we have new numbers. trump trailing hillary clinton by eight points, 49% to 41%. nbc's kristen welker has the latest on this. kristen, good morning. >> reporter: matt, good morning to you. with donald trump lagging in almost every poll, his campaign is trying to turn the page beefing up his staff and now looking at the possibility of softening one of his most divisive policies. trying to get his campaign back on track, there are signs this morning that donald trump could be backing away from one of his most controversial positions, a ban on muslims entering the united states. one of trump's policy directors now telling t"the wall street journal" that trump would only suspend temporarily immigration from areas. overnight, his spokesperson denying there was any change in policy but acknowledging the need for more details. >> mr. trump is going to refine

his policy putting out more specific details which everyone has been asking for, but there has been no change. >> reporter: trump first announced the ban after the san bernardino terror attacks in december and planned to ban all muslims. >> donald j. trump is calling for a total and complete shutdown of muslims entering the united states until our country's representatives can figure out what the hell is going on. >> reporter: the policy may have helped him win the primary but our latest nbc news/"wall street journal" poll shows 49% of registered voters oppose the muslim ban indicating it could hurt him in the general election. this comes as hillary clinton is taking steps to further unify her party. in ohio on monday firing up democrats in her first joint appearance with senator elizabeth warren. clinton is eyeing warren as a possible vp pick. on monday there was no sign of

the headlines and today her closest aide will be questioned under oath. nbc's andrea mitchell has the latest. good morning. >> dueling reports this morning. an issue donald trump has repeatedly raised during the campaign. the section of the 800-page republican report obtained by nbc news sheds new light on the breakdown in the military response to the benghazi attacks and the failure to have an evacuation plan. among the revelations, the report says 35 americans were saved not by local militias the u.s. thought were allies but fled but by former military officers from moammar gadhafi's regime. the dictator that the u.s. helped topple one year before. why was ambassador chris stevens

in such a dangerous police? >> chris chose to go to benghazi because he understood america needed to be represented there at the pivotal time. >> stevens was filling a temporary gap. most surprising, witnesses told the committee, stevens was also laying the groundwork for a visit by secretary clinton to benghazi the following month. a major focus of the report is a military failure to carry out orders from defense secretary leon panetta to deploy forces to benghazi and a force didn't get to tripoli until the next afternoon partly because of a previously reported failure to have airplanes ready but also because of conflicting orders from pentagon officials on whether marine should wear military uniforms or civilian attire because of diplomatic sensitivi sensitivities. one commander said during the course of three hours waiting on the plane, he and his marines

changed in and out of their uniforms four times. democrats on the committee have a sharply different view. even before seeing the republican report. democrats arguing the u.s. military could not have done anything differently on the night of the attacks that would have saved the lives of the four brave americans killed in benghazi. the democratic report acknowledges security measures in benghazi were woefully inadequate but blast the republicans report as a case study in how not to conduct a credible investigation. wasting, it says, more than $7 million of taxpayer money. today the clinton campaign continues to attack the committee's credibility calling it a partisan sham since its start. the highest ranking democrat on the benghazi committee tells nbc news this morning republicans didn't want them to check the report against the evidence that they had obtained. the state department insisting they made great progress for making posts safer since benghazi and one of clinton's closest aides is going to be questioned by a conservative

watchdog, judicial watch, in her role in setting up the private server. a lot more to come. >> thank you very much. let's bring in nbc news political analyst nicole wallace. nice to see you again. let's start with what andrea just talked about. the reports coming out of the house on benghazi and as a result on the e-mail server as well. hillary clinton's base made up their mind on this. donald trump's base made up their minds on this. how much impact in the middle? >> if you look at polls just out this week, hillary clinton lags donald trump on the question of honest and trustworthy and don't take my word for it. listen to hillary clinton on the stump yesterday where she gave pretty sober and straightforward explanation for why people might find her lacking in trustworthiness when she said i'm careful with my words not because i'm hiding something but because i'm careful with my words. it's a vulnerability. >> it's a vulnerability according to the polls but big

moment yesterday walking out on stage with elizabeth warren. i heard you this morning on "morning joe" saying you may break the internet with the comment but you compared elizabeth warren to sarah palin, someone know very well. >> hillary clinton and john mccain are sort of in the political word, steak and potatoes. substance. people who know how to govern. elizabeth warren like sarah palin pack arenas. >> you don't think she'll be the vp pick and you don't think she should be. >> i don't think she will pick her. we could be wrong. people who look at what hillary clinton's pick needs to satisfy don't think shoring up the far left flank of the party is her task come november. >> let us end on the subject of donald trump's change in stance on banning muslims entering the

