avenue in folcroft. he was alleged to be violating act 64, which is the drug act, and it appeared from the person that called in, that he was actually selling illegal drugs behind that apartment complex at 1528 elmwood avenue. the officer responded to the location. offer dorman arrived, exited his police vehicle, encountered the defendant, a scuffle ensued, and the defendant callously drew his weapon and fired at officer dorman, striking him seven times, once in the face, four times in the chest, once in the groin, and once in the leg. at this point, a second folcroft officer was dispatched, was en

rou route, was on the street behind the apartment building, actually was able to see the struggle, exited his vehicle, and the defendant at this time turned the gun and started to shoot at the second officer and a second attempt to kill another folcroft officer. he received a call over the radio he could hear officer dorman indicating that he was shot. he was able to go through the apartment, through the alley between the two buildings, and ends up on elmwood avenue where a third folcroft officer was able to attempt to render aid and place the injured officer dorman in his vehicle, rush him to fitzgerald mercy hospital whereupon he was treated and prepped to be transported by helicopter to a philadelphia
5:13 pm
hospital is where he's currently at today. we were able to locate the fact that he was the defendant was in the immediate area. we were able to receive help from aatf as well as numerous departments, as well as multiple swat teams as well as the fbi. we had two apartment buildings surrounded and swat in delaware county was act vated. they had the building surrounded for a number of hours and finally was able to take control of the building, enter the apartment where the suspect was, and took them into custody without zerpt. the suspect has been identified as dante brook island, also known as abdul waheim.
5:14 pm
he's been, right now, he's in custody at the folcroft police station. we are in the process of continuing this investigation. we're in the process of charging the defendant. the defendant will be charged with attempted murder, certainly two counts. he'll be charged with aggravated assault, two counts. he'll be charged with related offenses. we also learned that the defendant is a career criminal, is a drug dealer. he also has been convicted of firearm violations, various firearm violations, has been serving a sentence, a long sentences of approximately 15 years in the federal penitentiary, and he was only relatively recently released.
5:15 pm
again, we want to ask you to keep this officer in your prayers as well as his family. i would ask at in point in time the officer chief from folcroft if he wants toed add or say anything additional. >> thank you for your patience in waiting for us. just got word before we came down that he's still in surgery. they expected the surgery to last an another hour. they are working on his face now. everything else that they were operating on appears to be a success. right now, they are working on the facial damage that he has. opening up to questions if anybody has any. >> how was he shot not face? where? >> apparently through the cheeks. >> through the cheeks? >> yes. >> surgery right now in. >> the man who does the
5:16 pm
shooting, island? >> yes. >> he shoots officer dorman seven times and attempts to shoot at the man -- >> second officer. >> second officer. seven times, that's unbelievele. >> it's unbelievele that he's alive, and from what i'm gathering through the family at the hospital, his parents spoke to the doctor, and the doctor said that any one of those rounds upon his vest could have been fatal, shot in the front and back of the vest. three wounds to the body. one in the face, one in the groin, and one in the leg. we just thank god he had his vest on. >> how many? >> seven rounds. >> shot seven times. >> could he fire back? >> i'm not sure. the second officer who arrived on scene exchanged gunfire with the defendant. >> the weapon recovered? >> i believe it was. >> yes. >> what was it in. >> i'm not sure.
5:17 pm
a .40 caliber? the defendant's weapon, correct? >> yes. >> where is the suspect now? >> our headquarters. >> folcroft? >> yes. >> identified the second officer? >> david dipetrow. >> spell the suspect's name. >> island is the first one. no way i can do the second one. w-a-h-i, i believe? wahi. [ inaudible ] >> not a federal warrant, a warrant, but not a federal warrant. [ inaudible ] >> the address was elmwood avenue. >> the apartments? >> yes. i have to look it up. i believe he's in his 30s. >> two women taken into custody? >> no. >> just alleged gunman?
