we have no room. you have to step off the train, please. >> right now at 11:00, day two of a septa slowdown, as more riders are discovering there's no space for them on regional rail trains. good morning. i'm vai sikahema. it happened all morning. regional rail riders waited for trains. those that stopped didn't have enough room. other trains just kept right on going. nbc 10's monique braxton is live for us this morning. what are passengers telling you? >> reporter: hey, vai, all is quiet here now, so hopefully all of those riders, they're at work, on the job up-to-the-. and the riders are telling us a mix of things. it is day two and this is when

septa executives predicted would be worse with more people returning to work after the holiday weekend. we came out to talk to passengers and see how the trains are moving. we found the later the morning, the longer the lines, with the regionals working on a modified saturday schedule, there are 120 fewer septa trains on the tracks. we saw conductors doing crowd control, making sure doors could close and assuring passengers more trains were coming. >> we have no room. you have to step off the train, please. you have to step off the train. there is no room. you cannot stand -- >> it's an unfortunate problem. and i just think you have to have patience. >> i parked here, thinking there would be an option of a number of trains, but three have passed since i've been here. >> septa tells us five lines had to be turned around. express trains today due to crowding on the trains. they bypassed the glenside and

jenkins town train station. septa was able to get trains back up to passengers at those stations for service. so hopefully all's well at this hour. we also found out that amtrak is able to pick up 260 passengers today at the trenton line, at cornwell height station. that's the first time that we've learned that amtrak is also trying to assist septa. we're going to be staying on top of the story today, and let you know the very latest. live for now from ardmore, monique braxton, nbc 10 news. >> septa is giving some riders a refund for the slowdown. you're eligible if you bought a weekly trail pass for the week starting july 4th. you can also get the refund if you bought a monthly regional trail pass that's valid for the month of july. you have to mail your pass back to septa by tomorrow in order to get your money back. you can find the address and more detailed instructions on nbc10.com and also the nbc 10 app. we've also posted a link to the modified regional rail schedule,

as well as some alternate routes. and time now to get more on mass transit and also the roads with nbc 10 first alert traffic reporter, pamela osborne. what are you seeing out there? >> there have been a lot of delays and alerts that have been popping up throughout the morning because of that modified decline that septa is running on right now. you can see norristown has a 20 or 30-minute delay. thorn dale, about 20 minutes so far. these are just some of the things we're seeing coming up, as monique mentioned there, some of those rails actually had to pass by the train or pass by those commuters, because they were simply too full. we're also keeping our eye on a vehicle accident. this is in abingdon. it's right by old york road and adams avenue. watch out for that if you're headed out the door. let's do a look at our drive times this morning. so far, everything's looking good. 95 is clear, 76, 476, all an easy commute. vai, back to you. >> pamela, thank you. >> announcer: now your nbc 10

first alert neighborhood weather. >> it is going to be a hot one today. an excessive heat warning is in effect as we enter this heat wave. here's a live look at citizens bank park, where the phillies will play the braves in a couple of hours. fans may need to take extra precautions to stay cool at this game. if you're headed to this game, drink plenty of water. the hot weather will stick around for a while. sheena parveen is here now with our forecast. good morning, sheena. >> good morning, vai. we have a heat wave in the forecast, starting with today. and because of the heat and the humidity, we have an excessive heat warning from new castle county in a delaware through the philadelphia area and surrounding neighborhoods in new jersey and pennsylvania, up towards trenton. this excessive heat warning will run until friday. so for the rest of the week, expect afternoon highs in the mid-90s and with the humidity, it's going to feel around 100 degrees. if you look at that seven-day forecast at the bottom of the screen, that will show you how many days you can expect temperatures in the 90s. look at the temperatures right now. it is almost 90 degrees in philadelphia. and it's only 11:00 a.m.,

