agree on is the gas stacks hike. the point of contention are all of the tax breaks put in the plan to sweeten the deal. so this means if you drive an suv in new jersey, you could be paying an extra $4 very soon every time you fill up. the senate's decision not to vote on the gas tax means the future of their jobs working construction on new jersey's roads and bridges remains uncertain. >> the fund runs out of money, it will make the roads and bridges be very dangerous, and put thousands of people out of work. >> reporter: coming up with the money for the nearly bankrupt transportation fund is the reason behind the assembly's proposal to increase the gas tax by 23 cents per gallon. >> we're going to lose business, i believe so. everybody coming from philly just to get their gas, we're going to lose that. >> reporter: as the tradeoff to ease the pain at the pump, the plan backed by governor christie will also trim the sales tax from 7% to 6%.

and eliminate the tax on retirement income. >> the senate feels it's too expensive. and we're trying to find a solution. >> reporter: senator sweeney said overall there won't be enough money to pay for the pensions and education. so it's back to the negotiating table with the assembly and governor. the pressure is on before money runs out and possibly forces these construction workers out of a job. >> i expect we'll get to a conclusion where we come to an agreement. you know, sometimes crises brings people together. >> reporter: i reached out to governor christie's office to get his response. his staff said his comments from yesterday still stand where he basically told the senate to get the job done. he said he was ready to sign the assembly's plan. today, now, the idea initially was that the transportation fund would run out of money tomorrow. but senator sweeney said that fund could last until august. reporting live in trenton, andrea kline thomas, nbc 10 news.

now, your nbc 10 first alert neighborhood weather. >> turning to the weather now, the holiday weekend approaches. a live look at the philadelphia museum of art where crews are really busy getting things set for the fourth of july festivities. it's all part of the wawa welcome america festival. as you know, nbc 10 is the official media sponsor of the fest. >> chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz is joining us now to tell us how the forecast is taking shape. glenn? >> always a lot of pressure for these big holiday weekends. and it looks like much of this weekend is going to be really, really nice. that's the way it has been today. 85 degrees in philadelphia now. we've got lots of sunshine across the area. down to 79 in some of the suburbs north and west of philly. 83 degrees in much of new jersey. we have, well, nothing on the radar close by, but we do have clouds, and it will be increasing later tonight. there's some of the showers in wisconsin. that may be affecting us tomorrow. as we go through the night

tonight, it's a beautiful evening. temperatures dropping down through the 70s. and into the 60s. by 11:00. as you can see, mostly clear skies. by morning, though, we even have a chance of some showers. even in philadelphia area, and at the shore, and as we go through the day, especially into the afternoon, we have showers and thunderstorms. some of that could be very heavy, with a good bit of lightning and gusty winds, too. the rest of the weekend forecast coming up in just a few minutes. >> okay, glenn, we'll see you soon. to the jersey shore now, where wildwood officials say the show must go on. the town is getting ready for what it expects to be a very big weekend, despite the surprise cancellation of a concert featuring the philly pops. >> randy, bottom line, what everyone wants to know, the party is still on, right? >> reporter: the party must go on, and businesses here like the hot spot restaurant are hoping thousands of people come out today. you can see a lot of them here already.

but as you guys mentioned, they won't be seeing this very popular philly pops concert that was canceled at the last minute. as thousands descend on wildwood, for independence day weekend -- >> good for business obviously. >> reporter: -- restaurants like hot spots on the boardwalk are gearing up for the busiest three days of the summer. >> we're as ready as we can be. >> reporter: this year families won't get to see one of wildwood's most popular events, the philly pop salute to the troops concert has been canceled. organizers say they only sold some 85 tickets. last year, the event was completely free, and drew thousands. >> unfortunately we did have to cancel the philly pops concert on saturday, given the low ticket sales and the feedback from the community that they would like a more local talent, they would like a free event. >> reporter: but the big headliner, tim mcgraw, will still play on monday. crews expect the day setting up the day as mcgraw posted a message to fans on facebook.

