right now at 11:00, nbc10's first alert radar is tracking storms and showers that could impact your lunch hour. i'm vai sikahema. wet weather is moving into your area right now. how bad will it be and how long will it stick around? sheena parveen showing some lightning on that radar. and she's here now with the first aheard neighborhood prast. a close look at conditions across communities in pennsylvania and delaware. >> showing the lightning approaching the philadelphia area right now, in the lehigh valley. it will get closer to the pennsylvania suburbs. if we zoom in, you see all this lightning, around lancaster,

burkes, parts of the lehigh valley, into the allentown area. you see it across 176, 78, near allentown, and where the red is, that shows you where the heavy rainfall is. in this line of storms, which is in fact getting better organized, we can expect 40-mile-per-hour winds, small hail, lightning, and heavy rain. this is approaching upper mon montgomery county where we have lightning strikes developing, upper bucks county and chester county. it will be approaching the philadelphia area in about an hour here, but again, be careful, because we do expect strong wind gusts with these storms, too. as this moves mostly to the east-southeast around 35 miles per hour, west chester can expect it by 11:20. wilmington expecting the strongest by 11:38, and philadelphia closer to noon today. and as we go through the next few hours here, we're going to see conditions deteriorate in the philadelphia area. right now, at 70 in philadelphia.

1:00, expect showers and storms to continue, mid 60s. by 4:00, we'll be seeing clearing from this with highs topping out around 70 degrees today. a cool, windy day with showers and storms in the forecast. mostly the mifl of the day. we'll take a closer lock at the radar and what the rest of the area can expect coming up. >> happening today, philadelphia city council could vote on the soda tax this afternoon. mayor kenny's plan calls for a 3 cent ounce tax to all sugary beverages in philadelphia. there are enough votes to pass the soda tax, but that doesn't mean the mayor's proposal would go through. in the past hour, hundreds of business owners and merchants gathered to oppose the tax. sky force 10 was over the scene where a new bipartisan anti-tax coalition made its public debut. citizens against regressive taxation are focused on defeating the sugary drinks tax and container tax. the money generated would fund a

universal pre-k program across the city. opponents say the tax would hurt businesses and consumers and this isn't a way to go about getting the money. >> they want all these things. but they don't know how to pay for them, so they want to come after your pocketbook, and they want to come after your wallet. when is enough enough? we have to stop this regressive sales tax and every other tax that wants to come out in that building. >> city council is scheduled to meet at 2:00 this afternoon. stay with nbc10 of course and the nbc10 app and we'll let you know what happens later this afternoon. >> sky force 10 was over an accident that sent a car into a house. this is in camden county. the car hit a home near gafrbs road. officials say everyone will be okay and there was minor damage to the home. we don't have word on what caused the accident. >> and police in norristown are looking for your help as they

investigate a shooting death at a mcdonald's drive-through. this happened before midnight on west main street. a witness told us two men were chasing a 24-year-old man and shot him about ten times. he died at the scene. police haven't said anything about a possible motive for the shooting but are asking anyone with information to contact them. and this morning, two philadelphia firefighters were hurt while battling a fire in cobb's creek overnight. they have been released from the hospital. the fire damaged an abandoned barbershop. no one else was hurt. it looks like it will be donald trump versus hillary clinton this fall. clinton won california early this morning, giving her more than enough delegates to secure the democratic nomination. where does that leave bernie sanders and his millions of fired up supporters? tracie potts has that story from washington. >> first time in our nation's

rigged system of superdelegates, we welcome you with open arms. >> trump facing his own defection from republicans put off by his calling a federal judge unfair because his parents are mexican. >> saying his comments were misconstrued are not an apology. >> reaction from capitol hill today. >> he's no racist, and we're going to take the foyt to hillary. >> support from republicans here is mixed, as trump prepared to take on the democrats' last woman standing. and trump plans to go after clinton right away in a speech he planned for monday. tracie potts, nbc news, washington. and now to local races in new jersey's first congressional district. democratic voters handed the incumbent a victory. norcross fought off alex law. norcross won 70% of the vote. norcross will face republican bob patterson in the general election this fall. patterson ran unopposed. >> you'll find more results from yesterday's primaries along with some continuing coverage of the

