the shooting. brendan? >> reporter: rosemary, we expect to hear from police sometime in the next hour. we can ask about the shooter and three other people that were taken into custody. this all started when officer christopher dorman saw people smoking drugs behind an apartment building. >> i'm shot, i'm shot! >> reporter: a scary moment for folcroft officer dorman saying he was shot in the face over the radio. >> i'm shot! >> reporter: a call for help as gunshots ring in the background. police say dorman was shot several times con prompting a group of people believed to be doing drugs at the station apartments. >> i was told by the doctors that thank god he had a vest on. >> reporter: most of the bullets hit the protective vest. moments later, swat, armed and with guns drawn, moved into get the shooter, forcing anybodies out of their homes. we spoke to one not identified.

>> i just saw a cup running, a bloody face, and six gunshots by the side of the house. >> reporter: a team of police shut down baltimore pike after the shooting. the officer rushed to the hospital where his family could be by his side. >> they are upset, but feel relieved now that he's stable. at least stable according to the doctors. >> that was brandon hudson reporting. we were there as the officer was taken from a life flight helicopter into the hospital on a stretcher where he remains at this hour. >> reporter: nbc 10 continues our team coverage now from the hospital in west philadelphia, so fill us in on how he's doing right now. >> well, as you saw in the video, the officer was air lifted by the medical choppers from a hospital in delaware county. the police chief says the family is with him, and they are relieved that the suspected shooter has been caught. >> he was talking to the detective who brought him down here.

the detective or the first hospital and able to speak, conscious, and he was able to give a description of the actors. >> reporter: the 25-year-old officer dorman had two surgeries today. the rookie cop hit multiple times, one gunshot hitting the badge and knocking it off the uniform according to sources at the scene. he was hit in the cheek, shoulder, and leg. >> i was told by the doctors that thank god he has had a vest on. apparently, there may have been several shots into his vest. i don't know front, back, or both, i'm not sure. he sustained injuries where the vest did not cover. >> he was on the station for less than a year, and people praise his action. >> he's a resident here, a fireman, and he then became a police officer over a year ago. he's serving his community. >> reporter: and the community, tonight, wishes him and the family well. again, the police chief says he's been through two surgeries and expected to have extensive

treatment here as he has three gunshot wounds treepted to at this hour here at penn presbyterian hospital. live in west philadelphia, nbc 10 news. >> still with this story, shooting and man hunt caused several amtrak trains to stop on the tracks. it happened blocks from the shooting, and they shut down lines as officers combed the area for the gunmen. service is now back to normal at this hour. the people who live near the shooting were evacuated from the homes for more than two hours. >> hearing gunshots and realized something was wrong right away. tim furlong talked about what they went through, tim? >> this is nuts if you think about what happened here. this is a quiet street, the building there where the scene happened, all the houses here. it's a neighborhood. they were evacuated. dozens of family, in fact, stuck here in this building, hiding in the buildings for hours. in fact, my partner and i went up and watched with the families

up in one of the top apartments as this unfolded outside their door. >> i heard six gunshots in the morning around 9:30. >> reporter: hard not to hear the shots and chaos that followed. >> pop, pop, pop, and it went on, and then all the cop cars and helicopters and the swat team. live with machine guns. >> reporter: folcroft is like any other town, but this was not normal. armored vehicles, officers with machine guns, neighbors forced from their homes while the man hunt was underway, and just a few floors up, you saw across the street, frightened residents running out one by one, hands where swat could see them. no, not normal, in fact, it was scary. >> time for me to get out of here. i can't stay around here knowing this is going on. >> i think my family has a lot of respect for cops, and i think right now, they hope that the cop that got shot is okay. >> reporter: the family let us watch it undpold from their

posted. now your nbc 10 first alert neighborhood weather. >> as for the weather, parts of the area hit with thunderstorms this afternoon. you can see them there on the first alert radar. i want to take a live look now from cape may, one of the areas seeing some rough weather there today. a few people still on the beach despite that, but the threat is not over yet. >> yeah, glenn "hurricane" schwartz is tracking the storms. >> the people on the beach in cape may better get off the beach because there's thunderstorms pretty close by. there's a few showers in southeast pennsylvania, but most of the action is in delaware and extreme south jersey during the afternoon. you can see the storms go by dover, and in south jersey, now into cape may county, just south of sea isle city is the heaviest. cape may courthouse, wildwood on the bottom of the screen, just north of wildwood, but there's lightning with that so stay away even if it's not raining. not much in the philadelphia area.

