lebron james. and he's officially coming to philly. now, it wasn't a surprise, but it was still cause for celebration. good evening. i'm jacqueline london. >> and i'm jim rosen. we have team coverage starting with john clark. he's live at the barclays center in brooklyn where the draft happened. a lot of hopes and dreams riding on this pick. >> it was 20 years ago when allen iverson was the number one overall draft pick for the 76ers. the last number one overall pick. and you saw how he changed around the fortunes of the sixers franchise and the sixers are hoping ben simmons can do the same thing. here he is being selected tonight. >> the philadelphia 76ers select ben simmons. from melbourne, australia. and louisiana state university. >> reporter: ben simmons grew up in australia. his dad played for sixers coach brett brown in australia. so this is a dream come true. he left australia to go play hoops here in america in high school.

he had to talk his mom and dad into it. and boy, did it pay off. the number one overall draft pick out of lsu. he is so versatile. he can do so many different things on the court. i asked him, how nervous he was before getting picked. >> my legs were shaking. i was a bit nervous. but i really enjoyed the experience. >> i don't know how excited sixer fans can possibly be. back in philadelphia we have seen them jumping up and down. we saw them here. allen iverson was their last number one pick 20 years ago. you were born a month later. and you revealed that you had an a.i. poster up on your wall and you had the -- what age could this have been? >> 7 years old. i had the a.i. poster hanging on my door. everybody knew i was a sixers fan. >> in australia? >> definitely, yeah. >> and why did you lose the braids? >> i think it was -- it wasn't my thing. i turned into a 6'10" point forward. so it didn't really fit. >> the sixers love ben simmons,

and they think he can be a transcendent player in the nba. you've heard the comparisons to lebron james. lebron mentors him. they have the same agent. let's hope their careers keep on the same wavelength. we're going to have a lot more one on one with ben simmons coming up in sports. for now in brooklyn i'm john clark. >> that says it all right there. look at the sixers fans roaring. as soon as they heard the pick. after several disappointing seasons of course. they're hoping this is the light at the end of broad street. >> nbc 10's brandon hudson is live at akins oval where the sixers held their draft party. i know you got some advice from the sixers' last number one draft pick. >> jacqueline and jim, you heard john talk about allen iverson. well, iverson was here tonight at the draft party. his advice to ben simmons is to lay it out on the floor each and every night. you look around, you can see akins oval looks a lot different

than it did a couple hours ago. earlier tonight we had fans all over this place. standing room only in some places. many of them hoping that simmons can be the guy that re-energize this team and re-energize this city. >> ben simmons. >> reporter: after weeks of waiting, philly basketball fans could finally welcome ben simmons to the 76ers. confetti rained on the crowd in a celebration that rivaled a championship win. if you ask fans, they hope simmons can bring more people to the wells fargo center. >> it's been dead in there. other than the big games. so hopefully he brings some excitement and gets people out to see some of the games. >> the fact that he built up, what, 25 pounds of muscle. this guy's going to work. he's going to work hard. and i think it changes the whole team. >> reporter: fans and families took over eakins oval for tonight's draft party in centre city. some looking forward to the future. >> how excited are you for what's coming up here? >> i'm very excited. >> that's a classic.

>> reporter: others like bob kaplan reflecting on past success. >> that's wilt. that's my counselors. and that's me. >> reporter: bob showed us a photo of him and wilt chamberlain when he was 10 years old. speaking of former 76ers, hall of famers julius erving and allen iverson partied with the crowd. a.i. laid out a blueprint for success for simmons. >> i would say just come in here, giving everything you've got, win every game like it's your last. and i feel like these fans here are going to support him. >> reporter: many fans are hoping to see chris dunn as a 76er, but after that didn't happen a lot of them went home. now, the team is very excited. the fans are very excited. they're hoping that the team can be a contender. but they know it may take a couple of seasons before they take the playoffs in the east and try to contend in the nba. live from eakins oval brandon hudson. nbc 10 news. >> and they know about patience.

the nba draft a bright spot on an evening that had moments of gloominess. nbc 10 was there as the rain fell in centre city. some people remembered their umbrellas. others, yeah, were caught off guard. >> i remember because sheena told me. sheena parveen has your weather. how much longer are these showers going to stick around? >> it demands where you are. most of the wrar area is dry. but there's rain in parts of baltimore that could move into parts of kent county. i would say in a couple of hours. a little while longer here. but we do have some showers still in parts of new jersey, mainly gloucester, camden county. a few sprinkles there. but also atlantic county, parts of burlington county. this is mostly just very light rain. it is already starting to die out. we don't expect too much more for most of the area tonight except again that area of rain around baltimore heading toward parts of delaware. so the planner as we go into tomorrow, we're going to start off dry for the philadelphia area. chance of some afternoon showers or a pop-up thunderstorm. pennsylvania suburb fairly dry. can't rule out an afternoon shower or storm. same thing pretty much through

