rain. we've got more showers and storms in south jersey. we will have more in delaware as well. so far the jersey shore has missed this. but you're going to get some of this activity later on during the evening. in delaware, again, we're seeing less activity here than what we're seeing in pennsylvania. and in central new jersey. but we're going to be getting some of that as well. during the evening hours. but by tomorrow, things are drastically different. this is not a signal of what's going to happen over the weekend. we have spectacular weather coming tomorrow. i'll get into more detail on that, and the rest of the weekend, in a few minutes. >> because things are going to be drastically different, keep it here, storms could pop up with little warning. our weather team will be tracking them throughout the aft afternoon and bring us updates every 15 minutes. you can also find them on the

nbc 10 app. the fourth of july weekend, the shore exodus continues this afternoon. this is a look at the ben franklin bridge as people head for the coast. they're going to have company when they get out there. cape may earlier today, plenty of people already hitting the beach. as we get ready to celebrate our independence. and what better place to celebrate than our nation's birthplace. a live look at the ben franklin parkway where crews are getting set for the fourth of july concert and fireworks, part of the wawa welcome america festival. we have team coverage of the holiday weekend. cydney long is soaking up the sun down the shore. >> reporter: the wawa welcome america festival, tim joins us live. >> reporter: tonight there's an outdoor movie at the northern liberty. and the orchestra playing at penn's landing. this barge will soon make its way out in the river to make a

fireworks show there. covering it for the rain, by the way. all over the city some people didn't have to work today. they just had more free family fun. of course, everyone's dancing. go forth and get fit, yet another free event part of wawa welcome america. a century overload for the kids in fairmount park. >> we come here every year. >> reporter: the big historic wood slide, a place where kids can come and burn some preholiday weekend energy. >> that's what i want them to do, run, run, run so they'll get tired. >> reporter: sheila was here reading to kids. i've run into her a lot this week. >> there's 35 events in eight days. i think i've been to almost every one of them. >> reporter: she's probably going to make her way here, too. wawa welcome america picking up admission costs at the african-american museum today. >> we have had already over 1,800 people in this building. that compares only to martin luther king jr. holiday for us.

we'll get you ready for all of this weekend's festivities at 7:00 tonight. right now cydney long has the awful task of being at the beach today. >> she lucked out the past few days with the beach glow. she's live in ocean city. a big crowd there already, cydney. >> reporter: oh, it definitely is, guys. it was bumper to bumper on the parkway. take a look. it's already bumper to bumper here on the boardwalk in ocean city. no storms yet. but the cloudy haze lifted a little better since 3:00 or so when we first arrived today. we couldn't even see the music pier out here this morning. but you needed your sun block to reserve your spot on the beach. we found so many families here from out of state enjoying what we all know and love. >> we're loving it. it's just beautiful. it's refreshing. the water's nice. the weather's nice, the sand is nice. >> reporter: they're from san

antonio and making memories this holiday weekend. their sand castle competition came after a morning of chasing hermit crabs into hiding. a music lesson by the surf. a soccer tournament family style. others taking a snooze in the warm salt air. >> bead making, paper clip competition, a lot of fun. >> reporter: there are events planned all weekend long. then there are new encounters on the boardwalk. >> aliens and corners, and go around. >> reporter: in addition to the summer haze, we went behind the scenes of the mirror maze and encounters, which opened monday, just in time for the fourth. there's also a james bond and time freak attraction. >> like a 360 whac-a-mole. you've got to run around and press it. you've got to go back and forth and press all the buttons. >> reporter: a good workout? >> yeah, i broke a sweat. >> reporter: for little annabell, she just celebrated her birthday, a precursor to

nbc 10 was on the boardwalk where union members hit the picket line this morning here. the workers couldn't agree with the casino on a new contract. the union said it's looking for the damataj to restore the concessions made during the tough times. >> we're disappointed the taj mahal did not recognize the serious contributions that these workers bring to the industry, to the company. >> i haven't had a raise in the last ten years. 20 cents raise. $2 a year. that's not enough. >> yesterday the union struck deals with other casinos, including bali's, caesar's, harrah's and the tropicana. we reached out to the taj mahal for comment, but we haven't heard back. bidding a final farewell. the body of former eagles head coach buddy ryan was laid to rest. here's a video where buddy's family gathered earlier today for a funeral mass and paid their respects in kentucky.

