breaking news, a house fire in philadelphia's mt. airy section. skies force 10 over the scene right now. this is a two-story house on east mt. airy street. we're told everyone inside got out safety and the fire is under control. >> right now at cla11:00, we're tracking chances for heavy downpours and strong storms today. that's why we issued a first alert for most of our area this afternoon. parts of the shore already saw rain and storms this morning, and there could be more later on. here's a live look at cape may, new jersey. good morning. i'm vai sikahema. >> i'm tracy davidson. let's get you updated with meteorologist bill henley. >> a break from the storms right

now, but we will see more activity develop later this afternoon. that's why i issued a first alert for philadelphia, the pennsylvania suburbs, south jersey, the shore, and delaware. from noon to 6:00, this is the time period we're most likely to see severe thunderstorms develop with damaging winds and large hail. heavy downpours and lots of lightning, too. right now, pretty quiet. seeing lots of sunshine, too, from delaware, the lehigh valley, new jersey, the suburbs and philadelphia. also up to 84 degrees in philadelphia. that number will be climbing into the middle to upper 80s, but then we have showers developing this afternoon that's going to bring the temperatures down. it could be with severe weather. right now, sunshine for trenton, philadelphia, and wilmington. showers have fizzled as they have tried to come in since first thing this morning. we saw the last few light showers moving through southern chester county. now sunshine back there. let me show you this, the line of showers moving through south central pennsylvania, those are heavy downpours that are moving our way and could bring us the

heavy storms this afternoon. the greatest threat area has now been expanded into pennsylvania, the philadelphia area, and portions of central new jersey as well. and still encompasses all of delaware and south jersey, including the shore. damaging winds and large hail are possible, but as you go farther to the north, it's less likely you will run into showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon hours. so we'll keep a close eye on the skies this afternoon. and the futurecast really shows it well. i'll have that when i come back in a few minutes. >> thanks. >> now let's take a look at what happened earlier this morning when a mercer county family had quite a scare after they home may have been hit by lightning. police were called to this home in chestnut drive just before 7:00 this morning. the family told them the house was hilt by lightning. no damage visible on the outside and no reports of anyone hurt. we want to keep area seniors cool in the heat of the summer.

the utility company is donating 600 fans to six senior fans. they loaded vehicles at 23rd and market street earlier this morning, with fans that will go to centers in bucks, chester, delaware, muntd gumry, philadelphia, and york counties and later today, the fans will arrive along with information on low-income programs and energy-saving tips. for more tips on keeping cool and to track the storms heading our way this afternoon, make sure you have the nbc10 app. a free download you can get right now on nbc10.com. >> senators on capitol hill rejected another round of gun control measures last night, despite a renewed push for legislation that takes weapons out of the hands of terrorists. the republican-led senate voted down all four gun control bills, two from the republicans and two from democrats. one wanted to bar gun sales from anyone on the terrorist watch list. another proposed tougher checks for internet and gun sales.

connecticut senator chris murphy who authored one of the bills led a 15-hour filibuster last week and spoke late last night about the outcome. >> i'm mortified by today's vote, but i'm not surprised by it. we learned in the months after sandy hook that the nra has a vice-like grip on this place. even when 90% of the american public wants change. >> the six senators from pennsylvania, new jersey, and delaware all voted along party lines. democrats supported the two bills proposed by democrats and republicans backed two less restrictive measures sponsored by their party. >> meantime, protests continue outside of the national rifle association. alt least a dozen proteszers were arrested today. it began late monday and continued throughout the night and this morning. code pink, which vigil, blamed the nra for

blocking legislation on capitol hill. >> new from overnight locally, more than a half dozen shell casings found on the sidewalk in philadelphia's kensington neighborhood. the shooting sent two people to the hospital.shooter opened fire around 1:00 this morning with guns in both hands. both of the victims are in stable condition. no arrests have been made. the sprinkler system is credited with stopping a fire in a center city high rise from spreading this morning. an electrical problem was blamed for starting the problem just before 2:00 a.m. fire crews headed to the 18th floor at 20th and market. flames were extinguished in just minutes. >> now to an update about a woman found murdered in fairmount park. shevonne armstrong faces charges after turning herself in to police on friday. she's accused of killing and robbing 26-year-old tory bryant. a young couple discovered bryant's body week ago this morning. the victim was found shot, stabbed, and handcuffed. >> jurors back in court this morning to decide the guilt or