the lehigh valley. also delaware, new jersey and along the shore. mostly dry day tomorrow but we could see some scattered showers try to move in. i'll show you the timing of that and your weekend forecast coming up. >> all right, sheena. sky force 10 over an accident causing problems for drivers. a tractor-trailer jackknifed in bell maher camden county. here's a bird's eye look at that scene between 26 and 28. no one was injured. but two southbound lanes are closed. there's anguish tonight for a 4-year-old girl killed from a gunshot fired inside her north philadelphia home. >> detectives have spent the night questioning the girl's mother, but many of the details about just what happened, they're still unclear tonight. nbc 10's drew smith live at police headquarters. drew, what have you learned? >> reporter: well, we've been checking all night, and i want to stress there has been no official ruling on what happened here, whether it was an accident or something he is. in fact, one of the detectives here told me this is a delicate process because that victim is so young. her own mother, who was in the

home at the time, is now being questioned. and there's still evidence to go through and an autopsy to complete on that young girl. family and friends hug together outside the home of this mother pictured with her 4-year-old daughter. neighbors identified them saying play outside. tonight they put zpreenltds of the north 20th street home where witnesses say the mother brought her injured daughter to wait for help. but doctors pronounced the girl dead at the hospital. people outside the e.r. cried. and the victim's cousin struggled to talk about the last time he saw her. >> i remember playing with her, you know. i was watching her. and i held her on my shoulder. >> reporter: the girl's grandfather was also nearby when the shooting happened. >> i just heard all the noise and everything, and i saw the police cars. >> reporter: we asked where the gun came from and who pulled the trigger. but police won't say yet. insisting they're still looking at the evidence and doing interviews. >> it's a very tragic situation.

another indication there are too many guns that are out there. >> reporter: one family member left police headquarters crying. she hid her face and did not want to speak. >> it's hard. it's hard right now. it's hard right now. >> reporter: and we never did see that mother leave police headquarters here tonight but we do know she spent a lot of time with homicide detectives. federal investigators are also involved here looking into that gun that is now part of evidence. we're live at police hblths. i'm drew smith, nbc 10 news. immediate departure. convicted congressman chaka fattah stepped down a lot sooner than he suggested. today he announced his immediate resignation and it comes just a day after he said he would stay in office until he's sentenced in october. fattah said he didn't want to be a distraction to the work of his fellow lawmakers. on tuesday he was found glty on all 22 counts against him including racketeering, fraud, and money laundering. governor tom wolf will decide whether to call a special election to fill fattah's seat.

tonight we're following two major rulings from the supreme court. one upholding affirmative action in college admissions. the other ruling a defeat for president obama's immigration plan. so we begin with the court's immigration ruling. the tie vote dealt a devastating blow to millions of immigrant families. >> those families could now be sent out of the country. >> the fact that the supreme court wasn't able to issue a decision today doesn't just set the system back even further. it takes us further from the country that we aspire to be. >> the justices' opinion effectively killed the president's plan. it would have allowed parents of u.s.-born children the opportunity to stay in the country. alma munoz of cherry hill says members of her family were counting on that protection. her sister broke the news of today's ruling. >> she called me, and i said are you serious? she was like, yeah. i didn't want to say it this way. but this happened. and then we have to be prepared for whatever comes next.

>> today's outcome means the direction of u.s. immigration policy will be determined in large part by this fall's presidential election. the supreme court also upheld the affirmative action program at the university of texas. the court decided 4-3 that the university of texas at austin did not discriminate in denying admission to abigail fisher, a white woman. the majority ruled that race could be used as a limited factor in trying to build a ♪ we shall overcome ♪ someday the democrats end their sit-in. why they are still declaring victory even though they did not pass a gun control bill. i was going to rescue the girl. sometimes people need protection. >> a local man arrested with an arsenal. who's now coming to his defense?

in decision 2016 tonight bernie sanders told a packed hall in manhattan tonight he is just getting started. the vermont senator was referring to his political revolution that challenged hillary clinton's campaign for the democratic presidential nomination. sanders vowed to campaign across the country on behalf of progressive causes and defeat donald trump's presidential hopes. >> we understand that trump is so -- i mean, it's hard almost to imagine a man who has such limited capabilities becoming president. >> sanders still hasn't formally dropped out of the race or endorsed clinton. a day after his blistering speech attacking hillary clinton's honesty, donald trump sat down with nbc news today where he continued to press the attack. nbc's lester holt sat down with

the presumptive republican nominee in his new york apartment. among other things lester pointed out trump's criticism of hillary clinton for taking wall street money. >> will you take wall street money? >> i'm taking very little. i'll tell you what -- >> but you will take some? >> i don't know. we'll have to see what comes up -- >> you won't take a pledge not to -- >> i have turned down millions of dollars from people who i don't really want to give me money. okay? she's taken tremendous amounts of wall street money. i put up my own money. >> trump also insisted the private e-mail server clinton used as secretary of state was hacked but could not say where he got that information. dozens of local families came together tonight. they gathered on the steps of the philadelphia art museum to help put a face on the gun violence that affects so many in philadelphia. the numbers are staggering. this year alone there have been more than 500 shooting victims in the city. house democrats declaring

