everyone knows tonight there's a possibility of heavy downpours and isolated thunderstorms. >> that's all for "nbc 10 news today." have a great fourth of july. >> happy fourth. good morning. where did it come from? a teenager seriously injured after accidentally jumping on a firework in new york central park. a search to find who put it there and why. a suicide bomber carries out an attack at a u.s. consulate in saudi arabia. in baghdad, the death toll climbing from a truck bombing in a busy shopping district. isis claiming responsibility for that attack and a deadly siege on this crowded cafe. the father of that boy who was killed by an alligator at disney world reportedly told emergency crews he was also attacked by a second gator. this morning how the park is responding.

our top story, an investigation into a bizarre explosion in central park that seriously injured a young man from virginia. >> reporter: good morning. that young man is listed in stable condition this morning after what was a frightening incident in a city that's on heightened alert this holiday. >> we don't know. we don't know. >> reporter: chaos and confusion in new york central park. friends up in arms after another friend was badly injured. police say it was a small explosion off the beat and path. 19-year-old connor golden from virginia jumping down from a rock stepping on what police believe was a homemade firework. his left foot severed. his friends in apparent shock. >> we got to go. >> reporter: police say the three friends are not responsible for the firework but it's not clear how it got there and when. >> nothing to indicate this was

an explosive device that was placed or put in this area with a specific intent to harm any individual. >> reporter: golden's grandparents say what happened to their grandson is surreal. >> this is a life changing thing for this poor young man. >> reporter: bomb sniffing dogs noses to the ground searching for evidence. an unsettling sight to new yorkers and tourists alike. >> this is a very odd circumstance. >> reporter: nationwide, cities are stepping up security for the fourth of july holiday. in boston, police are monitoring dozens of surveillance cameras looking for any suspicious activity. in miami, the coast guard is keeping a close eye on the waters making sure boaters are safe at sea. and in los angeles, a noticeable increase in police officers and dogs at l.a.x. behind the scenes, tactical units aimed at preventing any potential attack.

the goal nationwide, a safe independence day with no unexpected fireworks. here in new york, millions are expected to gather around the city to watch the fireworks. there will be thousands of police officers watching, too. natalie and willie? >> thank you. drenching rain could threaten cookouts and fireworks displays for millions of americans. dylan is in for al and has the first check of the holiday forecast. what are we looking at? >> areas seeing rain the last couple days, like down through st. louis and kentucky, those areas will still deal with more rain. this is the setup we have. almost a stalled front right through the ohio and tennessee river valleys. humidity streaming in from south to storms and downpours that develop have a lot of water content. a lot of rain falls in a short period of time. that's why we have flash flood watches. they'll last through the day today through kentucky and

southern ohio and into west virginia. we do have pockets of heavier rain training over the same areas that we've been seeing them for the last couple of days and as this area of low pressure continues to move eastward, we'll see increased chances of heavier rain as far east as washington, d.c. down through virginia as well. that could affect the fireworks a little bit. as we go into tomorrow, spotty showers and storms. it looks like this area right through louisville, kentucky, stretching over into parts of eastern and central west virginia, we could end up with two to three inches of rain with isolated higher amounts. just to give you an idea of smattering of fireworks forecast. chicago is dry but mostly cloudy and 74. washington, d.c., that's where we could see a couple scattered storms. denver and atlanta looking okay with scattered storms and boston is looking okay. it's been wet and it will stay wet. >> keep the rain away from fireworks in new york? >> we may get a sprinkle.

>> the show goes on. a new terror attack in the middle east overnight. this one in saudi arabia following a string of bombings including one in baghdad for which isis is claiming responsibility. bill neely has the latest for us. bill, good morning. >> reporter: good morning and happy fourth of july to everyone but sadly terrible news from iraq and breaking news from saudi arabia where the u.s. mission in jetta has been targeted before. this morning a suicide bomber got to within 30 feet of the walls before blowing himself up. it's just the latest in a string of islamist attacks across half a dozen countries. controlled explosions outside the u.s. consulate in jeddah this morning after a suicide bomber was stopped in his car by two security men. he detonated his bomb but no one in the consulate was injured. the first bombing there in years aimed at americans. iraq was hit with its worst suicide attack this year.

the death toll now 165. this was a busy shopping area packed with people preparing to celebrate the holiday when a truck packed with explosives was driven into a building. dozens of children among the dead. iraq's prime minister visited the scene but was heckled and his car stoned. a week after his forces retook fallujah from isis, the terror group is lashing back and its reach is wide. bangladesh is the latest country to suffer an isis massacre. among 20 dead where three teenagers studying in america. one coffin draped in stars and stripes. one was a u.s. citizen from miami. she was studying at emory university. both were 18. they died with their friend.

