to turn around to make an emergency landing and then moments after touching down, you see this out your window. the wing of that plane engulfed in flames. that was the case for 241 passengers and crew on a singapore air flight overnight. nbc's tom costello covers aviation for us. tom wh tom, what can you tell us? >> a warning light forced the pilot to turn back and just in time. once on the ground, an engine and then a wing burst into flames. a terrifying sight no airline passenger wants to see. the engine, then the wing of a singapore airlines passenger jet on fire monday morning on the tarm tarmac. the jet was forced to turn around following an engine oil warning message. moments after making an emergency landing the right engine caught fire.

frightened passengers had to wait inside the plane until firefighters could douse the flames. the woman who took these images writing on facebook, i just escaped death. i thank god i'm alive. i'm going hug my kids. all 222 passengers and 19 crew members got off the plane safely. singapore airlines says it will cooperate fully with investigators to determine what went wrong. no injuries. one aviation expert suggests the plane was probably dumping fuel on the way back to the airport and that fuel might have clung to the wing when it landed. fire rescue cruise were there quickly and prevented something bad from happening. >> 241 very lucky people. >> absolutely. to two devastating natural disasters at home. historic flooding in west virginia that's killed dozens and a powerful wildfire in california that's already destroyed hundreds of homes. we have both covered beginning with dylan dreyer in west virginia.

dylan, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. late last week nearly 10 inches of rain fell in just 12 hours causing devastating flash flooding. you can see behind me what was a two-lane road is down to one lane. the other lane washed right into the creek below and crews are obviously trying to repair that road. now, this event president obama named it now a major disaster. keep in mind this is a rain event that's expected only once every 1,000 years. across the state of west virginia this morning, the damage is plain to see. sections of roadway collapsed by overwhelming floodwaters. many businesses including this dairy queen completely destroyed. thousands remain without power as residents throughout the state begin what's expected to be a long and expensive cleanup. >> somehow didn't get dirty. >> reporter: the national weather service is calling it a thousand year event.

massive flooding so powerful that cars and even homes were swept away. over the weekend, a controlled release of water from the dam after rainfall caused lake water to rise 38 feet in one day. on sunday, president obama declared parts of the state a major disaster area clearing the way for federal funds. in the aftermath, 300 national guard troops have been deployed. many of them trudging through mud trying to salvage what's left. >> i don't know where to start. i just sit and i cry. >> reporter: the storm leaving many residents shocked by the extent of the damage. >> it's hard. sometimes you just feel like giving up and quitting. >> reporter: amid the devastation, signs of hope. >> all you can do is give people a hug, a shoulder to lean on and some food in their belly. >> reporter: members of several different churches attended a joint service in this parking lot where relief efforts are under way. >> i know that mean people asked me, preacher, where was god in

this? he's right here. >> reporter: now flash flood watches are in effect through this evening. more storms are expected later today and if the heaviest rain occurs in some of the hardest hit areas, it could lead to additional flash flooding. fema encourages anyone who suffered losses in the designated area to register online at disasterassistance. v disasterassistance.gov. >> all right. dylan, thank you very much. let's turn to california. crews there are slowly starting to gain ground on a deadly wildfire that's destroyed hundreds of homes north of los angeles. we go to south lake this morning. >> reporter: good morning. they are calling this fire 40% contained. this particular area is still under evacuation orders but even still people who live here find a way to sneak back here and discovering there's nothing left. during the first night of the

fire, dozens of homes exploded. roads covered in smoke and flames. five miles away danny walker thought he was safe. >> it was quick. real quick. >> reporter: on the second night, the firestorm destroyed over 200 homes burned everything danny owns. we were there as danny saw smoldering remains of his home for the first time. he was hugging his dog named bear who he thought was lost. >> everything is gone. but he stayed. he's good. i got my dog. >> reporter: two of his other dogs haven't been seen since the fire. danny is one of hundreds who have lost everything in the fire. neighbors also sifting through the devastation. nearby, emergency crews use cadaver dogs to look for more casualties. during one of those searchers, a tiny sound and signs of life in the rubble.