candidates and delegate totals on the nbc10 app. and we're now hearing more severe thunderstorm warnings in our area. let's go back to nbc10 meteorologist sheena parveen who has more of that. what's happening? >> we just got the severe thunderstorm warning up a minute ago. it is for chester county, parts of delaware county, and parts of new castle county including wilmington. this particular thunderstorm has gotten strong enough to provide damaging winds, near 60 miles per hour. potentially some small hail, and you see the heavy rain show by the red here, and also a lot of lightning. this goes until 11:45. it's right now over parts of parks brg and moving into chester county, coatsville seeing the heavy rain, too, over highland, seeing the worst of it at the moment. that's heavy rain shown by the red. damaging winds and potential for small hail. we're going to keep tracking this as we go through the next 30 minutes to hour. it's going to continue to move

into chester county. all these areas shaded in yellow, west chester, concord, edge mont, all these areas expected to see possibly some damaging winds, including wilmington across the i-95 corridor as we go into the next 30 to 45 minutes. now, this storm is moving to the east right around 35 miles per hour. so if you're in pike creek, expect it by 11:25. wilmington, 11:38, philadelphia, right around 12:00. we have been saying all morning long the storms are going to be moving into the philadelphia area around lunch time, and they're still on schedule for that. if we take a wider view, we have a line of storms stretching from the lehigh valley into chester county now. these are all traveling to the east. everyone will be seeing thunderstorms out of this. they'll be moving through the philadelphia area by noon. trenton closer to around 12:20 and eventually making their way to the shore by about 1:00 p.m. we'll keep tracking these for you in a bit. >> we'll check back in with you. thank you. we're getting an inside look now at a school bus crash involving

students on their way to dorny park for a senior clastrip. you saw the story breaking here at this time yesterday morning. take a look. [ screaming ] >> this is the first look at the very moment a tractor trailer collided with a school bus. several students, a school counselor, and also a bus driver are recovering from minor injuries after this crash on i-78. in northampton county yesterday morning. the bus full of students was on their way to dorny park. >> i saw the 18-wheeler and then i don't even know. my phone, i guess, was still up and it hit us. i went flying. >> the students say the bus was smoking and slowing down just before the truck hit it. most of the students dill continue on to dorny park for their class trip. >> congressman chaka fattah is back in a federal court room this morning as his corruption trial continues. yesterday, his former chief of staff in washington, d.c. was on

the stand. she said it looked bad that the fattahs allegedly kept a porsche in their garage two years after it was sold to a co hft defendant in the case. the co-defendant is accused of bribing the congressman to get a federal appointment. she also testified that fattah's daughter was a paid fund-raiser for his campaign and she got a $10,000 bonus for her role. >> a ride turns tragic for a group of cyclists. a driver plowed into the group, leaving several dead. we'll show you why authorities were warned in advance that something terrible could happen. we'll have that coming up. >> and there's a problem lurking in the water off the gulf of mexico, and it could lead to discomfort for swimmers if you're heading to that area for your summer vacation, we'll tell you what to look out for. >> and we still have a severe thunderstorm warning out for chester county, including parts of new castle and delaware counties. more storms moving through as we go through the next hour or two. i'll show you where they're

we're tracking some severe thunderstorms now, especially in chester county, moving into delaware county, parts of new castle county. this is until 11:45. these counties shaded in yellow. that's the area storms that we're watching. this has some pretty heavy rain, also lightning, damaging winds,

potentially near 60 miles per hour. also some hail with these storms. again, we're going to be watching all the storms tracking to the east, right around 35 miles per hour. i'll show you where they're heading, the timing of them, what you can expect for the rest of the day coming up. >> thank you. >> some international news. two people killed and more than 20 others injured when two speed boats packed with tourists collided off the coast of southern thailand. the crash happened near phuket. most of the passengers were chinese tourists. >> a driver in new york city is under arrest after this wild ride that looked like it could have come straight out of a movie. it started as a traffic stop when the driver made an illegal turn. the silver suv refused to stop. it hit a patrol car. the officers pulled their guns and demanded the driver get out. instead, the driver takes off again, hitting more cars along the way. he was eventually arrested after ditching the car.

