leaders, what did they say? >> reporter: they had a whole lot to say, jacqueline, about where they are with the repairs, the investigation. more importantly, the customers. and those we talked to today, the riders tell us they're already putting plans in motion for alternative arrangements. others say they're more comfortable with persevering through the summer. >> today i'm worried. >> i'm taking alternative routes. usually the bus. >> is it making your commute longer? >> much longer, yeah. >> how long? >> about twice as long. about two hours. >> reporter: worried and making alternative transportation arrangements. that's how septa's regional riders are handling day two of 120 fewer cars on the tracks. we took their concerns to ron hopkins, assistant general manager of operations on septa. engineers are working around the clock to determine how to repair

the cracks in the silver liner five trains, and what caused the defect discovered last friday. >> we probably have well over 50-plus engineers that are working with us. with internal engineers. >> reporter: during our one-on-one conversation, hopkins also says they're reviewing leasing contracts with agencies like new jersey transit and amtrak. >> the train sets are five cars, six, or eight cars long. so if we're able to get a full train set, that's our goal. >> i'm not sure which is the worst option at this point. standing on the train with everybody, which is kind of camaraderie, or driving alone in my car waiting on the road in traffic. >> reporter: back out here live now. you're looking at passengers who are checking the scheduling boards. half of the trains are on time the other half are late. we asked hopkins, how many parking spaces they've arranged

democrats continue. today officials cut the ribbon on the dnc pop-up merchandise shop at the comcast center. local artists designed all of that merchandise. you'll find apparel, buttons, drink, andwear. it gets under way in less than three weeks. it runs july 25th through the 28th. and you can count on complete coverage here on nbc 10. president obama said more troops will stay in afghanistan longer than planned. the president made that announcement this morning here at the white house. the new numbers reflect compromise between his original plan and what military commanders had recommended. the president originally planned to drop troop levels in afghanistan to 5,500 by the end of the year, but today he revealed he'll be keeping about 8,400 troops there when he leaves office. the president obama said the security situation in afghanistan remains precarious.

>> the decision i'm making today ensures my successor has a solid foundation for continued progress in afghanistan. as well as the flexibility to address the threat of terrorism as it evolves. >> the president also said afghan security forces are not as strong as they need to be. the videotaped shooting death of a black man by police in baton rouge, louisiana, is fueling anger and protests this afternoon. in the cell phone video, purported to show the killing, you see two officers wrestle a man to the ground outside a convenience store before police fire the deadly shots. the man killed has been identified as alton sterling. he had been selling cds outside the convenience store. police were called there tuesday after a caller said sterling threatened someone with a gun. authorities today confirmed sterling was armed. however, the naacp wants the police chief to be fired or resign. the two officers involved are on leave. and sterling's family is calling for justice.

>> as a mother, i have now been forced to raise a son who is going to remember what happened to his father. that i can't take away from him. >> there have been protests throughout baton rouge following the shooting. louisiana's governor said today the u.s. justice department will investigate. back here at home. new information now on a suspected revenge shooting, where a 13-year-old boy was caught in the cross fire in philadelphia. griffin's family gave us this picture of the child in the hospital as he recovers from multiple gunshot wounds. he was shot in his neighborhood just before midnight. nbc 10 learned this may have been a case of road rage. cydney long spoke with the police and the boy's mother today. cydney, what can you tell us? >> reporter: jim, i can tell you the shooting began on the corner

of darion with a war of words, a speeding driver who struck someone on this tight stretch of darion and victim's friends and family. >> i thank god my bone's still living and breathing. >> reporter: his mother is numb and angry. she said the speeding driver hit the brakes last night and emitted gunfire, sending her youngest of eight children to the hospital. >> he pulled the trigger. >> reporter: police say 13-year-old keion griffin was struck in the left leg. another bullet is still in his right arm. it happened after a female driver was yelled at for driving too fast. >> somebody called them the "b" word, and you know, she came back with somebody, and he just like recklessly just shot the whole block up. down through the block. and he was hit. >> reporter: the driver and shooter drove off. police have canvassed the

