the deadliest attack on u.s. law enforcement since 9/11, "today," friday, july 8th, 2016. >> announcer: from nbc news, this is special edition of "today." tragedy in dallas with matt lauer and savannah guthrie live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. good morning, everybody. welcome to "today." it's friday morning. we've got willie here in for matt. once again we are waking up to a shock. 11 officers shot in dallas. five of them have been killed. let's get to this breaking news. here's what we know. it all started before 9:00 local time in dallas. a march protesting this week's officer-involved shootings in louisiana and minnesota had just wrapped up when gunmen opened fire in what's being described now as a coordinated ambush style attack. >> five officers were killed. four from the dallas police department. the fifth was a dallas area

rapid transit officer. at least six other officers were wounded along with one civilian. >> president obama is at a nato summit in poland and said he was horrified by the attack and called it vicious, calculate and despicable. we have complete coverage this morning. let's start with nbc's gabe gutierrez at the scene for us. gabe, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. a protest against police violence and then violence erupted. as you mentioned, 11 officers shot this morning. five are dead and much of downtown dallas is still on lockdown. within the past few minutes, we just learned that authorities finished sweeping the area for explosives and found none. after this week's police shooting deaths of black men in louisiana and minnesota, what kban began as a peaceful protest in downtown dallas turned suddenly into chaos. just before 9:00 p.m., terrified

demonstrators running for cover. others stopping to help the injured. cell phone video capturing the barrage of gunfire. >> shots fired. officer down. >> reporter: police ducking behind squad cars and buildings. one officer ditching his motorcycle taking cover. >> he just started shooting. all of the cops are getting shot. it had to been five or six cops. they were all getting shot down. >> reporter: authorities calling it an ambush. >> we heard the shots. i saw one of the officers land down on his stomach and he was not responsive. they rolled him over. >> reporter: at least two snipers in elevated positions opening fire during the rally on officers who were not wearing riot gear. >> these suspects were positioning themselves in a way to triangulate on these officers from two different perches in garages in the downtown area and

planned to injure and kill as many law enforcement officers as they could. >> reporter: overnight, shocked confusion. dallas coming to grips with a rapidly unfolding national tragedy. >> people saw a baby stroller left in the middle of the street and people walked over to the baby stroller and picked it up. i guess the parent was in shock. >> reporter: the frantic search for answers as a tense standoff was under way. a suspect cornered in a parking garage exchanging gunfire with police. by 1:00 a.m., authorities say another suspect, a woman, was taken into custody near the garage. two people seen leaving the area in a mercedes were also stopped and being questioned. then horrifying threats from the gunman inside the garage. >> told our negotiators that the end is coming. and he's going to hurt and kill more of us, meaning law enforcement, and that there are bombs all over the place in this garage and in downtown. >> reporter: within minutes, bystanders heard a blast.

by 2:25 local time, that suspect was dead. police swept the area for possible explosive devices and found none. a massive investigation now under way after the deadliest attack on u.s. law enforcement since 9/11. at this point it is unclear what relationship, if any, the suspects had with the actual demonstration. this all happened not far from daley plaza and more than half a century after the kennedy assassination, this city is grieving after another national tragedy. at least five officers murdered in the line of duty. willie, savannah? >> unthinkable. gabe gutierrez, thank you. >> it bears repeating, this is the deadliest attack on police since september 11. jacob rascon joins us with more on what we know about the victims. >> reporter: you can see it on officers faces standing here. they've been dealing with the tragedy of the loss of their

beloved colleagues and friends and among the crowd behind me pr, you have some who showed up to protest with anger toward their officers and now are praying for those officers. officials with d.a.r.t., the dallas area rapid transit confirming the death of brent thompson. the 43-year-old officer the first killed in the line of duty since d.a.r.t. formed a police department in 1989. he joined the force in 2009. d.a.r.t. posting this on its website. as you can imagine, our hearts are broken. this is something that touches every part of our organization. three other d.a.r.t. police officers were also shot in the attack. the other officers shot and killed worked for the dallas police department. authorities say about 800 people were at the demonstration. a reaction to the police shootings of alton sterling in baton rouge, tuesday, and philando castile in minnesota on

wednesday. over 100 officers were assigned to the dallas event. the department tragenot wearing gear. >> seeing the courage and professionalism and just the grit to stay on scene in an area looking for suspects knowing that we are vulnerable. i can tell you, i have never been more proud of a police officer and being part of this great noble profession. >> reporter: and no doubt we expect to learn more about the condition of those six officers who are wounded but so far survived their injuries later at a press conference in a half hour. we're told the d.a.r.t. officers who have been injured are expected to survive. willie, savannah? >> jacob rascon, thank you. >> we're joined by dallas mayor mike rawlings. mr. mayor, good morning to you. >> good morning, savannah.

