"nbc 10 news" starts now. right now at 11:00, terror in orlando. new details are emerging about the worse mass shooting in u.s. history, who the victims were, how the police responded to the nightclub shooting and what may have caused the gunman to go on this rampage. good morning. i'm vai sikahema. we are learning more today about how the terror in orlando played out. 50 people died in the shooting. another 53 are wounded. they're searching the home of omar mateen. isis claimed mateen was a soldier. they said he had an ar-50 type

rifle. sarah rosatio is live in orlando with more on today's development. sarah? >> reporter: more than 24 hours after the deadliest shooting in u.s. history. the city of orlando stands united. today while many of those victims are recovering here in this hospital, many other families are still waiting to learn about their loved ones who were killed. today we're learning more about the gunman and we're also learning more about moments after that shooting started. we are now learning more about the people killed inside the club. officials telling us this morning there are 49 victims, the 50th person is the shooter. >> we will not be defined by the act of a cowardly hater. we will be defined by how we respond, how we treat each other and this community has already stepped up to do that. >> reporter: orlando's mayor buddy dyer standing learning more about the evidence and learning more about the shooter,

29-year-old omar mateen. their first priority, identifying victims and notifying family. the shooter was included in the number of victims. they're confirming 48 of the 49 victims only notifying about half of the families so far. a grueling task for investigators and wait for loved ones. mateen pledged his love to isis and he stormed into the pulse nightclub with a handgun and ar-15 style rifle. after he started shooting he held hostages in the bathroom. officers rushing in with bomb vests held mateen at a standoff and used explosives to blow a hole in the wall allowing others to escape to safety. >> the explosive breach did not penetrate the wall completely. we used our armored vehicle, the bear cat armored vehicle to punch a hole in that wall and defeat the wall. so there's a hole in the wall about two feet off the ground and three feet wide.

we were able to rescue dozens and dozens of people. >> mateen came out of that hole dying in a shootout with the police. now the community and nation are coming together in complete shock as we deal with the aftermath of the nation's deadliest shooting. and the fbi tells us they did find a third gun in the shooter's car. they also say that they're going to be looking into that as well. reporting live in orlando. back to you. >> sarah, thank you. meanwhile, families of the deceased are being notified as quickly as authorities can identify the victims. 48 of the 49 dead victims have now been identified. it's been a painstaking process for authorities. the mother of one of the dead said she was texting with her son when mateen attacked. he told her he loved her and later said he's coming, i'm going to die. that was the last text that she got. dozens are in the hospital recovering from the shooting rampage. nbc news reporter janet shamlion

has more on the survivors. >> he was extending his hand. >> reporter: a heartbreaking photo but this morning for tony morerro's family, a picture of pure joy. >> enormous relief to see him. >> reporter: he was shot four times in the pulse nightclub. he's in critical condition but he's alive. >> that's very handy. >> yes, this is my baby here. >> reporter: only hours earlier his mom was among the many desperate family who couldn't find the loved ones and feared the worse. >> i have to find him. please just keep us in your prayers. >> reporter: those prayers finally answered. >> how is he doing right now? >> he's doing good. he saw me. he cried. >> reporter: a day of tears and for the survivors, luck and timing. andrew aisleman left the club 30 minutes before the massacre. >> you lost 20 friends. >> about 10 that are dead and 10 that are injured. >> reporter: gene abraham said he had a gutt feeling something just wasn't right. why did you leave the club when

you did? >> to be honest, i just had a feeling. i was like, you know what, i don't want to be here. >> reporter: a decision that may have saved his life. >> my heart just fell to the ground. >> reporter: angel cologne fell to the ground when he heard the news. his son shot three times. he told a harrowing story. >> he was shooting to make sure they were dead. >> reporter: father and son know how lucky they are. >> god has given you another chance. make life a better way. he goes, i know. i know that. i know. >> that was janet shamlion reporting from orlando. today it's all hands on deck at the trauma center where lives still hang in the balance. the medical teams say they won't lose anymore if they can help it. some more information now about the shooter, omar mateen. the fbi searched his home in fort pierce. that is more than 100 miles from