his two sons in this video. current nfl coaches, rex and rob ryan. after winning the super bowl with the bears, buddy ryan became head coach of the eagles taking them to the play-offs in three of his five seasons. he became a hero to eagles fans all across our region. despite never winning a play-off game here in philadelphia. ryan died on tuesday at the age of 85. read more about his life and legacy on nbc10.com, and the nbc 10 app. november 8th is election day. it will also be the day for special elections to fill shacka fatah's seat in congress. pennsylvania governor tom wolf ordered the special election for the state's second congressional district. fatah resigned last month after a jury convicted him on federal corruption charges. the democrat held his seat in congress for more than 20 years. the nation's top prosecutor said she will accept any federal recommendation even if it means

federal charges for clinton. loretta lynch spoke about her decision in aspen, colorado, today. her announcement came after a meeting with bill clinton at the phoenix airport. lynch said she regrets that meeting saying she wouldn't do it again. she said the meeting will have no impact, though, on the e-mail investigation. >> i've always said that this matter would be handled by the career people who are independent. they live from administration to administration. their role is to follow the facts, and follow the law. >> the justice department and the fbi looking into hillary clinton's handling of classified e-mails using a private server, while the democratic presidential candidate was secretary of state. republican white house candidate donald trump had more to say about clinton's e-mails at a conservative summit in denver today. trump joined former vice presidential candidate sarah palin in blasting clinton and the justice department they accused of protecting her. >> to have a thing like that happen is so sad. hillary is so guilty.

she's so guilty. you can read them right off here. >> trump said bill clinton's meeting with loretta lynch opened up what he called a pan tor a's box in the matter. now, to the terror in turkey. the u.s. and other nations say they now know who directed the deadly bombings at the istanbul airport. the suspected is identified as a man from chechnya. swedish authorities say he served more than a year in prison for smuggling weapons in 2008. he's accused of organizing the suicide bombings on tuesday that killed 44 people and injured hundreds of others. authorities don't know where he is. happening right now. we're getting a briefing on holiday weekend security at philadelphia international airport. here's a live view of the airport where delaware center carver toured the terminal and checkpoints. thousands of visitors are expected to move through the airport this weekend.

the democratic national convention later this month. day after new jersey failed to raise its gas tax to fund road work, there's new fallout today. governor chris christie ordered all state transportation projects shut down this weekend. christie issued an executive order calling on projects to stop by 11:59 p.m. tomorrow. that's about 32 hours from now. it's in response to the state senate refusing to take action on a proposed gas tax thursday. earlier this week the assembly approved a bill which would increase the gas tax by 23 cents a gallon. the plan would also gradually cut the sales tax from 7% to 6% and eliminate the tax on retirement income. now to the discovery that could get hundreds of dui defendants off the hook in philadelphia. the district attorney is reviewing the indicatiocases af problem was found with the breathalyzers police were using. andrea kline thomas went to find out what may happen next.

>> reporter: attorney justice kelly defends dui cases. his research for one client may help hundreds more fight their charges. >> we focus on the machines that they have to use. what machines they have -- the regulations they have to file. >> reporter: he found in january philadelphia police used an expired breathalyzer machine. they're conducted as maintenance a few times a year. officers did not realize the issue until kelly brought it up on wednesday. >> the machine itself is still accurately reading and calculating. it was used in a testing process. >> reporter: police say the readings did not change before and after the solution expired. so kelly and other attorneys now question the accuracy of those readings, as they ask the court to throw out the breathalyzer tests. >> obviously it helps the defense. for example, if you get convicted of a-1 only without a breathalyzer and it's your first offense, the fine goes from

