area. >> the wind just picked it up and lifted the whole building, roof off. >> tearing buildings apart, ripping trees from their roots. >> i saw the first tree go down on the roof and right after the second one went doesn't. >> nbc 10 was there during the storm and we're also here for the cleanup. this is the kind of damage we're seeing, a roof torn from a garage in wildwood. good evening, i'm jacqueline london. >> i'm jim rosenfield. cape may county saw some of the worst damage in our area. nbc 10's brandon hudson begins our coverage in middle township tonight. >> reporter: we're told this is at least one of a dozen trees that crashed through a home. in 30 minutes, this storm packed a lot of punch in parts of south jersey forcing crews and homeowners to spend the next few hours cleaning up. >> lift. >> reporter: a silver lining for one family in middle township. the vasser family reunited with the second of two lost cats after a large tree crashed

through their home this afternoon. we spoke to the homeowner as the pet was discovered. >> oh, that's all i need. thank you, lord. thank you, lord. thank you, lord. >> reporter: chris vasser wasn't home one the storm rolled through but his neighbor was. >> it was like a tornado was coming down the street. i mean, a big old -- i was literally standing there shaking. >> reporter: not too far away, another tree tumbled on a home in burly. middle township place say no one was hurt in the storm. some people did lose their cars. several trees fell in the parking lot of this home depot on indian trail road. what did all this sound like? >> very, very loud. some crashes outside the window, you could see some lightning. >> reporter: the store closed early because the winds knocked three heating a.c. units out of place on the roof causing water to leak through. all the customers got out safely. >> made sure our customers didn't leave the building. served them some water and really just worked on calming everybody down.

>> reporter: the red cross is here to help out this family. wildwood was another place that was hit hard. one of their municipal buildings lost a roof and crews will need to restore power to the businesses on the boardwalk which is a big moneymaker for the summer. in cape may county, brandon hudson, nbc 10 news. power outages to tell you about. right now 21,000 people without power mostly in cape may county. much of the southern part of the jersey shore took the brunt of the storm. >> heavy winds ripped part of this roof off the condominium building in wildwood cape may county. from skyforces 10, pieces of the roof shattered all over the property. these are the boardwalk condominiums at east tenth avenue. lot of cleanup left to do here. >> more video. cape may, fierce winds blew over nearly a dozen boats at the yacht club on delaware avenue. >> at the cape may airport in lower township, this small plane was no match for the strong wind gusts. the plane got tossed around the tarmac and flipped over.

thankfully no one was inside at the time. let's bring in nbc 10 first alert meteorologist sheena parveen. >> bnss, we heard them say it was like a tornado when through their neighborhood. we don't have confirmation it was, indeed, a tornado yet, right? >> not just yet, jim and jacqueline. this will be like tomorrow's timeframe where they'd have to two out and survey, emergency management or the national weather service, go survey any damage in parts of cape may county. of course, we'll be keeping you updated on that. in the meantime, the storms have all left the area. that's the good news right now. we're not dealing with any strong thunderstorms. we're fairly dry on the radar. all the storms from today are off in the atlantic. they have moved out to sea. and as we go into tomorrow, we're only going to be seeing drying conditions. so here's a look at future weather. any sprinkles left over by midnight will continue to clear out and we keep on clearing through tomorrow morning so your morning commute will be dry. you don't have to worry about any storms moving in. here's what it will look like at 7:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, very different from this afternoon if you were in new jersey or

delaware and saw those storms. even in parts of mercer county or bucks county later this afternoon, we actually saw strong storms again. if you're in quakertown tomorrow morning, 7:00 a.m., 6 4 and sunny. atlantic city, 71. philadelphia 71 degrees. a nice day tomorrow but another round of storms potentially severe before the week is over. i'll show you the timing on that coming up. breaking news out of burlington county where a house fire is causing some evacuations. skyforce 10 over the home on hawthorne lane in willingboro. neighboring homes on either side have been evacuated as firefighters try to get this one under control. also breaking, a male suspect in custody tonight after philadelphia police say he waved a gun at a group of girls in the city's mayfair section. officials say the girls told their father who then went after the suspect and that's when the gunman shot at the father's car according to police. that caused him to crash into a parked car on cottman avenue. the gunman took off but was later arrested. we don't have any word on any