orlando. agents are reporting they did not find any explosives in his condo. the atf says he bought at least two guns legally within the last week or so. omar mateen's father says he is shocked by his son's actions. >> was your son radicalized in any way that you know of? >> no. no. he was -- he was taking care of his family, going to work. he doesn't have even beard. he doesn't miss work. he was always on time. so i didn't see anything different that he was meeting with some people and until yesterday he was the same. >> mateen's father said he shares the pain of the victim's families and had no idea what his son had planned. a candlelight vigil for the orlando victims is planned at city hall at 6:45. pennsylvania governor tom wolf ordered the flags there lowered to half staff. we just talked to mayor jim

kenney about stronger gun control limits. >> the only purpose for an assault weapon is to kill people, which obviously we've seen. it's very effective in doing that. unless the congress or the states start doing something about it, we're just -- we're chasing our tail. >> kenny says the fbi is doing all it can to stop terrorists from getting their hands on guns. the celebration of pride month will have a moment of silence. thousands gathered from center city to penn's landing for the annual pride parade and festival. celebration mixed with thoughts about the events in orlando. jordan ostrom is a student at montgomery county. he made the sign after he heard the news about the shooting. he reads, philly is orlando, rip pulse shooting victims. >> it's horrible. just the number of people is horrific, and i think it's

something that we need to realize that just because we have marriage equality doesn't mean that our fight for respect is over. >> ostrom says he hopes the philly pride event brings people together to work towards people's safety and security. "nbc 10." philadelphia police arrested the man they say threw a bottle at

first baseman ryan howard. 21-year-old sidney smith turned himself in on friday. he's charged with disorderly conduct. howard wasn't hurt in the incident. tonight a south jersey community will remember former "voice" contestant christina grimmie. grimmie was shot and killed in orlando friday night. she was signing autographs after a concert. it happened several blocks after yesterday's nightclub massacre but has no connection. she grew up in burlington county. while she was a contestant on "the voice" talked about what the support of the school meant to her. >> my high school, my old high school, there are signs everywhere on the walls apparently. they're all voting and they play the songs in the hallways and stuff, like some of my -- the songs that i've done. it's just really cool to have all of that support. >> tonight at 8:45 there will be a candlelight vigil at the marleton memorial sports. the man who shot her then shot

and killed himself. we talked to christina grimmie with another contestant when the two were competing on "the voice" in the spring of 2015 and we are glad that aubra is here this morning. thank you so much for being here. i know this is really hard. even more difficult when you see video of your friend on television. we were shocked to learn about what happened. tell me how you're doing. >> i just -- i'm just in shock, you know? i just feel like it's just a nightmare and i just think we've all -- we were just all family. you know, we spent over a year together, and it's just so heartbreaking when you hear of something like this happening. i've just been in shock. i'm kind of just numb. >> you were obviously competitors on the show, but you were also friends. tell me about your relationship. >> absolutely. >> you mentioned, she's family. >> yeah. i mean, we -- like i said, we got to know each other through

the show for about a year and, you know, it's just -- her and i had talked about how much our -- you know, our work ethic with music was so much alike because we worked very hard and, you know, we spent a lot of times in our room like practicing and getting ready for each week. she was just such a dedicated artist. and she's an amazing artist, an amazing person, an amazing friend to everybody on the show. and, you know, it's just heartbreaking that we had to hear about this. i just -- i don't even know what to say. it's just really heartbreaking. >> well, we thank you for coming in. we didn't have a lot of time. we appreciate your coming in and sharing with us your experience with her, your friend. >> thank you. >> we western you well. be good. >> thank you. now your "nbc 10" first alert neighborhood weather with chief meteorologist glenn

hurricane schwartz. >> certainly a beautiful start to the week. a lot of sunshine across the area. some more high clouds in the lehigh valley than what you're seeing in the live shot in philadelphia, but those are just high, thin clouds. not going to be bringing any precipitation today. the ocean is 61 degrees but it doesn't really matter today. didn't matter yesterday because the wind was blowing out of the northwest. we saw northwesterly winds gusting up to over 40 miles an hour yesterday and today it's still coming out of the northwest, not quite as strong. with near 70 in atlantic city, near 70 inland and that is going to be the story for today. the wind gusts at atlantic city, up to 24 miles an hour. northwesterly wind, northwest wind gusts into 23 at dover. we're not seeing wind gusts

