storm clouds. >> let's stay down the jersey shore right now. live look from the cape may camera. you see the waves are a little choppy out there, but calmer than an hour ago. changes conditions based on where yo live. >> that's why we have your first alert neighborhood weather. >> if you live anywhere in pennsylvania, you have not seen any of this so, yes, depends where you live, if you're in delaware or much of south jersey, you have seen pretty bad storms roll through. current radar, pennsylvania is fine at the moment, looking at new jersey and delaware, dealing with the rain, but the most severe storms have already moved offshore. we have some heavier rain in sussex county, south of seaford, a lot of lightning, but, really, sussex county seen big improvements as well as kept county and delaware, and big improvements because the strong to severe storms earlier have moved further south. longneck seeing rain as well as

louis, and in cape may county, where we are a tornado warning, potential tornado. we do not have the confirmation on that, waiting for it, but there is light rain left over in cape may county, sliding up to atlantic city now and ocean county and lighter rain. the heaviest of it is now offshore. the most severe thunderstorms have now moved out of the area, but we also have more back off to the west. now, this is still pretty far off to the west. what you see right where i'm circling, just west of washington, watching this area as we go through the rest of the evening because some models are, in fact, picking up on this trying to move it through parts of delaware and south jersey tonight. timing on that coming up. >> all right. right now, we want to go to telemundo 62 reporter, christian, in cape may county, the intensity changed since you've been there. what's it like now, christian? >> reporter: wildwood residents took quite a punch from mother

nature, and now a closer look at the damage, like this scene here found off of garfield and this building here is a public works building, and as you can see here to the left, that's the roof. i just spoke to one of the workers here from that department, and he told me there were plenty of folks here all day working up until 2:00 in the afternoon when they wecht home for the day. fortunately, nobody was home, nobody was injured, but as you can see, damage is major. he told me that the -- luckily, wind blew east ward, why the roof is now on the vacant property opposed to if the winds blew the opposite way, they have other machinery, what we're told all the machines used to clean up the beach, that's where everything is stored here. we've been walking around some of these neighborhoods, driving around, and i can tell you that's there's plenty of trees and debris out on the streets. we'll drive around getting foot amg for you and we'll be back with some of those in a bit

the jury read the guilty verdicts on 22 counts against him, and when he left the courthouse, as you saw, he did not have much to say about the guilty verdict. he emerged calm and smiling. >> confer with the lawyers, figure out what the next steps are. >> reporter: offering little comment on what the jury said he did. the trouble began when he ran for mayor of philadelphia, witnesses said his campaign was unorganized and earthquakely ran out of cash. what money he had in the account, prosecutors said, used to pay down his son's college loan debt and mounting debt for people who worked for him like a south jersey printer and law firm. when the campaign for mayor needed money, he took an it legal loan from a wealthy friend and used co-defendant to pay it back, laundering through a private company. the cash used to repay the loan came from a nonprofit meant to help students go to college, but went into the banking the of the

student loan executive, the man who granted the loan. the defense said there was no evidence he knew about the loan or had anything to do with repayment. the jury sided with the federal period of time and found he defrauded a mortgage company claiming a car sale provide funds to secure a mortgage for a vacation house. the car was never sold, and he drove it. he accepted bribes from a friend who paid his tuition bill, agreed to buy the car, but never took it from his garage. now, the codefendants are scheduled to be sentenced in october. we did reach out to the fattah legal team, they are not granting interviews today. live outside the federal chou courthouse, nbc 10 news. >> a statement now from the congressman. he says, this is an extraordinarily difficult day for me and my family, a jury decided that based on the evidence presented to them that i'm guilty of charges presented

by the government. he goes on to say while today's outcome is not what we hoped, i expect our nation's judicial system and thank the people of the second congressional district for the honor of serving them. as we mentioned, he was not the only one on trial. >> jury came back with a mixed verdict for four codefendants. peterman guilty on all counts like bribery and bank fraud. the jury found philadelphia's businessman report brand guilty on all charges, quicking him of conspiracy to commit wire fraud. >> jury returned a split verdict for bowser, chief of staff, found guilty on five of 21 counts she faced. former fattah aid was found guilty on some counts against her like wire fraud and falsification of records. our team coverage continues with lauren mayk.

