dressed in amish clothing running around the yard here, often peeking out of windows but always acting extremely skittish. and yesterday an anonymous tip led authorities in lower southampton police to this house in feasterville and inside as you mentioned, 12 girls ranging in age from six months to 18 years old were discovered. police say none of them had birth certificates readily available. police say it doesn't appear any of them were in school or registered with the state. and after investigating police tell me the homeowner lee kaplan, we'll show his mug shot here, they say he allegedly sexually abused at least one of these girls. police tell me it gets even stranger from there. they say that the 14-year-old girl he's accused of abusing was gifted to him by a couple in lancaster county, formerly amish, who needed to settle some sort of financial obligation. and police say kaplan fathered at least two children with that young girl.

>> the child gave birth to other children through an inappropriate relationship. >> and do you know who these other children were in the home, these other 12 children? >> we're still investigating that. bucks children and youth are investigating that along with some other agencies trying to identify their genealogy and who the parents are. as far as i know we haven't been able to locate birth certificates. >> multiple times i've driven by this house and seen young girls of various ages, children dressed mostly in amish clothing. often afraid. they would look like once he would come out of the house like the male would come out of the house they would go running into the house. >> and you know, other neighbors are telling me that these girls would usually not talk. they were very scared. some of the other little girls in this neighborhood would come and try to play with them but they would refuse and run back into the house. police are now investigating whether any of those other 11 girls inside the home were also abused. authorities have contacted officials from lancaster county for assistance. they have more experience dealing with cases involving the

amish. and again, all of those 12 girls are now in protective custody. and lancaster county. much more on this developing and very complicated case. for now we're live in feasterville. randy gyllenhaal, nbc 10 news. at this hour, friends, loved ones, and fans are remembering a murdered pop singer from south jersey. this is a live look inside a viewing for christina grimmie. mourners are coming together at the fellowship alliance chapel in medford, burlington county. grimmie grew up in evesham township. people started lining up outside the chapel earlier this afternoon. some were fans who traveled great distances. one fan came from as far away as germany. grimmie rose to fame as a contestant on nbc's "the voice." a gunman shot and killed her nearly a week ago as she signed autographs in florida. >> one person has made such an impact in a community like christina has. today's a day not just to mourn her but today's a day to

celebrate the life that she's had. >> pop star adam levine mentored grimmie on "the voice." he's now paying for the funeral. however, there's no sign he's planning to attend. a shake-up at the chaka fattah corruption trial. a judge had to replace one of the jurors in the middle of deliberations. this morning they had to start all over again. nbc 10's deana durante's outside the courtroom with the latest. >> reporter: it is unclear how far the jury had gotten in deliberations. as we told you yesterday, there was unusual activity in the courtroom. the lawyers spent most of the afternoon in chambers. and if any of the jury members were taken from that courtroom or from that jury room, they weren't able to deliberate. however, this morning a brand new jury with one new member heading into deliberations all day long and not a question from them before they went home for the day. lawyers on both sides are staying quiet about why juror number 12 was replaced. this is the fourth juror to be replaced by an alternate since

the trial began in mid may. the judge instructed the panel to begin all over again because the new juror 12 was not part of the original deliberations. and what work they have done or what happened in that jury room is not being made public. >> the deliberation process is sacrosan sacrosanct. it's seeshltcret. they must be unanimous. they must try to respectfully engage in an exchange of opinions. and really it's nobody's business but that jury's. and judge bartle's doing the right thing here. it's not a public matter. >> reporter: philadelphia defense attorney william brennan is not affiliated with the case but he's tried many trials in county and federal courts. he said the waiting now can be the hardest for all partsies. the jury now has to decide on a 28-count indictment with five defendants. at the heart of the case is if the group acted in the interests of congressman chaka fattah. prosecutors say he stole campaign money and used friends to hide an illegal loan and pay it back. and before the jury was sent to deliberate this morning the

tonight that driver is under arrest. the crash happened around 2:00 this morning as a group of teenagers rode bikes on broad street near wallace in spring garden. police say the car hit two 16-year-old boys who were riding on one bike. officers caught up with the driver nearby on ridge street. they say he appeared to be intoxicated. new jersey state police are investigating a rash of suspicious brush fires in burlington county. the first happened in march in penn state forest. then there was one in april in horton state forest. in may a fire burned in bats river state park. while on sunday there was a brush fire in woodland township. if you have any information about any of these fires, police want to hear from you. in the wake of the tragedy in orlando uber's offering free rides to lgbt destinations in philadelphia this weekend. on uber's website the company said it is deeply shocked and saddened by the recent murders. it said it wants to bring people together and celebrate life and love in all its forms. this weekend you can get a free uber to and from places around

