our top stories and problems inside donald trump's campaign? his fund-raising is lagging far behind hillary clinton's, that news coming on the heels of the sudden firing of his top aide. we'll talk to mr. trump in a moment. first, peter alexander is at trump tower here in new york. good morning. >> reporter: donald trump says he's not beholden to big money but this morning there's new evidence that shows he faces a significant disadvantage when it comes to campaign fund-raising. he's also trailing badly in the polls. our survey monkey tracking poll shows donald trump trailing clinton by six points. there's a new swing state poll out by quinnipiac that shows in ohio and pennsylvania trump and clinton are basically neck and neck. in the battleground of florida, trump trails clinton by eight points. donald trump's fund-raising is

so poor, it's jaw-dropping. raising $3 million in may and ending the month with barely $1 million in the bank. the kind of numbers that would be weak for a congressional campaign, not to mention a run at the white house. compare that to hillary clinton at a celebrity-studded fund-raising with stars. she outraised trump 9 to 1, ending the month with $42 million on hand. trump's campaign writing checks to a wide range of businesses. more than $20,000 to rent mar-a-largo but not a single cent spent on tv hours. hours after firing controversial campaign manager corey lewandowski, trump downplayed the dismissal. >> he's a good guy. he's a friend of mine. but i think it's time for a different kind of campaign. >> reporter: lewandowski who has agreed to a strict

confidentiality agreement with trump. >> i respect mr. trump. i respect him more so than any other person who entered this race. >> reporter: and ducking repeated questions about his firing. did donald trump have the courtesy so tell you you were fired or did someone else tell had you? >> i had a great conversation with mr. trump. it's been a privilege for me to serve the last 19 months on this campaign. >> reporter: sources close to the campaign say donald trump confronted their father urging him to oust lewandowski. is it a course correction or just cosmetic? some republicans are alarmed by what they see as trump's lack of campaign discipline, reiterating his idea to ban muslims after the orlando massacre and relentlessly targeting a federal judge for his mexican heritage. campaign manager paul manafort now taking the helm. his rivalry with manafort and series of physical

confrontations, grabbing a protester's collar and later a reporter. >> i don't discard people. i stay with people. i stay with a lot of people that are treated unfairly. >> reporter: after lewandowski's firing, one trump aide wrote, ding dong the witch is dead. that aide quit hours later. investigators say michael steven sanford tried to grab a police officer's gun at the event, later telling authorities he wanted to, quote, shoot and kill trump. a law enforcement official tells nbc news that sanford has mental problems. back to the firing of corey lewandowski, he certainly was a lightning rod for a long time, and yet it seemed to take everyone by surprise, including,

perhaps, corey lewandowski himself. >> reporter: that seems to be the case. as soon as there was some news out that corey lewandowski was fired, a statement from the campaign, i called corey lewandowski who answered on his cell phone. he said, hey. he seemed to be in great spirit. i said, did you get fired? what more can you tell me? then the phone clicked. sources within the campaign tell nbc news that in the early hours that this was taking place, there was one described as bedlam that very few people knew exactly what was going on. this morning we're learning new information about the fact that it appears donald trump's three adult children, as we were talking about during the course of that piece, they played some role in this. as you saw, i interviewed corey lewandowski yesterday. i asked him about reports about a conflict between him and ivanka trump's husband, who started to take a larger advisory role in the campaign, but corey lewandowski denied that there were any problems or conflicts between the two. matt and savannah? >> peter, thank you. >> let's talk to the man right

now, donald trump joining us by phone. mr. trump, good morning to you. >> good morning. >> let me talk to you about corey lewandowski. this man has been given a lot of credit for getting you where you are now. he's credited with this whole strategy of let trump be trump. you were on this show during a time when he was under fire for this assault charge. you said, i am loyal to this guy. he has a family. i stick with my people. what do you want me to do, discard him? what now? >> i'm loyal. i still am loyal. he did a good job. i spent much less than everybody else and i beat everybody else. i would stand up at certain rallies and say, i spent far less than this one or that one -- >> but in terms of corey lewandowski. is this personal? is this a political view or philosophy? or did this boil down to something personal? it's been reported your family members, including your daughter, did not want him in the campaign anymore.