although it's 90 in mt. holly, 88 in vineland, 87, dover. 88 in wilmington. even in atlantic city, the temperature's almost 90 degrees. we'll be in the mid-90s this afternoon. it's going to be really hot when you factor in the humidity, too. again, feeling close to 100 degrees. take a look at our temperature trend through the day. by about 4:00 p.m., in philadelphia, mid-90s. same thing through reading. mid- to low 90s. not along the shore, though. if you're along the shore in areas like stone harbor, you'll stay in about the mid-80s. no excessive heat warning there. but in wilmington, expect those mid-90s. it will be a hot one. stay hydrated. try to avoid several hours in the sun, in the middle of the day today, you definitely want to check on the elderly, and also never leave children and pets in the car. it's way too hot out. we'll take a look and see how long this will last, as well as our next chance of rain. that's coming up. >> all right. thank you, sheena. good advice. a 14-year-old girl is in critical condition after being shot in philadelphia's germantown neighborhood. this happened inside a home in

boyd street and east shelton avenue around 3:00 this morning. police say the girl was with friends and were playing with a gun when it went off. they know who did the shooting, but believe it was accidental. a 13-year-old boy is in stable condition after he was shot in the leg in philadelphia's hunting park neighborhood. the incident started when a woman drove down the street last night. neighbors yelled at her to slow down because kids were playing on the block. she left, but then police said she returned with a man who fired the into the crowd. they don't think the boy was the target. and new video to show you of a man breaking into a family dollar store in feltonville. this was around 3:30 in the morning on july 4th. police say he got into the store by breaking a hole in the wall from a back alley. he took money, food, and cigarettes. if you happen to recognize him, you're asked to call police. and in kensington, police are looking for this man. he was caught on video going into someone's car and stealing a pricey purse. this happened last month on grands back street.

he opened the door to the car and took a gucci purse that was inside. it had everything in it, the owner's money, social security, and driver's license. and more south jersey bureau officials in camden are asking for your help to track down the arsonist or arsonists that burned down more than a dozen homes. >> 911, what is your emergency? >> hello, there's a fire! a huge the fire! >> you just heard the frantic 911 call from one of four fires in camden on friday. since then, there have been a total of 14 fires, mostly in vacant home. seven firefighters have been hurt. officials tell neighbors to call police if they see anyone who's lingering and does not belong in that area. we're following a developing story this morning. president obama just announced that he will leave 8,400 u.s. troops in afghanistan when he leaves office. >> containing our forces at this specific level, based on our assessment of the security

pistorius was sentenced to six years in prison for the murder of his girlfriend. pistorius stood and faced a judge this morning as she announced the sentence. pistorius was facing a possible 15-year jail term for shooting reeva steenkamp at his home on valentine's day in 2013. the judge said compelling circumstances surrounding the shooting were enough to lessen the sentence. the spanish court has sentenced soccer star messi and his father to 21 months in prison for tax fraud, but because of how the legal system in spain works, any prison sentence under a two-year term for a first-time offender is automatically suspended, so the barcelona soccer player won't serve any jail time. the court also fined the two men. messi and his dad denied any wrongdoing in the case. and this morning, pope francis met with the parents of an american college student who was found dead in a river in rome. the pope expressed sympathy and compassion during the unscheduled private meeting with

the parents of beau solomon. the 19-year-old vanished less than a day after arriving in italy for a summer program. a homeless man is sbg held in solomon's death. . and a california man is facing kidnapping charges after being caught on a surveillance video, trying to kidnap a 6-year-old girl. here's the video. a woman walks into a cell phone store with her 6-year-old, just steps away, and suddenly, a man reaches into the store, just simply snatches the girl. the mother was holding another child, runs out of the store, screaming. the man didn't get far. the witnesses say the little girl fell, causing the would-be kidnapper to lose his grip. witnesses said the suspect had a strange reaction to being caught. >> he was smiling, like it was some kind of joke or something. >> even though he got caught, it just letsmen how dangerous this world can really be. >> investigators say the suspect may have been been under the influence of drugs. and a driver led police on a high-speed chase through rush hour traffic. this is in north carolina.

the silver mercedes zig zagged its way through busy roads in raleigh. it all started when police got a call agent a driver who appeared drunk. the chase spanned two counties and reached 110 miles per hour. troopers finally caught up with the car and were able to spin it out. a fire broke out in one of japan's geisha districts. the blaze started at a japanese-style bar in kyoto. it took firefighters four hours to put this fire out. two people were hurt. investigators suspect the blaze started in the bar's kitchen. and 128 people are dead and 42 others are missing after torrential rains fell over 11 provincial regions of china. chinese state television showing images of rescue efforts and urban areas inundated by deep water. it's been raining there since last thursday. 40,000 homes have collapsed.

