nbc 10 breaking news. firefighters in chester made several rescues this morning after fire broke out inside a house. we'll take you there live to the scene. hear how the churn and adults are doing. this is cleanup day across parts of cape may county where severe storms left quite a mess. the national weather service wants to know if it was a tornado that touched down here. contamination concerns for people living in doylestown, bucks county. they are the latest community to deal with a chemical found in their drinking water. this is "nbc 10 news today." i'm tracy davidson. let's get right to meteorologist bill henley with his first alert neighborhood forecast. a close look at conditions at communities across pennsylvania, new jersey and delaware.

morning, bill. >> morning, tracy. it is a nice morning, though. storms are completely out of the picture. there's still scattered clouds but no sign of any showers. the wind will be picking up today. that will make for pleasant conditions this afternoon. it will be a warm summer day but the humidity drops as the day goes on. you can see a shake in the camera. that's the wind that's starting this morning. 71 degrees in philadelphia. look at the suburbs and the lehigh valley, in the upper 50s right now. 69 degrees in delaware and 60s at the shore and south jersey. for interior new jersey it will be a warm afternoon. won't hit 90 but we'll be in the middle to upper 80s this afternoon. that's a big warmup for clayton at 67. mt. laurel is 69 degrees and falling. lumberton is 65. princeton down to 54 degrees at this hour. get ready for sunshine today.

i'll go through the forecast hour by hour when i'm back in ten minutes. let's see how the traffic is looking on a wednesday morning. jessica boyington with the first alert traffic. >> we're watching the vine street expressway. all of that construction cleared early this morning. all lanes are open. full access through center city right now. these are our cameras around 24th street. no big problems or delays. traffic moving westbound and eastbound nicely. both directions back open in between the schuylkill and broad street. we're still watching construction over the admiral wilson boulevard between baird boulevard and the circle. you'll see delays with lane restrictions. 422 looks great, eight minutes at the most eastbound from 29 to the schuylkill expressway. jersey roads when i come back in the next ten. we begin with that breaking news out of chester right now. firefighters rescued children and adults after flames broke out inside a home overnight. nbc 10's matt delucia is live on scene in chester. matt, what have you learned?

>> that's right, tracy. five people were rescued from this house that's just behind me. we're at west 3rd street and yarnell street. the fire department crews are still on scene at the moment. you can also see the damage to the house here. chester fire telling us there was a heavy fire on the second floor when they pulled up. firefighters say this house has several units, six apartments and 12 tenants. they pulled out five people from the fire escape including two adults and three children. >> all the victims that came out over the third floor with our assistants came out under their own power. they were brought to crozier for assistance. >> the fire marshal meantime is here trying to figure out how

this all started. i just spoke with one of the tenants who lives in this apartment building. we'll have that sound coming up for you in about 30 minutes. for now i'm live in chester, matt delucia, nbc 10 news. >> thanks for the update. it's 4:04. the national weather service will determine if a tornado caused damage like this in cape may county. at least a dozen trees found on shirley avenue. our nbc 10 crew was there as a family was reunited with its lost cats that escaped when a tree crashed through their roof. several trees also fell in the home depot parking lot. >> what did all this sound like? >> very, very loud. some crashing, outside the window you could see lightning. >> all the customers made it out of the home depot safely and the manager hopes to re-open today. an nbc 10 viewer snapped this picture of a lightning

"the philadelphia daily news" calls the congressman big chipper and said shaka con had hand in cookie jar. the jury found him guilty of laundering grants and nonprofit funds to repay an illegal $1 million campaign loan.