r robbery and a shooting. they tried to sell a man drugs on saturday morning at 3:00 a.m. he said no and the men pulled a gun and shot him in the leg. a few minutes later, the same two men grabbed a cell phone out of the hands of another man. the victim chased them down, wrestled one guy to the ground and tried to get his phone back. that man drew a gun and shot at the victim and missed and then took off running. >> time now for a check on roads with jessica boyington. >> what are you seeing out there? >> well, we are seeing more than normal in west laurel, new jersey. from route 73 northbound, the off ramp to 295 southbound is blocked right now. that's because of an overturned tractor trailer you can see, completely blocking off the ramp. just at the bottom of the ramp, police activity is there to get the situation cleaned up and the vehicle upright or at least brought out of the way. for right now, none of the access from 73 northbound to 295 southbound. also watching the area bridges,

new this morning, small drones are now cleared to fly if they're used for a commercial purpose, as the federal aviation administration has created a new category with rules for drones, weighing less than 55 pounds.

the rules mean drone operators would be able to fly without special permission. currently, they have to apply for a waiver from rules that govern manned aircraft. a process that can be time consuming and expensive. >> boeing has a new agreement with iran to sell it airplanes. they announced today they signed an agreement with iran air. it's the first major deal with an american company following the nuclear accord last year. the deal could be worth $25 billion. if the deal goes through, the first boeing plane could arrive in iran in october. >> a deadly heat wave is fueling wildfires across several states in the west. the temperatures in some areas are breaking records as flames threaten homes and communities. and today, as miguel almaguer reports, the fire is on the move and the temperatures are shooting up. >> overnight, southern california looked and felt like an oven. baking and burning, the west is on fire. new blazes are breaking out

every day. the smoke-filled skyline seen for miles. >> mandatory evacuation. >> with hundreds of evacuations in place, this morning, more than 3,000 firefighters are battling nine large wildfires. the golden state is red hot. >> the brush right now is so dry, it's aggressive. >> fueling the fires, the heat. brutal temps for 15 million people. 123 degrees near palm springs. a new daily record. in phoenix, a blistering 115. firefighters scrambling to dozens of emergencies. >> sounds like it's heat related. >> at least five losing their lives to heat related illness. many are bicyclists and hikers. not enough water, too much sun. >> got off the beaten path. >> still up there? >> with water stations popping up and power grids tested, now this stifling heat wave is packing another punch today.

and on the fire lines, ritzer the heat and wind that could deliver the knockout blow. >> that was miguel almaguer reporting. first alert issued for storms this afternoon, but no sign of them just yet. not in our area. look at the sunshine, just a few scattered clouds. we saw showers and thunderstorms for much of the area first thing this morning. now it's sunshine. even in the lehigh valley. but storms are likely to pop up as we go into the afternoon. that will bring temperatures down in easton and wilmington, bright sunshine there. but there's a pretty good chance we'll see strong storms develop this afternoon into the late afternoon hours. the threat will continue into the wilmington area. we will see the temperatures warm into the upper 80s. might get closer to the 90-degree mark, if we hit 90, that would be a heat wave. day three, but we may not get there as clouds are already building to the west. right now, sunshine for philadelphia, delaware, the suburbs, in the low 80s.

and at the shore, 82 degrees. and climbing. for philadelphia, we'll see the humid conditions stay with us this afternoon. and this heat and the humidity will help to fuel storms during the day today. we saw storms first thing this morning to the north, as they moved into the allentown area, and a line that moves through cape may as well. we are tracking those first thing this morning when we were on the air. this is what it looked like as the storms raced through cape may. this is a view from the marquis de lafayette hotel. look at the sky lighting up with storms quickly moving through the area. they moved offshore, flooding wasn't an issue, but there was very heavy rainfall, and this morning, we could see a return of similar conditions with also the possibility of large hail and damaging winds this time around. right now, clear for philadelphia and wilmington. we have see scattered clouds. we have seen a few scattered light showers in southern chester county. this is the activity we're

watching closely. thunderstorms firing up in south central pennsylvania. that line of showers expected to move our way, so as the afternoon progresses, this line will be moving in to the area, and we'll likely see showers and thunderstorms that could turn severe anywhere between noon and 6:00. this is 2:00 this afternoon. the futurecast showing some heavy downpours from new castle county in delaware, into salem, gloucester, and camden counties in new jersey. very heavy downpours in the suburbs heading through philadelphia. that line will move toward the shore. that's at 4:00 this afternoon. but we could see some redevelopment, another line moving through the philadelphia area into the early evening hours. by later in the evening, those showers will be pushing out to sea, and the threat of severe weather will be diminishing into the evening hours. but keep an eye on the sky this afternoon. a steamy day. 88 degrees. enjoy the sunshine until the storms pop up and then monitor media outlets, including here at