country. is this an admission it works in the primaries and will not work in the general election? >> it's an admission that having a shoot from the hip, fly by the seat of your pants campaign is not going to get the job done come november. you still have republicans rebuking you week after week after week, you can't sign on donors, you can't sign on staff and you probably can't beat hillary clinton. >> nicole, thank you very much. good to see you. there's a new twist this morning in the crash of egyptair flight 804. french authorities opening a manslaughter investigation. nbc's bill neely has more on that for us. bill, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, tamron. there's a strong chance that the mystery of flight 804 can be solved. the flight recorders were recorded two weeks ago. they were damaged but now they've been cleaned of sea salt and memory chips extracted and data from the final moments of the plane is on the flight recorder.

we're sure of it they say. they're now working on the memory chip of the cockpit voice recorder and then all that data will be analyzed in egypt. also as you say, french authorities now say there is no evidence of terrorism and they're not looking into that opening instead an investigation into involuntary homicide, an accident. remember, no terrorist group has said it bombed the plane. for the families of the 66 onboard, the agony is prolonged but they may know more to explain why their loved ones died. we want to go back to the video we showed you at the top of the show. a bp natural gas plant rocked by an explosion overnight in mississippi. there were two employees on duty at the time but they were in an explosion proof room. they were not injured. officials say residents who live nearby were asked to leave their homes as a precaution. an investigation into how that explosion occurred now under

way. to that sad news overnight that legendary women's basketball coach pat summitt has passed away. she coached the team to eight national championship in her 38 seasons. she was the winningest coach in division 1 college basketball history. summit was diagnosed with early onset dementia back in 2011 and stepped down after coaching the lady vols for one more season. that year she was the recipient of the presidential medal of freedom. her son tyler issued a statement saying his mother died peacefully in knoxville surrounded by those who love her most. pat summitt was 64 years old. >> women who play for her have nothing but incredible things to say about her. we want to talk about a consumer alert involving a very big recall. ikea recalling tens of millions

of chests and dressers. nbc's tom costello has been following the story for more than a year. tom, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the consumer product safety commission says every two weeks in this country a child dies under falling tvs and furniture and now ikea stopped selling a unit it says is especially prone to that. it's important. it's asking parents if you have one of these dressers or chests, stop using those unless they're anchored to the wall. the numbers are heartbreaking. every 24 minutes a child is injured from falling furniture or tvs. every two weeks, a child dies. this video from the consumer product safety commission shows how fast it can happen. now, one of the nation's biggest furniture retailers is announcing a major recall. 29 million pieces of ikea furniture most sold under ikea's malm name. >> children see something they're trying to get that's

been left on. they start to climb. the unit falls over. we've had deaths associated with these types of unit because of it and 33,000 emergency room vi visits a year. >> reporter: three deaths in just the past 2 1/2 years including a 2 year old who pulled his dresser down on himself. >> i didn't see him anywhere. i went over and kind of pulled everything apart and i saw the little top of his head trapped between the dresser and the edge of the bed. >> reporter: the dresser was not anchored to the wall. this morning ikea is asking anyone with a malm clhest or dresser to stop using it if it's not anchored to wall. they'll provide a full refund if customers return the furniture. >> we would like to ask as a customer to make sure that all chest of drawers are properly

attached to the wall. if not, take them out of the room. >> reporter: for the family now suing ikea, every day still brings heartbreak but the ikea recall is his legacy. >> this is the worst thing that's ever happened in our lives. >> reporter: a lot of families say their landlords if they're renting won't let them anchor something to the wall because they don't want holes in the wall but safety advocates say there's no excuse. you can patch the hole later. don't take a risk on your child's safety and they say if you can't anchor to the wall, bring it back to ikea. back to you. >> great information. tom, thank you very much. to the desperate rescue effort under way this morning to save a massive blue whale tangled in fishing line off the southern california coast. steve patterson is in los angeles with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: the young whale was spotted about four miles off the coast by people on a whale watching trip. rescuers made at least six attempts to cut the lines

attached to at that wha-- that whale but they were unsuccessful so today a team of experts will attempt again. a rescue is under way for a massive blue whale. a team of experts trying to figure out how to free the young whale tangled in fishing lines off the coast of florida. a crew on a whale watching cruise spotted the whale in distress. it's large tail caught in fishing traps meant for lobsters or crabs. they returned to the whale with a rescue team who worked to cut the whale free using a knife on the 25-foot pole. >> we got pretty close. i would say that we were within six inches. >> reporter: as dust fell, the whale disappeared into the sea. >> that's when the whale just decided that was it. he had enough.