an indian studying at berkeley. >> i was shocked and immediately started crying. i've been pretty numb. >> reporter: isis is blamed for last week's attack in turkey. more than 200 dead in less than a week. among them, nine italians and seven japanese killed in that attack in bangladesh. if you add the orlando, florida, massacre and one attack in france to that list, it's global and for most muslims, it's a total perversion of their holy month. >> touching so many different parts of the world. thank you. to the presidential race and busy holiday weekend for both candidates. hillary clinton has been interviewed by the fbi over her e-mails while donald trump sparked an uproar with a controversial new tweet. we have both campaigns covered. let's start with kelly

the image tweeted saturday from donald trump's account shows hillary clinton, a pile of money, and what appears to be the star of david. immediately denounced by some as anti-semitic. his campaign quickly changed the star to a circle but trump stayed silent and without a formal explanation, his former campaign manager defeating him. >> you can read into things that aren't there. >> reporter: the image originally appeared on twitter two weeks ago posted by a user that promoted other racist im e image imagery. >> i have many, many friends from israel and jewish friends. >> reporter: on sunday, trump's account praise ed praised elie

>> this is all up to donald trump. he'll pick who he wants. >> reporter: sources caution that trump's unpredictable style means you never know. there's always a chance he could pick somebody that would surprise all of us. willie, natalie? >> we wouldn't be surprised by that. kasie hunt, thanks so much. let's bring in mark halperin. busy weekend for both candidates. let's break it down with hillary clinton and the fbi interview. how do we think she did or how are they portraying how she did and will it change the narrative on the e-mail scandal? >> she had to had to eventually sit and do this interview. if she's not indicted, i think despite the controversy over her husband's meeting, this will not hurt her politically. still chatter about it. an indictment would be c catastrophic for her campaign. lawyers say it may have been bad judgment but not necessarily a crime. >> she admitted for the first

time that trust is a problem for her and polls bear that out. honest and trustworthy numbers are not good for her. does that concern her and is this fbi investigation a piece of that? >> there have been years and years of questions. some based on her own errors of judgment and behavior. some just based on the fact that clintons attract a lot of scrutiny. those remarks she made where she talked openly about this notion of trying to rebuild trust is about trying to build a governing structure than it is about winning the campaign. the biggest barrier to getting elected is people don't trust her as much as they do previous people elected president. >> as much as she's trying to regain their trust and turn the page on e-mail scandal and turn the corner campaigning with president obama and vice president biden joining her even though she's asked about bill clinton's tarmac meeting with attorney general loretta lynch.

how much damage was done by that? >> a lot of damage. it undermined the integrity of no indictment. in the end, if she is not indicted, we'll hear from people in the fbi to say more than normally when you have a no prosecution. in this case, we'll hear more to try to overcome people's suspicions based on that meeting which everyone now agrees was ill-advised. >> jumping to donald trump for a moment. we heard a list of vice presidential choices. mike pence, governor of pennsylvania, which kind of person does he need to counterbalance him? >> they need two fundamental things. one, someone who every person needs to pick. qualified to be president. they recognize if they pick someone that doesn't meet that bar, it will be a real negative for someone that's never govern

governed in his life. everyone i talked to said that person is ready to be president if they need to be and he needs something that's energizing for his campaign. someone like gingrich or christie. can they energy the campaign? probably not. >> if you're a betting man, your man would be on -- >> i never bet on things i cover. i will say this. i get a feeling that one or both of candidates may pick someone that's not been speculated about purposely keeping it hidden to create that shock surprise which is usually a hallmark of a good vp pick. >> happy fourth. >> thank you. history was made at ft. bragg, north carolina, last night. the atlanta braves and miami marlins playing at the first military installation.

back now at 7:30 on this july 4th monday morning 2016. we have a wonderful crowd outside kicking off their holiday weekend here with us in m midtown manhattan. a teenager from virginia in stable condition this morning after he stepped on what police described as a homemade firework in central park. they stress there's no evidence it was an act of terrorism. four national guard helicopters are now being used to fight wildfires in california. a massive new one broke out over the weekend forcing more than 5,000 people to evacuate. and several beaches in southern california closed today because of a toxic green algae

bloom. touching it can cause rashes, blisters and other health problems. new information coming to light in last month's horrific alligator attack at disney world. the father who tried to save his 2-year-old son reportedly told authorities that another gator attacked him during the incident. nbc's gabe gutierrez has more on that. >> reporter: a report by the orlando sentinel is shedding new light on that horrifying attack here at disney. painting a horrific picture of a father desperately trying to save his son and that a second gator may have been involved in the attack. chilling new details about that horrific attack at disney world. according to public records obtained by the orlando sentinel, the father of lane graves told authorities he was attacked by a second alligator while trying to save his son. in an e-mail to supervisors, a