neighborhood and so did we looking for surveillance video of the shots fired. >> he had his whole summer, you know, just planned, just fun. >> reporter: relatives said keion loves to dance. >> he can't even enjoy it. he's probably going to be in a wheelchair. >> reporter: griffin wants the driver and shooter caught and punished. >> if i catch her before the law does, i will bite her head off like i'm a pit bull. >> reporter: we'll continue to check with police. so far, they've not secured any surveillance images from this neighborhood. we're told the car was a newer model white sedan, possibly a honda, or a chrysler. in the meantime, keion does remain hospitalized. doctors are telling them the swelling in his arm have to go down before they can decide if they will remove that bullet. live in honey park, cydney long, nbc 10 news. another child was injured in a separate shooting a few hours later in philadelphia. the 14-year-old girl was shot

inside a home here on boyd street early this morning. a group of kids was playing with a gun when it went off. the girl's in critical condition, but is expected to survive. it's not clear yet if any charges will be filed. a former delaware county teacher could spend nearly two years in prison for sexually assaulting a girl on his team. gregory was sentenced from 7 to # 2 months in prison. he had a relationship with a former student he coached on his track team. she was 18 at the time. he was a physics teacher and track and field coach. he grew close to the alleged victim by helping her through a break-up with her boyfriend. new information now about a house fire that killed two children in wilmington back in january. today investigators revealed a space heater is to blame for the fire on north monroe street. they said something flammable

got too close to the heater and ignited. the flames quickly spread throughout the house. a 3-year-old and a 3-year-old both died of smoke inhalation and burns. we have an nbc 10 traffic alert for anyone who plans to use the betsy ross bridge overnight. penn dot work will close the bridge westbound for 15-minute intervals beginning at 10:30 tonight. it will last until 5:00 in the morning. the same thing for thursday and friday as well. there's good news and bad news on the mega millions front this afternoon. you want the bad news first? >> yeah. >> it is that you didn't win, we didn't win last night's giant jackpot. >> the good news is we have more than half a billion reasons to play friday. still time. people purchased tickets for friday night's drawing. the jackpot stands at $508 million. it is the seventh largest lottery prize in u.s. history. rolled over again, after no one hit the jackpot last night.

control will cut down on the pest side use. a new health care center. the va clinic had its grand opening today in marlton. it's located on lincoln drive east. more than 35,000 veterans live in the county. right now in washington, lawmakers are trying to hash out new legislation aimed at tackling america's deadly opioid and heroin epidemic. congressional committees are finalizing funding that will go toward addiction treatments and research. the white house is asking congress for more than $1 billion in emergency funding to fight opioid and heroin addiction. bensalem police director fred haren was among dozens of law enforcement invited to sit in on the debate. >> there's no way to arrest our way out of this. stopping the flow of narcotics in the country, but the user on the street, they need to get off

neighborhood weather, with chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. >> the heat has built up pretty quickly. the humidity is already high. and getting higher. so you have an excessive heat warning until friday at 6:00 p.m. for all the urbanized areas, from northern delaware all the way up to trenton. it does not include lehigh valley, it does not include the jersey shore. 95 degrees in philadelphia. 91 in lehigh valley. not a whole lot of relief around here. there's one or two showers in sussex county, delaware, and that's about it. we have more significant activity way back to the west. it's going to take a while before we get any cooling thunderstorms out of this. but the heat wave, yeah, and the humidity on top of that, that's what's making it feel really bad. 94 degrees, feeling like 98. it's going to get worse. it's going to get hotter

tomorrow and friday, up near 97, with the higher humidity feeling hike about 104. by saturday, 95, feeling like close to 100 degrees. about the only way we cool off is with thunderstorms. we expect some to start developing tomorrow afternoon. kind of scattered around. not everybody getting it. lower chances in southern delaware, and at the jersey shore. by 10:00 tomorrow night, things are quieting down again. then the heat of the day on friday. along with the high humidity helps to trigger some afternoon activity. and maybe even into friday evening with this system coming in from the west. by then, a lot of you are going to hope for some rain. because it is just going to be mighty hot. so we have the first alert out for much of the philadelphia area. look at these temperatures. 97 at fairmount.

a 6-year-old girl is safe this afternoon after she was kidnapped from a cell phone store in california and the whole thing was caught on surveillance video. you can see as the girl and her mother walked into the store right here, and she wanders away from her mom there on the left side of your screen. mom's on the right. watch the door near the girl. the kidnapper reached in, pulled her outside. we're going to show it again to you in slow motion. the little girl fell outside the store and the kidnapper lost his grip on her. police later arrested him.