5:18 pm
>> yes. there's other people involved, but one person is under arrest. >> but there were, i mean, according to the video, we could see three women were in handcuffs at the time he was put in the police car. looks like they were too. >> we detained a number of individuals, and right now, it would be investigation ongoing. we have not charged those three individuals at this point as we speak here right now. however, it's still an ongoing investigation, and they were taken out, detained, and they still are in detention being questioned, and they were with the defendant at the time of his arrest. [ inaudible ] >> another apartment. [ inaudible ] >> adjacent building. >> grew up in folcroft, tell me about his life here and with the fire department. >> he was a volunteer for this
5:19 pm
fire department we're sitting in now since he was 16. he's 25. his dream was to to be a folcroft officer. lucky enough to hire him about a year and a half ago, and i don't say that lightly. this is is a good officer. he's part-time officer, but these small communities, we hire part-timers because they leave for other full-time jobs, and i don't want him to leave, but he was in the process of leaving to get a full time job with septa's police department. from what i understand, he was close to getting it. he was going through the process, the background checks and whatnot, but he's the kind of guy that i was telling district attorney jack here that you don't want to lose him because that's how good he is. just a good guy. nothing bothers him. a great sense of humor. something like this happens. i just hope for a full recovery and we get him back. >> comes from a great family. i know his mother and father
5:20 pm
personally. i worked with him. his father is a former councilman here, moved to delaware, a great family. it's a shame both the officer and his family have to go through this. >> dealing drugs, what kind of drugs? >> we have reports of different types of drugs. we know that there was allegations of heroin, allegations of marijuana. >> neighbors said there had been sheriff activity in the location in the last 24-48 hours. is this related to that? >> i don't believe so. we do have an extensive narcotics task force in delaware county. narcotics was aware of suspected drug activity in this particular area, however, i'm not aware of the last 24-48 hours of that being an issue.
5:21 pm
>> married? >> single, no children. [ inaudible ] >> i would defer to the chief, but we do have extensive narcotics task force, over 60 undercover officers that work various neighborhoods in delaware county, and we see, unfortunately, in this particular region, the philadelphia region, a lot of drug activity in certain areas. we investigated, we take anonymous tips, there are certain neighborhoods in many of the communities, unfortunatelily, a long this particular chester pike corridor that has issues. i don't think it's particular already more than the other neighborhoods, but, certainly, we investigate all tips we get and all criminal activity.
5:22 pm
[ inaudible ] >> we had him before, currently being watched. to get back to the original question, we're no different than anybody else to be perfectly honest with you. it's -- we got the main arteries, chester pike, mcdecade boulevard, but the drug activity that you see is nationwide anymore. you see what the districts activities did with the narcan. that's just to bring people back because they won't stop almost killing themselves, so we have the same issues that everybody has. i mean, they might be in shorts and jeans here, but somewhere else in a three-piece suit. it's all over. that i can tell you for a fact. in late 2005, early 2006, we had a council that let us try to do something about it, and that was work undercover, and the reason i bring that up, it's not an easy thing to do in small departments. we're not a city.
5:23 pm
we're not a township, so to have the resources to be able to do that, they gave it to us and continue to. no questions asked. i have several guys working, doing that, just that, and to you do what you can, but it's just, it's not us, it's just -- i don't have an answer, you know, between the pills out there and heroin out there, it's everywhere you look. we're no better or worse than anybody else to be honest with you. >> how long has it been since a folcroft officer was shot? >> last time it was before -- when i came on in the late '70s, there was a sergeant who had been shot in the leg. it was accidental. i believe it might have been self-inflicted, an accidental shooting. we had officer-involved shooting. officer bear was involved in a shooting 20 years ago, but an
5:24 pm
officer injured like this? never. you know, it's a wakeup call for the small towns. you know, you guys see it all the time. we read about it all the time. it's not, you know, you don't want to say it's not going to happen to you, but you hope it doesn't happen to you because it happens everywhere. you're not immune to it. over smoke and grass. just hanging outside, smoke and grass at 10:00 in the morning. someone's willing to take your life. [ inaudible ] >> no, i don't. >> to follow up on a question, do you remember the last time a delaware county officer was shot? >> it's been -- i believe it's been a long time, however, i know that we've had issues with people firing at officers, but i don't recall shot -- one shot, however, just to follow up on
5:25 pm
what the chief indicated is that, you know, folcroft, i know folcroft inside and out. i personally had the opportunity to work in folcroft, and they are really great residents here in folcroft. they care and look out for each other. in this particular case, we got a call from a resident indicating there was an apparent drug deal in the back of 1528 elmwood avenue that led officer dorman to the investigation, and that's the type of residents you have looking out for each other trying to eliminate drug activity in their neighborhood. >> i'll say this, again, back to talking about communities and stuff. our residents, the information we get from our residents is mind boggling. they know we're trying to do something about it, and we are always getting calls from our residents. it's constant. it's the old saying, the eyes and ears of the police.