>> you have reaction from the prosecution once the verdict came down. what are they saying? >> reporter: keith, they are pleased. they have been working for this for a very long time, and they say the key to the success was having the jury hear from people that they called insiders to the criminal activity. >> we're going to ask for jail time. >> u.s. attorney in philadelphia talking about the next step in the case against congressman fattah guilty on ul counts against him. >> hopefully our elected officials in philadelphia and elsewhere hear today's message loud and clear. >> reporter: as they gathered outside the courthouse, federal officials have multiple agencies spread a lesson and message. >> we hold our public officials and staff to a very high level of trust. >> reporter: saying he breach that. >> notably and contrary to the congressman's public per son that as a champion of education, fattah was convicted of stealing

caterble funds and federal grant funds used to benefit children in the community. >> reporter: asked whether he lost a primary but months to go on the term should step down, the u.s. attorney deferred. >> this trial is a referendum on his conduct, and other persons will determine what the appropriate steps for the congressman will take. it's not my call. >> reporter: now, i contacted the house ethics committee today, and they have no comment on this. one other interesting note, though, is that they served as a super delegate in the dnc happening here in philadelphia next month. i contacted the pennsylvania democratic party to ask about this, and they tell me that the verdict today don't change anything. he's a super delegate because he's a congressman. unless he resigns, nothing changes. live in old city, lauren mayk, nb 10 news. >> thank you.

the prosecution's kiss, former federal prosecutor joining us. >> howard, likely he'll appeal, what are chances of a successful appeal? >> well, next step for the congressman and sad saga for him is sentencing on october 4th, and after he is sentenced, he would then appeal to the third circuit court of appeals, appeal as a matter of rights, and files appeal based on legal errors made at the trial, and rulings that the judge made he feels are against him or improper conduct the prosecutors may have engaged in in the course of the trial. all of that is briefed by both sides, and then it goes to the third circuit, they review it, oral argument, and a decision on appeal, appeals are generally uphill battles for federal criminal defendants, but there's a chance. that's the next shot at this point. >> i was asking about the

six dogs from the canine crisis response left cherry hill this morning. some are retired seeing eye dogs, others are rescues. they all specialize in helping post-traumatic stress disorder. they help workers who are overlooked after a crisis. new at 5:00, two philadelphia men behind bars after getting stopped by police with more than 900 pounds of marijuana. they both 23 years old arrested last night after 10:00 facing several charges including possession of a dangerous substance and unlawful transportation of marijuana. maryland state police shows how massive the haul was, box upon box, stacked full and wrapped with marijuana. approximately 938 pounds worth of it. chen and jong were pulled over on northbound exit ramp to route

today. we're inside in the air-conditioning, but some people have to work outside. >> the guys and gals out there on the comcast center in philly, several crews were working, and when it's this hot, the mercury starts to really climb. >> reporter: as the next s skyscraper rises in philly, so, too, does the temperature. the heat is on, especially working hundreds of feet up, closer to the sun's rays. >> i, personally, guys think i'm nuts, i like the sun. i hate the cold. >> reporter: rich is the glass worker. he sees installlation of the window panes, and there are thousands. these guys fight exhaustion going out on a limb, literally, meanwhile, a beam of scorching flames, steam fitters, weld miles of copper and steel pipe. brutal? >> yes, welding, wearing leathers, stuff like that, yeah, real hot. >> reporter: they have to take

today, the senator from maine said she expects the senate to vote on her new proposal. senator collins cosponsored the bill with four republicans and four democrats. mitch mcconnell has not said whether a vote will be held. he received backlash for voting against background checks and sale of guns to people on terror watch lists. a florida state senator running for congress is stoking debate on gun control. republican greg evers is raffling awe an assault rifle, ar-15 to people who like his facebook page saying it's to bring attention to second amendment rights. gun owner and retired police officer is not sold on this as a way to get the message cross. >> i don't think we should attract attention to the ar, any weapon, pistol, or shotgun.