injuries in that story. another big story tonight, the congressman's downfall. congressman chaka fattah convicted today in his corruption case found guilty on all counts. >> tonight he faces an uncertain future. nbc 10's randy gyllenhaal is live in center city with more. randy? >> reporter: fattah will be sentenced in october. until then, he could file an appeal but he may also be forced out of his congressional seat, this after being convicted today of bribery, conspiracy, racketeering and fraud. the 11-term congressman left court knowing he could spend the rest of his life in prison. chaka fattah guilty on all counts. >> very tough day, but we're going to confer with my lawyers. we'll pick out what our next steps are. >> reporter: in a statement he had more to say. "while today's outcome isn't what we hoped, i respect our nation's judicial system. i want to thank the people of the 2nd congressional district." >> it's a sad day in philadelphia. >> reporter: on the airwaves

today, shock and frustration and in fattah's west philly district, disbelief. >> i never imagined him trying to steal any money. >> reporter: federal prosecutors say he was part of a far-reaching conspiracy taking an illegal million-dollar campaign loan when he ran for mayor and using taxpayer money to write it off. some of that money prosecutors say was supposed to help needy students go to college. >> chaka fattah sr. and co-defendants betrayed the public trust and undermined our faith in government. >> reporter: prosecutors say it's now up to fat t trkfattah e resigns his seat. as a convicted felon he can no longer take votes in house. >> mechanisms in congress with regard to stepping down following a conviction and that's a determination that needs to be made by the congressmen and the congress. >> you have no comment? >> reporter: but already pressure is on government watchdog groups are demanding he step down and so is philadelphia's republican party. >> people of philadelphia have been embarrassed enough through the years and we don't think

they need to go through anymore embarrassment. he should save the city embarrassment and save himself any further embarrassment and step down. >> reporter: now as a congressman, fattah is also a superdelegate at the upcoming democratic national convention here in philly. party officials tell nbc 10 as long as he remains a congressman, he will also remain a superdelegate. live in certainnter city, randy gyllenhaal, nbc 10 news. >> he was on trial with four co-defendants. there was a mixed verdict for them. >> lobbyist herbert vederman found guilty on all counts. he wanted to be an ambassador so he bought a porsche belonging to his wife, former nbc anchor renee chenault-fattah. >> injure found philadelphia businessman robert brand guilty on all charges convicting him of conspiracy to commit wire fraud. >> former fattah aide carolyn nicholas found guilty on six counts including wire fraud and

falsification of records. >> and a split for bonnie bowser found guilty on 5 of 21 counts she faced. fattah's political career took him from west philadelphia to the powerful halls of congress and now could take him to a prison cell. chaka fattah was a 37-year-old state senator when he toppled a political veteran. fattah won the democratic prior may in 1994 beating congressman blackwell. congressman fattah had other political aspirations. in 2007 he ran for mayor losing to michael nutter in the democratic primary. it was that failed mayoral campaign that led to the fbi investigation and the congressman's eventual downfall but first prosecutors took down his son, chaka fattah jr. >> as we move forward through the progress, a vigorous appeal

on my part. >> reporter: the younger fattah taken to prison in february after convicted of fraud. in april, the congressman lost his seat. >> we will no have -- >> reporter: fattah defeated in a democratic primary and weeks after losing the election, he lost his case as well. the judge who presided over the trial, the same man on the bench when fattah's son was convicted. turning to decision 2016. hillary clinton once again on the offensive today. the democratic presumptive nominee blasting donald trump in a speech on economic policy. during a speech today in ohio, clinton trashed trump's tax poli policy and his business record. at one point clinton taking aim at trump for going into bankruptcy with four of his corporations. she warned a group of supporters that trump would devastate the auto industry, stock prices and family savings. >> can't let him bankrupt america like we are one of his