$1,000 to $300. >> reporter: they retested the machines and did not have any problems. they're also implementing more oversight. so this doesn't happen again. hundreds of cases over the past six months are now under review. and some are being challenged. >> we need our roads safe, but people's privileges and rights have to be honored. >> reporter: nbc 10 news. more than a dozen suspects are under address this afternoon after a state investigation targeted illegal drug activity in philadelphia. today pennsylvania attorney general kathleen cain announced the results of a grand jury drug investigation that began in 2009. nbc 10 was in southwest philadelphia where state solicitor general credited state and local drug enforcement agents with working together. >> we're combating these cases one by one, not with street level like we had a press

conference last week. also with the sub suppliers, the money launderers, the suppliers here in pennsylvania, as well as the suppliers over in california. >> caine said the pipeline leads from the u.s. into mexico supplying heroin, cocaine, meth and other illegal drugs. take a look at this. a nasal spray just like this was able to save a local man's life in one minute. that's what happened in lehigh county yesterday where allentown police reversed a heroin overdose using the drug narcan. the police found the man lying in the middle of an intersection thursday morning. they said they were able to revive him in just a minute using the nasal spray. right now, the u.s. coast guard said an 8-year-old boy is in critical condition after he fell into a pool while on a cruise. this happened just off the coast of hudson county aboard the anthem of the seas. coast guard officials say the boy was in the water yesterday for about 8 to 10 minutes before

crews found him. the boy received cpr onboard the ship which changed course and sailed towards bayon. royal caribbean is providing support to the boy's family. this is just the latest in a string of incidents involving the anthem of the seas. back in february the cruise ship had to head back to port after it sailed into severe weather. meanwhile, people onboard were dealing with a norovirus outbreak that led to 109 passengers getting sick. we have new surveillance video this afternoon of a man that police say stabbed and robbed a cab driver in camden on wednesday. police are still looking for the guy responsible. this video shows you a better look right there at his face. here's surveillance video of the moment it was happening. investigators say the man took out a knife, demanded money from the driver, while he was still in the cab, and then the cab driver tried to fight him off but was stabbed several times. police said the man got out and ran off. cab driver was taken to the hospital. but he is expected to be okay.

this evening in north philadelphia, loved ones will hold a vigil for a 4-year-old girl killed by accidental gunfire last week. last night, the boyfriend of the child's mother surrendered to police in the case. the man turned himself in a week after the girl shot herself e. we're working to find out what charges he's facing. the child's mother is charged with murder. a teenage driver from reading and his uncle face charges after police pulled them over for going more than 100 miles an hour. police made the traffic stop tuesday night in riverdale, morris county. authorities said the 15-year-old was serving as his uncle's designated driver. police say the uncle admitted to smoking marijuana. he faces drug charges. the teenager is charged with speeding and driving without a license. now, your nbc 10 first alert neighborhood weather, with chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. >> things are changing very rapidly on the radar.

we're seeing less and less activity in pennsylvania. more in new jersey. still not a whole lot in the state of delaware. we do have the one severe thunderstorm warning in burlington county, new jersey. this is until 4:30. and that thunderstorm moving at about 20 miles an hour. you can see it here. and as we zoom in, it's covering -- or just past pemberton right now. that's some pretty heavy thunderstorm activity going right into chesterfield, new hanover, right in the path of that storm as well. we've got more down to the south. and this is kind of on the way to the shore, right down 55. very familiar road to a lot of people. down through millville. this is not going to be sitting in the same spot hour after hour, but it certainly does produce some pretty heavy rain. this one is actually moving more

slowly than any other. it's right near the mason-dixon line here. east notingham and new london, maybe sliding a little bit into maryland the way it is right now. this is a detection of hail in new jersey. and this darker blue indicating perhaps over one-inch diameter hail. and that itself is moving into a portion of, again, burlington county, where this warning is. chesterfield looks like it's just in the path of this hail. we've had several reports of hail during the last couple of hours. this is that one cell near east knottingham that we just showed you. that also has hail up to close to one inch in diameter. as we look at the future cast here, we're seeing less and less to the north and west. and not actually well organized showers and thunderstorms hitting the shore this evening.

