clinton. warren has emerged as a weapon of war against donald trump. she was the only female democratic senator who hadn't yet backed clinton and this morning, just a short distance here at the white house, the two women will meet privately at clinton's home. overnight, hillary clinton's securing the endorsement of another powerful allie. >> i'm going to do everything i can to help hillary clinton get elected and i'm going to do everything that ki to make sure donald trump never comes within shouting distance of the white house. >> reporter: progressive hero, elizabeth warren, fueling spec laying of a clinton-warren presidential ticket. asked rachel maddow if she believes she is commander-in-chief if necessary. warren left no doubt. >> yes, i did. >> issuing an attack on donald trump. >> donald trump is a loud, nasty, thin skinned fraud who has never risked anything for anyone and who serves no one but

effort, a coordinated effort to unify yesterday. it was a big day for hillary. how big with the endorsement from the president and elizabeth warren? >> hillary clinton has arguably had her best ten-day stretch since she launched her campaign. at the same time, trump has had his worst ten-day stretch. so these leaders coalescing around hillary clinton creates a steam for her. i think she is trying to convert voters who don't care about the establishment. she will have a head of steam headed into this weekend. she had a tour de force around her, whether it coninvestigators bernie supporters, which is the tactical thing that needs to occur is a still unknown. >> we heard officials say she is a weapon and war and can take it to donald trump. i know you have your ear to the ground do you think she is a potential vp candidate for clinton? >> i think it depends on your

definition of potential. if you know hillary clinton and people close to her, you know, she's getting to know many of the people that are on the vp short list. she has been getting to know them throughout the campaign. one person she doesn't know well, elizabeth warren. while there is a chance she can get to know each other very well in a short period of time. she has campaigned with tom perez already, she knows people like mike mullen. it is more likely she is going to want to pick somebody she has known for a long time. >> let me bring up that newspaper article. clinton had a good day yesterday. this morning, she wakes up to another article about her e-mails. this one says state department officials in pakistan sent e-mails to cia officials that cryptically referred to drones, which are supposed to be classified. they did so on an unclassified system. it got forwarded to hillary clinton. a lot of information there. what's the bottom line? >> the bottom line is the republican freakout is this on two pillars, one the sort of the

tone and tenor of trump's comments and his candidacy t. second the opportunity, the treasure trove of opportunity to really point to problematic questions about hillary clinton's judgment, whether it's her e-mails, whether it's her conduct and interaction with the clinton foundation and ever since clinton alleged foreign policy speech, republicans over trumps refusal to make a disciplined concerted case about these kind of topics. >> meanwhile, trump waking up to that usa today report that basically says he stiffed small businesses in the past the working man, that's his base. is that going to hurt him? >> it could if it gets turned into a concerted effort. you have to spend a lot of money as a campaign organization to sort of sell that topic to get voters to know that. think of it sort of similar to how ban and romney. very quickly on my coal's point. do you know this ten-day period,

while being intoxicated and encouraged me to participate in the party like they were. i was an inexperienced drinker and party-goer, so i accepted these things as normal. those statements by turner's own techs about acid and drugs and also drawing a response by stanford university which issued statements on what they call stanford's efforts on alcohol responsibility. can ford has devoted significant attention to fostering accountably around alcohol use. it is an ongoing effort as it is on many university campuses. but some students say the school isn't doing enough to prevent sexual assault. according to stanford's own findings in 2014 alone, there were 30 total sex offenses on campus. with graduation on sunday, two groups are planning protests. one demanding that stanford quote release the names of rapists. >> they don't necessarily who all the rapists are, but they do

know of some. we would be safeer as a community if we knew who they were. >> reporter: for brock turner, the question is whether to appeal and risk a new trial and possibly a new sentence. online a petition circulating to recall the judge now has over 1 million signatures. meanwhile, here in the legal community of palo alto, both prosecutors and defense attorneys are arguing that this decision was within the bound of the law and should be respected. savannah. >> all right. thank you very much nmplts other news, a small plane crashed in houston, killing all three people on board. it slammed into a local hardware store dramatic audio from the tower you can hear air traffic pilots to abort the first landing attempt. moments later the tower issued another more urgent warning. >> you might be too high. >> okay. we'll go around then. >> ma'am, straighten up, straighten up. >> ntsb investigators say they