5:26 pm
it's the case. we always get calls, getting tips, and today was a perfect example, someone bothered to call. we're lucky that way. [ inaudible ] >> somebody's here somewhere, but -- >> frank? he could probably answer questions about the fire house if you need him to. >> suspect was dante island? >> used both names. >> what -- wahi -- what name, nationality is that? >> affiliated with the muslim religion. >> wahi or with a b? >> no b. >> w-a-h-i? >> that's what i believe the
5:27 pm
spelling is. >> i've seen it on the reports that i've reviewed, i've seen it spelled both ways, but i believe traditionally, d-a-n-t-e. >> island? >> that was his name that's on his legal paperwork, his name, his legal name is dante -- >> if you are just joining us now, this is a news conference from folcroft delaware county where an officer was shot this morning. to break this thing down for you, first things first, 25-year-old officer chris dorman from folcroft originally, member of the fire department as a volunteer since 16 years old, breaks up an alleged drug deal happening behind an apartment complex there. as he intervenes, the suspect who we just learned is in his 30s, dante brooks island, pulls out a gun, shoots him seven times, four times in the chest, one in the leg, one in the face,
5:28 pm
and one in the groin. >> we heard from the district attorney there that the suspect, dante brooks island, he's been charged with attempted murder, two counts. one count for officer dorman, and another count for a second officer, the backup officer that responded, and there was an exchange of gunfire there. we also know more about officer dorman's condition. he's still in surgery at the moment having work done on the face. we know one gunshot is located, but surgeries from earlier today were a success. that's the good news. >> the police chief says it's thanks to the bullet proof vest that took four bullets the reason he survived. another hour left to the surgery to the face for a bullet that went through his cheeks. they urge in folcroft you keep the officers in your prayers. we'll monitor the stories here, as this investigation continues into the officer shooting. we'll bring you new information the second we get it.
5:31 pm
squuuuack, let's feed him let's feto the sharks!sharks! yay! and take all of his gold! and take all of his gold! ya! and hide it from the crew! ya...? squuuuack, they're all morons anyway! i never said that. they all smell bad too. no! you all smell wonderful! i smell bad! if you're a parrot, you repeat things. it's what you do. if you want to save fifteen percent or more on car insurance, you switch to geico. it's what you do. squuuuack, it's what you do. a live look at the nbc 10 first alert radar. you can see some storms that were in the area they are slowly, burr surely moving out. >> that's right. glenn "hurricane" schwartz has your neighborhood weather. glenn? >> we have good news here, and
5:32 pm
the lightning strike, no longer there. we had some move offshore. we have some showers in parts of the area, but they continue to weaken. the one exception is actually in burkes county. here's allentown. we're seeing these storms, but they are not getting any closer. that's been the problem today. they don't move very much. they didn't move that much to the shore. fortunately weakened, still getting a little rain for sea isle city down to cape may, but nothing like we were seeing earlier, an hour ago, it was pouring rain, and all up and down, you see that? on the time lapse, that storm coming out, we had another big storm in southern delaware. that's moved offshore. delaware's pretty much cleared out now. so the only advisory we have now is in cape may county, and even
5:33 pm
that, the conditions are improving. the futurecast shows a few of the showers in southeast pennsylvania, but even those weaken as we go through the evening, and so we're setting up for a beautiful weekend. by tomorrow morning, the sun's out, temperatures comfortable, and humidity's down, and so we're not getting a repeat of what we have seen this afternoon. we'll talk more about the rest of the weekends and into next week in a few minutes. >> all right, thanks, glenn. we continue to follow breaking news. the officer shot in delaware county as we've been telling you, officer chris dorman is in critical, but stable condition, and the alleged shooter in custody after swat teams rushed in to make the arrest. >> nbc 10 jim rosenfield is live in the digital operations center with everything we just learned, jim? >> we learned a lot from the news conference that just wrapped up minutes ago, where
5:34 pm
authorities identified the suspect as dante brooks island, known as abdul wahi, a career criminal, recently released from prison. this is video from the suspect on the left side of the screen as he was taken into police custody in folcroft. he remains there tonight at headquarters. three other people also taken into custody there in the back of the police cars right here. all three are being questioned, but they have not been charged. the da says this began with a 911 call this morning about a drug deal at an apartment complex in folcroft. officer dorman responded to the scene, he and the suspect got into a scuffle, according to authorities, and the suspect fired shots at him, hitting the officer seven times including in the face. he also shot at a second officer, say authorities. swat responded then. you see this video right here, right in the middle of the community, took several hours to get the suspect out of that apartment building. the da says island is charged
5:35 pm
with attempted murder and aggravated assault. officer dorman remains in critical, but stable condition at this hour as we said. he's been in surgery, many of the surgeries we're told went well and working on injuries now to the cheek. we'll follow the breaking news, bring you any updates as we get them. live in the digital operation center, nbc 10 news, back to you. >> thank you. this caused amtrak trains to stop in their tracks. it happened a block away from tracks used by amtrak, and skyforce10 over the tracks this morning, and you can see trains were just stopped. officials shut down the lines as officer combed the area for the gunman. nbc 10 spoke on the phone with a passenger traveling from d.c. to new york. >> we came to another stop, we started sort of searching twitter to see what was going on. >> we can report at this hour service is back to normal tonight. we'll be right back.

