morning. the gunfire led to an intense man hunt with several law enforcement agencies surrounding an apartment complex before taking several people into custody. good evening, i'm jim roasenfied on friday night. we learned about officer christopher dorman, shot in a drug bust, taking four bullets to the chest, one to the face, one to the groin, and one to the leg. he was wearing his bullet proof vest, and tonight, the chief says that likely saved his life. all the angles are kvred tonight, more about what led to the shooting, how the officer's doing now, and neighbors caught in the middle of a man hunt in the community. team coverage begins with brendon hudson at the folcroft fire department where we get up to date. >> reporter: jim, we just learned officer christopher dorman was trying to break up a drug deal by one described as a criminal. the suspected shooter had been to prison before.

>> i'm shot, i'm shot! >> a terrifying call about shots fired. we now know what led up to officer christopher dorman shot zem zem seven times. >> a scuffle ensued, and the defendant callously drew his weapon and fired at officer dorman. >> reporter: delaware county district attorney says dorman was able to run away from the gunfire. two other folcroft officers showed up to help. police say the shooter is dante brooks island known as abdu abdul wahi who just served 15 years behind bars. >> we also learned the defendant is a career criminal, a drug dealer. >> reporter: police say dorman saw island selling drugs behind an apartment building at 10:00 in the morning. dorman shot in the confrontation. swat and fbi moved to get the shooter forcing neighbors from

their homes. they left with three other people in custody. island is the only one charged at this time. i want to say island will be charged aarraigned tonight. police are investigating the weapon believed to be used in the shooting. brendon hudson, nbc 10 news. officer dorman was flown to penn presbyterian medical center, went into surgery there, and nbc 10 has been outside the hospital all afternoon. what's the latest on his condition right now? >> reporter: he's critical, but he's stable after having a second surgery. the police chief says it was a dream job for officer dorman to be a police officer and he's been volunteering in service since he was 16 years old. >> no lengths he won't go to to protect the community, and i hope the best for he and his family, thoughts and prayers go

out. this is, wow. tears us up, you know. this is hitting home. >> reporter: seeing the officer on patrol this morning, just a little while before dorman was shot. >> i was told by the doctors that thank god he had his vest on. >> sources say he was fired on multiple times, three gunshot wounds, and hit by other bullets. one shot his his badge, the force knocking it from the uniform. stabilized in a delaware county hospital, he was flown to penn presbyterian. nearly 100 officers gathered here today as many more hunted for his suspected shooter. >> really, really good kid, i mean, couldn't ask for anybody better in the community to serve as a police officer. really, you know, i mean, my heart goes out to those who serve to protect the community, and this is a shock. >> reporter: now, we're told that his parents have been with him since he arrived at the hospital and they were relieved with news that the suspected shooter was caught. reporting live in west give, nbc

10 news. again, we learned 30 minutes ago the suspect kused in the police shooting is a career criminal. the nbc 10 investigators dug into dante's past, this is what they found. court rortecords show he was tod supervised parole tomorrow. island's parole officer raised red flags about that. island it not contacted his parole officer since july of last year. he had missed several scheduled drug tests. the original charge was possession of a gun by a convicted felon. now, we're still going through the court records. more information on this coming up tonight at 11:00. in the meantime, it was a tense situation for neighbors in folcroft today. the shooting and man hunt cem t centered in folcroft, and, tim, the police chief said this afternoon this is a wakeup call for small towns. people who live there got a jarring call today, right?

>> reporter: yeah, you know, see something, say something. when you say something, a police officer puts their life on the line and they are the one who shows up. was it a tense situation for neighbors? it was for everybody here including media. we were here with neighbors early as swat rolled up on the building, the center of the action. everyone was pushed back, everyone was evacuated or then told to go inside and stay inside their homes. we went with a guy inviting us up to the apartment in this building. we watched it unfold from up there, and, yeah, it was tense. >> i was in the backyard with my dad and brother, and there were six gunshots. >> reporter: hearing the shots, but did not stay in the yard to investigate where they came from. >> pop, pop, pop. >> reporter: this woman heard it. >> oh, my god, he shot a cop, next thing you know, tons of cops coming. >> reporter: officers, chopper overhead, machine guns everywhere, we we watched as

residents ran out, hands up for the swat team to see, and certainly scary for everyone around here. >> yes, it did, very much. very scared. i have two children that were in my house. >> reporter: once the suspects were taken into swat teams, they left the tape, coming down, and officer dorman, folks here know the faces of the officers on their town's force. >> i have a son that age, you know, and my heart goes out to the family. it does. >> my family has respect for cops, and right now, they hope the cop that was shot is okay. >> reporter: and you see, that is what remains, roads are back open, tape is down, and everyone trying to get back to normal here. no one here forgets today, every glad the officer survived, and it's amazing he did. live in folcroft delaware county. >> it is. the rails impacted, things getting back on track at 30th street station because they were

suspended for hours while officers searched for suspects near the railroad tracks. passengers on two trains went nowhere for two hours before taking off instead. there were updates from the team as this intense hunt happened at lunchtime. you can get the updates on the nbc 10 app. stay with nbc10.com for the latest on the officer shot. now your nbc 10 first alert neighborhood weather. >> well, we have a stormy friday, but those storms are starting to lose strength. nbc 10 meteorologist has the first alert forecast, and we see that behind you, glenn? >> things changed dramatically in the last couple hours. we had a lot of showers and storms around, and a couple hours ago, especially delaware and south jersey, and things dried up there, and at the same time, we have seen an increase in the activity up in parts of burks county. now, allentown's over here.