being reported in other parts of the area. so the wind overall, nothing much on the satellite, high clouds. up towards the great lake, that's where it is. that could play a role in our weather over the next couple of days. cooler weather moving in at least compared to what we saw over the weekend. 92 saturday, 90 sunday and temperatures right around the average for this time of the year monday and tuesday. dry for now but not necessarily dry all week. some of us could really use some rain. you see the clouds coming out of the northwest as we go into the night tonight. he will be even a little bit more sunshine tomorrow morning. more moisture coming down in a northwesterly flow. generally on wednesday and that's especially in delaware and in south jersey. that's why we have that in the forecast for those areas and not

others. and of course the bottom of the screen, you can see your own seven day forecast constantly during the weather segments. that continues to be updated. it's not just for philadelphia. for today we're going to be seeing temperatures in the 80s. tomorrow same story. a lot of sunshine, 83 degrees in fox chase, 82 in yardly. tomorrow will be a lot like today. 80 in hattenfield. sea breeze coming in on the jersey shore preventing them from getting to 80 tee can grease. over the next three days we're generally dry in the philadelphia area. little bit warmer on wednesday. suburbs, similar story, not quite as warm as tomorrow as we're getting into the philadelphia. lehigh valley stays dry for the next few days. but look what happens here in the jersey shore.

the latest developments in the investigation into the nightclub massacre in orlando. new details emerging from the investigation. what the presidential candidates are saying about gun control and radical islam. plus, an outpouring of support in a rush to roll up sleeves. the effort underway to help the surviving victims in yesterday's deadly nightclub shooting.

this is "nbc 10 news." terror in orlando. reaction pouring in from across the world. officials are working to notify everyone who was killed as investigators continue to dig into the background of the gunman who professed allegiance to isis during the attack. investigators are gathering electronic and physical evidence, both from the pulse nightclub and the suspect's

home. a former florida police officer who says he once worked with omar mateen described the 29-year-old as unstable and unhinged. the fbi investigated mateen twice about his radical leanings but both cases were closed. authorities said the shooter pledged allegiance to the islamic state in a 911 call during the attack. president obama was just briefed on the investigation and spoke from the oval office a few minutes ago. he says it appears the gunman was inspired by extremist information disseminated over the internet. we are awaiting an nbc news special report with the latest details and we'll bring that to you as soon as it happens. meanwhile, city and state leaders briefed the community on the investigation this morning. the mayor says orlando will not be defined by the action of one person. there's no indication if charges against anyone are possible at this point. >> we have no reason to believe that anyone connected to this crime is placing the public in

imminent danger at this time, but there is an investigation of other persons. we're working as diligently as we can on that. >> the orange county sheriff's said this was a difficult situation for officers who had to see the carnage left behind by omar mateen. and reaction to the largest mass shooting in u.s. history came from the highest levels of the government and organizations. congressional leaders quickly condemned the attack. the president called it an act of terror and hate. nbc news reporter edward lawrence has more on that part of the story. >> reporter: waking up this morning, flags on all federal buildings will be at half staff to honor the victims of the mass shooting. the president was briefed immediately. >> place where they were attacked was more than a nightclub. it was the place of solidarity and empowerment. >> reporter: senator bernie sanders added. >> we have to do everything

humanly possible to prevent this type of tragedy. >> reporter: donald trump took credit for his radical islam claims in a tweet calling for more toughness and vigilance, then defended it. >> if you don't discuss it and describe it properly you're never going to solve the problem. >> reporter: hillary clinton on the "today" show. >> we have to defeat radical jihadist terrorism, and we will. to me, radical jihadism, radical islamism, i think they mean the same thing. >> reporter: vigils were held in cities like austin, texas, and indianapolis and countries like brazil for victims of omar mateen's terror. ♪ o say can you see >> in washington the gay men's choir sang the national anthem on the steps of the u.s. capitol and people gathered at the white house. >> reporter: the fbi director, secretary of homeland security and deputy attorney general briefed president obama about terror links associated with this case in orlando. in washington, edward lawrence,

