this, the loss of 13 thousand railcar defektss and today we learn it's having ripple effects as far away as colorado. they set sit off. a big chunk of septa's regional rail trains delayed as commuters and the authority itself grapple with the sudden loss of nearly one third of the railcar fleet and few answers. >> i guess i'll start driving. i'm not waiting an hour for a train. it's crazy. it's too much that a lot of people working on trying to determine what happened, how it happened, what possible fixes can we make. >> septa general manager said this morning's frustrations of overcrowded cars and skipped stops may grow through the week as more people return to work especially for riders at stops closer to the city. today the regional rails only carry about 6% f o volume and

the authority is still scrambling to figure out why the beams are cracking near the welds. >> it couldthe workmen. it could be that it's not the right design to have it in that location. >> reporter: the railcars were assembled at this south korean company with local workers. in 2010 and 2011, the factory fell far behind on septa's orders, suffering heavy financial penalties for the delay. the silver lines are used in colorado. back here at home they're asking commuters to use other means of

transportation. they're trying to borrow cars but the impact is limited. >> we're hoping to add more. no one's sitting on a stockpile of cars and locomotives. >> reporter: new jersey transit told me today all of their railcars would work technically on septa's railways, it's not clear how many extra they have. we spent all day trying to speak with that manufacturer. hyundai wrote him about the assembly process and sourcing of the parts. they told us they're working closely with septa. live tonight at 30th street station, george spencer, nbc 10 news. >> for some septa riders, you can get a refund. you can get a credit, but you must mail your pass by thursday. so here's a look at some of the