and then perhaps just a last gasp in pennsylvania later on tonight. but i don't think it's going to be as heavy as what has come through during the past hour. so it continues to be a pretty active -- now, of course, the forecast very critical here. we do have a chance of a thunderstorm at penn's landing for the philadelphia orchestra concert. much of this activity has already passed the philadelphia area. or certainly will be in the next couple of hours. and then as we go through the future, we're looking beautiful for saturday and sunday. but there's a system coming in from the west. we've got clouds coming in late sunday, and sunday night. and this is just one computer model that does bring some rain into philadelphia for the fourth of july. other models keep it farther to the south. and as you can see, the heaviest of that rain is farther south. delaware and south jersey. so as we go to the parade on

monday, i'm predicting cloudy skies through the concert and the fireworks, but there is a chance of some rain. take a look at the forecast here for the holiday weekend. and you can see the weather does go downhill on monday. i'm keeping partly sunny skies in the lehigh valley. that will be the best weather. and also in the poconos. while we have clouds in philadelphia, just because we don't have raindrops there doesn't mean the chance of rain is zero. but the further south you are on monday, the greater chance of rain and probably the heaviest rain. and the earliest in the day that it starts. >> the models really differ on this. >> it's evolving a little bit faster, a little bit farther north than it was yesterday. so just a little bit more of a push to the north would bring that rain up into the philadelphia area. so obviously that's very critical. we'll keep watching the new data coming in hour by hour. >> are you worried about the

the sights and sounds of hail peppering a parking lot. >> in burlington county, storms moving across the region. some of them bringing hail. right there you see it. some of them are severe. >> the holiday weekend is off to a stormy start for some people. if you see any stormy weather, it depends where you live. >> chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz is back to break it down for us. and where these storms are right now. glenn? >> yeah, the storms continue to move, about three hours ago we had the back edge of it, by harrisburg. and now it's pretty close to the philadelphia area. so things are definitely trending toward the east, out of

pennsylvania and into new jersey and delaware. now, as we go in a little closer, we'll see some of these pretty heavy showers and thunderstorms. remember, this one was over east notingham. that was heavy, it was producing hail. you can see with the purple area there, that would still suggest hail, perhaps large hail of an inch in diameter. now we have a severe thunderstorm warning for this cell just issued for northwestern new castle county, northeastern cecil county in maryland, and southcentral chester county. just happened to be zooming right into this storm just as the warning gets issued. and we've seen it go just south of new london. and it's right along the border with virginia.

and -- or maryland. and continuing to track a little bit to the southeast. now, we've got some other storms that are pretty strong as well. this one just past philadelphia. and getting into northeast philly. over toward bensalem. again, with this heavy color here, academy road in northeast philly, and we're probably seeing some hail with that. we've had lots of reports of hail this afternoon. you can see, this is the cluster that goes from northeast philly, up into new jersey, right up the delaware river, right over bristol right now and headed in the general direction of trenton. we have other cells pretty close to the shore now. and this is right along the atlantic city expressway. so everybody moving down there, has gone through some pretty heavy rain. again, we have a chance of hail with this, headed right toward pleasantville. we'll keep you updated on the current radar and have the rest

and by the way, i want to tell you about this, folks. we tried to reach out to the company but couldn't find a working number on the website. so if the company is bankrupt, well, joan, you could be out of luck. with the summer travel season in full gear, we want to point out another scheme targeting your wallet. listen closely to this. is this the real deal? that's what the pennsylvania bureau of consumer protection calls this game. they warn to double-check every letter and digit when you go to a website. trying to book a bus or train ticket. they said they've gotten reports of websites offering great deals on public transportation. the problem is, the website is phony and you're paying an imposter. so you have to be very, very careful. learn how to protect yourself. always use an official website. that way you won't fall for this scheme. and you make sure that you do get the real deal. >> that's true with e-mails