>> i can't wait to spend the fourth of july with you in wildwood, new jersey. come out and help us celebrate america. >> reporter: tickets to that main event are still on sale. and die-hard fans are already showing up early here on the boardwalk. >> very patriotic. i couldn't ask for a better person to come to our great wild beaches, that are the best in the country. >> reporter: that tim mcgraw concert will cost you money. you have to pay to get in. if you're a family looking for free fun, check out some events, including a beach baconfest, a battle of the bands, and of course, the big fireworks right outside on the beach. randy gyllenhaal, nbc 10 news. tonight a strike has now been averted at four atlantic city casinos where workers were threatening to walk off the job this very weekend. the latest to strike a deal, the tropicana. the only casino still without a deal is the trump taj mahal. workers at that casino could still go on strike tomorrow if a deal isn't reached.

we know the union has been trying to get back concessions it gave to the casinos when they were struggling for cash. we have new information just in in the past few minutes about the shooting death of that 13-year-old boy yesterday in east germantown. two teenagers are now charged in connection with that shooting. police say a group of kids were playing with a gun when it went off last night. we just learned the teens say they found the gun and bullets in an abandoned house, assembled the gun, loaded it and then fired it. the 15-year-old friend of the victim is charged with involuntary manslaughter. a 17-year-old is charged with recklessly endangering another person. 35 years behind bars, that's how much time a kidnapper will serve in prison for snatching a philadelphia woman from the sidewalk and forcing her into the trunk of his car. delvin barnes was sentenced in federal court today. the attack in november of 2014 was captured on this surveillance video. and sparked a three-day manhunt that spanned several states.

law enforcement eventually tracked barnes down in maryland. the fbi and prosecutors say the victim used survival skills to save her life. after court today, we asked her grandmother about her granddaughter's will to survive. >> she was afraid, of course. but she also -- i don't know where she got it from, but she said i had to make him think we were friends. i didn't want him to hurt me. she spent a lot of time in his trunk thinking about how am i going to approach this and what am i going to do to remain alive. >> in court today, the victim told the judge she suffers from ptsd, and has flashbacks, but is trying to move on with her life. members of the fire department are in trouble this evening after buying what they thought was heroin. state police say they got a tip that 39-year-old eric funk and 33-year-old matthew daugherty were buying heroin outside the station. so police set up a sting. and they say both men fell for it, buying fake heroin.

tonight both men are free on bail. an 18-year-old is charged in the hit-and-run death of a school superintendent. steven mayor and his dog were hit and killed while jogging on robbinsville road. the teenager who police say was behind the wheel of that car was allegedly talking on her phone when that crash happened. tonight get ready to see dozens of dompgies around philadelphia as we get closer to the democratic national convention. the host committee for the democratic national convention began placing the donkeys around town. one for each state, including washington, d.c., and the six u.s. territories. that one right there represents colorado. and it's at the union league of philadelphia. ed rendell was there to introduce these new sculptures and also had a warning to anyone thinking about messing with them. >> every one of our 57 dompgies is under even manual or

technological surveillance. if anybody messes with the donkeys, there will be hell to pay. i may visit them in their home. >> the donkeys will be on display in philly until september 9th. taking a live look at the wells fargo center in south philadelphia which will host the convention from july 25th through the 28th. there will be events at the pennsylvania convention center. the dnc is expected to bring some 50,000 people to philadelphia. tonight, nbc news is confirming that new jersey governor chris christie is on the short list of potential republican vice presidential candidates. christie is being vetted for the job. you may remember back in early may, governor christie was named the chairman of a transition team for donald trump. that team is in charge of assembling a team of experts on domestic and foreign policy. and will look to fill cabinet positions if trump is elected president.