the city that are important to the history and culture of the lgbt community. somewhat related, it is a matter of national security. that's what camden county freeholders are saying about a loophole in federal gun laws. nbc 10 at the victims of terrorism memorial in pennsauken. freeholders were joined by congressman donald norcross, the sheriff's department and police. the group is calling for an end to allowing people on government watch lists to buy guns in the u.s. >> the terrorists are telling those lone gunmen to go and take advantage of our lax gun laws. >> the victims of terrorism memorial was dedicated on september 11, 2002. it has six sides that represent major acts of terrorism that have claimed american lives. new details are surfacing today about events leading up to and during the mass shooting in orlando. coming up at 5:00 we have new video from inside the nightclub as the attacks unfolded.

accident with entrapment. train hit a backhoe. >> ten people dead in two amtrak crashes in less than one year. >> we're going to classify this as a mass casualty incident. >> first the ntsb could have been prevented had the railroad put safety technology on the tracks. the second crash the nbc 10 investigators uncover old technology could have stopped the train from killing maintenance workers. >> on train 89, yes, it would have prevented that. >> amtrak 89 was riding through chester delaware county when it hit a crew working on the tracks. two people were killed. >> nbc 10 investigators have been looking into what happened. and they uncovered a possible reason for this deadly yash. here is investigative reporter mitch blocker. >> we have one level three

walking wounded. one d.o.a. we're going to check the other portion of the track. >> reporter: amtrak 89 was going 106 miles per hour when it hit a backhoe near chester, killing two maintenance workers. joe carter was one of them. >> joe carter paid for the failures of others with his life. >> reporter: carter's family is suing amtrak, wondering why train 89's engineer didn't know the workers were on the tracks. our investigation dug up dispatch records showing amtrak notified other railroads of the maintenance work. dispatch logs show the track in chester was occupied or foul between friday april 1st and monday april 4th. amtrak 89 hit carter and his colleague on sunday april 3rd. >> unfortunately you're always going to have some sort of human error. and nobody's life should be one step away. >> reporter: jed dodd worked on amtrak maintenance crews for seven years. he's now the general chairman of the railroad's maintenance workers union. he told is like amtrak 188 the

amtrak 89 accident shouldn't have happened. that a simple electrical cable put on the track called a shunt would have turned the oncoming railroad traffic signal red, telling trains to stop. >> there were no shunting devices. in fact, amtrak had rubtly stopped using shunting devices out on the track. >> there is no doubt in my mind there was no shupt on that track. >> reporter: railroad engineer alan zarimsky demonstrates how a shunt mimics a train on a tracks. >> it has to provide a direct electrical connection across the two rails. >> they would have known that that crew was there. >> they would have known something was going on on the track. >> reporter: our investigation revealed one possible reason the maintenance crew didn't use a shunt. amtrak changed its training manual in 2015. this is the manual's 2000 version. in it is a section about the use of a supplemental shunting device. it says this instruction requires the employee in charge of covered fouling activities to apply an improved supplemental shunting device to the tracks.

in the 2015 manual this section is gone. >> i do know the shunting devices would have prevented it and if amtrak had properly trained and qualified their employees the shunting device would have been there. >> reporter: amtrak wouldn't say why it removed the supplemental shunting device section from its current manual. but we found it may have been redundant. the north american railroad operating rules, which all railroads are supposed to follow, do include the section about shunting. amtrak officials would not agree to schedule an on-camera interview to discuss the protections in place for maintenance workers. so we caught up with amtrak's vice president of operations at a public event last month. >> i really can't talk about that because the whole thing with the maintenance workers and the ntsb. >> i'm not asking about specifically amtrak 89. i'm asking about the system itself. is amtrak's system set up to protect maintenance workers? >> i'm going to have to let the ntsb -- because everything is intertwined with that. >> as ntsb investigates amtrak's

wall. supporters chanted "build the wall." police had to separate the two groups. trump will travel to houston where he'll hold a campaign rally tonight. house speaker paul ryan isn't urging his fellow republican lawmakers to support trump. instead he says they should "follow their conscience." ryan told nbc's "meet the press" he understands he is in a very strange situation to be supporting the party's presumptive nominee while not urging his fellow lawmakers to do so. but he said trump is a very unique nominee. you can watch the house speaker's full interview with chuck todd on nbc's "meet the pres press". it airs sunday morning at 10:30 right here on nbc 10. meanwhile, about 100 local kids and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities plan to volunteer at this summer's democratic national convention. advocates for the disabled announced the plan in north philly today. part of a youth leadership initiative aimed at highlighting the disabled community. the volunteers will work as hotel and hospitality greeters.