>> to be eligible, you have to be 18, a resident of florida, and pass a background check. the 2-year-old boy killed by an alligator in a disney resort was buried in his hometown in nebraska today. an alligator pulled lane graves into the water tuesday despite the frantic efforts of his father. the body recovered wednesday. the boy died from wednesday and traumatic injuries. look at this video. two menmented for a robbery and shooting at center city. they tried to sell a man drugs early saturday morning at broad and walnut street, refused, and shot him in the leg. a few minutes later, they robbed another man, the cell phone. they tried it get the phone back to the suspect, fired a shot at the victim, missing him, and took off. get ready for takeoff. the white house is cleared the way for small drones to fly if they are used for commercial

purposes. after years of struggling to write new rules, faa created a new category of rules for drones when weighing less than 55 pounds. operators can fly without special permission. right now, you apply for a waiver for rules that govern manned aircraft, which is time consuming and expensive. >> boy oh boy, listen to that. this is from cape may. we showed you video earlier. this is new, shot a short time ago, you can hear the wind, and, in fact, ripped a roof offal building in wildwood. tracking it all, where are the storms now? >> well, good news for cape may, they have offshore now. they moved out. we don't have anymore strong storms moving into cape may for the next few hours. they are off in the atlantic, delaware also is in the clear. now from the very strong and severe storm we saw earlier in delaware.

now only found in sussex county, they are not severe, just heavy rain and a lot of lightning here in sussex county near frankfurther, light rain, south of seaford, a lot of lightning at the moment and close 20 longneck, but in sussx county, there are improvements to what we had earlier this afternoon. we are watching for more storms west. i mentioned we don't have any strong storms headed to cape may in the next couple hours, but later on tonight, models are suggesting that some of what you see off to the west and west of washington could move into parts of delaware and jersey tonight. we have a severe watch in south jersey and delaware. some may be getting trimmed down. it goes into 9:00 p.m., but the worst has moved through, now offshore. here's future weather. as we go over the next few hours, models indicating by

8:30, showers develop east of philadelphia and new jersey and look what happens as we approach 1030 and 11:00 tonight. models have been trying to pick up on storms i showed you west of washington, moving into delaware and possibly towards cape may county again. that's not until 10:00 or 11:00, though. we'll pay close attention to tonight. tomorrow afternoon, nice and dry. temperatures still warm. mid to upper 80s, but thursday, more thunderstorms moving in thursday morning, and we start the day with thunderstorms, and throughout the afternoon. we could have thunderstorms around for the day, and some storms could be severe. here's the thursday storm threat for severe storms similar to what we saw today in delaware and south jersey. the severe risk in yellow and for thursday, that covers majority of the area so a larger portion of our area than what we saw today. we could see winds, lightning,

potentially some hail and heavy rain in the storms on thursday. we'll track that very closely for you. tomorrow, though, nice sun shine in the area, 89 degrees in fox chase. in the lehigh valley, 86 in reading, sunny skies. new jersey, 87 degrees. low 80s close to the shore. if you're in dover, temperatures will be hot, about the upper 80s with sunshine. philadelphia, the jersey shore, we are dry tomorrow. thursday, the storms move in. temperatures will be slightly cooler, low 80s thursday for philadelphia with storms, 77 degrees thursday for the shore, but look what happens going into the weekend. we have a really nice forecast setting up for you friday through sunday. temperatures heating up to 90 degrees, and nice and dry. >> all right. expected to be the number one overall pick in the nba draft by the sixers, but before the professional debut, ben similmons visits "the tonight

heavy winds and rain reeked havoc this afternoon. look at this video from a viewer shot from the safety of inside her home. the winds whipping through the trees as wind fell in the cape may county. a lot of cleanup to do. crews worked to clear away a tree that fell in the middle of the road. atlantic city electric reports more than 30,000 power outages in the area. >> what a difference a an hour makes. a live look now in cape may, it's calmer. no one on the beach, of course, but things are quieter there tonight as storms subsided. from the stronger threats of storms to the south and hot dry weather north and west, conditions are different really depending on where you live. >> that's why we have your first alert neighborhood weather. >> that's right. we have seen such a difference across the area. if you're in pennsylvania, you basically have seen nothing so far other than sunshine and warm

temperatures. all the strong storms confined to delaware and parts of south jersey, although, those strong storms have, in fact, moved out. we are leftover with rainfall, but now we have a few showers popping up here in parts of lancaster and chester county in pennsylvania, near coatesville and providence. watching them closely because models indicated some popup showers, popup thunderstorms before the night is over. i'll show you timing on that in a second. looking the sussex county, delaware, long beach, a lot of lightning, heavy rain, this is really the only section year the shore where we're watching that. back to the popup showers, chester county, you see how quickly they popped up. something we are keeping an eye on. more storms west. you see those squaring up. those are something to watch as we go through the evening. again, models show those moving in. look at the damage reports.