well, to start off a heat wave that begins with today with temperatures in the 90s. we're going to be in the 90s today through saturday. so that's the main headline. we have a heat wave in the forecast. yesterday, we hit 89. so almost at 90, but technically, you need three days in a row of 90-degree plus temperatures. that's going to start today, mid-90s, tomorrow and friday, 97 degrees. the average high, that's 87 degrees. so we are going to stay hot and this will start off your weekend, too, feeling near 100 degrees when you factor in the humidity. we have an excessive heat warning. i'll show you which areas can expect that in just a second. take a look as we go from today through thursday, friday, and saturday. actual temperatures will be in the mid- to upper 90s. when you factor in the humidity, because it's going to stay very humid, it will feel close to 100 degrees today, around 100 tomorrow, and friday and even saturday, to start your weekend. we just have a stretch of very hot weather. now, today we're going to stay

dry with the hot weather. tomorrow, the thunderstorms do return in the afternoon, which for some of you will be good, because it will provide a little bit of relief with the hot temperatures. but not everyone will be seeing those thunderstorms. look at the temperatures right now. already at 89 in philadelphia. 88 in wilmington. 86, allentown. even at the atlantic city area, already near 90 degrees. don't forget, your seven-day is always at the bottom of the screen, so you'll be able to see how hot it will stay for the rest of the week. excessive heat warning from mercer county through philadelphia, wilmington, new castle county, and areas in between. that runs until friday, because we expect those temperatures to be hot until friday. in the 90s. feeling like around 100 degrees. so an excessive heat warning basically just tells you that this is potentially dangerous heat. you don't want to be outside for several hours in the middle of the day. you want to stay hydrated. and if you're going to the phillies' game today, make sure you drink plenty of water. never leave children and animals in cars, it is way too hot outside today for that.

up. everyday objects turned into art. that's the theme of an ongoing exhibit at the barnes foundation in philadelphia. and it's called sun splash. and it features works by artist nari ward. joining us now to tell us more is tom collins, executive director and president of the barnes foundation. tom, welcome. did i say that right? >> you did. >> when people go to museums, they're looking at works of people who are long dead, but this exhibit really showcases works by a guy who's very much alive and very prolific. tell us about nari and who he is and his background. >> nari ward was born in jamaica, 1953, relocated to the united states as a young man, was educated in schools in the northeast, and has been working since the early '90s in harlem in new york. >> tell us a little bit about some of his creations, what makes him so special. >> nari works almost exclusively with materials that he finds walking around neighborhood streets. principally in harlem, but other urban environments as well. he brings them together to craft

these kinds of poetic monumental objects that tell very rich stories about the history of the african diaspara and the black experience in the united states. >> this is what's referred to as found objects. things he just finds just walking the streets. >> that's right. >> so i'm guessing, what, spray paint, just whatever it is that he finds. >> it's remarkable. >> he finds a way to make it art. >> it's really remarkable, what he finds. and that's one of the reasons the work is so powerful. that he's finding incredible found objects on the side of the road, and bringing them together in ways that tell stories, in part because you have associations with these things, because they exist in your environment as well. >> we were just talking during the break about the barnes and what a treasure it is here in our city, but how does this work and how does it fit in with the barnes' permanent collection? >> sure. we're west known for our collections of post-impressionist and early modernist art. but we also have an

no place to sit. no place to sit or stand. the septa slowdown is now in day two, as commuters are dealing with trains packed to capacity. a lot of folks showed up to take the regional rail into work this morning. only to find out there was no room. some trains skipped stations altogether. nbc 10's monique braxton spoke to some passengers. she joins us live now in ardmore. monique, were people frustrated, angry, or just resigned that

this is their fate? >> reporter: a little bit of both, and even some were telling folks to pack their patience, vai. on social media, it's being called septapocalypse. wonder why, vai, right? joining us now, we've got a few folks out here. we've been alone most of the morning. we've seen additional cars also passing us by. and everyone is persevering through a second morning of hour-long waits on the platforms. frustrations are a dime a dozen. long waits and plenty of suggests. it's day two of the regionals working on a modified saturday schedule. one third to have the fleet is not on the rails. we saw conductors doing crowd control, making sure the doors could close, and ensuring passengers more trains were coming. >> why don't they provide buses that would bring us passengers to transportation center. that would help. that way we can take another means of transportation. but this is ridiculous. >> yeah, you have the alternative. you can take the subway if you