he wasn't going to let us anywhere near it and just vanished. >> reporter: experts say it's rare for blue whales to get tangled in fishing gear because they don't usually search for good so close to the shore but noaa reports 40 entanglements since january. and officials are hoping that if the whale is found again, they can renew efforts to set it free. >> that's all we were really trying to do is get the worst of it all so that the whale had a chance. >> reporter: officials are now asking boaters to be aware and look for the whale today. the whale has a bright orange buoy attached to it along with two smaller buoys. tamron? >> steve, thank you. sad. >> mr. roker, a check of the weather? >> we have a little cloudy sky out here in the northeast and it's part of a system that's going to cause probably some airport delays throughout the northeast later today. you can see wet weather stretching from new england all of the way down into the mid-atlantic states all part of a front we have a risk of strong

nbc 10 news starts now. good tuesday morning. i'm tracy davidson. just about 7:30. let's get the forecast from nbc 10 first alert meteorologist bill henley, tracking rain for today. bill? >> we've seen steady rain at the shore. rain drops on the lens at the camera in new jersey. the lehigh valley seeing showers, too, 70 degrees, right now cloudy. in philadelphia, 73 degrees, into the 80s this afternoon. as we go into the day, more likely to see occasional showers. late this afternoon, a possibility of showers and thunderstorms. it will combine to keep things cooler at the shore. 79 degrees this afternoon. the rain right now in central delaware and southern delaware, starting to taper off there. it's still falling in atlantic city. the heavy downpours at this time are offshore.

been patients who love their pediatrician because they've grown up with them and wanted to stay. i remember i still went to see my pediatrician when i came home from medical school. >> for most people it comes down to having a doctor you really trust with or without the lollipop. something else that could drive the trend under the affordable care act, people can still stay under their parents' insurance plan until the age of 26. combine that with shortage of general practitioners and many are just simply choosing to stick with a doctor they know and who know them best. matt? >> natalie, thanks very much. doc, good to see you. is there any real medical reason why you need to leave your pediatrician at the age of 21? >> that's a good question. that's really the million dollar question. i think the position of the three medical groups that have come together to give us a little bit of a recommendation on this is really that you want to ensure that people are

getting what we would think of as medically and developmentally appropriate care. a quick example would be age 21 you start cervical cancer screening for women. are pediatricians going to perform that function? >> are they trained for that? are they trained for patient care past the age of 21? >> right now strictly speaking pediatricians are trained to take care of people, including cholesterol and obesity and stuff you would think of as applying to adults until the age of 21. of course as natalie pointed out with the affordable care act, people are extending coverage with pediatricians and they can handle that. >> let's talk about other good reasons to change over. you're moving. >> if you think about 18 to 21, that fits nicely with your time that you go to college. maybe you're not coming home for breaks all the time. maybe your insurance is changing. that's another reason you might switch your insurance. 23 year old looking for a

pediatrician in all likelihood not. starting a family. i think that's self-explanatory. okay. and then needing a specialist. of course. if you have an autoimmune disease, and those doctors can perform the function of being a primary care doctor for you. >> it may seem like an obvious question when you go from a pediatrician do you go to primary care physician? >> there are two people under that umbrella. an internist which deals with adults or a family physician. i think family practice medicine is a really nice and appealing thing for a lot of people. they take care of people throughout the span of their lifetime from infancy into old age. also some ob-gyns can perform the function of a primary care physician. the take home is that just because you're graduating from high school or graduating from college, you're not graduating from medical care. we want to transition people

the dredging station is simple. the crucial thing is i add some garlic salt and pepper to my breadcrumbs. what people don't realize they do so often is they forget to season every layer of their dish which is really important. you don't want just the top to be seasoned. you want every layer to be seasoned. and then you just dredge into the flour. dip into the egg, shake off excess and dredge in your bread dru breadcrumbs. you have perfect chicken cut le cutlets. light olive oil. sunflower oil. nothing strong like extra virgin because it will burn up and be terrible. >> how long does it take to cook? >> about two minutes on each side and that's it. what you do is once you have

your beautiful cutlets ready, layer them with your favorite marinara sauce. you layer your sauce. do a trio of cheeses. why not. it's a parm. at the end of the day we love that from the mozzarella. i love sharpness. >> this is going in the oven look at what temperature for how long? >> doesn't matter until everything is golden and bubbly. and that's what it looks like for a side of spaghetti. >> going to eggplant parm. >> no garlic powder and no breadcrumbs. get yourself a firm egg appellant and slice it nice and thin. i've done a terrible job. the culinary crew does an amazing job. no breadcrumbs.