♪ singer meat loaf remains in a hospital in canada tonight after collapsing on stage. he was performing in edmonton, alberta last night. a statement on the 68-year-old's facebook page said he suffered severe dehydration. it went on to say he expects to make a speedy and full recovery. switching gears now, the u.s. air force thunder birds are at the shore this weekend for the ocean city air show. they had a tough time getting here, though. high winds and low clouds yesterday forced them to land at a naval air station in maryland instead of their original destination. they practiced today over the ocean city boardwalk. the ocean city air show runs tomorrow and sunday. this will be the first show for the thunderbirds since one of their pilots crashed in

right now 5:30, honoring the lives lost in the terror in orlando. today flags are at half staff at all state buildings. across new jersey to remember the victims. governor chris christie said the attack represents a deliberate and callous assault on the freedoms we cherish as americans. today we're learning new information about the events leading up to and during the mass shooting sunday. >> as nbc's jay gray reports, this comes as the community tries to find ways to heal. >> reporter: chilling new images. >> it was about 30 of us in the bathroom. >> reporter: as the murderous rampage unfolded all around them. >> the first thing he said was "everybody come out because everybody's going to die." >> reporter: miguel leiva was barricaded inside a bathroom stall at the pulse nightclub. he was shot, and so were dozens around him. of the 30 or so in the bathroom only seven survived.

circumstances would warrant the use of deadly force in apprehension. however public spirited mr. jones's intentions may have been, the results could have been tragic." new information tonight on a story we first told you about back in december. a former soccer coach at a philadelphia private school has been arrested and charged with unlawful contact with a minor. john westfield is free on bail tonight. he worked at springside chestnut hill academy. allegations initially surfaced last winter. he was arrested wednesday and arraigned yesterday. he's due back in court next month. an update now on the worst case of animal hoarding the spca has ever seen in monmouth county. charleen and joseph handrick are facing over 550 counts of animal cruelty. this after prosecutors say 276 dogs were found in their howell home earlier this month. they say the dogs were in relatively good health despite the deplorable living conditions. they are now being cared for at

shelters. the delaware stem academy was supposed to open in two months. instead the school is without a charter tonight. the state board of education voted to revoke the school's charter last night. the board cited low enrollment and uncertain funding. the school was set to open in the fall with a focus on science, technology, engineering and math. camden county workers sprayed suspected mosquito breeding sites today. crews attacked areas along dozen of streets in cherry hill. they targeted standing water, a prime mosquito breeding ground. the county scheduled spraying on an as-needed basis. they are barely out of diapers. but these preschool kids already know where they'll be going to college. look at that cutie. and someone else will be picking up the tab for them to go to college. we'll have that story coming up at 5:00. plus, it's not father's day just yet but one dad is already getting a lot of praise for his performance at a phillies game. coming up, what he had to say about this spectacular catch.

the tributes continue to pour in for the victims of the orlando nightclub massacre. greg zane made 49 crosses one for each victim. they're on display at the orlando health rehab institute. there's a red heart attached to each cross with markers at the base for the community to share their sorrow and support. they also bare the names and photos of each victim. another tribute in washington, d.c. has people on the street stopping to take photos and pay their respects.

in philadelphia's spring garden section. in the wake of the orlando massacre he anticipates a slew of legislation aimed at gun control, and he's not against it. not all of it. zalzman, a husband and father of three girls, says he believes it's a matter of being practical. >> the wrong people shouldn't have access. what are the wrong people? people who are on an active terror watch list. i mean, can it get any clearer? >> someone who we don't deem to be fit to get on an airplane should not be able to walk into a gun store and leave with an ar-15. at the same time it's essential that anyone who is put on a list wrongly have an opportunity to clear their name. >> reporter: republican senator pat toomey of pennsylvania who was in philadelphia today is working on a bill to prevent terrorists from getting guns. democratic senator bob casey was also in philly this afternoon visiting with a.m.e. ministers from around the region. they're observing the one-year anniversary of the shooting at

a major child abuse investigation is centered around this bucks county home. the man who lives there is accused of fathering two children with a 14-year-old girl. this is a story you saw first on nbc10.com. and police say there are more disturbing details. investigators say they found 12 girls inside the old street roadhouse in lower southampton township. the youngest child was just six months old. nbc 10's randy gyllenhaal is live from bucks county with more from police and neighbors about this disturbing investigation. randy. >> reporter: neighbors it will me they'd often see little girls running around, many of them dressed in amish clothing, some of them peeking out of windows, but always looking skittish or scared. yesterday an anonymous tip led authorities to this house in feasterville, bucks county, and inside authorities say they found 12 girls from six months to 18 years old.