corruption trial. the 59-year-old served in congress since 1995. >> lost the april primary and its bid for a 12th term. we have more on the story. congressman released a statement this afternoon, what did he say? >> reporter: keith, a tone of acceptance calling it an extraordinarily difficult day for he and his family, but respects the judicial system, and that's more than he had to say after leaving court today. >> you have no comment? you've been speaking for months, sir, any reaction to the guilty verdict? >> george trying to get a comment. smiling there, but otherwise did not say much. he said he'd speak with the attorney about next steps. the case centered on efforts to repay an illegal already 1 million campaign loan. prosecutors addressed the guilty

decision today. >> eastern district of pennsylvania, expect their public officials to act with honesty and integrity and expect them not to sell office for personal gape. hopefully our legislated officials in philadelphia and elsewhere hear today's message loud and clear. >> the congressman has not said if he'll appeal right now, set to remain free on bail. sentencing set for october. back to you, keith. >> all right, jim, thank you. more more legal insight into the major verdict, former federal prosecutor, howard bruce cline, joins us. >> how unusual is it for a sitting conman to be found guilty and will he give up the seat before the term is over? >> well, it's highly unusual for a sitting congressman to be found guilty. in philadelphia, go back to the days to myers and ray, and more recently, there's a congressman from stanten island who pled guilty to criminal charges, but

it's highly unusual. it happens once in a blue moon. weather he gives up the seat is a matter for congress. the kwconviction, federal conviction by itself, does not require him to give up the seat. it's up to the ethics committee of the house to decide whether to censure him or vote him out of the house, requiring two-thirds vote, but in the meantime, while he's still there, actually, he's not convicted of a crime until sentenced officially on october 4th, and once convicted, he's not supposed to vote on any measures that come before the house or participate in any committees in vote, although he's actually allowed the house rule, which i think is house rule 23, suggests he should not participate or vote, but does not require it. we have a separation of powers issue here. it's up to the congress to decide that the house of representatives, what they want to do with representative, and, of course, he can resign on his

own and end it if he wants to. >> certainly see just the first glimpse of how much participation he could have in office. continuing to look at that. howard, thank you for the legal experti expertise. >> thank you. >> first congressman to be convicted of the crimes, by the way, in 2013, a republican representative of arizona was sentenced to three years for rag tiers and wire fraud, and that same year, jesse jackson jr. pled guilty to wire fraud, and then in 2009, democratic representative from louisiana sentenced to 13 years on bribery charges. after receivering 11 years, he lost the bid back in april, and state representative, dwagt evans, beat him in that race. we've been asking for reactions to the corruption trial verdicts this afternoon, and we found mixed opinions.

his injuries looked like following the june 11 beating. he says one of the attackers slapped his wife and beat up their two other friends. they released a statement, quote, we as a company do not condone physical conflict, disputes, physical disputes, rather, are not acceptable anywhere and should not go without punishment, end quote. just more than a month to go before the democratic national convention here in philadelphia, and today, the major is talking security in washington, d.c. here's what he had to say about handling potential protesters at the convention. >> what's the sense of a democracy if you can't say what you think and protest what you want when you want to? the destruction of property, harming anyone is out of bounds. that's not the first amendment rights, but saying what you want to say as long as and as loud as you want to say it, we are prepared to allow people to do

that. >> there's a designated protest area across the street from wells fargo center, urging protesters to get permits beforehand. tens of thousands descend on south philadelphia for the democratic national convention at the wells fargo center july 25th-28th. a fair funding formula for all new jersey schools, what governor chris christie is proposing across the state. sweeping reforms that would change how much money schools would receive.