now, a story of a very honest cab driver and equally lucky passenger. >> the cabby's name is buzzy. he picked the passenger up saturday on the streets of boston. after the guy got out of the cab, buzzy noticed a bag in the back seat. in that bag, $187,000 cash. that cab driver had a decision to make. >> three things came in my mind. i thought, shall i go back and look for him, because he might be looking for me. or you can take this money home. it will change my life. or should i take it to the police station. >> buzzy the cab driver took the cash to the police station making the right choice. turned out the money belonged to a homeless man who had just inherited it. he gave that cab driver who found the money a $100 bill. as a reward for returning that cash. >> does that sound right to you? >> from $187,000 --

trenton. so it does not cover the shore or southern delaware or the lehigh valley. it's going to be hot in those places, but not quite as hot. pennsylvania suburbs in philadelphia, parts of new jersey, parts of delaware, and this is for thursday and friday as our first alert, due to the extreme heat and humidity, making it feel like it's over a hundred degrees. we also have poor air quality. we've got ozone issues as well. 93 in philadelphia. 91 just north and west. 92 in parts of south jersey. we don't really have any cool weather. it's even pretty hot at the jersey shore, and the delaware beaches today. the neighborhoods around philadelphia, we have the 93 at the airport. but it's 94 at parkside. 96 in society hill and penn's port. 95 in bustleton. it's even hotter in other parts of philadelphia than it is officially at the airport.

on friday, from northern delaware, through the philadelphia region and all the way up through trenton. we have a first alert out for most of those places. the p.a. suburbs of philadelphia, and our area, much of new jersey, and parts of delaware. this is for thursday and friday. it's going to get hotter and more humid than what we've seen today. feeling like a hundred or higher, plus poor air quality. right now we have 93 in philadelphia. 92 south jersey. 91 lehigh valley and the suburbs. at the jersey shore, we finally have a bit of a sea breeze. we had a west wind for a while. so we were well up into the 80s in atlantic city. now it's down to 82. the ocean 64. let's see how the delaware beaches are doing by comparison. we have temperatures in the 70s there with a bit of an onshore wind, sea breeze.

90 degrees in lewis. 92 in redden. once again, go a little inland and you have way hotter weather. we've got a heat wave that today is almost assuredly day one of. about 94 for the high. feeling like about 98. with the temperature up, and the humidity up, the next two days, feels closer to 104. and by saturday, the 95, we'll start to see lower humidity coming in. at least during saturday afternoon. so this is a limited heat wave. we'll get some relief, especially by saturday night and sunday. we've got the first alert symbols up there. chestnut hill at 95. yardley 93. we do not have the first alert for easton or allentown up in the lehigh valley. could get a cooling thunderstorm there in the afternoon. also not quite as hot or humid as some of the rest of the area. jersey shore also not in the

first alert. that's why we do the neighborhood forecast. some places are going to be having the dangerous heat and humidity and others won't. in wilmington, 94 degrees. it's going to be hot. even in rehoboth beach, it's going to be hot. we have isolated showers down in southern delaware. a lot more back to the west. and that is going to be moving in as we head into tomorrow. we have some thunderstorms developing with the heat of the day. we've got some more coming as we go into friday. and then we start drying out. so there's tomorrow and friday. 97 with just some isolated afternoon thunderstorms. saturday's hot, but the humidity starts going down. that sets us up for real nice weather sunday and monday. and into tuesday before the heat starts to build later next week. well, a family's decades-long tradition may have come to an end thanks to the

who stole the military issued flag like this in memory of his brother likely didn't realize its irreplaceable value. >> it's the last item that we really have of patrick's memory. we don't have a body, we don't have a tombstone. we don't have anything. that's it. >> reporter: the family received the stars and stripes after navy seaman patrick corcoran was killed in the vietnam war in 1969. >> this is where the flag flies on the holiday. >> reporter: the last decade it's flown once a year outside their next door neighbor's house on east 11th avenue in north wildwood on a pole strong enough to support a large 10-foot-long flag. this is a smaller one. but on july 4th morning, that neighbor, tom shaffer, himself an army veteran, discovered it was gone. >> my wife cried her eyes out. we had to tell them. it was brutal. >> reporter: usually the flag is raised on memorial day, but because of rain this year, the corcorans waited to fly it until