the students and teachers at chester valley dance academy in phoenixville are putting the final touches on their performances as they get ready for their summer resital. they're dancing to support a brave little girl who was diagnosed with sarcoma, a rare

form of liver cancer, but she's doing well and she's here with us this morning. mia is joined by her mother emily, and cathy, the owner of the dance academy. thank you for being here. tell us about the diagnosis and what life has been like for her. >> it's been a whirlwind since early february, and i'm happy to say she had her transplant on may 24th and she couldn't be doing more fabulous. >> she looks great. cathy, how have the dancers at your school worked to support mia? >> every week, they would get together and we would put together a type of something that we could send to them. a couple of the girls here were in a sewing class, and they made her something. they made her pottery. they just wanted her to know we were there for her, and that we were thinking of her. >> that is so special. mia, you're going to be in fifth grade this year? >> yes. >> this next year. you just finished fourth grade. >> yes, i did. >> tell me how you're feeling? >> i'm feeling great.

we have issued a first alert because of the threat for stormy weather in parts of our area. a live look outside right now center city, philadelphia. it's heating up, the heat could fuel showers and thunderstorms later today. >> for now, plenty of sunshine to enjoy. it's a beautiful afternoon to be out in chestnut hill. look at that, sun coming through the trees. some people are dining alfresco in the sunshine, just prepared -- just be prepared to go inside when the clouds arrive. first alert meteorologist bill henley is here with the forecast. >> tell us about the timing of this. >> this afternoon that we're watching for those storms, so there's still time to get out and enjoy, like people are doing in cape may right now. the storms that rolled through first thing this morning are done right now, but this afternoon, the shore, that's one of the areas that i have included in the first alert for today. it is warming up at the shore. 77 degrees. pretty plent for ocean city and atlantic city. inland, the temperatures are in the 80s. that includes philadelphia,

south jersey, and delaware. these numbers climbing into the middle to upper 80s, and that is fuel for storms this afternoon. i have issued a first alert for philadelphia, the pennsylvania suburbs, south jersey, the shore, and delaware, for storms developing between noon and 6:00. those are showers and thunderstorms that could produce severe weather, damaging winds, large hail, heavy downpours. we could see an inch to an inch and a half of rain within a 30-minute period. and then lightning. we saw a lot of lightning first thing this morning. and that's a possibility again this afternoon. right now, clear skies for allentown, trenton, philadelphia, the shore. seeing those clouds move offshore with no rain in those clouds. the next round of showers are going to be pushing in from the west. we saw some right showers in chester county. now the storms i'm watching are in south central, pennsylvania. those are thunderstorms, not as active as what we saw first thing this morning, but it's moving into very warm, humid

air, so we'll likely see the storms firing up this afternoon. until then, you might as well enjoy the warm, humid conditions and sunshine. 84 degrees in philadelphia. new jersey is into the low 80s right now, and 80 degrees even, look at the sunshine in the lehigh valley. the greatest threat is not in the lehigh valley. there's still a possibility of storms into the lehigh valley and some of the upper suburbs as well. delaware and south jersey, we'll keep a close eye on those areas for those storms to roll through during the afternoon. but there is some dry nice weather ahead, too. a look at that when i come back with the ten-day forecast. >> all right, we'll see you then, bill. >> today, the u.s. attorney general will visit orlando. >> loretta lynch will travel to orlando to meet with police and visit pulse nightclub, the site where 49 people were killed and dozens of others were hurt. and controversy erupts over what the fbi left out of the transcript of the conversations

the gunman had with police in his rampage. the fbi repeated investigators have found nose evidence to find he was directed by a foreign group but was radicalized domestically. gabe gutierrez reports. >> this morning, the words of omar mateen to a 911 dispatcher sinking in. i pledge of allegiance to al baghdadi of the islamic state. more than a half hour after the first gunshots, in arabic, he says, praise be to god and prayers as well as peace beupon the prophet of god. he admits i'm in orlando and i did the shootings. >> he did so in a chilling, calm, and deliberate matter. >> the initial redacted transcript omitted any reference to isis. >> we're not going to propagate any violent rhetoric. >> critics pounced on the selective editinediting. lours later, inpolice released