these showers in chester county are moving down towards baltimore. there is a flash flood warning in arts of cumberland county until 5:30. inches of rain falling there this afternoon, and the areas in dark green are "flood advisories," localized advisories, until 6:30 tonight and more in delaware and other parts of south jersey. we'll let you know when it moves out and what's ahead for the weekend in a few minutes. >> glenn, we'll check back. breaking news now in the past few minutes. the new york stock exchange closed, and it was not a good day. live picture of the big board. you can see the dow jones dropped more than 600 points there. 611 points, the worst single day loss in five years. why? it's all because of the so-called brexit backlash, reverbuating today and hurting your 401k.

it's complex. let's explain it. what happened? a much anticipated election held in britain yesterday and early this morning. we learned, in fact, people voted to leave the european union. now, it could take two years before that exit actually officially happens, but the election outcome is up ending leadership in the u.k. already. shortly after the results came in, the prime minister announced he would resign this fall. he was leading the fight to stay in the european union. here's a closer look at what it means to be part of the european union. basically, a group of 28 countries, 500 million people that are independent, but the union operates one economic market. member nations can trade goods, services, and capitals between themselves, but that membership comes with a host of rules and regulations. the eu was established in 1993, but it has roots to an agreement between germany and france after world war ii. we are live now to explain more

aaa does ceylon don remains the second most popular international travel destination for this summer. nbc 10 news. hey, if you saw someone get their purse stolen, what would you do? step in? new video of a bus driver who did just that. charles opened the door to pick up a woman at 29th street, and before she got on the bus, a man grabbed her purse. as you see, he ran after the suspect and tackled him. he said it was the right thing to do. >> i couldn't look myself at the mirror to see somebody who needs help and you are able to help them, you know, not do it, i just couldn't -- i was not raised that way. >> police arrived at that scene on monday, arrested the suspect, 56-year-old norman jennings charged with robbery and assault. new information on a 4-year-old girl who was shot and killed in her north philadelphia

home. police say it appears she may have shot herself. that's according to the initial investigation. shooting happened yesterday afternoon at a home on north 20th street. the girl's 3-year-old sister and mother were home at the time, and they will continue to invest gait, but no charges have been filed. philadelphia police investigate the discovery of charred human remains found in an empty lot this morning. crews responded to the lot in north philly for a report of a fire. skyforce10 over the scene when firefighters arrived to put out the flames, they found the body. authorities are working to identify the person and how that person died. youngest victim of the orlando shooting rampage laid to rest today in philadelphia. she was 18 and graduated from west catholic prep in early june. friends and family remembered murray today in the funeral service at monumental baptist

church in west philly. those in attendance was carter, wounded by gunfire inside that pulse nightclub in orlando, with her and another friend in florida. the attack at the nightclub left a total of 49 people dead. police later shot and killed the gunman. now to decision 2016. bernie sanders isn't officially endorsing hillary clinton for president just yet, but he says he will vote for her. sanders made the comments today on msnbc's "morning joe". the vermont senator sees the numbers and his job is to fight for the strongest possible platform. >> i'm got at arrhythmia tick, and i know hillary clinton has more delegates than i do and a lot more super delegates. >> he says he'll do everything he can to defeat donald trump. more controversy involving the record hillary clinton kept while secretary of instigate. a review by the "associated

press" finds 75 meetings with donors, supporters, and contributors not listed in the official calendar. missing entries raises questions about how she handled government records documenting her state department tenure. donald trump in scotland, his first international trip since becoming the republican nominee. he landed in scotland hours after the u.k. voted to leave the european union of the he called the vote a great thing. >> it's a great thing. it's going to be great. it's a fantastic thing. >> trump compared the vote in the u.k. to his campaign saying people just want to take their country back. now to a look at flooding taking a deadly toll in west virginia today. 14 people have been killed in flood waters that have just devastates parts of that state. look at these images.