victory today after their unprecedented protest over gun control. >> but rather than a sit-in on the house floor today they took things outside. after more than 24 hours of a sit-in on the house floor. democrats demanding a vote on gun legislation. here they are walking down the steps of the capital where a crowd had been gathering. the action on the house floor even drew pennsylvania's bob casey from the senate side. >> it's been dramatic i think and unprecedented because we're facing an unprecedented challenge with regard to gun violence. >> but republicans including pennsylvania congressman pat meehan called it just a stunt, not an effort at real solutions. >> if your party wanted to have a sit-in for something that you believed in, would you do it? >> that wasn't a sit-in. >> why not? >> that wasn't a sit-in. a sit-in is a quiet expression of disapproval. that was chaos. that was a show. >> house members are now in recess until july 5th. a show of support tonight

for three suspects from lehigh county arrested with an arsenal at the entrance to the holland tunnel in new jersey. the three claimed they were on a mission to save a teenage girl trapped in a heroin house. but when they were pulled over approaching the holland tunnel, police found five handguns, body armor, and a loaded m-4 asult rifle in their truck. prosecutors charged them with weapons violations but friends say john ramsey merely forgot to unload his truck that day and that he's no vigilante. >> every time he's gone on one of these rescues there was never any firearms. they were going there to help. they were going there to rescue. they had their hearts into it. nothing else. >> friends are now organizing a fund-raiser to pay for the group's legal bills. from our delaware bureau the state senate passed a bill today aimed at allowing first defenders to escape conviction for misdemeanor marijuana offenses. the if a first offender pleads

guilty or no contest to an offense and complies with the terms and conditions of probation. the probation bill awaits the governor's signature. there's a coming together of cultures tonight tonight in center city. >> joining members of the muslim community for the iftar dinner. it's the communal meal that breaks the ramadan fast each day at sunset. this year's dinner also raised money for three local charities. let's check in with sheena parveen for a look at our weather tonight and tomorrow. sheena. >> it's going to get better as we go into the weekend. we had some heavy rain around the area. but the most severe weather that did stay to our south. and that's where it's going to stay tonight. but we do have some showers getting a little bit closer to parts of delaware. they're still around baltimore. and we still have some sprinkles in new jersey. but those are really starting to die down. if you're in kent county or newcastle county you may see some showers there. i would say in a couple hours. so mostly through the overnight hours. we could see a few lingering by tomorrow morning. also don't forget your seven-day forecast is always in the bottom

of your screen with our new neighborhood weather. for tonight first headline, a few lingering showers in the forecast. then we go type tomorrow. it's going to be warm. we'll still have the chance for a shower. but it's not going to be widespread. lehigh valley has the lowest chance tomorrow for a shower. temperatures around 80 degrees. 81 in bethlehem. 83 degrees in easton. if you're in the pennsylvania suburbs you have a chance of a shower tomorrow afternoon. westchester coming in 82 degrees. i think most of the day, though, will be dry. just don't be surprised if you see a shower. philadelphia area 85 degrees with a pop-up shower. same thing for our new jersey neighborhoods. 81 haddonfield. 82 in trenton. closer to the shore. galloway township could see some very early showers trying to hang around the shore early in the morning. if you're in dell zell 80 wilmington. dover with a chance for a shower mainly in the middle of your day tomorrow. then we go into the weekend sunny and dry and nice for the first full weekend the first official weekend of summer approaching us.

now here's future weather. we go through tonight you see the rain trying to move into delaware and then south jersey. this is 8:30 in the morning. most of the area dry. we could see some lingering showers in parts of delaware and along the shore in the morning. otherwise, most of the day's dry but by the afternoon the model here trying to pick up on a few more showers, maybe a thunderstorm forming. lower chances through the lehigh valley. we do clear out for tomorrow night. and then going into your weekend, your saturday looks really good. to start off the week. and plenty of sunshine. temperatures warming up for the first weekend of summer. so as we go into your weekend, saturday, mid ailts. sunday near 90 degrees in some spots. and if you're heading to the shore, temperatures will be in the mid 70s on saturday. upper 70s on sunday. you can expect plenty of sunshine. here's your shore forecast for brigantine saturday. 76 degrees and sunny saturday. sunday 78 degrees and sunny if you're heading to wildwood. saturdays looking pretty good. upper 70s as we go into sunday. nice and dry. john? >> thank you very much, sheena.

[ cheers and applause ] >> reporter: of course the last number one overall pick for the sixers was allen iverson 20 years ago. ben had a very good freshman season at lsu. he's very versatile. he can do many things on the court. he's going to play at the power forward position. but he can pass the ball like a point guard. i went one on one with him after he was drafted. >> it's surreal right now. a lot has been going on. but i'm finally here. but philly's a great spot for me. >> you've talked with brett brown. we saw you talking with him after your workout. what position do you want to play and what position do you think you're going to play with the sixers? >> i think i'll be a point forward. anywhere where we're setting up plays or pushing the ball for break, i think that fits with me a lot. >> where do you think that skill set came from that you have such great vision like a point guard? >> i think at a young age my dad put the ball in my hands and told me to dribble. at a young age i had the mentality of being a point guard while i was bigger than most kids. so i stuck with that and it kind