nbc news. this morning there's new video of the terror in orlando as it unfolded. take a look. this cell phone video was taken the moment the s.w.a.t. team entered the pulse nightclub. you can hear the gunfire unloading like fire crackers. an off duty police officer responded to the shots fired and more officers arrived on the scene. they engaged in the gun battle. the suspect who then retreated -- this is an nbc news special report. here's lester holt. >> and good day from orlando. behind me the crime scene at the pulse nightclub. the scene of that massacre that took 49 lives late saturday night. president obama has just met with his national security team in the oval office. afterwards he took some questions and made some remarks about the tragedy here and the

administration's response. that was on tape. we're expecting to see it in just a moment. while we wait for that, let's go quickly to kristen welker. kristen, do we know the nature of that meeting? >> reporter: these were brief remarks that president obama made, lester. he makes a couple of important points. one at this point they believe the attack was inspired by extremist information over the internet and, number two, at this point there is no evidence that this is a part of a larger plot. now of course he again extended his condolences to the victims in orlando and to all of those who are suffering. lester, as you know, president obama made remarks from the briefing room yesterday. the 14th time that he has spoken in the wake of the mass shooting. lester? >> and omar mateen, as we have reported, had a number of contacts with the fbi.

was on their radar. here is the tape now. >> are we all set? i just had the opportunity to get the latest briefing from fbi director comie as well as deputy attorney general yates and the rest of my national security team about the tragedy that took place in orlando. they're going to be doing a more extensive briefing around noon. a little bit afternoon over at fbi headquarters so i will allow them to go into all the details, but i thought it was important for you to hear directly from me. first of all, our hearts go out to the families of those who have been killed. our prayers go to those who have been wounded. this is a devastating attack on all-americans. it is one that is particularly painful for the people of

orlando, but i think we all recognize that this could have happened anywhere in this country and we feel enormous solidarity and grief on behalf of the families that have been affected. the fact that it took place at a club frequented by the lgbt community i think is also relevant. we're still looking at all the motivations of the killer, but it's a reminder regardless of race, religion, faith, or sexual orientation, we're all-americans and we need to be looking after each other. and protecting each other at all times in the face of this kind of terrible act. with respect to the killer, there's been a lot of reporting that's been done. it's important to emphasize that we're still at the preliminary

stages of the investigation and there's a lot more that we have to learn. the one thing that we can say is that this is being treated as a terrorist investigation. it appears that the shooter was inspired by various extremist information that was disseminated over the internet. all those materials are currently being searched, exploited so we will have a better sense of the pathway that the killer took in making a decision to launch this attack. as director comb my will indicate, we see no clear evidence that he was directed externally. it does appear at the last minute he announced allegiance

to isol, but there's no evidence so far that he was, in fact, directed by isol. at this stage there's no direct evidence that he was part of a larger plot. that appears to be similar to what we saw in san bernardino but we don't yet know. this is part of what is going to be important in terms of the investigation. as far as we can tell right now, this is certainly an example of the kind of home grown extremism that all of us have been so concerned about for a very long time. it also appears that he was able to obtain these weapons legally because he did not have a criminal record that in some ways would prohibit him from purchasing these weapons. it appears that one of those weapons he was able to just carry out of the store, an

assault rifle, a handgun, a glock which had a lot of clips in it. he was apparently required to wait for three days under florida law, but it does indicate the degree to which it was not difficult for him to obtain these kinds of weapons. director comie will discuss the fact that there had been some investigation of him in the past that was triggered, but as director comie will indicate, the fbi followed the procedures that they were supposed to and did a proper job. at the end of the day this is something that we are going to have to grapple with making sure that even as we go after isol and other extremist organizations over seas, even as we hit their leadership, even as

we go after their infrastructure, even as we take, you know, key personnel off the field, even as we disrupt external plots, that one of the biggest challenges we are going to have is this kind of propaganda and perversions of islam that you see generated on the internet. and the capacity for that to seep into the minds of troubled individuals or weak individuals and seeing them motivated then to take actions against people here in the united states and elsewhere in the world that are tragic. and so countering this extremist ideology is going to increasingly be just as important as making sure that we are disrupting more extensive plots engineered. we are also going to have to

make sure that we think about the risks we are willing to take by being so lax in how we make very powerful firearms available to people in this country, and this is something that obviously i've talked about for a very long time. my concern is that we get into a debate which has happened in the past, which is an either/or debate. the suggestion is either we think about something as terrorism and we ignore the problems with easy access to firearms or it's all about firearms and we ignore the role -- the very real role they had in extremist views in this kun trip.