middle of the day, when temperatures are at their peak. right now we're near 90 for much of the area. 89, philadelphia. 88, south jersey, even along the shore, close to 90 degrees. and never forget your seven-days a to the bottom of the screen and that shows you even more 90-degree temperatures in the forecast. right now, our new jersey neighborhoods have already hit 90 degrees here. pitman, 91 degrees. washington township, 90. metford, 93 already. hopewell township, 90 degrees. and mercer county, and we will be in the mid-90s this afternoon, which is going to spark an excessive heat warning also because of the humidity. there mercer county through philadelphia down to new castle county in delaware, excessive heat warning through friday. it's not just today. today we won't see the rain, but tomorrow we have a better chance. maybe you'll get a little bit of heat relief with that. but from today until friday, we expect temperatures in the mid-90s. humidity is going to make it feel close to 100 degrees. this is why we're telling you, you want to stay hydrated and avoid those peak hours.

packages in someone's home. you see the guy pick up the package from the doorstep of a home in south philadelphia. if you watch closely, he seems to hand off a small package and picks up a bigger one for himself before walking off. now, if you happen to recognize him, police want to hear from you. same place, different case. police say this man pulled a gun on an employee at tell primeau food market on reid street in south philly. he demanded cash from the register. once he got it, he took off. you're asked to call police if you happen to know this guy. more than 500,000 hoverboards are being recalled after reports that dozens of them have burst into flames. this morning, the consumer product safety commission made the announcement. they receive 99 reports that the battery packs caught on fire or exploded, causing burns or property damage. the hoverboards were made by ten companies, including swagway and

well, if you've been in center city over the past few years, you've probably seen the new mormon temple rising above broad street. it's nearing completion and soon the public will be invited to take a look inside. joining us now to tell us more is senior church leader, elder mylan kunz. he's been a good friend. full disclosure here, i myself am a latter day saint. tell us the progress of the construction. >> the temple is complete, both inside and out. the meeting house next door is about two weeks away from completion. and the visitors coming to the open house would have the opportunity to go into both the meeting house and the temple itself. >> you mentioned that next month, people will have the chance to tour the temple. tell us a little bit more about that. what people should expect to see and what a unique, really once in a lifetime opportunity this is for them to go through an lds temple. >> it really is. most people have never seen the inside of an lds temple.

so from august 10th through september 9th, they'll have the opportunity to go on a free tour. now, i recommend very highly that they go to a website and reserve their tickets now. it's philadelphiamormontemple.org. and a temple tour will consist of a short video, where it will present the purpose of a temple, as well as the significance to church members. they will then walk across the street and tour all four levels of the temple, seeing all the significant rules and the beautiful workmanship there. and then they'll go to a reception area if they have any questions there. >> and even among latter day saints, they don't all get to go see the inside of a temple. this will be unique more people who are not of the lds faith. >> lds members will be able go to the temple once it's dedicated in september. >> and some new leaders have been appointed to oversee the temple. tell us about them. are they local or come from salt lake city? >> two are from delaware and

thunderstorms, but that is a heat wave. it starts with today and all we need for a heat wave is three days of 90-degree plus temperatures. going into the weekend, there you see those 90s on saturday. sunday will be drier and temperatures still around 90, but now we look into next week. the heat is going to continue. it looks like around 90 degrees, still. so that's not going anywhere anytime soon. we still have the excessive heat warning from today until friday. so basically, that just says this could be potentially dangerous heat, when you factor in the humidity. stay hydrated. you want to avoid several hours outside in this heat. check on the elderly. never leave children and pets in the car. that is a very bad idea. the temperature in a car shoots up incredibly quickly, when you have the doors and windows closed. and look at this heat across the board. you don't want to be doing that at all. we don't want to hear any of those stories happening. be safe out there, definitely stay hydrated, especially if you're going to the phillies' game today, it's going to be a hot one. >> we warn people every day, but still it happens, locking kids
