stranger who randomly attacked a woman in the middle of the day. good evening. >> joggers say they're afraid as this is just the latest in a series of crimes on the popular trail. it comes as city leaders are fighting to keep people safer. >> we are live near the trail. brandon witnesses saw this attacker sort of pursuing this woman. >> reporter: witnesses saw that attacker follow the woman down the trail and then up the steps that connected here to walnut street before cutting her in the forehead. what has people here on edge is that this attack appears to be random as the woman doesn't know who attacked her. we saw philadelphia police talking to bicyclists leaving the trail not far from where the stabbing happened. on the trail below we broke the news to walkers who wondered by the police were there. >> it's scarey to think it

happened. >> reporter: these women live near the trail and walk it often. >> it's terrible. >> reporter: do you feel safe out here. >> not anymore. >> reporter: the 24-year-old woman is recovering at the hospital. she has a 3 inch gash on her forehead. police say a man followed her on the trail to the steps up to walnut street. he then said you don't know anything and cut her. >> it makes me nervous. >> reporter: this attack follows a number of incidents on the trail in the past few months, slo including a sex assault and indecent exposures. johnson released this statement following today's attack. this incident is another painful reminder that we must step up efforts to make the trail safe. we will also advocate for additional police officers to patrol during all hours of the day. >> no one deserves to be in that type of situation ever. we have to be really cautious.

>> reporter: in situations like this the city is urging people to rely on the emergency mile markers which are on this light post and other light posts on the trail. police have not recovered a weapon or taken anyone into custody. live in center city, nbc 10 news. a scarey ride for dozens of passengers on a bus ride from chinatown to philadelphia to new york when the driver was busted for allegedly driving under the influence. this was a picture taken by the woman who was on the bus. the bus driver was stopped after passengers called police for help. the driver was taken into custody and has been fired from his job. that rider posted details of the ride on the review website and it reads in part he drove so crazily that three times he nearly drove into a wall or post and the last time everyone thought we would die because the

bus nearly tipped over. this isn't the first time we've reported trouble with this company. last summer a driver was fired after video showed him texting and driving along the new jersey turnpi turnpike. a 76-year-old woman is in critical condition tonight after she and another woman were hit by a septa bus this evening. the second woman is in stable condition right now. no charges filed tonight. now it has been a big day of endorsements for hillary clinton. >> i am ready to get in this fight and work my heart out for hillary clinton to become the next president of the united states and to make sure that donald trump never gets any place close to the white house. >> within the past two hours elizabeth warren announced her support of hillary clinton in that exclusive interview on

he spoke of the need to address wealth inequality and the campaign finance system but made no mention of clinton. after primary season where he bragged about self funding donald trump is seeking out financial support now for the general election. trump met today with dozens of top republicans including chris christie to get fundraising efforts moving this as the nominee is coming after fire of a report he doesn't pay his bills. it was uncovered 60 lawsuits by people who say trump and his businesses failed to pay them for their work and included hundreds of liens since the 1980s by those who say they were stifd. >> i have a great issue paying my bills on time. if somebody does a poor job i'm not the quickest pay but if they do a good job i pay them quickly. >> the trump campaign is pointing to the fact that the number of disputes pale in comparison to the amount of

business trump does. as philadelphia gets ready to step into the presidential spotlight city council is make tg clear that peaceful protesting is not a crime. they are reinforcing free speech protection ahead of the convention. drew smith explains how this will work and how donald trump fits in. >> reporter: just steps from elected leaders make law in philadelphia it's easy to spot people making their own views known. most are peaceful. >> i'm not going to come up and bother you. >> reporter: ross cod is a demonstrator focussed on religious issues. he knows disagreements happen especially during events like the dnc and sometimes they lead to arrests so he was encouraged that city council is working to decriminalize disorderly conduct making it a fine instead of a trip to jail and today there is clearer protection for the first amendment. >> we will not curb your right to free speech.