it's not either/or. it's at both ends. we have to hit them hard and counter extremism, but we also have to make sure that it's not easy for somebody who decides that they want to harm people in this country to be able to obtain weapons to get at them. and, you know, my hope is that over the next days and weeks that we are being sober about how we approach this problem, that we let the facts get determined by our investigators, but we also do some reflection in terms of how we can best tackle what is going to be a very challenging problem, not just here in this country and around the world. my final thought is to extend our deepest sympathies to the families that are affected and to send our prayers to those who

are surviving and who are in hospitals right now with their family members hoping that they get better very soon, but the meantime you can anticipate sometime around noon that director comie and attorney general. >> we created radical nilistic vicious organizations. one of the groups that they target are gays and lesbians because they believe that they

do not abide by their attitudes towards sexuality. we also know that these are organizations that they can find to take captive women and enslave them and rape them so there clearly are connections between the attitudes of an organization like this and their attitudes towards tolerance, pluralism and a belief that all people are created equally regardless of sexual orientation. that is something that is threatening to them. women being empowered is threatening to them. so, yes, i'm sure we will find that there are connections regardless of particularly motivations of this killer, there are connections between

this vicious bankrupt ideology and general attitudes towards gays and lesbians. and, unfortunately, that's something that the lgbt community is subject to not just by isol but by a lot of groups that purport to speak on behalf of god around the world. >> what are your thoughts about the fact that [ inaudible ]. >> april, i think you know what i think about it. the fact that we make it this challenging for law enforcement, for example, even to get alerted

that somebody they are watching has purchased a gun, and if they do get alerted, sometimes it's hard to stop them from getting a gun, is crazy. it's a problem. and we have to i think do some soul searching. but, again, the danger comes with the usual political debate, the nra, gun control folks says, oh, obama doesn't want to talk about terrorism. and if you talk about terrorism, then people say, why aren't you looking at issues of gun control. the point is is that if we have self-radicalized individuals in this country, then they are

going to be very difficult oftentimes to find ahead of time. and how easy it is for them to obtain weapons is in some cases going to make a difference as to whether they're able to carry out attacks like this or not. and we make it very easy for individuals who are troubled or disturbed or want to engage in violent acts to get very powerful weapons very quickly, and that's a problem. it's a problem regardless of their motivations. it's a problem for a young man who can walk into a church in south carolina and murder nine people who offered to pray with him. it's a problem, you know, when

an angry young man on a college campus decides to shoot people because he feels disrespected. it's certainly a problem when we have more organizations like isol and are doing so very effectively over the internet because we know that at some point they're going to be out of 300 million people, there are going to be some individuals who find for whatever reason that kind of horrible propaganda enticing. and if that happens and that person can get a weapon, that's a problem. >> thank you, everyone. >> that was president obama recorded several minutes ago in the oval office after a meeting with his national security team about the tragedy, the terror attack, the terror investigation he called it there that took

place at the nightclub here in orlando late saturday night/early sunday morning. the president saying this does not appear to be part of a larger plot and there appears to be no indication, that is where he stands now. the president saying we will continue to grapple with not only terrorism over seas but home grown individuals who may be radicalized. i want to go to nbc's kristen welker who was on the north lawn of the white house right now. kristen, is there any indication or discussion of the president visiting orlando? >> reporter: lester, nothing that we can report at this hour, but those types of conversations are undoubt at the timely here at the white house. this has become a painful ritual for this press visiting a community after gabby giffords was shot. he did that in the wake of the newtown shooting. most recently in the wake of

south carolina and san bernardino. i wouldn't be surprised if he visited orlando. we know that he has changed the schedule this week so he can deal with the latest massacre. he's supposed to be on the campaign trail with hillary clinton this wednesday. the white houseworking with orlando to see how they can be of help in that regard. this is unfolding against a very heated political backdrop. donald trump accusing president obama not being tough enough. hillary clinton pushing back. they will both be giving duelling figures. >> kristen welker. thank you, behind me a block away still a very active crime scene, fbi, atf. we see them walking perimeters, searching for evidence. 49 people cut down in the shooting. the 50th casualty, the shooter