may have approached altitude too soon causing it to stall before hitting the ground. an issue for lawmakers, saying a delay in approving zika is impeding efforts to fight that virus. dr. thomas frieden, the director of the cdc says epidemics can spread in days and weeks and the sooner congress acts the better. the obama administration requested $1.9 billion to fight zika. neither of the administrations request. zika is spread by mosquitos and can cause severe birth desks. to sports the san jose sharks live to see another day in the stanley cup final. they were on the brink of elimination. but they beat the pittsburgh penguins last night 4-2. the pens still lead the series three to two. game six is right here on nbc. >> we mentioned at the top, it will be a somber day in louisville, kentucky today t. hometown of boxing legend

muhammad ali. tens of thousands are expected to attend ali's public funeral this afternoon. they want to pay their respects to the champ and not a preview of what to expect. >> reporter: all right, guy, good morning to you. muhammad ali was an icon, both in and out of the ring. now one week after his death at the age of 74 the greatest of all time will be laid to rest. today the world says good-bye to the greatest. family, fans and celebrities are turning out to honor the boxing legend in louisville, kentucky. with thousands expected to line the streets as the procession makes its way down muhammad ali boulevard and later passing by the champ's boyhood home. >> i am the greatest! >> reporter: titans in the ring with ali, george foreman and larry holmes will be honorary paul bearers, others are former

heavyweight champ lennox lewis and friend will smith. he won ans a core for his portrayal of the american icon. ali died one week ago at the age of 74 will be laid to rest this afternoon at cave hill cemetery. on thursday, an estimated 14,000 people gathered to pay their respects at a traditional muslim prayer service in louisville's freedom hall. on facebook, president obama called ali a personal hero, showing off a pair of boxing gloves, signed by the three time heavyweight champion. >> i have kept this in this dining room the entire time i have been president. >> reporter: at today's public memorial service, ali's wife lani and daughter miriam will speak. former president bill clinton, billy crystal, bryant gumbel are all expected to deliver eulogies him at the muhammad ali center in louisville, i spoke with his son assad. people from all over the world, people from all over the country

let's get a check on the roads from first alert traffic reporter jessica boyington. >> we're starting on the schuylkill expressway where that accident scene is cleared out of the way around girard avenue. we earlier had a crash pushed over into the right-hand shoulder and all of that eastbound traffic starting to see delays. we're doing better. 25 minutes only eastbound from the blue route to the vine street expressway. and also an accident out in norristown on west main street and markley street. katy? people using a popular philadelphia trail is worry for their safety after a woman was attacked on it. it happened yesterday on the schuylkill river trail at walnut street. witnesses told police a man cut a woman across the forehead with a sharp object. officers say they do believe it was a random attack. this reminder, nbc 10 will have live network coverage of muhammad ali's funeral at 2:30 this afternoon. i'm katy zachry. we'll have another live update in just about 25 minutes. now back to the "today" show.

this documentary. we both followed this trial, as did a lot of people, one of which was interesting, when you lost the civil case, you have footage of family and friend backing up trucks. they are basically hiding assets, things like. that. >> it's impossible for what is actually new. there is sort of the last part of the doc part 5 is set in a period of time after the trial, which i think nobody focuses on more than anything else. i feel after the acquittal in 1995, it was on oj. since then, we forget about them. so i think from what they heard, half the documents said i have no idea it was happening. >> when you were making headlines recently because of this interview, because you said i think, tell me if i'm not getting the quote right, marsha clark had nothing in the first choice to prosecute the case, another assistant attorney bill hodgeman was him that may be a statement of fact. let me ask you point-blank, did

