show people that one night of drinking can ruin two lives -- you and me. you are the cause, i am the effect. the victim sending a text message to the prosecutor on her

assault case saying, she wants to remain anonymous. >> i don't need labels, categories to prove i'm worthy of respect, to prove i should be listened to. . i'm coming to you simply as a woman wanting to be heard. >> reporter: the letter saying if you think i was spared, came out unscathed, that today i ride into the sunset while you suffer the greatest blow, you are mistake. nobody wins. we have all been devastated. citing the defendant's age and lack of criminal record, the judge wrote up his decision. a prison sentence would would a severe impact on him. i think he will not be a danger to others. >> when you hear that six months, what was your reaction? >> i was upset. absolutely. i definitely thought it was a slap on the wrist. >> reporter: the sentence has triggered a petition to remove the judge, a stanford alum himself, from the bench with over a half a million signatures. >> we think that women deserve the full protection of the laws and we want to put someone in that seat who understands violence against women and is going to protect our daughters

when they're in college. >> reporter: the outrage reaching a fever pitch. an officer of the court told nbc news that they have received several threats against the judge and his family. turner will have to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life. his lawyer is now filing an appeal. matt and savannah? back to you. >> ari melber is nbc's chief legal correspondent. good morning. let's lay the facts out here. the probation department recommended i think about six months. the prosecutor wanted six years. there was a maximum potential sentence of 14 years. so is this an unusually lenient sentence by the judge? >> it is very lenient, shockingly so, when you look at a finding of three sex crime felonies. >> against an unconscious woman. let's talk about this, what the judge has said. he felt that the athlete in this was less morally -- had less

moral culpability because he was intoxicated and said that a long prison sentence would have had a severe impact on him. it does sound as if the judge is being more sensitive to the person who committed the crime than to the victim of the crime. >> i think several of the comments attributed to the judge do suggest that. that's part of what people are finding so outrageous. there is a thing called mitigating factors if the law. people hear about that, and that does go to the assessment. and it is true that the convict, the defendant in this case, didn't have a prior record. but when you go above and beyond the things you can prove and that are measurable and go into saying, well, it would affect this person's life -- yes. well, that's what a felony punishment is supposed to do. >> now there is this effort to recall him. he is up for election but also running unopposed. is that likely to be successful, this recall petition? and should it be? i mean is this a slippery slope? >> under the rules in california it is a very high bar. it would take a lot of signatures and organizing, not

online where this is happening now but through their process. we should be very concerned even with decisions we disagree with for recalling judges based -- one pat a tiat a time. people will always have something they disagree with. >> he went to stanford, got his matchers there, got his bachelor's there. captain of the lacrosse team. is it different to accuse a person because of his pedigree? >> we hear a lot about bias and what it constitutes. i don't know what was in this judge's mind. statistically we know black defendants are more likely to go to jail and be sentenced more harshly for same crime than the more affluent white defendants. that's part of the question people are asking. this case combines the problems

we've had around assault and gender norms on campus and whether women's accusations or victimhood is being taken seriously and it is double over with i think a legitimate set of questions about whether class is coming in here and further causing inequities that make people say this doesn't feel balanced, this doesn't feel fair. >> there are a lot of issues to discuss. ari melber, thank you. let's turn and get a check of the weather from al. >> we're watching a pretty good area of showers an thunderstorms from rochester, new york to haigerstown, maryland. we've got jet stream and upper level low pressure system moving over the region not only bringing showers and gusty winds but temperatures will take a dip. tomorrow morning temperatures in the 40s and low 50s in new york and in the northeast. then temperatures drop, only highs 10 to 15 degrees cooler than average. the rest of the country, slight risk of some strong storms up in the northern plains. plenty of heat continues in the southwest. and that heavy rain continues down in central and

need to leave the house and how long are the lines right now, for real? right now we have the solution. three apps that promise to tell you in real time. even the tsa has a free app. it's got to be the best, right? it is the tsa. this morning before you start packing up, we're putting them to the test to save you the hassle. it's time for takeoff. but hang on. this is what could be greeting you this summer. tsa lines wrapping around the terminal. you've heard the horror stories. >> i got here three hours early. >> reporter: now these three apps claim to take away the stress and get you through the airport in a flash. all free. but do they actually work? let's start with this one called the myflight app. it is crowd sourced information. travelers waiting in line type in how long they're waiting so