an unredacted version, calling it an unnecessary distraction. according to the timeline and three other phone calls, he identifies himself as an islamic soldier and falsely says he has explosives in a vehicle outside. by 4:21, police pull an air conditioning unit out of a dressing room window for victims to evacuate. add 4:29, witnesses say the gunman is threatening to strap explosive vests to people still in the club. two law enforcement sources tell nbc news ballistic evident indicates all victims were shot by mateen. >> those killings are on the suspect and the suspect alone in my mind. >> among those killed, 49-year-old cancer survivor brenda marquez mccool. >> she was the mom everyone wanted. >> her son isaiah had been with her inside the club. >> i never thought her life would be ended right in front of my eyes.

>> in washington post, a man named mohammed malik claims he reported mateen to the fbi in 2014 after mateen told him he had been watching videos of a yemen-based imam who helped radicalize the ft. hood gunman. while the fbi does not identify the identity of tipsters, they said they looked into mateen at the time and finding nothing, closed the case. >> that was gabe gutierrez reporting. meantime, a local team of comfort dogs and their handlers are landing in orlando this afternoon to help emergency responders smile after the tragedy. >> six dogs from the tristate canine crisis response team left cherry hill this morning to fly down to orlando. some of the animals are retired seeing eye dogs. others are rescues. they all went through at least two years of training to provide therapy assistance. they specialize in helping with post traumatic stress disorder. they will help emergency workers who are often overlooked after a crisis. >> we know there's been teams

hometown in nebraska. now, the chaos and confusion of what happens when the toddler was attacked and killed by an alligator on disney property is being revealed in newly released 911 calls. kerry sanders reports. >> the fence is new, so, too, are the signs. not only at the grand floridian hotel where lane graves was attacked by an alligator and killed, but also at disney's polynesian hotel and for miles around the seven-season lagoon. this, as the chaos of that night one week ago unfolded in a 911 call by a woman who wasn't reamy sure what was happening. >> 911, what's your emergency? >> grand floridian, please. someone drowning in the lagoon, lake. >> monday in nebraska, the graves family held a wake. blue ribbons handed out to mourners. a group of close-knit family and friends watched a video tribute to the toddler. his father finding the strength to talk about the devastating

loss of their beloved youngest child. online, his parents announced they're setting up a foundation in his memory, losing lane has broken our hearts in the worst possible way, they write. while there is no way to mend our hearts, we can do good work in his honor. >> that was kerry sanders reporting. matthew and melissa graves say 100% of the donations to the foundation will be used to fund different charities. vai. >> a complaint over a milk shake leads to a violent confrontation at a burger king in texas. you can see the attack on the surveillance video from the fast food place in dallas. when a man complained about the milk shake, the 62-year-old employee made him two other drinks, but he was still angry. that's when he started throwing things at her and threatened to kill her. he hopped over the counter and chased her into the back. she was not hurt, but is too scared to return to work. >> today in california, the lawyer for dozens of bill cosby accusers will testify in support

of a victims rights bill. gloria allred supports the measure which eliminates the statute of limitations for sexual assault cases. cosby is accused of molesting andrea constand who worked for temple university alt the time. it happened at cosby's home in 2004. the defense says the contact was consensual. the prosecution says cosby drugged constand so she couldn't give her consent. cosby and his lawyers are expected back in court on july 7th to try to question constand before his trial. today, president obama will visit walter reed national military medical center in washington. the president plans to meet with wounded and sick veterans. this is the president's second trip this year to the nation's largest military hospital. his first visit was in january. >> today, apple is expected to start sending out millions of dollars in settlement money over an e-book lawsuit. apple customers who purchased e-books between april of 2010 and may of 2012 are eligible for payment. this stems from a federal lawsuit that alleged apple

an increasing number of americans are severely near sighted. near sightedness affects about 40% of adults in the u.s. but a new study found nearly 10 million meet the criteria for severe loss. women appear to be at the greatest risk for severe myopia and permanent blindness. prior research showed problems with vision in children as well, which some experts believe may be linked to less outside time in natural light. >> it's the time of where millions of us will be pooling off in pools, oceans, and risk. that means a higher risk for