chilly night out there but not too cool for dinner outside. it was hoodie wearing weather this eving but a warm up is coming. let's get the latest on what we'll wake up to. >> for that we go to glenn swarts. it's going to be a whole lot colder tomorrow morning than it was this evening. we have temperatures near 60 degrees in much of the area outside the city itself. clear skies and temperatures already down into the 50s. bethleham is 60 degrees and we'll be down to 50 soon. we have clear skies. look at these temperatures, by morning 56 in philadelphia but in some of the suburbs 48 degrees in parts of montgomery county and 45 degrees in parts of the lehigh valley and even 40s in inland portions of new

one tragedy has let to heart break in two communities hundreds of miles apart. police are trying to figure out why a northeast philadelphia woman traveled to florida and allegedly murdered her two children. she is behind bars on murder charges after allegedly confessing to the crimes. authorities say she took her

children to florida near ft. lauderdale to visit a relative. investigators say they found the children 8-month-old and the 3-year-old lying next to each other in a bed. police say their mother held a bed sheet over their mouths until both stopped breathing. >> i just couldn't imagine her doing this. i can't. i can't. >> family members say she may have been suffering from postpartum depression following the birth of her son. a robber gets more than he barringed for in virginia. >> that's thanks to a business owner and a man with a butcher knife and it was caught on a camera right here. a guy walks in pointing a gun at one of the owners but she fought back and took the gun away from her. seconds later her husband comes in the picture with a huge knife and slashes the robber. >> fight with him and me coming.

>> the woman says she thought the gun was fake and she didn't realize it was real until she pulled the trigger. now the bullet didn't hit anybody. police later found the 19-year-old suspect who is facing charges. a university of pittsburgh researcher contracted the zika virus after accidentally sticking herself with a needle. the woman developed systems last week and a blood sample tested positive for the virus. the researcher was free of fever by monday and is back at work. it was the march of the machines on capitol hill today. the fifth annual congressional robotics caucus held in daugz today. a researcher showing after the state of the art drone. it works on its own to perform a number of tasks like counting fruit or recon instructing trees. it's june which means graduation time. >> tonight one group of seniors got a chance to let loose.

kids from the youth hockey foundation and their families celebrated their accomplishments. the president was on hand for tonight's dinner reception. we spoke a graduating senior whether or not says the impact of the foundation goes way beyond the rink. >> people i get to meet because there are a lot of connections so not only can i play hockey but i can use the kex connections to help in my life also. >> a number of graduates have been given scholarship money. lincoln financial if eld is buzzing with football fever but there aren't any touch downs, no quarterbacks, no shoulder pads. philadelphia finding itself in the international soccer spotlight as there are three matches. >> tens of thousands of football fans are coming to watch bringing millions of dollars in economic impact with them.

weekend. there will be some thunderstorms that are going to be brief. not going to be saturday morning. there we are the future cast is dry to start the day. one or two showers early but the main threat comes in the afternoon and these are some pretty strong thunderstorms moving through the area between 3:30 and about 6:00 and then after dinner they generally get down toward the shore. this latest computer model not nearly as threatening as the earlier ones but i'm not sure i believe this. i think there's going to be some strong thunderstorms and some could be severe. the highest risk is from cleveland down to philadelphia and parts of delaware, less of a risk of severe weather at the shore. tomorrow obviously no severe weather. gorgeous day after the cold start. 48 in the morning.

45 in allentown and 48 in eastton. so it's going to be a chilly start but by the time we get into the weekend it's going to be warm. 88 in philadelphia on saturday, 86 on sunday. that one round of thunderstorms, brief thunderstorms, late saturday, at the shore saturday night, i put the symbol right between the two days because i don't want you to think that saturday is going to be a rainy day at the shore. it isn't. it will be cooler with the sea breeze. it has a land breeze on sunday and that's why it will be warmer then. for the ten-day outlook for philadelphia we have a big temperature jump from tomorrow to saturday. remember those brief thunderstorms, a warm but windy day on sunday. wind gusts over 30 miles an hour both sunday and monday. so those temperatures are up there but the wind makes it feel cooler. some showers on tuesday and then we're still back to the low 80s

that sea breeze all day. the storms come in late saturday for most of the area. they're brief but they may be very heavy at the shore. generally comes after 6:00 at night so you can enjoy the beach day on saturday and a land breeze on sunday, gusty winds on sunday despite the fact i'm predicting dry weather. it's going to be warm right at the beaches. >> all right. summer like weekend. >> absolutely. >> we'll plan accordingly. thanks again. >> for everybody here we thank you so much for watching.