>> that's absolutely true. ivanka has great respect for him and so does my family. we like him. hey, matt, i got more votes than anybody in the history of the republican primary. >> you said something. you said, that's absolutely true, that ivanka didn't want him in the campaign. >> what i said -- well, i was reversing it. i said, it's true that ivanka really respects corey and it's absolutely true. she likes corey. and i read all these reports about the children and about, you know, all of this. it's all nonsense. >> it sounds like you're saying everything is great with corey but the undeniable fact is corey has been fired from your campaign. >> we're going in a different direction. i ran the campaign very lean, spent very little money. i won in landslides and corey was perfect for that. we have -- to this day. you saw his interviews yesterday. we have a great relationship but

we're going in a different direction. >> he's the guy that believed in let trump be trump, let him speak his mind and that got you a lot of success during the primaries. does this signal with him out that you're not going to do the let trump be trump anymore? that you're going to change your tone for the general election? >> i don't think so, matt. i think i have to be who i am. i don't want to be a phoney like hillary clinton where she reads stuff written up by high-priced talent. i don't want to be that. i want to be what i am. new polls came out and i'm right there. i'm right with the horrible few weeks i had from the press, the press is treating me unbelievably terribly. with all the bad press i've had over the last couple of weeks, believe me, that's manufactured press, 100%. i've had days where there should be good deals and the press comes out negatively. with all the press, i'm out in the poll. cnn just announced a poll, i'm right there. >> we just mentioned, there are

dead heats. ohio, in fact, is tied. let's talk about another measure is campaign fund-raising. the s.e.c. show you with $1.3 million raised on hand, excuse me, on hand, compared to $42 million in hillary clinton a's war chest. now, you understand money, the importance of money, it helps you mount a professional campaign and it's a sign of whether people are supporting you. how do you explain those lackluster results? >> let me just tell you this. i understand money better than anybody. i understand is far better than hillary and i'm way up on the economy when it comes to questions about the economy. but we have a party that, i mean, i'm having more difficulty, frankly, with some of the people in the party than the democrats because they're just -- they don't want to come on. they will probably eventually come on. honestly, if they don't, it's just fine. i can win it either way. i may be better off winning it

best two weeks of her life. >> all right, donald trump. mr. trump, we appreciate you on the phone this morning. thank you. >> thank you. let's move to the scorching heat wave baking the west, fueling a dozen wildfires across that region. miguel is east of los angeles where two fires are prompting evacuation. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. this is typically when fires lay down, in the early morning hours when crews can make progress. we can smell the fires are on the move as temperatures began to shoot up. overnight, southern california looked and felt like an oven, baking and burning. the west is on fire. new blazes are breaking out every day the smoke-filled skyline seen for miles. >> mandatory evacuation. >> reporter: with hundreds of evacuations in place, this morning more than 3,000 firefighters are battling nine large wildfires.

the golden state is red hot. >> the brush right now is so dry, it's aggressive. >> reporter: fueling the fire is the heat. brutal temps for 15 million people. 123 degrees near palm springs, a new daily record. in phoenix, a blistering 115. firefighters scrambling to dozens of emergencies. >> sounds like it's heat-related. >> reporter: five losing their lives to heat-related illness. many are bicyclists and hikers. not enough water and too much sun. >> they're still up there. >> reporter: with water stations popping up and power grids being tested, the stifling heat wave is packing another punch today. it's the heat and winds that could provide that knockout winds. you may be able to hear the helicopters overhead. this is an active fire fight. they say the conditions today