captain said matt graves had lacerations from the gator's teeth despite needing stitches and antibiotics, the father refused to leave the area but was persuaded to seek medical attention. on the way to the hospital, the father described the experience telling how another gator attacked him as his son was being pulled into the water. >> reporter: during the 16-hour search for the boy, five alligators were trapped and killed. the 2 year old died from drowning and traumatic injuries. according to the report, the captain also told supervisors about the heartbreak for their child and writing this sweet couple insisted on showing us pictures of their happy son. adding that the mother kept referring to him as her happy

boy. the family which held a funeral for the child last month isn't commenting. the nebraska natives had been visiting disney world on june 14th staying at the grand floridian and their 2 year old was wading in water when the attack occurred. since then disney world has raised fencing around the lake and other lakefront properties posting signs that warn of alligators and snakes throughout their resorts. disney world officials did not respond to request for comment over the holiday weekend but in the most recent public statement they said disney was reinforcing training employees for alligator sightings and expanding communication to guest. >> your heart breaks just knowing all of this new information all of these details for the poor graves family. >> you hear them talk about their happy boy makes it even more painful. let's turn to ohio and a case of mistaken identity at a hotel that's now sparked an international incident. sheinelle jones is here with

that. >> police released body camera videos that show a businessman's arrest at gun point. they received a 911 call say a man dressed in traditional clothes was a terrorist pledging allegiance to isis. this body cam video shows officers carrying assault rifles rushing the hotel entrance as they approach a man in a robe and headdress. >> get on the ground! >> reporter: relatives of a hotel clerk called 911 to report that the clerk had panicked after seeing the man in the hotel lobby speaking on his phone in arabic and reportedly pledging his allegiance or something to isis. >> cover. cover. >> reporter: officers pin him to

the ground, handcuffing him. removing his shoes. he appeared to speak limited english trying to tell the officers he was a tourist. about ten minutes into the encounter, police finding no cause to make an arrest allowed the man to stand up. he then collapsed on the pavement. he was later taken to the hospital as a precaution. following the incident in a face to face meeting over the weekend at the cleveland office of the council on america and islamic relations, the police publicly apologized. >> it is a very regrettable circumstance that occurred for you. you should not have been put in that situation like you were. >> in response to the incident, a travel warning was issued to citizens telling them not to wear traditional clothes when

traveling abroad. they also summoned the senior american diplomat from the u.s. to discuss the matter. he apologized for the incident calling it unacceptable. >> thank you. >> let's get another check of the weather right now. dylan is in for al. >> a personal forecast for you, willie. and all of the people enjoying the macy's fireworks later today. we'll see clouds start to work in a little bit. there's a chance we might see a sprinkle but it's really about it. temperatures should be up around 78 degrees with light winds. something to keep in mind if you see the sprinkles, feel it, it's nothing to worry about. it's not going to get that much heavier. summertime heat down through southern texas and even into parts of louisiana. it's not just the high temperatures, it's the humidity and the humidity is going to be very high with your feels-like temperatures around 105 to 110 even in some areas. dallas, it will feel like 112. new orleans, it will feel like 103. across the southeast, tallahassee will feel like 98

degrees because of high humidity and temperatures will stay hot. little rock by thursday, 100 degrees. atlanta stays in the lower 90s. charleston, south carolina, stays in the upper 90s. even up into washington, d.c. by the time we get to thursday, temperatures will be in the mid 90s with higher humidity making it just a little bit uncomfortable. down through midland texas, we'll stay well above 100 degrees and dallas should be up around 100 through most of this week with even warmer feels like good morning. i'm meteorologist erika martin with an update on your -- >> that's your latest forecast.

april in a church where she was getting ready to teach an early morning class. a camera inside showed someone with an unusual walk. it's not clear male or female dressed in tactical gear carrying a hammer. missy suffered puncture wounds to the head and chest. they hoped surveillance video would lead to an arrest quickly but it's been 11 weeks now and they're still searching. documents released by police believe the suspect may have used the cell phone to record and/or video the victim and the murderous act and missy bee y b got a message on her linkedin account that was creepy and strange and investigators combed through the facebook accounts of missy and her husband, brandon. officials say nothing significant was found. police say the couple's marriage was in trouble. reports of infidelity. brandon bevers is cooperating.