swimmer's ear. britney talks to a doctor about how to treat and prevent this painful. >> summertime and swimming, the two go hand in hand, and that unfortunately brings on a common reason for patients to see ear, nose, and throats doctors. >> we see peak incidents of it in the summertime when there's a lot morph people headed to the pools and the lakes and waterways. the warmer the weather, the higher the instance we see of this particular problem. >> unlike an invection of the middle ear, he said swimmer's ear happens when bacteria grow in the ear canal. >> when water in here, it gets around wax or irritates the ear canal. the ear canal swells. that's when you start to get small cracks in the tissue which serves to harbor infection. >> it can start off with mild symptoms but escalate to pain, itching, redness, and drainage. >> if the drainage persists for more than a day or they see swelling of the ear canal, we

say it's time to seek attention. >> over the counter ear drops can help treat the infection, but in some cases, the doctor says prescription ear drops are needed. >> there are several prescription ear drops that can be prescribed that are treated with antibiotics as wells a t r steroid. >> keep the ear dry. the half and half solution of one part vinegar, one part rubbing alcohol can be put into the ear to help dry it out. you can also use a hair drier on the low setting, about 12 inches from the ear. >> britney glazer reporting. vai. >> well, it's going to be an intense weekend of biking, running, pswimming for thousands of competitors in fairmount park for the 12th annual triathlon. more than a race for some people. steve brown became a triathlon coach for the leukemia and lymphoma society's team in training back in 2006.

the same year he was diagnosed with a slow growing form of leukemia. steve is here with michael, worldwide vice president of corporate affairs and chief communication officer for johnson & johnson, who are sponsors of the triathlon. thank you both for being here. steesk steve, you competed in marathons. ironman competitions. what's so special about your involvement with trirock philadelphia? >> well, first of all, i have been involved with trirock on many levels since the inception of the race, it's a local race, i knew the owners and helped to create and define the race. what makes it so meaningful for me is we bring a group with leukemia and lymphoma society each year, athletes who maybe taking a bite out of the triathlon for the first time and they're raising awareness for blood cancers just like mine, and i get to share my passion and love for the support in our hometown. >> it's amazing. i did a 22-mile hike two saturdays ago. i was so -- i was beat down just

doing that. i can't imagine for somebody who had the diagnosis, tell me what that's like to compete and be active after you have had the diagnosis for leukemia. >> it's even more rewarding. i think i came from an endurance background. i had done a number of events in iron mans and triathlons leading up, and the finish becomes sweeter when you're doing it after the diagnosis because you realize, hey, you can come through that. you can weather the storm, come through to the other side. you can still perform and compete. it's rewarding. >> michael, tell us what is in store for this weekend's triathlon and johnson johnson & johnson's involvement. >> it's great, first of all. really is an opportunity for us to marry our commitment to the community and we have over 500 participants in this year's philly trirock, and it's just an example of us kind of marrying the whole culture of health with the ability to really give back to the community. >> yeah.

the ball game in the afternoon. the temperatures soared into the 90s in south philadelphia. today, no game. more likely though to see storms this afternoon in south philadelphia. and fueling those storms, the heat 84 degrees in philadelphia. look at delaware, the suburbs, lehigh valley, even south jersey and parts of the shore have reached into the 80s during afternoon, we'll see the temperatures that have been running a little cooler in the suburbs. peak in the middle to upper 80s this afternoon. just as showers and thunderstorms start to pop up later today. 82 degrees right now, and new hope is 85 degrees. the showers that develop will bring the temperatures down. you can see some high clouds in north wildwood, new jersey, this morning. bright sunshine there. the high clouds are moving offshore. the storms first thing this morning may very well repeat this afternoon. those storms are way offshore. but the area of concern that i'm watching right now, look at the showers and thunderstorms firing up in south central

pennsylvania. that's a very heavy rainfall, and now quite a bit of lightning. the rain is coming down at a rate of almost 3 inches an hour in parts of this area of thunderstorms. and those storms are on the move. you can see the motion over the last hour as they move to the east. that brings them in to play for parts of southeastern pennsylvania, into delaware, south jersey, philadelphia, and some of the suburbs as well. and that's most likely to happen this afternoon. the futurecast shows at 3:0030 this afternoon, the storms on the move into new jersey, delaware, and south jersey. they'll move offshore and we could see another round of storms during the late afternoon and early evening hours. 6:00 this evening, this is when our first alert expires, but there's still likely to be wet weather in area. so keep alert and keep an eye on the. first alert for philadelphia, the pennsylvania suburbs, south jersey, the shore, and delaware from noon to 6:00 today, for
