today police released photos of who they believe attacked this restaurant. but they say video of the actual attack is too graphic to make public. good evening, i'm jackie london. >> nbc 10's brandon huffman is live in south philly with how this all happened. brand brandon, it involved a cigarette? >> reporter: a woman asked a group of guys for a cigarette. it escalated into a huge brawl. it played out in geno's steaks where they stopped to eat before a night out. óuz five guysok at the on your screen. this group was outside geno's cheesestea cheesesteaks. the attack was too graphic, but we can show you how one man looked after the attack. >> i got hit in the nose, one in the upper back. >> reporter: he also got hit two

times in the face. he showed us how he looked moments later. patrick still had a faint scar under his eye. the 31-year-old told us he and his wife and three friends went to geno's after a wedding. as they left, one of his wife's friends asked the group of guys for a cigarette. >> one of the guys just snapped. he started yelling and cursing saying, you don't know who we are, don't mess with us. we belong with isis. he got in her face and said, what makes you think i'm joking? he put his hands on her and shoved her across the sidewalk. >> reporter: patrick then jumped in. he said one of the attackers jumped on his wife and her friend, too. patrick says he was really thrown off by the isis remark. >> you can't really take things lightly anymore, because even if you sit there and say it's a joke, it's not funny. >> reporter: police say the group of attackers was last seen in two dark-colored suvs with new jersey license plates. we asked philadelphia police

about the isis claims made by the attackers. officers say at this time they're only investigating this as an assault. the staff over at geno's, they have no comment. live in south philadelphia, i'm brandon huffman, nbc 10 news. to our first alert weather now. we're tracking some storms. as you look live at the nbc 10 first alert radar, you could run into storm activity where you live tomorrow morning and then again tomorrow evening. but the big headline for tomorrow is the heat. we could have a heat wave after steamy conditions on this first day of summer. >> let's go now to meteorologist sheena parveen and the first alert forecast. sheena. >> reporter: we've had two days in a row of 190-plus temperatures. tomorrow would make three days in a row. average high is 84 degrees, so we'll be staying above normal as we go into tomorrow, but that is

also going to come with some thunderstorms. so, again, it could be bordered li -- borderline that we hit 90 degrees. right now our storms are to the north and west, so a little unorganized. this moisture is going to continue to slide in our direction, and we could see showers early in the morning, even thunderstorms, and later in the day. so here's 7:00 a.m. philadelphia, possibly atlantic city and trenton, even points north and west of philadelphia could see some showers and storms earlier than 7:00 a.m. then we go throughout the afternoon. now we're looking at 5:00 p.m. wilmington, atlantic city some more thunderstorm chances in the forecast, but still very warm temperatures before we see the later thunderstorms. we'll take a closer look at the timing of this, plus another round of storms before the week is over. that's coming up. tonight in the nation's capitol, the gun debate is going nowhere. four measures failed tonight in the u.s. senate. >> when literally our enemy is

telling people to exploit these holes to kill us, we've left these loopholes open. >> the measures would inspect the background checks and the use of guns on the terror watch list. there was strong reaction from both sides of the political aisle. >> it intensified the debate and put pressure on lawmakers. but in the end it changed nothing. advocates for tougher gun laws in the wake of the orlando massacre saw another round of congressional inaction. four failed gun control measures. >> what am i going to tell the families of those that are still in the hospital fighting for their lives? >> reporter: the u.s. senate did not have enough votes to push through four measures that would have strengthened gun laws. one would have barred gun sales to anyone on a terrorist watch list. another would have increased background checks for gun show and internet gun sales. the senate deadlocked, largely

along party lines. >> you saw senator after senator leave us with these gaping vulnerabilities. >> reporter: republicans like senator pat toomey said they were too liberal. >> they can put anyone they want on the list. there is no judicial review, there's no kind of review. >> reporter: meanwhile the nra says no law will stop someone like omar mateen. >> laws didn't stop him in boston. laws didn't stop him in san bernardino where you have every type of gone law there is. and it didn't stop them in paris where you can't even own guns. >> they held a rally hours before the vote with the legislation. he echoed a political failure. >> it is the lack of political will that has allowed this to continue to take place. >> this issue a hot topic for the presumptive presidential nominees. after the votes, hillary clinton issued a one-word statement,