when it comes to sunscreen, don't believe everything you read, even with updated label standards new tests involving 65 sunscreen brands show that about 40% don't meet their spf claims. "consumer reports" said you should use a higher spf number than you normally use to make sure you're meeting the minimum. you might have to scratch a holiday staple off your grocery shopping list. i'm obsessed with these lately. we're now dealing with an avocado shortage across the country because of a recent heat wave in california. it's wreaking havoc on the avocado crop. farmers say the high heat and winds are taking a big toll and say they're already worried about next year's supply. a little butter won't kill you. but it's not exactly a health food either, according to a new study. researchers took a look at the overall meals people were eating, not the ingredients that make up the food and found out that butter isn't good for you, but it's not bad.

part in programs throughout the year. a lot of fun out there. somehow this guy lived to tell the tale. >> this is scary. a skydiver survives the most dreaded of all mid-air problems, the parachute wouldn't open properly. it happened recently to daniel herndon of oklahoma. jumping out of a plane thousands of feet in the air, on his way to a soccer stadium below. seconds later, though, his chute came out tangled. his go pro camera shows what happened next. take a look. >> oh, boy. >> head, we're good, there. >> can you imagine? >> huh-uh. >> the frantic moments before he said it was good? he pulled his reserve chute as planned. he was even on time to deliver the game ball for a sock esh match. are you kidding me.

boy. now your nbc 10 first alert neighborhood weather, with chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. >> we continue to track thunderstorms across the area. a couple of hours ago, most of the action was in pennsylvania. now it has shifted into new jersey. and much of pennsylvania seeing a good bit of improvement with one exception, right down near the mason-dixon line. this is a severe thunderstorm warning for a part of chester county, and into new castle county in delaware, and newark are in that warning area. this is a cell that we've been tracking that has a good bit of hail with it. the severe thunderstorm warning goes until 5:15. this is the track of the hail. over the last hour or so, you can see these colors are getting brighter. the hail is getting bigger with this cell, getting up around two inches in diameter.

billiard ball size, according to the computer here. there it is, right along the mason-dixon line, right at appleton road, just about to get some heavy hail. that continues to move right along the southern border of chester county. this is a very strong storm, as you can see. and it's moving into the northwestern corner of delaware. okay? here's the delaware border, pike creek more in line with this. and even newark is in the vicinity, getting a little bit of lightning with it. newark's on the southern edge of this storm. and that is perhaps the strongest storm on the radar right now. we have some other fairly heavy showers. remember the one that was over the atlantic city expressway? that has moved eastward. and it's going north of atlantic city. more headed toward long beach

island over galloway township now, may's landing involved in that as well. the other showers and storms in pennsylvania were in bucks county and northeast philly. and over to bensalem. now it's shifted just east of bensalem now. here's the pennsylvania turnpike. and i-95. so it's in bristol, up toward levittown, and those storms, again, they're all capable of producing some pretty significant hail. now, as we go through the evening, once again, most of the action in new jersey. but there could be some remnant thunderstorms in and around the philadelphia area to 6:00, 7:00, maybe even 8:00. but after that we're starting to see improvement. that means as we go through the evening hours at penn's landing, that concert, may have a little bit of an issue at the beginning, but weather will be improving during that period of time.

now, here's the futurecast showing, we've got great weather on saturday. pretty nice weather on sunday. and then some of the computer models are bringing rain in, especially south of the city of philadelphia for monday. fourth of july. that includes part of the jersey shore being affected by that. but the parade up here in philadelphia, we're just on the northern edge. we just have a chance, a chance of seeing a little bit of rain with that later on during the day. and into the evening. as far as the rest of the weekend forecast, you can obviously see it's not as nice on monday as it is on sunday. and saturday is the most beautiful day of all. especially at the jersey shore, and in delaware. i just want to alert you about monday, because right now it's not looking so hot. >> and all those people on the parkway for wawa welcome america. still a little early to know