gunman and what was initially left out. nbc's gabe gutierrez has the latest on that. good morning. >> reporter: for the first time since the shooting, south orange behind me, where the nightclub is back open. investigators are still processing the scene. the fbi reiterating today that authorities have found no evidence to suggest that the gunman was directed by any foreign terror group but, instead, radicalized domestically. this morning the words of omar mateen to a 911 dispatcher sinking in. i pledge of allegiance to abu bakr al baghdadi of the islamic state. in arabic he says, praise be to god and prayers of peace be upon the prophet of god. i'm in orlando and i did the shootings. >> he did so in a chilling deliberate, calm manner. >> reporter: but the redacted transcript omitted any mention

of islamic. paul ryan said editing this is preposterous. fbi releasing an unredacted version. three hours later he identities himself as an islamic soldier and says he has bombs in a vehicle outside. at 4:21 they remove victims. at 4:29 he threatens to strap bombs to victims in the club. at 5:02 s.w.a.t. team storm the building. ballistic evidence shows all victims were shot by mateen and not by friendly fire. >> those killings are on the suspect and the suspect alone, in my mind. >> reporter: among those killed 49-year-old cancer survivor.

week. back on capitol hill to vote on gun legislation, but he is still in the race. that is costing taxpayers. it's also raising fresh scrutiny about his decision to decide to stay in, despite the fact that hillary clinton effectively clinched the nomination weeks ago. senator sanders back on capitol hill monday, surrounded by secret service because technically he's still a presidential candidate. sanders' detail often on display, staked outside his home where they even built a small watch station, and seen during his recent meeting with hillary clinton. >> move to the side. >> senator sanders -- >> reporter: defending the candidate on the trail, like when animal rights protesters tried to rush the stage in may. sanders' decision to stay in the race is costing taxpayers an estimated $38,000 a day for secret service protection. with 35 days until the convention, that could add up to $1.3 million if sanders goes all the way to philadelphia.

>> are you wasting tax dollars? >> reporter: monday he avoided shouted questions on the controversy, first raised by "the washington post." the secret service and sanders campaign declined to comment, but some taxpayers are fuming at the candidate. >> that's a lot of unnecessary spending. >> reporter: whose campaign was railed on wasteful spending. >> because we have the most wasteful, dysfunctional system in the world. >> reporter: while all that is only adding to the pressure from within the democratic party, for sanders to suspend his campaign, top surrogates state defend him. >> i really wish people would not just focus on the secret service part of this, but focus in on the broader service that senator sanders is providing. >> reporter: and the candidate himself, who is calling for changes to the democratic primary process, recently told supporters in an online conference, he has more work to do before bowing out. >> we must continue our grassroots effort to create the america we know we can become.

nbc 10 first alert weather breaking news. good morning, i'm meteorologist bill henley. we're tracking showers and thunderstorms. thunderstorms now pushing just north of atlantic city moving offshore northeast ofç brigantine. those storms are out of the picture for the rest of the day. more likely to see storms develop this afternoon from philadelphia into delaware and south jersey. one heavy storm just to the south of harrisburg, that's a severe thunderstorm. that one will likely fall apart but the threat of more storms developing this afternoon and into the early evening hours is why i've issued a first alert. philadelphia, the suburbs, south jersey, the shore and delaware will be threatened by damaging winds, large hail, gusty winds as well as heavy downpours and frequent lightning. the forecast, we will see sunshine. won't be an all-day rainfall. the temperatures have warmed into the upper 70s in philadelphia, some sunshine in the suburbs, will only warm into the 80s. won't make it into the 90s for the third day in a row.

good morning. i'm meteorologist bill henley. getting breaks of sunshine now heating up and that heat will help fuel showers and thunderstorms this afternoon. we've already seen activity this morning. the last round of showers and thunderstorms this morning just moved offshore north of atlantic city. we're seeing heavy downpours across delaware bay and heading back into cape may county. that heavy downpour could produce a thunderstorm. meantime, the rest of the activity so far this morning is to the west. this afternoon a different story. much more likely to see thunderstorms develop this afternoon and i have issued a first alert for potential for severe weather. those storms between noon and 6:00 can produce damaging winds,