"enough." donald trump says he's willing to talk to the nra about the issue. live at the digital operations center, i'm denise nacono, nbc news. the fbi's newly released transcripts show mateen called 911 more than half an hour after the first gunshots. he praised god and pledged allegiance to the islamic state. in three other calls with hostage negotiators, mateen said he was an islamic soldier and told america to stop bombing syria and iraq. he claimed to have explosives in a vehicle outside which turned out to be a law. >> humans are not just statistics. >> reporter: meantime, dozens gathered on the drexel university campus this evening to hold a vigil for the victims of the mass shooting in orlando. students and staff joining together to honor lives lost and those still hospitalized.

and support for orlando is also coming from the jersey shore tonight. hundreds joined the lgbt alliance of atlantic city and mayor don guardian for a wreath-laying ceremony and prayer vigil on the beach. the mayor placed the wreath into the ocean to honor the victims and their families. >> it's sad that 50 years after the civil tax was enacted, we still have bigotry and hatred. people need to have tolerance to love their neighbor. >> reporter: tonight's vigil focused on solidarity with the lgbt community. tonight a philadelphia rugby club is giving blood in a special show of support for that community. >> reporter: the griffins is a gay rugby club. they donated blood at the donation center on spring garden. the guys we spoke to talked about the importance of stepping up for their teammates. >> a lot of our gay teammates weren't able to donate blood to

help out their brothers, their queer brothers and sisters in orlando, so a lot of the straight teammates took it upon themselves to donate blood in their stead. >> gay men are restricted from giving blood if they have been sexually active in the past year. a 20-year-old is charged with trying to grab a police officer's gun at a donald trump rally in las vegas. this is video on saturday where police arrested michael sanford. sanford later told the secret service he wanted the gun to, quote, shoot and kill trump. sanford has been denied bail. with just a month to go until the republican national convention, trump's campaign is dealing with a bit of a shake-up tonight. trump ousted his campaign manager, cory lewandowski seen here on the left. he made news when he grabbed a reporter at a trump event. he also stopped other trump

advisers who wanted him to have a certain look. he resigned afr sending it. he later apologized to trump's campaign after that tweet. new information tonight about a woman found stabbed, shot and left in handcuffs. two women have been taken into custody, one of them shavon armstrong of wilkesbury. armstrong turned herself in on friday. jury deliberations will continue tomorrow in the corruption trial of congressman shoka fataugh. a recording shed some light on

the deliberations. >> the question is, are we at the point where there is a deadlock as opposed to -- that's the issue. >> reporter: the recording appears to be a sidebar conversation with the judge and all the defendants. it comes in the jury room last thursday. but the judge told the lawyers to stay silent on the details. fataugh is accused of taking bribes and averting campaign money to pay off his son's college loan debt. mayor mckinney signed philadelphia's new soda tax into law today. it puts a one and a half sales tax on soda products, regular and diet. some of the tax could be passed on to customers. they already hired a lawyer saying the new tax is unconstitutional. new at 11:00, a community's call for action after a recent rash of problems involving special needs students in philadelphia. nbc 10 in south philadelphia as dozens of parents voice their

tens of millions of dollars coming to pennsylvania residents thanks to a settlement with apple. apple customers who purchased e-books from may 2010 to may 2012 are eligible for payment. it stems from a lawsuit that apple threatened to raise prices after it first offered its ipad for sale. residents could score $16 million total after a $14 million settlement. a federal judge has given the go-ahead for two separate california lawsuits against the coffee giant. the plaintiffs claim starbuck's overcharges customers by systemically serving lattes that are 25% too small based on a recipe it adopted in 2009 to save money on milk. starbuck's says the lawsuits are without merit. a huge shot in the arm for a