>> it's the easiest conclusion to jump to. the husband did it. >> reporter: the couple's three daughters, 8, 13 and 15, are in counseling and doing okay. but difficult ages to be without a mom. how much does this haunt you day-to-day? >> every minute of the day. >> her work is saving lives and that someone took missy's has left her shattered. have you been able to make sense of it? >> nothing about it makes sense. whoever did this spent a lot of time in the building didn't take anything but they took a life. and then left. >> reporter: leaving a family heartbroken and still hoping for answers. >> that investigation continues. on a much different note, we'll swing over to "pop start."

good morning. happy fourth of july. i'm katy zachry. weather is on the minds of so many people today. let's get right to first alert meteorologist erika martin with a forecast that's really changing bit hour. >> yeah, it's really interesting pattern here. it's all due to a stubborn front that really won't budge just yet. i'd say another hour or so and then we'll see everything moving northward. hour by hour forecast, we'll start this at approximately 8:00. you can see the showers developing quickly. radar already picking up on some showers but not making it to the surface, not yet. as i get this going, i want you to see something really interesting. it looks like we could see an isolated thunderstorm for part of kent county. certainly some heavier downpours. get this going some more. the issue here really is all about that timing. when will those heavier

we're back at 8:08. your family probably looking forward to tonight's firework display. >> it's a different story for your family pet. >> that's right. they may be beautiful but the reality is when it comes to firework displays, your pets hear the noise and it's scary. fireworks rank up there with thunderstorms as the top causes for anxiety for dogs. they're a mainstay of every fourth of july celebration and enough to send your dog howling for the hills. in a recent survey, 44% of dog owners reported their dog had some aversion to loud noises and shelters say the fifth of july is the busiest day of the year because so many dogs run away from fireworks in fear.

traditionally go after they're born. there's a growing trend moms to be should know. many hospitals are doing away with traditional baby nurseries. it's known as baby friendly initiative and it may come to a hospital near you. the main objective is to encourage moms to breastfeed and ultimately bond more with their newborns by staying together in the same room around the clock. >> it's hard to breastfeed if your baby is not with you and if you're not available to hear the pre-feeding cues. >> there are 355 designated baby friendly hospitals in the u.s. and by the next year there will be an estimated 530 hospitals. that's about 1 in 4 births in america. massachusetts general hospital in boston is among them. >> the research is abundant and shows the benefits of keeping a mom and baby together in their room really creates an environment that's the healthiest for the baby and healthiest for the mothers. >> reporter: some parents love the idea.

good to see you. >> good to see you. >> congrats on the opening in knoxville. >> six days old. ready to celebrate the fourth. >> let's talk about our ingredients first. >> we'll do grilled chicken thighs with buffalo cauliflower. >> where do we start? >> we have warm water. i'll add in some salt. some fresh garlic that we smashed and we stir that up. we make this our brine. the salt will penetrate. we add chicken thighs in and let it sit for an hour and a half in the fridge. it can go overnight if you want. i've had some that's been sitting. >> can i do breasts if i like breasts better? >> you can do breasts. you can mow your lawn with

scissors, too. i wouldn't do that. >> i think that's a thigh. >> we have garlic. smoked paprika. cayenne, salt and pepper. thyme. make our rub here. stir that up while i mix this up. orange juice and mayonnaise. this provides fat for the marinade. mix in orange juice like this. we add in seasonings you're making there and add chicken thighs to that. that we marijuanate overnight. take them out like this and straight onto the grill like so. now, this is where the patience comes in. i like to take a brick and put it right on top of these thighs like this. >> tell me about the brick. what does it do for you? >> it keeps it even. you want the thing to stay even as possible.

now there's obviously variations in the muscle of the animal. put brick on there to hold it. as food cooks it wants to curl and shrink and it gets nice and even and then it takes patience. this is where we would say shut the grill and you have to have a lot of patience which most gentlemen don't. we want to play with the meat. you have to have patience. we wait until there's a nice char on it and take the brick off and we'll flip it over. i heard it over here. >> how are we doing over here? >> best chicken ever had in my life. >> nice and beautiful. now let me talk you through this. take cauliflower and smoke it first. if you have a smoker on the grill or put it on the top shelf and then we grill it to get nice char like we have here. buffalo sauce. check that out. >> they are starting to serve this in a lot of restaurants. it's so good.

philadelphia police are investigating a shooting at a family cookout that left a teenager dead. it happened just before midnight near south 31st street and grays ferry. police say someone started shooting from a car going by the home. a family having the holiday cookout ducked for cover. the 16-year-old boy who was shot was the only one injured. so far, no arrests have been made. >> you'll wand to keep the nbc10 app close by tomorrow morning if you plan to ride septa. dozens of train cars are being taken out of service because of safety concerns. septa inspectors discovered dangerous cracks on many of the cars. they could cause a train to derail. septa was forced to remove 120 of its new silver liner five train cars from the tracks. it could take all summer to fix the problem. in the meantime, septa says prepare for packed cars, disrupted service, or no service at all in some cases. i'm katy zachry. we'll have another update in about 25 minutes. thanks for joining us.