>> chaka fattah sr. and his co-defendants betrayed the public trust and undermined our government. >> we'll figure out what our next steps are. >> congressman fattah is free on bail. he stood trial with four co-defendants. there was a mixed verdict for them. vederman was found guilty on all counts.ç the jury also found philadelphia businessman robert brand who was a family friend of fattah's guilty on all charges, convi convicting him of conspiracy to commit wire fraud. the jury returned a split verdict for bonnie bowser, the panel found fattah's former chief of staff guilty of 5 of 21 counts that she faced. new developments in the case involving 12 girls rescued from a house in bucks county. the county's children and youth services agency tells us there was a custody hearing yesterday

for the girls found in lee kaplan's home last week. he's charged with sexually assaulting the oldest girl and fathering two children. a couple from lancaster county is accused of gifting the girl to kaplan. all three adults will appear in court in august. we've learned nearly three dozen relatives of the girls discovered in the home attended the court hearing yesterday but the girls themselves were not there. philadelphia police are searching for two men in connection with robberies and shootings in center city. according to authorities, they tried to sell a man drugs early saturday morning at broad and walnut. when he refused they shot him in the leg. a few minutes later within the same robbers took another man's cell phone. they chased him, fired a shot, missed him and then they took off. the last day for students in the philadelphia school district. forget summer break for leaders of the south works school.

they hope to transform it into a community school in time for next year. nbc 10's katy zachry is live in south philadelphia to explain. katy? under philadelphia mayor jim kenney, half a dozen people schools in the city will be transformed into community schools in just a matter of months for the start of the school year this fall. this one behind me from south philadelphia was one of the first to apply for the change. now, here they educate kids who are pre-k through 8th grade. they've become a community school in a lot of ways. it's based on the idea that the building would be used for much more than just teaching kids. for example, during the day, a medical clinic or counseling center would be open to students and the community or after school the building would have classes or resources for parents. they've already started some of that here. >> how does that benefit the kids here during the school day? >> because it's giving them some

a sunny day today. a warmup, a big warmup into the upper 80s this afternoon. a beautiful summer day today. right now, the radar satellite completely clear. no sign of clouds or showers. not expecting them today. but we are seeing a bit of fog with the moisture left over from yesterday and temperatures cooling down. zero visibility coatesville. coatesville tends to see fog before much of the rest of the area. down to three-mile visibility in blue bell. there is light fog in parts of new jersey, bellmawr, three-quarter mile visibility. it was just a few minutes ago down to one mile in atlantic city. the wind picks up, mixing in the atmosphere and that gets rid of fog in some instances and that's what we're seeing in atlantic city. the other thing that will help get rid of any fog is temperatures climbing. starting off in the 60s and 70s. at this hour, the temperatures are still falling. some of the suburbs in the 50s right now. 60s for exton at 68 degrees, 70

in st. david's. the 50s in new hope and newtown. that's the drier air flowing into the area already. the rest of the area will feel the drier air today thanks to this. the forecast winds for this afternoon, out of the northwest, 15 mile-an-hour winds. that's for philadelphia and wilmington. just a little bit stronger in atlantic city. with the winds coming in out of the west, we'll see warm temperatures, not just inland but they'll reach the coast during the day today. 80s for the entire region today. and sunshine, too. that looks pretty nice. 71 degrees at 7:00. by 11:00, philadelphia in the low 80s. warming into the middle 80s for the suburbs with bright sunshine. first thing this morning we have sunshine that will get rid of any of the fog that's around to start with. lehigh valley, sunny skies, 65 degrees. near 80 at 11:00. into the 80s this afternoon. and to the south, delaware will see sunny skies, maybe a few, thin clouds this afternoon, 85 degrees. and new jersey, 60s to start

with. by late morning we'll be in the low 80s in new jersey. there's the shore, starting off a little bit warmer at 71 degrees. look at that quick warmup. won't get the normal cooling that you feel off the ocean during the day today thanks to those winds. sunshine today but there are storms expected to return tomorrow. take a look at the extended futurecast when i'm back in ten minutes. tracy? 12 minutes past 4:00 this wednesday morning. let's get you to work starting with route 73. first alert traffic reporter jessica boyington has a look. it looks clear until you stepped out of the way. >> the other way, there we go. right behind me. we are watching construction that actually just popped up a few moments ago because there was only one vehicle with flashing lights on scene. now you can see a few. this is route 73 around 295 in mt. laurel. this is the southbound side. you can see lane restractions there. buildup in the area at least behind the scene right now.