dear fellow citizen, time spent with my son really makes me appreciate "the now". but i also have to plan for my family's future. and that means taking on debt. in a smart way. like my mortgage - it's working for me. and if he needs a college loan down the road, that'll be worth it too. it's all about having a strategy, that fits your life. so, if you have a question about how to make debt work for you, ask me. sincerely, brandon heaven fellow dad and fellow citizen. about how to make debt work for you, ask me. to you, they're more than just a pet. so protect them...

...with k9 advantix ii. it not only kills fleas, ticks and mosquitoes, it repels them, too. so do more to defend your four legged friend... ...with k9 advantix ii. for the love of dog. the news that brit is leaving the european union sends shock waves in global markets including here at home. look at closing numbers on wall street today. the dow dropped more than 600 points and the nasdaq fell 202 points and the s&p 5 hurgs down 76 points. worst drop for the dow jones in five years. >> yeah. so right now, you might be
5:39 pm
wondering, what exactly is the european union, and why is this affecting our economy? the eu is 28 countries and more than 500 million people each independent, but the union operates one market so member nations trade goods, services, and capital among themselves. membership comes with a host of rules and regulations. the eu was established in 1993, but it has roots that stem from an agreement between germany and france made after world war i. >> britain voted to become the first country to break up with the european union so the eu loses second largest economy and some analysts warn a domino effect causing other eu countries to bolt. prime minister dave cameron who led the campaign to keep britain in the eu announced he'd resign. >> it's not right for me to be the captain that steers the country to the next destination.
5:40 pm
>> it could take two years before the u.k. actually leaves the european union. joining us now what it means for us here at home is our financial expert rob wilson. >> rob, big question on everybody's minds, what's going on with my 401k, and what's going on for me? >> that's an important question, but this is more of a political crisis than a financial crisis. this is not lehman brothers 2.0, no shock like in 2008. having said that, only three things to do with money, make money, invest money, and spend money. unpack it quickly. investing, you're going to see volatility in the 401k. markets hate uncertainty. that's going to cause shock waves throughout the market. earning money, if you work for a company with exports, there's cause for concern. there's a flight to quality right now, so the dollar gets stronger.
5:41 pm
strong dollar is bad for exports. companies who export make less money, and when companies make less money, they reduce staff. talk to your manager and see what the plans are going forward, but with regards to spending, this may help your spending because the strong dollar is absolutely going to benefit you when you go and travel, and interest rates remain low because the feds make a move amongst the turmoil. >> rob, we learned the u.k. could take two years for everything to leave the eu, so how long do you think it'll take for everything to get back to normal? >> you know, with regards to the market, i think we'll see the market return to quote-on-quote normal soon. just put something in perspecti perspective. last time people freaked out was mid-january, worried about china and oil prices, dow down 400 points. fast forward today from then, we're up about 7 or 8%. the sun comes out tomorrow. to your appointment, yes, could be another one or two years before we figure out what this means. >> all right, rob wilson, our

happens to one 6 his passengers this week. today, he's sharing his story of bravery and heroism, although, he says he was just trying to help someone in need. >> oh, i remember everything. first thing in the morning. i had not finished my coffee yet. >> anything but a typical monday for this bus driver, a 28-year veteran of the operation. he picks up passengers with no problem, but at 39th street, a woman waiting for the bus was not alone. the moment she stopped, a man snatches her purse and took off. >> i saw him struggle for the pocketbook, she helped me out by tugging, giving me time, i'm an old guy, i have a wife, mom, and daughters. >> the father of four did not hesitate to tackle the suspect and hold him down until police arrived. the woman was knocked to the

5:50 pm
