york. >> we look forward to that. more new twists on the investigation of the massacre at the pulse nightclub in orlando, the police taking a close look at the gunman's text messages with his wife during the actual sho shooting. stephanie gosk has more on this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the shooting lasted nearly four hours. we are now learning during that time, in between firing his semi-automatic rifle at innocent club goers, omar mateen was on his phone, posting on facebook, calling and sending text mess e messages, including that exchange with his wife. new images show the quiet horror. survivor s huddled in a bathroo. the shooting at pulse had only just begun. according to a source close to omar mateen's wife, noor salmen, she says she texted just after 2:30 a.m. where are you? do you see what's happening?
7:03 am
no. i love you, babe. what was happening was the deadliest mass shooting in u.s. history. authorities say salmen was with mateen when he bout guns the day before. they were at a warmest and she was with their 3-year-old boy in the toy department. the owner of a florida gun store, lotus gun works say s he refused to sell body armor and ammunition to mateen weeks ago because he was acting strangely. the gun shop owner says he el e eluded authorities but law enforcement sources tell nbc news, they were not contacted. medium, mateen's troubled history continues to surface including school and employment records. as early as third grade, teac r teachers were concerned. one writes, omar is verbally abusive, rude, aggressive, much talk about sex and violence, obsceni obscenities. fifth grade, oppositional, lacks remorse. years later in high school, mateen was charged with battery for a fight with a syoutudent.
7:04 am
this letter mateen wrote explaining the incident was part of a job application with the florida department of corrections exclusively obtained by nbc news. it says the charges were dropped. mateen calls it an experience of me growing up and i learned a big lesson from it. as investigator business try and nail down mateen's motivation, president obama met with families thursday. >> i held and hugged grieving family members and parents and they asked why does this keep happening? >> the survivors are also paying tribute to first responders who saved them, like this man who hugged the officer that pulled him out of the club. >> he came in and had a smile on his face. it was just happiness. i'm so happy. i've been wanting to see the man that took me out of that horrible place. >> the source close to mateen's wife tells us police were here

amendments monday, none of them look likely to go anywhere. >> paul ryan and a lot of republicans tap dancing around donald trump right now. thank you. let's bring in chuck todd moderator of "meet the press." good morning. >> good morning. >> i just listened to your interview with paul ryan. you speak fluent washington. he calls trump a very unique nominee who puts republicans in a very strange situation. and he's saying his members can vote their conscience but he will be voting with the nominee. what do we make of this? >> look, he's acknowledging the obvious, right now, it looks like donald trump is not the most helpful nominee for republicans down the ticket. he knows that every republican is getting close to being every republican for themselves. at the end of the day, he made what he says is the best decision he could make as the elected leader in the house, not necessarily as congressman ryan but speaker ryan and understands every republican may have to
7:09 am
make the best decision that makes sense for their district or their state. look, it's -- you say it any which way without saying, i can't run with donald trump is essentially what he's says. >> wednesday night, donald trump says republicans criticizing him, please don't talk, be quiet. he says if i have to go it alone without the rnc or establishment, i'll be just fine. he was right about that in the prima primaries. is he right about that in the general. >> he's not. i understand why he wants them to stop talking. the more public the divide is, i think the tougher it is for trump to raise any money. right now, he is on a -- he's sort of cramming a little bit trying to raise as much money as he can by the fourth of july by the end of the month and why he's in georgia and texas and arizona rather than swing states because he's in big money communities like atlanta and dallas and phoenix. i'll tell you the money is not coming in very fast, that's the problem. the more you hear ryan and mcconnell and all these other senators wringing their hands
7:10 am
about trump, more donors are wringing their hands. >> and hillary, you think this is significant and has a major ad buy with commercials. why do you think this is an important time to be doing that. >> this is july, you have the summer break and summer holid holidays, the two conventions and olympics in august. this is like one of the important two or three week periods where the race is at the end of june is probably where the race will be on labor day. if you recall four years ago, barack obama unloaded on mitt romney before this convention and set a baseline and romney never really recovered and romney had money to fight back on television. hillary clinton's up all by herself. trump, the republicans, no one's countedering this. she will be up by herself for two weeks. there are negative ads on him and positives on her. it could make it he may be in a hole he can't dig out of.
7:11 am
>> trying to define trump now and lock it in. thanks so much. you can see his interview with house speaker, paul ryan, this sunday on "meet the press." another big story breaking this morning, dozens of u.s. diplomats are breaking ranks with the president calling for air strikes on the syrian government. richard engel is at istanbul this morning. good morning. this seems quite remarkable to have such an open break with the president from his own administration. >> reporter: i think it expresses the deep frustration that is even within the state department about the current u.s. policy in syria. don't forget 400,000 people have been killed in this five year conflict. there is a dissent channel in which state department employees can register their opposition. what's unusual, more than 50, mostly mid-level state department employees choose to use this dissent channel to say they want a different policy, want to see more military pressure put on the assad
7:12 am
government and then that dissent was leaked to the media. it is something of a revolution within the state department. whether it will change u.s. policy seems unlikely. the complaint is effectively this one, that the policy does not prevent assad and russia from killing civilians, thatles pressure is put on assad, this bloodshed will continue. savannah. >> all right, richard engel the latest from istanbul. thank you. back home, disney world now says it will now add more alligator signs at resorts and parks following the deadly attack. and we will hear from the parents. gabe gutierrez. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. disney world has said exactly when they will go up or installed. the medical examiner ruled the toddler died from drowning and his injuries after the father tried to desperately rescue him from the mouth of that alligator.
7:13 am
>> this morning, disney world says it will beef up its warning signs following the horrible death of 2-year-old lane graves. a prayer service in his nebraska hometown, saying words cannot describe the shock and grief, we are devastated. the last related injury was 30 years ago and paul santa maria still carries the scars. >> grabbed my leg and started to thrash me around side-to-side and tried to start pulling me backwards into the water. >> reporter: last year, david hayden from san diego said two alligators tried to chase his son at the resort. >> i'm not from florida and don't know there's alligators everywhere. >> reporter: there are signs warning beachers not to swim but not alligators. and others said not to feed the wildlife and only found one that mentioned alligators. in a written statement disney says we have closed all our beaches and have made a decision
7:14 am
to add signage and we are conducting a swift and thorough review of all our processes and propertocol protocols. she and her husband, patrick, live near the park and photographed plenty of gators there at the travel blogger. >> if there's water in florida, there's gator. >> reporter: they defend disney calling it an accident but clearly struck a nerve of parents across the country. >> the minutes that i couldn't find him, and that poor father, trying to pull that child out of that gator's mouth. >> reporter: the investigation into that child's death conti e continues. a local sheriff says the state wildlife officials have pulled a couple more alligators from the water but so far they have not determined which one grabbed the boy. >> gabe gutierrez, thank you very much. new numbers to report this morning on the zika virus and the number of women in this country who have given wirbirth babies with birth defects tied