you think the prosecutors, your prosecutors, did a good job on the case? >> i think they did an excellent job. >> did they fumble the case? >> mar cha clark is an excellent lawyer. bill hodgeen was the person i pick. ed. when he had his heart problem. that's the thing. >> you didn't need to slam mar cha clark? >> not at all. she's a wonderful person, intense person, obviously, a very good trial lawyer. >> this documentary goes if one particular place that's of interest to me. inside that famous white bronco case, ezra, you actually have interviews with detective lane i believe. take us into those moments for us watching on tv. we think we see a suicidal o.j. driving somewhere with cash, that may not be the case? >> it may be impossible what was going on in only j.'s mind that day. for me, it was as important to document the experiences of everyone around that day from

gil, who you see in the chase, watching, at a press conference, catching it on tv off air to the police and the s.w.a.t. guys that went to his house to the helicopter pilot who found o.j. i think part of what i was hoping to do is show this from a 360 degree perspective of those on the ground that day. that itself not something -- >> do you think he was suicidal on the car? >> i have no idea. >> the themes that raised our shots through the do you meanary. they're shot through the case, in terms of how o.j. embraced race in the middle of the trial. you talk about, ezra, that transition. also the backdrop of l.a. let's talk about o.j. simpson first, how he came along in terms of his relationship with the black community. then it's interesting to hear your perspective on that. >> look. o.j. came from the project and a black neighborhood and i think his life was fundamentally transformed when he went to usc where gil went to school as well. you know, it was a white

enclave, his fumble next to black los angeles t. fact is, right there is where he became ecultureated. he found himself living in bel air, brentwood. because of his desire for fame as a kid, that thrust him into the arms of white america. >> and gil, you mentioned one of the reasons you wanted to be involved in this particular do you meanry because it does really set the case in the context of l.a. >> it is. it's not just about l.a. it's an entire nation in terms of the race relations. as the district attorney, my job was to assist the prosecutors, do we have enough evidence to prove the defendant guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, but it was much steeper, much bigger than. that it was about race. i don't know if anyone saw this story about me reaching out to president carter about a part of my job was to be prepared for every eventuality in the case.

with matt. hey, matt, good morning. >> savannah, good morning, the world knew muhammad ali as a fighter, a humanitarian, many a hero. only a few had a chance to call him dad. i got to sit down with muhammad and ali's youngest son, assad recently paid a moving tribute to his father on instagram. i started by asking him to read a little of that to me. >> you showed many ehow to love the world in ways i didn't know possible. you showed me to be brave in situations beyond my belief. you taught me so much in the last 25 years ago things that will forever be imprinted in my soul. >> it's hard to believe assad ali was born a decade after muhammad ali last stepped foot in a ring. but he had a front row seat, watching his father's undeniable impact on the world, in ways both big and small. >> there was times where back when i was younger, we could be driving down the street, there

would be somebody on the road, the middle of the road, he'd pick him up, take them home, do magic tricks. things like. that my mom would be like. >> you can't pick everybody up. you knew him in a way that we didn'tful you knew him as a dad. tell me a little about that side of him. >> well the biggest thing ability him, he was a huge family man. we shared some good times, specifically, i can remember on i guess around in the '60s, we were sitting chair-to-chair next to each other. there was a lamp on the table between us. there was a fly just wondering around, he snatched it out of nowhere. he just looked at me and says, i still got it. >> look at him. still a great, great presence. >> when you grew up, he was in this struggle with his physicality. what did you learn from the way he handled that? >> you know what i learned is, you watch him even up to his later years, he was a man that never complained, never showed

weak inside, so you can testify tell what days are dark, that kind of person, you knew, he's tough, he's strong. >> did you ever, though, as a son wish you could have him for yourself, in other words, you didn't have to share him with the world? >> no, because honestly, my dad was thrown here for a piger purpose, a bigger cause, for me to want him to myself would have been a selfish thing. >> i don't want to get too personal, but one of the things that comforted me, your mom told me the family got to get to be around him before he passed. can you share anything you said to him? >> you know, i would like what i shared with him is more of a thing i'd like to keep between me and him personally. but what i can say about that room, that was really emotional, powerful, you know, spiritual moment that we all shared with him. i was able to, you know, say my last few words i really wanted to say to him for a while now. no one will ever touch this earth the way you did.