storms packing heavy rain in west virginia early thursday and rain continued throughout the day, leaving thousands of people without power. roads impassable from high water, and 500 people were trapped in a shopping plaza after a bridge collapsed in the high waters. in the last 30 minutes, two people killed in this forest fire in central california. it burns three hours north of l.a., destroyed more than 80 homes, and the flames are threatening about a thousand other homes right now. they already torched about 12 miles of land. back here in our area in delaware, swimmers are being warned about high levels of bacteria in the water in rehoboth beach. they found elevated levels in samples taken wednesday. swimming is not ban, but warning are posted. this is the first weekend of the summer that city pools are open throughout philadelphia. skyforce10 was over north philly today as crews got the pool

ready. the city has more than 70 indoor and outdoor pools that are open from 11:00 in the morning to 7:00 at night during the week and 12:00 to 5:00 on the weekends. the sixers newest superstar arrived in philadelphia. the team introduced ben simmons to the media along with the team's second pick in the draft a short time ago. sixers picked simmons with the first pick in the nba draft last night, just one season at lsu, and he says he's under a lot of pressure playing, but he's ready for it. >> i got a lot of pressure, but, you know, i'm used to it. looking forward to getting to work, as long as i work hard, that's all i ask of myself. >> ben simmons from ausz trail ya, you hear the accent there. a short 10,000 mile trip from philadelphia. now your nbc 10 first alert neighborhood weather with chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. well, parts of the area

through the day without a drop of rain, and other places getting slammed. there's a few small showers in pennsylvania, but heavier stuff down in delaware, central delaware, southern delaware, and right now, towards the jersey shore, so we go to the south. that's where most of the action's occurred. delaware is pretty much ended. southern delaware, that's moving out, the south jersey area hit hard now has shifted towards the shore, and you're getting heavy, heavy rain here, but at least the lightning strikes are diminishing, so this cell is weakening, but stone harbor, sea isle city, up to avalon, they are getting sma inting smashed rain. cape may courthouse with heavy rain as well, but that will be moving out. it's not going to rain all night. southern delaware starting to get heavier rain down near

frankfurt, louis seeing rain clearing. there's a flash flood warning leftover from the rain in new jersey, 3 inches of rain fell, and other dark green areas are flood advisories for localized flooding. remember, you don't want to drive through flooded waters. you saw the folks in west virginia. that can be devastating. southern storms, though, are going to be ending very quickly as we go into this evening, the futurecast shows everything pretty much moving out, and that's it. so we wake up tomorrow with sunshine, lower humidity, and that sets us up for a picture-perfect weekend, and it is another great weekend out there. no doubt about it. all across the area, the temperature's nice, humidity's down, not much wind, but we have

a sea breeze. there is an east wind, on the cool side right at the beaches all weekend long. you have to keep that in mind. the neighborhoods tomorrow just incredible. beautiful weather, chestnut hill at 84 degrees, allentown at 86. a lot of sunshine during the day. you can see that the jersey shore, 76 for atlantic city, 77, avalon, but you're not getting thunderstorms like you got earlier. now, we're going to be seeing these temperatures. here's wildwood, for example, that's what the sky's going to look like. 76 degrees both days, tomorrow and sunday. in the poconos, we're going to be seeing a similar story, lots of sunshine, temperatures in the 70s, low humidity. for example, manayunk arts festival in the 80s saturday and