something to watch out for, construction on 73 in different areas. one lane allowed to get by at that point. also watching more construction over in delaware on 495 northbound. that on and off ramp is close the at exit 4 until the 30th. here's the blue route around germantown pike. no problems or delay. not a lot of cars on the roads. here's 95. flying through there, no problems north or south. 11 minutes at the most from 295 to 495 with speeds still into the 60s. tracy? >> jessica, let me add this traffic note in philadelphia, a section of martin luther king drive will be closed tonight. the streets department will shut down mlk drive between the art museum circle and sweetç briar drive beginning at 9:00. workers will repair the road and sidewalk and clear the drains to prevent flooding during future rainstorms. mlk drive is expected to open by 5:00 tomorrow morning, so it shouldn't affect the morning rush. residents in parts of bucks

compounds. now, the pennsylvania department of environmental protection is testing more drinking water sources in doylestown, buckingham and plumsted. the chemical compounds are the same that led to water problems in horsham, warrenton and warminster where authorities say contamination came from a former navy base in montgomery county. at this point they don't know the source of the cross keys contamination. today,ç former u.s. house speaker dennis hastert must report to a federal medical prison in minnesota. he admitted in a plea deal he tried to pay hush money to a victim of his alleged sexual misconduct. the investigation revealed he sexually abused at least four boys during his teaching days in the '60s and '70s. he wasn't charged with child abuse because the statute of limitations ran out. three people from lehigh and carbon counties are in custody in new york city after police stopped them from trying to drive through the holland tunele with weapons in their truck.

port authority police stopped the truck for a cracked windshield and found the guns and am nation. two men from zionsville in lehigh valley and a woman from lehighton each face weapons charges. the discovery left people who use the tune until shock. >> it's horrible. >> what somebody is doing with that, that's just not right. >> law enforcement sources told our sister station in new york that one of the suspects told police they were heading to new york to rescue a kidnapping victim. the associated press sites sources saying they planned to rescue a teenage girl involved with drugs. the port authority released no official motive but say there is no link to terrorism. a delaware man is recovering after he was bitten by a shark while vacationing in south carolina. the man was floating on his back in the ocean off north myrtle beach when he felt a tug on his foot. he saw his foot in the shark's mouth. the man shook his foot loose and

then swam to shore. >> i heard the guy yell and i saw him hopping a little bit. he came out of the water and i thought maybe he had gotten stung by a jellyfish. then i saw blood gushing. >> a lifeguard wrapped up his foot. the man was treated at the hospital for pumpg turs on his foot. witnesses believe the shark was 3 to 5 feet long. now your nbc 10 first alert neighborhood weather with meteorologist bill henley. clearing skies this morning. we're clear of any showers and thunderstorms. we're not going to be getting a repeat of that during the day today. we're watching the temperatures fall in philadelphia. still on the warm side. society hill, west mt. airy, fox chase, all at 71 degrees. chestnut hill 70. these temperatures are still falling and the wind is starting to pick up. that's bringing drier air in. we'll see the temperatures come down a few more degrees before the sun comes up this morning. a few scattered thin clouds.

they're still in the area. they will break for lots of sunshine today. tomorrow, we're tracking showers and thunderstorms. iowa and into illinois, could threaten us later tomorrow. forecast shows the futurecast shows those storms part of a system that will be impacting our area not today but tomorrow in the afternoon. the clouds will be building. some scattered showers, look at the heavy weather moving through hagerstown. looks like it will be later tomorrow. for the day, plenty to enjoy. seven-day forecast, one seven day for each part of our viewing area the ten-day outlook, that's once a half hour. here it is. 88 degrees. tomorrow, storms return. showers and thunderstorms, clouds will keep us in the low 80s in the afternoon. friday, sunshine is back. we'll be drying out. 85 degrees. the humidity will be falling as we go into the weekend, too. it will be a warm first weekend of summer. 88 degrees on saturday. near 90 degrees sunday