>> five bicyclists are dead and four more hurt after they were hit by a pickup truck in kalamazoo, michigan. the driver was found a short distance away and taken into police custody. gabe gutierrez hat that story. >> it was chaos. >> multiple bikers down. >> confusion. cyclists run off the road, and this morning investigators in western michigan are trying to piece together what led to this deadly crash near kalamazoo. >> i have never seen anything like this in my life. >> one witness says this blue pickup truck swerved into the group before he could warn them. >> that's when i seen a bunch of bikes in front of his truck. >> nine cyclists hit, five killed, the other four rushed to the hospital. police say callered had reported the pickup truck driving erratically. after the crash, police say the driver fled on foot but was later arrested. a neighbor says she first thought the truck had hit a tree. >> front of the truck is completely demolished.

i figured it was the truck. >> police say the 50-year-old driver is in custody but has not yet by charged. authorities say the four survivors sustained serious injuries and at least two are in critical condition. gabe gutierrez, nbc news, cooper township, michigan. >> and happening right now, india's prime minister is addressing a joint session of congress. we'll give you a live look from capitol hill. in the past, he had been shunned in washington over religious violence in his home state. he will also have lunch with congressional leaders and he will attend a reception there later today. looks like he's greeting lawmakers right now. >> a group of senate democrats gathered this morning to push for more funding to combat the zika virus. the centers for disease control and prevention says there have been more than 1700 cases so far in the u.s. last month, the senate passed $1.1 billion in emergency funds

to help stop the threat of zika. they say the time to act on zika was yesterday. >> for nearly 350 expecting mothers, being monitored for possible zika infections. and tragically, every day that we do not act, these numbers get worse. >> senate leaders say the house has only passed a bill for $622 million, about half of what they requested to fight zika. the two sides have yet to come together to hammer out a deal. >> if you're heading to the beach down south this summer, this next story might gross you out a little bit. baby jellyfish are causing all kinds of problems for swimmers and surfers in the water, in the waum waters in the gulf of mexico. they're larvae of jellyfish who get trapped between skin. they could cause a serious rash. >> basically like little thousands of little miniature

bee stings that cause the irritation. >> experts say once you return from the beach, it's best to take off the bathing suit and rinse off with hot water. luckily, the junior jellies aren't really dangerous, they're just painful. well, we have strong storms moving in right on type for the area. you can see them here on the radar moving through the allentown area. a large line of lightning here, so these storms are developing and becoming stronger. now approaching the philadelphia area, so if we look across parts of our pennsylvania suburbs into the lehigh valley, there's a lot of lightning with this. all these lightning strikes here we have seen in the thunderstorms moving across milford, reading, pottstown, parts of king of prussia, and across 476 right here on the edge, the leading edge of this, one near abington across the p.a. turnpike, norristown,

phoenixville seeing a lightning strike. a lot developing now and it's going to continue to develop over the next hour or so. we still have a severe thunderstorm warning for chester county, extending through parts of delaware county until 11:45. king of prussia just on the edge of that. coatesville getting out of some of the heaviest rain, but locked into the area of heavy rain and high winds. with any severe thunderstorm, we expect 60-mile-per-hour winds, lightning, heavy rain, and potential hail. that's why these things can be very dangerous. now, as we track this moving to the east 35 miles per hour, if you're in east goshen township, expect it 11:26, upper darby, 11:51, and philadelphia, right around 12:00. so we still expect these storms to be moving into philadelphia, the strongest part of them, right at lunch time, at 12:00 p.m. we'll keep tracking these for you. also don't forget while i'm tracking the storm, your seven-day forecast is at the bottom of the screen. we're still seeing storms in

montgomery and bucks county, near richland, hatfield, this still continues into the lehigh valley, even though some of the heaviest is out of the lehigh valley, reading still seeing heavy rain, still quite a bit of lightning around douglas. that lightning near 476 near richland. again, strong storms and pretty moderate to heavy rainfall near allentown, easton, bethlehem, and holland. again, still watching a lot of this developing, and getting stronger, and that's what we expect to continue to move through parts of new jersey and into delaware. temperature wise, we're not warm outside with the storms. we're kind of cool. 70, philadelphia. 55 now in allentown. that is some rain cooled air there. 66 in coatesville, 69 degrees in vineland. for today, by 2:00 p.m., philadelphia area may still be seeing showers and storms, but then clearing by the evening commute tonight. and we'll be staying dry after that. pennsylvania suburbs by 2:00 p.m., maybe leftover showers and storms, but then quickly clearing by the evening rush. the evening rush even for the

right now, nbc10 first alert neighborhood weather radar is continuing to track severe weather moving into our area. it could affect your midday plans. sheena, the storm is coming. >> yes it is. now we have severe thunderstorm warning extended through the entire philadelphia area. all these lightning bolts approaching philadelphia, all this heavy rain and strong wind gusts. we're looking at damaging winds around 60 miles per hour or greater, and all these counties, all these areas shaded in yellow, that's a severe thunderstorm warning, meaning we could see potentially damaging winds, lightning, heavy rain. we expect, and also potential hail. that severe thunderstorm warning goes until 12:15, includes the philadelphia area and extends into parts of new jersey including mt. laurel, gloucester, and these will continue moving to the east, mainly around 35 miles per hour. again, with these severe storms, 60-mile-per-hour winds are damaging winds. lightning, heavy rain, and also hail. that is right now near