philadelphia-based company which is behind the first experimental vaccine for the zika virus. it's been given the go-ahead to test that vaccine in humans. while it will still take time to get approval for widespread use, this is an important first step in helping eradicate a disease that has caused fear around the world and right here at home. inovia pharmaceuticals based in plymouth have gotten the go-ahead from the food and drug administration to try the zika vaccine in humans to see if it's safe. the first trial will involve 40 healthy individuals. it initiated positive responses with mice and monkey, showing the ability to fight infection in humans. >> we just had to adapt late last year to make a vaccine for zika, and most of this year has been spent in getting the vaccine tested in animals. >> reporter: while many labs have been working to do the same, inovio is the first to

make it this far. their ceo says he was personally moved to make a scientific difference. >> i myself, as the father of three young children, i was very moved by seeing those babies with birth defects, microcephaly. >> zika, which infects people with infected mosquitoes, leads to brain damage and muscle weakness and paralysis. the disease spread quickly across latin america and the caribbean. while the virus won't be ready in time for the olympics in brazil, receiving the go-ahead was a start for people who need it. >> you could say it was a triathlon or decathlon, but we won the first leg of this race. >> the studies will start in a couple weeks with results expected by the end of the year. to our weather and while they're dealing with an excessive heat warning out west

that. also at the bottom of the screen, your forecast is always scrolling with our neighborhood weather. we have thunderstorms in the forecast for tomorrow, and as we go into thursday, two rounds of storms this week before the weekend gets here. good news for the weekend. it's looking dry and it's looking hot again, so i think your outdoor plan will be just fine. that's what we have in the forecast so far. right now we're looking back to our north and our west right around buffalo and also south of chicago moving into the cincinnati area. we have two areas of thunderstorms, so it's all part of the same weather system. it will move through tomorrow. we could have two rounds of thunderstorms, too. the most severe of the storms will be staying down to our south, but there is a chance we could see a brief but strong pop-up thunderstorm. the best chance for strong to severe storms, though, does look to be in parts of southern delaware. there's a chance it could try to skim south jersey, and it looks like late tomorrow afternoon or evening. tonight we stay dry, but look how early some of these storms

might move in, anywhere from 3:00 to 5:00 a.m. that would include the philadelphia area. 7:00 a.m. moving off to the shore. not so much delaware just yet. then in the afternoon, 3:00 p.m., we could see a few more developing across the area, then look what happens by 7:00 p.m. delaware and south jersey possibly could be dealing with some strong storms. that's where i showed you that more severe threat across parts of southern delaware. 7:00 p.m. we start to clear out late tomorrow night. we'll see a few rounds of pop-up showers and storms tomorrow, and if we get the rain early enough in philadelphia, we don't have enough sunshine, but if we do, there's a heat wave very close there. wednesday looks nice and dry. thursday is our next round of scattered showers and thunderstorms, some of which could be fairly strong as we go into thursday, so we'll be watching those closely. tomorrow your neighborhood temperatures around 90 degrees possibly, bella vista, fox

chase, landfill 86 degrees. allentown mid to upper 80s but we could see early showers in those areas, dover coming in 87 degrees with those thunderstorms. as we go through the rest of the week, dry wednesday, rain chance with possibly strong thunderstorms thursday. weekend looks good, nice and dry, even as we go into sunday, possibly near 90 degrees. we could see quite a few days next week where we have the stretch of some stormy weather. jim? this story out of florida will have you maybe checking your home for furry intruders. a home security system caught that right there. that was a raccoon falling from the ceiling of a woman's living room, and her neighbor had to cut a hole to find out where all those scratching noises were coming from. that wasn't the end of it. a second baby raccoon was also found up there sticking his head right through the hole. steer clear of that one, john clark.