>> i heard a meow and there he was. >> reporter: this kitten survived. so many people out here in this situation. at 10:00 today, authorities will begin discussing how to repopulate this area and how to lift these evacuation zones and many people will come home to this. there are several area charities that are accepting donations including the red cross. matt? >> all right. gadi, thank you very much. one part of the country needs rain and other part of the country last thing they need. >> they won't get the hope we need. we wish we had better news. we start off with the fire. a lot of active fires going on right now. it's going to be sunny and hot today. 101. it will be dry and gusty winds all week long. so not a lot of help there. we also have a series of fronts that will be passing through. we do have flash flood watches now from ohio all of the way into virginia including a good

portion of west virginia. as these fronts push through, some of the storms could be severe and we could be looking at gusty winds as they move through right through tuesday and then drier air comes in and they'll dry out. in the meantime as we look at rainfall amounts, it won't take a lot to cause flash flooding. could be upwards of three inches of rain in some of those areas. for the most part, 1 to 2 inches. with the ground completely saturated and rain they've gotten, it won't take much to exacerbate all that flooding. >> we'll keep checking with you, al. thank you very much. let's talk now about the fallout from britain's surprise vote to leave the european union. it caused markets around the world to plummet so what will happen on wall street this week? we have two reports beginning with kier simmons in london. >> reporter: shares in two british banks were briefly suspended this morning with u.k. and europe in a political standoff and politics here in britain, america's closest ally,

in virtual meltdown. america is battling to defend its interest in europe. secretary kerry in rome arriving in brussels today for emergency talks ahead of a meeting tomorrow of all eu leaders. >> i'm absolutely convinced, president obama is absolutely convinced, that we will be able to work through this in a sensible, thoughtful way that takes the best strengths of the eu, the best strengths of the marketplace, the best interest of our national security. >> reporter: the man in charge of the britain's financing addressing the crisis in an early morning news conference attempting to calm european markets. >> it will not be plain sailing in the days ahead. let me be clear you should not underestimate our resolve. we were prepared for the unexpected and we are equipped for whatever happens. >> reporter: britain will take its time before leaving the european union, he said, but the united kingdom is deeply divided

this morning. both main political parties heading for leadership elections and an online petition calling for a revote on the referendum and facebook reports of racist threats on europeans across the u.k. the pope yesterday urging unity and understanding. there is something not working he said. let's not throw the baby out with the bath water but many europe's leaders seem in no mood to compromise. the united states had made clear it did not want britain to leave the eu. secretary kerry now expecting to urge other eu members not to follow britain out. one british lawmaker saying this morning we need to replace hate with hope. >> kier, thank you very much. jim cramer from "mad money." it's clear that the people in europe and in the u.k. and great

britain still don't know what this is going to mean. number one google search in the u.k. was eu. they are still trying to figure this out. >> they were completely unprepared. they thought it would be the other way. the government didn't know what it was doing in terms of convincing people they should stay. costs are going to be unbelievable. this country imports 50% of its goods. major misjudgment economically obviously other issues involved including the immigrants but in terms of the financial chaos and collapse, it's just one of the worst moves i've seen. >> if you're close to retiring or thinking about it or in retirement at this point, to hear the word chaos and that people don't understand the ramifications, how then do we process if you're close to that point in your life? >> what's good is chaos is over there which keeps our interest rates low. hard for people on a fixed income to be able to profit but if you're an investor thinking long-term, stocks look better because it's unlikely that federal reserve can raise rights. >> what's happening overnight in

other markets that may give us a clue on what we'll see on wall street today? >> banks over there are terrible. wouldn't be surprised it see a 2% decline on top of the 5% decline from friday. >> when you say over there, does that exist anymore in a global market? >> it does from the point of view that we're so much stronger than they are. our banks had to raise so much money. their banks never this to put up capital. they didn't do it right after the recession. >> jim cramer, thinanks. you'll come back next hour with ways to protect your money during that brexit. a new poll shows hillary clinton is widening her lead over donald trump in the presidential race. peter alexander is in washington. peter, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. let's get right to it. numbers you just saw, latest nbc/"wall street journal" national poll this morning shows donald trump losing ground now

clinton for taking wall street money. >> she has taken money from the groups and more to the point, she worries about them as a constituency. >> reporter: still with bernie sanders refusing to endorse hillary clinton yet and only grudgingly saying he'll even vote for her, warren is being vetted as a possible running mate but sources close to the campaign tell me that the front runner for that job is still virginia senator and former governor tim kaine. matt and tamron? >> thank you very much. the supreme court is expected to announce today a major decision on texas abortion law in what could be the most significant ruling on the issue in years. the law requires doctors performing the procedure to have admitting privileges at local hospitals and clinics to meet hospital grade standards. the question, do those requirements on abortion providers pose an undue burden on women?