west chester, abington, the p.a. turnpike, limerick, and even some developing around the philadelphia area right now ahead of the stronger line. if we track this line, it's moving to the east, 35 miles per hour. philadelphia will see that line approaching by about 11:45 here. a little bit earlier, speeding up a bit, but we again have one thunderstorm developing over philadelphia ahead of that line. gloucester, 12:10, jackson, 12:41, and that line extends all the way down county in delaware. again, these storms extend from charlestown into norristown, and philadelphia, seeing that one area of heavy rain just developing right over it, right around gloucester city, across 95 here, south philadelphia seeing that heavy rain developing at the moment. we're going to keep tracking this entire system because again, it is moving into all these major cities like wilmington, philadelphia, and even stretching up towards trenton. coming up, i'll keep tracking it

burger king has the internet sizzling. it's called the whopperito. it's got the elements of the whopper wrapped in a soft shell. it's tested at a burger king in hermitage in northwestern pennsylvania. it's also spotted in ohio and also in texas. burger king says the whopperrito is a regional product and right now there are no plans to roll it out nationwide. >> even if your spouse drives you crazy sometimes, there's more evidence that being married may help save your life. a new study of 25,000 heart attack patients reveals married people were 14% less likely to die after the heart attack than those who were single. married people also spend an average of two fewer days in the hospital a heart attack. experts say the findings emphasize the importance of a spouse's support after a major illness.

and we have breaking news just in from the world of tennis. maria sharapova has been suspended for tennis for two years for testing positive for a banned drug, and she says she will appeal the decision. the ruling came from an independent panel appointed by the international tennis federation. the five-time grand slammian announced in january that she failed the test but was unaware that the drug was barred from use in tennis. >> well, as we get set for summer olympics, you can see right here on nbc10, hundreds of athletes from across the country are preparing for a different kind of competitive event. the 2016 transplant games of america will be held in cleveland this year. the games highlight the dire need for organ and tissue donation. also celebrates so many success stories that have resulted from transplants. our next guests are here to share their stories, their story with us.

sarah and steven will travel to this year's transplant games, and we thank you so much. did i say your name right? >> yes. >> i read your story. i'm fascinated by it. our viewers know it. tell us about how you met and came together on this situation. >> well, what happened was i was working for a giant store in philadelphia, pennsylvania, and i beed steven because we both worked for the same country, and as co-workers do, they befriend each other on facebook. and basically, the post that saved my life was one he saw where i was just basically venting on facebook, saying you know, i had a hard day at dialysis. and he saw it, took it upon himself to get tested. >> there is something, what i found fascinating about your e-mail was you just felt -- i don't know if it was a surge, an inspiration, but something came

through you to say go get tested and respond. am i saying it correctly? >> you can kind of read between the lines. if you will, a sense of maybe desperation and tiredness just from going through what she's been through. >> you didn't know each other very well. >> not at all. >> just acquaintances. >> so in just reading it, it touched my heart. and i wanted to do anything i could to help out, and not even knowing what i was getting into myself, and here we are. four years later. >> did it take a full year for you to get tested? i know you had a lot of blood work done. i read in the e-mail, and then finally somebody called and said you're a match. >> started in march. 2012. and we actually didn't get final approval until close to my birthday at the end of june of that year. so it was a good five months. >> sarah, were there other people -- walk me through what happens. are there other people being tested at the same time and whoever is a match -- >> basically what it was is

steven was the only living donor tested at the moment, and basically, you go through rigorous testing, about six months of testing, and if you're a match, everything matches, and -- >> were you surprised that your colleague was a match? >> absolutely. >> did you have any reluctance? you didn't know each other well, or were you so desperate? >> i didn't think it would go past the blood work. i was reluctant. i didn't think it would happen. i was very skeptical. >> she didn't want me to get tested. >> i didn't want him to get tested because i didn't want to put another person through that pain. >> yeah, and you're stepping forward. tell me a little bit about your involvement in the transplant games. >> it started in 2014, the first games in houston for myself. sarah was a little ill, so she's participating this year as well. it's to highlight the fact that organers and recipients can go on to live happy, healthy, vibrant lives and do anythingth