nbc 10 was there as swat teams rushed into arrest a suspect wanted for today's shooting of a delaware county police officer. that officer, 25-year-old chris dorman, shot multiple times in the head, neck, and shoulder, just outside an apartment complex in folcroft. he's in the hospital now in critical, but stable condition. the police chief says dorman's bullet proof vest likely saved

his life. the shooting forced neighbors out of their homes. >> pop, pop, pop, pop, it just went on, then the cop cars and helicopters, and the swat team was live with machine guns. >> a three-hour man hunt through people's front and backyards, police took four people in custo custody. meantime, we're hearing from friends of dorman. telemundo 62 has that part of the story. >> reporter: shock and disbelief is reaction from people that know kris dorman. he says he's a good guy, and he loved what he did. i spoke to one of his friends who told me he's known him for 14 years. they studied together at academy park high school. he said dorman is a funny guy and someone who took his job very seriously. >> shocked.

been weakening. this is just three hours of a time lapse, and you see the lightning strikes in the white and less and less of them just in the last few images. good thing. it's right between sea isle city and cape may. it's gradually moving offshore. the core of the storm, as you can see, is offsure, just went through cape may courthouse, grazing wildwood, north of cape may itself. so that is good news. there's between wildwood and avalon with the heavier rain. we had a heavy storm in southern delaware. lightning from that one. it's dispating. we have a flash flood warning in cumberland county until 5:30 from rain that already fell from the afternoon and several areas in the dark green of localized flooding. fm

it debuted in 2012 with lights and music, and you can expect to see it back by the hate of the summer season. a lovely show there. delaware farmersme menwants see the fruits and vegetables of their labor. the urban agricultural microgrant, 11 organizations can launch or expand community garden projects, getting up to a thousand dollars each with the goal to provide more nutritious locally grown foods. >> speaking of foods, genetically modified food could be easier to spot. a bipartisan deal would require labels to be placed on with gmos. companies would be allowed to use a symbol or electronic label accessed by smart phone. a more aggressive labeling law in vermont goes in effect next week. that law requires items to be labeled with the words "produced with genetic engineering."

strikes that we did just an hour ago, so things are really improving there, and we're going to be seeing these showers continue to move offshore. there's one in northeast maryland, light showers elsewhere, including southeastern pennsylvania, some just west of allentown, but they continue to move away and the futurecast continues to show that delaware and south jersey, perhaps a few more showers in southeastern pennsylvania, just for a couple hours, but by later this evening, it's all gone. we have a flash flood warning for parts of cumberland county at 5:30 and other advisories across south jersey for rain that's already fallen. of course, you don't want to drive through flooded roadways. now, as we go into tomorrow, we're going to be seeing an east wind and temperatures are going to be moderated because of that.

your sand box? >> reporter: the makeshift beach in her front yard is actually a nesting ground for diamondback turtles, considered a species of special concern in new jersey. >> i care a lot. i think it's just important, you know, to help out in some way with the turtles. >> reporter: the family dumped the sand on the lawn this year to give the turtles emerging from salt marshes a safe habitat to lay eggs under wire cages, at least 15 nests are buried. >> they are looking for beaches, so this is a natural nesting site. >> reporter: a site far more conducive to the turtles than the stone land scaping outside most homes on long beach island, undisturbed beaches along the bay are a thing of the past. kathy laci is director and founder of the locally based nesting project. >> we're going back to what it's supposed to be. >> reporter: besides marking the nests, the cages have another

right now, breaking news of a young police officer shot in delaware county. swat teams invaded the small town of folcroft looking for the gunman after the officer radioed cries for help. >> i'm shot! i'm shot! i'm shot! >> the alleged gunman did not make it far. he was led into police head quarters ending the swat search that terrifieied neighbors. >> we are expecting a news conference with police any minute now. we'll get an update on the investigation and on the officer as soon as the news conference starts. >> in the meantime, the 25-year-old officer, chris dorman, was shot in his face, neck, and shoulder. he's in critical condition. he was shot this morning a short distance from the police station. >> nbc 10 continues our live