the wawa welcome america festival rolls on. a live look at the ben franklin parkway where crews are getting everything ready for the fourth of july festivities. quite a few people wandering the cities with full bellies tonight, because it's wawa hoagie day. they estimate 2.2 miles of its hoagies will be eaten today. they're free. it's all part of wawa welcome america. >> you would only need 1.8 miles of hoagies to cover the length of the wildwood boardwalk. to center philadelphia now. a path of hoagies right down the ben franklin parkway from the art museum to city hall, just a

weekend festivities. we may have some weather issues tomorrow evening. but much of the holiday weekend is still looking great. we've been pretty fortunate with the weekends this summer. we've had temperatures in the 80s today, 85 in philadelphia. now we got up to 86 degrees for the high. not nearly as warm at the shore. the wind coming in off the ocean, 75 in atlantic city, 76 in holgate, and 82 in may's landing. four or five degrees above normal this time of the year. a lot of sunshine across the area. the moisture is far back to the west, around chicago, or even west of chicago. but we've got storms coming in on friday. that is a good bet. there could even be some as we go through the night and into the morning hours. you see that with the future

cast. there are showers there. even for the morning rush. maybe even at the beaches. then in the afternoon, we have more showers and storms, perhaps forming some lines, which could indicate some strong gusty winds, and a lot of lightning. and there we are at 6:00. that's some pretty heavy action. now, not everybody is getting it. but there's more back up to the north and west. so, yeah, tomorrow's going to be a pretty active day, with some showers in the morning, some in the afternoon, some in the early evening. and late at night, we finally dry out. but there will be real nice weather over the weekend. another great weekend around here. this is pretty good fortune here. we've got low humidity coming on saturday. some clouds on sunday. and a lot of clouds on monday. that should be the cloudiest day. that's a day where the best chance of any kind of showers at the jersey shore or delaware.

and at those areas, they'll be seeing increasing clouds on sunday. saturday is the best day overall for everybody. penn's landing by 8:00 tomorrow, we could see some thunderstorms. but i expect it to be drying out as the night goes on. and the fourth of july, i expect the clouds to be increasing. of course, that makes things a little more comfortable, if you see clouds without the rain. and we may very well see that on the fourth of july. the neighborhoods seeing thunderstorms tomorrow. reading at 84 degrees. robbinsville 86. 70s at the shore. because of that sea breeze. speaking of the shore, it's going to be warmer at the delaware beaches than it will be at the jersey shore. that's the one thing you can count on. the other thing is pretty warm ocean. more coming up at 11:00 tonight. >> hurricane, see you down the

i'm john clark. the phillies back home tomorrow night to face the world series champions the royals. they went 5-4 on their trip. hopefully they packed their offense for their plane ride back to philly. they scored 57 runs. how about 110 hits. one of the best offenses in baseball. over that nine-game trip.

the phils are scoring a lot more runs on the road. at home they have the fewest runs in baseball. hopefully this gets them going at citizens bank park. >> it was great to get the offense rolling first and foremost. i think we'll bring a lot of confidence back home with the lineup. in our home ballpark, that's something we need to do. we haven't done it lately. i think that's going to be important moving into july. have a real strong month offensively for this club. >> a terrible injury for phillies pitching prospect matt imhauf in florida. he lost his eye after training after a game. a metal piece snapped off the equipment and crushed his eye. he said, quote, like a grape. matt seems to be in good spirits. he sent out the instagram today. he decided to have his eye removed. he also had facial fractures. he says he's going to persevere and says it takes a lot more than this to take me down. the nfl will reportedly be suspending johnny manziel for four games, mcclain for ten,

firefighters, and to see what he's going through right now. see how much of a warrior he is. this guy's walking around right now. it's pretty amazing. i'm sure kids are going to be looking up to him. >> that shows you what sports can do. inspiring each other. back to you. breaking news from sky 4 along interstate 95, northeast philadelphia. we're looking at this right here. crews on the scene of this accident. it involves four vehicles. look at the smoke there. there's also a car, one of those cars on fire right now. this is happening in the southbound lanes of 95 near the cottman avenue exit. traffic is at a standstill right there. we don't have any word on injuries. but all southbound lanes right now of 95 as you see right there are blocked. so it's going to be slow going this evening during the remnants of the evening rush. again, this bad crash and a car fire on interstate 95. we'll be right back.
