tv   NBC10 News at 4pm  NBC  June 28, 2016 4:00pm-5:01pm EDT

4:00 pm
right now on the -- where exactly this threat and this attack came from. we continue to work this story. we'll break in as events warrant to update you. and of course, we'll have full coverage on the "nbc nightly news." for now, i'm lester holt, nbc news, new york. nbc 10 breaking news. we're following breaking news coming out of turkey. two explosions have rocked istanbul's airport. we're just getting word there are at least ten people dead, and more than 40 people hurt. no one has yet claimed responsibility, but some witnesses are saying it was a triple suicide attack. nbc news spoke with one witness
4:01 pm
who saw a bomber blow himself and then heard a third explosion. there are also reports of gunfire at the scene. this is happening in the international terminal at the airport at a very busy time of the day. we'll continue to monitor the breaking news story and bring you any updates as soon as we get them. in the meantime, 20 minutes of nonstop news continues with the threat of severe weather here at home. most areas seeing clouds and rain. but the first alert radar is tracking storms that could bring hail, damaging winds and also flooding to parts of the area. first alert is in effect in several parts where the storms could hit. >> or weather technology is pinpointing those neighborhoods that could be the biggest impacted. glenn "hurricane" schwartz is tracking those storms. glenn, what do you see? >> yeah, denise, in the next hour or to the threat is limited to the first portion of the area. the first alert is for lehigh
4:02 pm
valley, berks county, chester, montgomery, bucks and also delaware counties. that goes until 10:00 p.m. it could possibly be extended into the philadelphia area, depending on how these storms maintain themselves over the next few hours. possible severe thunderstorm with damaging winds, and some hail along with the downpours. we had some rain earlier today from delaware and south jersey. that has moved out. we have thunderstorms obviously across portions of central pennsylvania. they are moving to the east. now, the main storm, as you can see, is near harrisburg, moving straight east toward reading. and at the current speed it would take nearly the hour for it to get there. these storms are not moving as fast as normal severe thunderstorms do move. so that could be helpful here. there is a severe thunderstorm warning just east of harrisburg
4:03 pm
for that cell that is moving into berks county right now. further to the south, we just have a few sprinkles possible. and everything is fine there. but the future cast does show at least scattered showers and thunderstorms through the early evening across parts of the area. we'll continue to keep you updated on that and have more updates through the next couple of hours. >> glenn, these storms could pop up with little warning. our first alert weather team will be tracking them for you throughout the afternoon, of course. they'll bring us updates on the air every 15 minutes and send out weather alerts on the nbc 10 app. now, to a proposed gas tax hike in new jersey that could have hundreds of thousands of drivers paying more at the pump just in time for the july 4th holiday weekend. early this morning, state lawmakers passed a 23 cents per gallon gas tax increase that governor chris christie could
4:04 pm
sign by friday. new jersey always has had the lowest gas prices in our tri-state region. today, the average is $2.03. $2.18 in delaware. but if the new tax passes, new jersey won't be the cheapest anymore. today's average, for example, would be hiked to $2.26. nbc 10 south jersey bureau reporter sydney long has more on the reason for the proposed increase, and reaction from drivers. sydney? >> reporter: well, denise, of course, one reason for this hike right now is to fix new jersey's deteriorating roads. the reason it's all playing out in trenton as we speak, because state lawmakers are working to finalize the budget before the start of the fiscal year which is now just three days away, july 1st. and in order to offset what drivers may pay, a little bit more here at the pumps, governor christie is offering a fairness package. it could save you elsewhere when you go shopping.
4:05 pm
>> unfortunately, the thing that we all have to deal with. but it definitely made me fill up my tank today. >> reporter: with an hour back and forth for work each day, akeen and dozens of other drivers aren't happy with trenton lawmakers right now. >> definitely not something people would be excited about. >> reporter: paying 23 cents more at the pumps. governor chris christie struck a deal with the lawmakers in the a assemb assembly, in exchange for decrease of sales tax from 7% to 6%. that would be phased in over two years. in turn, the gas hike will replenish the state's nearly dry transportation trust fund. and push more money towards fixing roads and bridges. >> there's a lot of flat tires, a lot of people that get damaged rims on their cars. that's also frustrating as well. >> reporter: aaa mid-atlantic calls it long overdue, that will not deter holiday travelers if
4:06 pm
they vote yes on thursday. >> right now we don't see it will have an immediate impact. people have already planned their trips. they're looking forward to their summer vacations. >> reporter: a 15,000 miles per year with a 20-gallon tank equates to 3 bucks a week. anyone who uses our roads will pay it. >> we've got a lot of drivers who come into our state that take advantage of our cheaper gas prices. and that will continue. >> reporter: this deal does not come at a completely awful time. considering this time last summer we were all paying about 50 cents more per gallon at the pump. we did reach out to several senators today. senate president sweeney as well as diane allen who was just trying to reach me back as our story was on the air just now, so we will hear from those senators and find out how they may vote come this thursday. live in gloster township, sydney long, nbc 10 news.