doesn't look like any of the showers are headed that way. not much moving in that direction either. it's just sitting there. there's the problem. in the hamburg area and heavy showers and storms. we have showers headed there, last of the suhowers near the shore. heavy thunderstorms there ae earlier. futurecast shows this weakening in the next couple hours as it moves to the south, and that sets us up for really nice weather over the weekend. details on that and next week coming up. tonight, appears a 4-year-old girl accidently shot and killed herself. we told you about the tragedy last night. the shooting happened inside the girl's north philadelphia home yesterday afternoon. girl's mother and another daughter were home at the time.

police questioned the mother, no charges have been filed. >> tonight, a south jersey driver charged in a crash that killed a jogger and passenger last summer. the prosecutes charged patrick miller after toxicology tests came back. he was driving in august when his truck hit alison, the teacher was running on the shoulder, a passenger in the truck, david, also died. a tip call helped police in camden county make a heroin bust. someone called in about drug activity last night on the road, officers found a woman in distress, took her to the hospital, and k-9 mavericks sniffed out 37 bags of heroin in the vehicle, and they arrested a guy name anthony. warning signs posted on the beach in rehoboth because of high levels of bacteria in the water. city found elevated readings in a sample taken wednesday. you can still swim, but warning signs are up on the back of life

recapping breaking news, a folcroft police officer in critical, but stable condition right now after he was shot seven times. officer dorman responded to a drug call in an apartment complex. the police chief credits dorman's bullet proof vest with saving his life, so do doctors. they took the shooter into custody after a man hunt that forced people out of their homes today. authorities identify the gunman at dante brooks island, known as abdul wahi, facing two attempted murder charges, and authorities say it's because he also shot at a second officer. the latest on the officer tonight at 11:00 and any time online. now to another developing story. the financial crisis in europe. it had a ripple effect on the u.s. stock market. today, wall street saw some of its worst drops in five years. the dow finished down more than

lights and music on board walk hall. you can expect to see it back by the height of the summer season. families at the jersey shore take an unusual step to save a familiar creature there. it's a nesting ground for diamondback turtles in the front yard of the dolan family home. the turtles are considered a species of special concern in new jersey, and the family dumped the sand on their lawn earlier this year to give the turtles emerging from salt marshes a safe habitat to bury their eggs. >> i just want to do a little more than crossing the street. >> reporter: there's wire cages to keep predators away from the eggs. now your nbc 10 first alert neighborhood weather with chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. >> saw a good bit of showers today in delaware and extreme south jersey. they have pretty much fallen

apart while areas further north have been increasing. you see lightning strikes there, not too far from redding, but it doesn't seem like the storms are moving very much. hear we are, just on the edge of it. and maybe creek in it, center in it. it's not moving much. that's a problem potentially because we have seen that sort of thing happening in delaware and south jersey causing localized flooding. one of the places that happened in cape may county, but the last of the rain is down there, and all the thunderstorms are moved out. we have heavy rain in dover and other bands coming through, but this is much, much later than what we have been seeing earlier this afternoon. futurecast shows things really quieting down, clearing out setting us up for just a spectacular weekend. we have some sunshine in the pa suburbs, lehigh valley.

the jersey shore? that's a different story. the ocean's 64. we have the wind coming in off the ocean, the clouds, the rain knocked the temperature down, 68, atlantic city, summer's point, cape may courthouse, not ale a pleasant afternoon. it's not warm this weekend at the beaches, but sunny. a different story than what we saw today. philadelphia 86 degrees, it's not feeling hot tomorrow because the humidity's down, way down from what we saw today. temperatures still on the cool side, atlantic city and avalon, closer you are to the ocean, the cooler it will be. i don't expect any kind of showers or thunderstorms in any part of the area. really not a whole lot of cloud cover either. new jersey shore, you can see, once again, temperatures in the 70s through the afternoon. now, the wind will be coming in off the ocean all day.

keeping things comfortable for a lot of people, but some folks would like it warmer. it's not going to be all that warm in the pocono mountains either, but it's sunny and just a beautiful, beautiful weekend. and the ten-day outlook shows all that sunshine tomorrow and sunday, clouds increase a bit on monday, and then tuesday, we have our best chance of showers and zorms returning, at least for a while. then wednesday and into thursday, things quiet down a bit. temperatures close to average, but then another disturbance does look like it comes to affect us for at least a portion of the 4th of july weekend, so i'm not talking about any real chance of extreme heat or any kind of washout, but i do have some showers, at least scattered showers in the forecast for saturday and sunday. of course, we'll keep updating that as we get closer. all right, "hurricane," you'll like this guy, sixers' number one pick, simmons,