you know how long you're going to wait. right now, for example, i'm at newark, airport, one of the busiest in the country. i have the app up. in this terminal there are two different tsa checkpoints. one of them is 25 minutes right now. a 25-minute wait. but if i scroll over, look at the other checkpoint. zero minutes. i just saved time. so, off i go. and look -- this is incredible right now. no lines whatsoever. i am just breezing right through. this is awesome. and i'm through, just like that. this next app, fleet, goes even further. not only will it tell you how busy the lines are, once you're through it will act like your own personal concierge. >> this one is really easy. i typed in my flight information. it is telling me my exact gate and if the airline switches my gate it will pop right up on the screen. but this is the really cool part. see these little purses? you click on that, it tells you all the nearest shopping in case you want to go shopping. i'm more of a food guy.

no problem. there is a food app. see that little sandwich? hit that. say i'm in the mood for froze n yogurt. look. gate a9. take a look. this is telling you on the screen there is a 25-minute flight delay. it is telling me i need to be at the gate in an hour an seven minutes so i know exactly when to leave. this leaves the my tsa app. must shall the most accurate, right? after all, the tsa runs it. here we go. >> the tsa app is saying that the wait time here at this checkpoint is zero minutes but take a look behind me. does it look like zero minutes to you? no wonder the information is wrong. look at this -- the last time it was updated, 12:18 p.m. it is now 3:30 p.m. information is more than three hours old! the minutes tick by. still waiting. and keep on ticking. it's been more than 20 minutes and we're still in line.

has passed away. i saw this coming out of the gym yesterday. immediately called in. within minutes that tweet was retweeted over 2,000 times but it was the work of hackers. the whole thing was a hoax. nfl deleted the tweet and confirmed that roger goodell is in fact alive and well and the commissioner is being a good sport. i don't know why he would because this is not funny. he tweeted, man, you leave the office for one day of golf with former bills quarterback jim kelly and your own network kills you off. #harsh. >> he could have taken a whole different direction with that. >> imagine a family member reading that tweet. franticly calling. >> the hackers wrote it almost exactly how the nfl might write it. >> horrible. >> scary. we all know this very well. you have kids and suddenly that vibrant social life you had -- bye-bye. start canceling lunches, movie

together. about seven years ago, that was such an amazing highlight of my life. >> i loved it there. it was so pretty. >> i don't want to pulse this too much because i still want it to be crispy. i want there to be texture. >> here is the chicken. i want it thin. >> this is great for stress. basically it comes out like this. >> you go to the flour first. >> i go to the flour first. what i like is because that locks in the moisture. then i go straight in the egg like this. this is the coating, the mustard and tarragon. then this goes straight into hot oil. >> that's not going to take long to cook. >> that's it. >> bring it back leer. talk about the sauce. >> this is honey mustard and cider vinegar. we mix those together. >> this smells so great.

taking a like at the headlines -- health officials have a warning about the antidiarrhea medication imodium. according to the fda, people who take high doses of imodium run the risk of serious and potentially fatal heart problems. doctors say some people are overdosing on the drug that has opiate like effects after using it to get high and at least two people have died. officials say imodium is safe when used as directed but researchers recommend restricting over the counter sales of it. a new study is suggesting marriage may help save your life. researchers looked at 25,000 heart attack patients and found those who were married were 14% more likely to survive than those who were single. they also found married patients, on average, spent two fewer days in the hospital after their heart attack.

experts say the results show how important the support of a spouse can be during and after a major illness. a new study finds using a hands-free phone in your car can be just as distracting as using one that is in your hands. tracking drivers' eye movements, researchers found that people who use bluetooth or other hands-free devices while driving focus on a smaller area of the road and they fail to see potential hazards. they say phone conversations trigger a person's visual imagination which can then interfere with the brain's ability to process information. less than a year after it was introduced, keurig is pulling the plug on its cold soda machines. the company is discontinuing the machines and is offering refunds to those people who bought the machines. more than 100 workers will be laid off. it never caught on mainly because of the high price tag of the machine and the soda cause. the carbonated beverage seems to be falling out of favor in america.