threat of any kind of severe storms. you can see we've got a bit of a line near harrisburg, another little piece up towards scranton. this is all moving in the general direction of the east. it's not moving real fast. mostly severe weather moves very rapidly. this is only moving at 25 miles an hour. and this is starting to move a little bit more toward the southeast here. it's going through harrisburg, and if it continues to move in that general direction, it would be near ex iter about 5:50, pottstown 6:46 king much prussia. that's pretty long. long time between now and when that storm would hit. so a lot of things that can happen here. and the future computer showing that we do have the continued threat of showers and storms as we go through the 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. hours, up to 8:00.
4:33 pm
there's the storms going right through philadelphia area and in through wilmington. we're talking about heavy rain, and a good bit of lightning with some of these storms. not as many reports of gusty winds, of course, the storm just isn't moving fast enough. there's the storm's 10:00 in parts of delaware. and then things start to fade away, as we go through the night, setting us up for nice weather. we'll talk more about what happens after the storms move through. and the big weekend in a few minutes. >> these storms could pop up with little warning, but our first alert weather team will be tracking them for you throughout the afternoon and bring us updates every 15 minutes on the air. also, sending out weather aletters op the nbc 10 app. a woman says problems with her utility company left her turning to nbc 10 responds for help. >> she believes peco is responsible for damaging her property. and harry is here with her

4:46 pm
and what was approaching reading has really weakened, as you can see. things have changed just in the last half hour. now, with this cluster, it continues moving to the east, that would reach coatesville, close to 6:00 tonight. near 7:30 in philadelphia. these storms are moving much more slowly than typical storms do at this time of the year, or if they're going to be severe. i think the main threat will be the lightning, and some very, very heavy rain. here we go. this afternoon, the futurecast, it keeps this line intact, brings the storm into the philadelphia area, between 7:00 and 8:00. as you saw, because it's only moving at 20, 25 miles an hour, it's going to take longer than the normal line. so it's going to last longer, too. there's 9:00 tonight. and it's still in parts of delaware, extreme south jersey. so it's not going to be until later tonight where we actually start drying out.
4:47 pm
and drier air will be moving in by tomorrow morning, setting us up for some pretty nice weather. and speaking of nice weather, after some rough going earlier in the day, it's getting a little nicer at the shore, but it's still on the cool side, only 72 in atlantic city. the ocean temperature, 71 degrees. that's the most important number on there, because that's going to affect the air temperatures as we head through the weekend. tomorrow we have pretty good conditions here. reading 84. no rain tomorrow. lower humidity. it's going to be a comfortable, beautiful day. robbinsville at 86. close to 80 at the shore before the sea breeze kicks in. the ten-day outlook, we've got another round of showers and storms coming. that's on friday. tomorrow and thursday are looking great.
4:48 pm
friday we have the thunderstorms. then we have drier air coming in for saturday. near 90 degrees. humidity up a little bit. sunday, we're keeping at least partly cloudy. there's going to be moisture to the south. the question is just how far south does it go. as you see, through fourth of july, we're continuing to keep temperatures in the upper 80s, without real high humidity. there is a better chance of the sunshine the farther north you go. so that's what's going to make this forecast a little bit tricky. so it's not a slam dunk. but at the moment, conditions do favor pretty good weather over the holiday weekend. nothing too hot or too humid or too stormy. >> hopefully the rain will stay down to the south. >> right. >> thanks, glenn. ready to strike, that's the message from casino workers in atlantic city.
4:49 pm