failed casinos. >> in typical trump fashion, he fired right back taking to instagram where he accused clinton of being complicit with president obama in growing the nation's debt. >> hillary clinton's only right about one thing, i understand debt and how to handle it. i made a fortune with debt but debt for this country is a disaster and obama has piled it on and she's been there watching. >> trump is badly trailing hillary clinton on fund-raising. he entered june with just over $1 million in this campaign coffers compared with hillary clinton's $42 million on hand. well the nba draft is coming up thursday night in brooklyn. ben simmons, the guy the sixers are targeting with the top pick, got an early taste of the new york night scene. >> please welcome the best 19 -year-old on the planet, ben simmons, everybody. >> simmons stopped by 30 rockefeller plaza tonight. he was a guest on the "tonight show starring jimmy fallon."

concerns in bucks county. pennsylvania investigate want to know if some wells could be contaminated. includes doylestown, buckingham and plumstead. uses ranging from fire fighting to cookware. they're the same compounds that led to contamination concerns in horsham and wor minister. new developments in the case involving 12 girls rescued in the house in bucks county. the county's children and youth services agency tells us there was a custody hearing this morning for the minors found inside lee kaplan's feasterville home last week. he and two others from lancaster county facing charges. we also learned nearly three dozen relatives of the girls discovered inside the home attended the court hearing but the girls, themselves were not in court. a day after u.s. senators voted down several gun control measure, a republican senator has a new proposal to keep guns out of the hands of suspected terrorists. maine senator susan collins said in a news conference today she expects the senate to vote on

her new bipartisan proposal but senate majority leader mitch mcconnell hasn't said whether there will be a vote. pennsylvania senator pat toomey says he will support the bill. toomey faced backlash for voting against yesterday's bills. and the senate voted down four proposed gun control measures yesterday. two from republicans. two from democrats. the measures were designed to keep terrorists from getting guns and expand the background check system. new jersey governor chris christie making a push for equal funding for every student across the state. christie announcing a plan that would distribute aid equally to the students in the state's roughly 600 school districts. right now students at lower income school districts get more money per student than students at higher income suburban schools. >> in newark right now they spent $750 million a year on education that yields a 69% graduation rate. think they could spend $350 million and get a 69% graduation rate? >> assembly speaker called christie's proposal unconstitutional and harmful to

meteorologist sheena parveen is back with our neighborhood forecast. is it looking quiet for tomorrow, sheena? >> yes, it certainly is. that is the good news. everyone who saw those strong and severe storms today, postalpost lwe did have a severe thunderstorm warning in parts of bucks county and mercer county this afternoon but we're now quieting down. the storms have cleared out. they are well offshore in the atlantic at the moment. and we're going to keep dry as we go into tomorrow. also, we have some storm reports. a lot of them in cape may county where we had the tornado warning earlier today. then that severe thunderstorm warning. a couple of them actually. so we had a lot of very high winds. this is some wind damage report across parts of cape may county. this one is in whitesboro. this happened this afternoon. a tree fell on a house. so, again, all through parts of cape may county, we've had reports like this. we've had downed trees. snapped power lines. we've seen windows blown out at some of the houses but we can say good-bye to that weather because now we're going to be

seeing nice conditions for tomorrow. so your neighborhood weather for tomorrow, foxchase near 88 degrees and sunny. if you're in lans dale, 87 degrees. mostly sunny. reading, 86 and mostly sunny. new jersey, glass guy borbor new jersey, glass guy borboo 87. closer to the shore low 80s. delaware tomorrow, 87 in wilmingt wilmington. mostly sunny skies. your seven-day forecast is always scrolling at the bottom of the screen for you. then we go into thursday, a different story than tomorrow. tomorrow looks good. thursday stormy again. we have a severe thunderstorm risk area out and includes a larger portion of our area than today with the storms. so through much of pennsylvania, new jersey and delaware, by thursday, we could see damaging winds, lightning, hail and heavy rain with thunderstorms that we expect to move in. the timing could be shifting a little bit as we go into your thursday. but so far, it does look to be possibly in the afternoon hours, we're going to be watching that very closely.