devastating floods it president obama has declared a major disaster in west virginia following what the national weather service called a thousand year event. the flooding claimed at least 25 lives, destroyed homes and businesses and has left thousands without power. white silver springs was amongst places hardest hit with more rain likely, a flash flood watch is in effect today. another tough day for firefighters struggling to contain a massive fire in central california. it has burned at least 200 homes. firefighters made some progress on sunday but still hundreds of people lost everything in that fire. and it was a case of road rage at the racetrack over the weekend after two drivers ran into each other at nascar's camping world truck series race in illinois. both drivers getting into this epic fight. part boxing. part wrestling. part hockey game.

dishes. today chicken enchiladas are on the menu and my slow cooker version cuts calories in half. made chicken filling, add salsa, garlic powder, taco seasoning, onion, chicken, mix. cover and set on high for four hours or low for eight hours. shred chicken. make the enchiladas. preheat oven. coat bottom of man with sauce. place the seam underneath and repeat, repeat. when enchiladas are set, top with enchilada sauce and reduce fat cheese. bake for 15 minutes until cheese is hot and bubbly. the junk good version has 600 calories is out. my joy food version for 315 calories is in.

dorman, recovering from seven gunshot wounds, is expected to get out of the hospital. a gunman opened fire on the officer while he was conducting a drug investigation on friday. the suspected shooter remains in jail, charged with attempted murder. in northeast philadelphia, a man is under arrest, accused of murdering his girlfriend with a crossbow. police responded to the couple's home on willits road last night to find the woman bleeding heavily from the chest. she later died at the hospital. police picked up the boyfriend nearby without incident. he has not been charged. happening today, township leaders in hortium want to come up with a plan to have the best water quality standards in the country. there's a township meeting tonight at 7:00. they're going to consider a series of remediation options to address the chemicals found in drinking water. >> the wawa welcome america festival begins today. the spar spangled fun and entertainment on tap through july 4th in philadelphia. you can learn more by tapping

taking a look at headlines, all eyes on wall street after friday's more than 600-point drop in the dow. this morning prices were down again when the market opened. the british vote to leave the european union sent shock waves through the markets. they will work together to ensure economic stability and security. americans are eating healthier. the percentage of u.s. adults with poor diets fell between 1999 and 2012. servings of whole grains doubled and whole fruits are also up and soda and frozen food sales have fallen. if you're driving, you can expect lots of company.

aaa says a record 43 million americans will be traveling for the fourth of july and most of them, more than 36 million will be driving with gas prices lower than in ten years. aaa says this could be a record breaking year for summertime travel. bankrate.com out with the list of the best places to retire. here it is arlington, virginia, making the top of the list. the list takes into account cost of living, climate, quality and cost of health care, taxes and crime. rounding out the top five are franklin, tennessee, west des moines, iowa, sarasota, florida, and scottsdale, arizona. it seems there is an ebb and flow with popular music much like bob articulated well in the past. it's like politics. people have a certain thing. when they get tired of that thing, they want a different thing next. it makes sense if you look at patterns of popular music. there's kind of a dance era and then there's a folk era and then there's a rock 'n' roll era and i think there's been good time for us. if you go for nearly 20 years, you're bound to catch some of the good time somewhere. that's been our take on it. we just keep going. it will resonate somewhere. >> it resonates because you are so popular right now. you have the rock theme. you have folk. you have inspiration that includes disney. what do you mean by that? >> there's a lot to draw from. going back and if you look at other sounds when folk music is popular, there was less to draw from. at this point in history in 2016, we have a lot to draw