delaware bureau, people living in newcastle have their own grocery store again, a brand new super g market opened this morning along route 9 near the delaware memorial bridge, the grocery store for thousands of people who lost their local super fresh stores when they closed last november. this store probably could have used a few more weeks to

prepare, but store manager says customers shows how badly the store is needed here. >> the community has been begging for a store to be opened, so we made the decision to go ahead and open the store, get an early preview, and work things out as we go. >> residents in the area rely on public transportation so, of course, today, the closest grocery today was four miles up the road in wilmington. meanwhile, uber says it's not going to fight new jersey's attorney general when it comes to drive background checks. a spokesperson says the ride sharing company took part in an amended measure in the state senate giving the attorney general 100 days to decide the type and mt. of criminal background checks for drivers. they had threaten to leave the state with the attorney general requiring finger print checks. back to talk about the weather for the third day in a row, june

how is it out there? >> looks better than it did earlier this afternoon. we had severe storms in delaware and south jersey. if you were in newcastle county, kent county, sussex county, and cape may county in south jersey, you saw the very strong and severe storms this afternoon. right now, we are basically in the clear in the areas, but we're now watching the very fast thunderstorms popping up in parts of chester and lancaster county, developing in pennsylvania, seeing heavy rain from this westchester as well, and red shows the heavy rain. as we go through the rest of the evening, we do expect some more popup showers and thunderstorms moving through, not for everyone because pennsylvania was in the clear this afternoon, but areas like delaware and south jersey, can't rule out more showers and storms this evening. looking at sussex county, light rain left over, now there's light range, but one area where

we have very strong storms earlier, and that area is in the clear at the moment. what we're watching now, more storms off to the west, this is going to be definitely something to watch tonight. they are moving to the east and southeast. some of these could try to move in this evening, and we'll watch popup showers and storms this evening. we have damage reports, a lot of it cop fined to cape may county where this afternoon we had tornado warnings out. if you look at some of the damaged reports in cape may county, we have some reports of windows blo windows blown out of houses. this is cape may county, a tree fell on a house. we had gusts near 60-70 miles per hour. look at this wind estimate. a gust here of 68 miles per hour in cape may county. this is cape may harbor. 68 miles per hour gusts. very damaging wind gusts in cape

may county earlier today with that tornado warning. good news now is all severe storms have moved out. here's future weather. as we go through the next few hours, again, there is a chance of a few more showers or storms developing in parts of new jersey and around the baltimore area which we'll watch closely because those storms are really only going to travel east, and that would put them in delaware and south jersey by about 10:00 to 11:00 p.m. we're not in the clear everywhere just yet, but in the short term, we're in the clear in south jersey and delaware. we can't say that later on tonight, though. 1:30 tomorrow afternoon, good news is we're trying out everywhere. clearing, but warm. then we have another round of storms into thursday. before the week is over, another round of thunderstorms. could start as early as thursday morning through thursday afternoon. some storms could be severe. here's the thursday severe storm threat. the areas shaded in yellow including a larger portion of our area than it did today.

wildwood. no word of if anyone was hurt, but it is a crazy sight. right side of the screen there, the roof just twisted off. new jersey governor chris christie is taking on schools meanwhile. he wants equal funding for every student across the state. christie announced the plan to distribute aid to students in the state, roughly 600 school districts. right now, lower income districts get more money per student than those with higher income suburban schools. the current method he says is unfair and major factor in the state's highest in the nation's property taxes. in newark right now, we spend $750 million a year on education, 69% graduation rate. >> reporter: adage of fair and equal is impossible in this situation because spreading money out to everybody does not solve a problem. we have children that come from

high winds, rain ripped through the jersey shore today. we were there as severe storms ripped dong signs at the wildwood board walk this afternoon. look at the poor person trying to navigate through the weather rolling in earlier today. we found crews cleaning up in wildwood. already trees down in the area. look at this building.

high winds ripped the roof off. nbc 10 viewers giving us compelling images of the storm's impact down the shore. this is one we had to show you. look at lightning hitting earlier in wildwood on the right side of the picture. >> a much different scene down the shore now. this is the scene from the camera in cape may. things clearing out. a look at the first alert radar, storms moved through for the most part heading off the coast this evening. >> ac electric reporting 32,000 outages at this hour. >> let's go to our meteorologist. >> the storms are are off in the atlantic, moving offshore. good news for cape may county and areas in delaware, but now we're seeing showers popping up in chester county and more around washington and baltimore that are moving in the direction. we'll watch those closely as we go through the rest of the evening. the ones mentioned in chester county, they have popped up very quickly. we have to keep an eye out for