>> we just want to send our condolences to you and your community and the community of law enforcement. our hearts are with you on a very difficult day. >> thank you. it is painful morning. i was with families last night. officers last night. this is a terrible blow to the city of dallas. a terrible blow to the united states of america. and it calls for us to come together at this time and hopefully love one another deeply. >> there are so many questions this morning. as we understand it, the police have three suspects in custody and one suspect was killed in a shootout with police. have you learned anymore about who these suspects are, what their motivations or affiliations might be? >> we're undergoing an intense investigation as you can imagine bringing in everybody looking at

all of the backgrounds and we don't have any information at this time. we're glad that we took down one of the suspects and we are hopeful that we have got everybody, but we don't know that for sure. >> are suspects in custody cooperating with police? are they talking to your investigators? >> they're not at this point. they're subjects that we're just interviewing. they're being pretty tight lipped at this point. >> mr. mayor, it's willie geist. we appreciate you taking time with us this morning. have they given any indication or little information they have provided of what their motive may have been in that shooting last night? >> it's simple. they wanted to kill police officers. and sadly they did. that teaches us that these police officers stand between us

and every day tragedy. these men that put their lives on the line last night and lost them, and we've got to get to the bottom of it. more importantly, we have to lift up the families right now and lift up every officer in the united states of america. this is what happens day in and day out. >> mr. mayor, you mentioned at your earlier press briefing this was a coordinated triangulated attack was the word you used with multiple shooters that had experience with long guns. have you learned anymore about how they planned or carried out this attack? >> we've got some reports out there but they have not been confirmed. at our morning press conference, hopefully we'll confirm those and be able to give you more information. at this time we don't. >> before we let you go, mayor, i know it's a busy day. there are six wounded officers. a wounded civilian. do you know anything about the severity of their wounds and their conditions this morning?

>> i want to make sure we get the numbers right because 12 officers were shot. eight were dallas police officers. five are dead. five were transit officers. two civilians. one male and one female. no one died there. so those are the numbers that i got when i walked in to my office just a moment ago. >> thank you for that updated information. obviously we'll pass that along. mayor rawlings, again, our condolences and appreciation for your time, sir, this morning. >> thank you, sir. >> we feel the prayers. thank you. the victims include members as we mention of both the police department in dallas and the dallas area rapid transit authority. gary thomas is d.a.r.t.'s president and exucutive.

do you have an update for us on the condition of those wounded officers? we have one officer was preparing to go into surgery. another one was being evaluated for surgery. and one was released to go home. >> are they all expected to survive, chief? >> yes. those three are expected to survive. there is nothing life threatening at that time but they'll have to undergo surgery. >> mr. thomas, what was the role of the d.a.r.t. officers at that event last night? a protest obviously of the officer-involved shootings in two other places. what was the role of your officers there last night?

>> we actually run the transit system and we have train lines that go through downtown and there's a station, a rail station, that was very close to where the protest was going on, the event was going on. our officers were there to make sure that our patrons and customers riding trains and buses were able to get on and off the trains and on and off the buss in a safe and efficient manner. the travel on trains and buses wasn't impacted by the incident happening nearby. >> chief spiller, any indication to you or dallas police that there was anything suspicious anticipated at this event? any reason to believe there would be heightened concern? >> we did not have any reason to believe that we were going to have something to occur of this nature. i must say even though we didn't have any information, the

training of our officers and dallas police officers was very appropriate for the circumstances and the events that occurred. officers wanted to immediately make sure that the protesters were safe and then get to those officers that were wounded and then trying to engage those suspects. subsequently, i think that reduced the number of injuries because of the quick response and quick actions of not only our officers but dallas police department officers, we saw less injuries to protesters as well as to officers because of their quick thinking and quick response. >> we know you have a busy morning. we'll let you get back to work. we want to ask you in closing, tell us about officer brent thompson, brent thompson the man. >> well, brent was a great officer. he served as a patrol officer which is what he was doing

tonight. he also performed as a rail officer and i would like to point out, brent was recently married in the last two weeks. so this is very heartbreaking for us. not only for that reason but because we lost a member in blue and we have received sympathies and calls and e-mails from across the country from police departments and citizens throughout the u.s. and canada and england as well as here in the north texas region. brent was a great officer and we will definitely miss him. we make sure that his family is taken care of and that's where our attention is focused now toward the injured officers, brent's family and with the dallas police department making sure we're there for them with the investigation and the care and well-being of their officers also. >> married just within the last

two weeks. officer brett thompson. thank you to taking a break this morning. we're glad to hear other officers wounded in the attack will in fact survive. thank you for your time this morning. >> thank you very much. the president is traveling overseas. he was quick to denounce this attack. he addressed the shootings from a site of a major nato summit in poland. ron, good morning. what did the president have to say? >> reporter: the events in dallas rose to the top of the president's agenda here. president obama upset by the killing and wounding of so many police officers. >> i believe i speak for every single american when i say that we're horrified over these events and stand united with the people and police department in dallas. >> reporter: president obama saying he offered his condolences to the citizens of

dallas and the police force. he has reached one conclusion. >> there is no justification for these attacks or any violence against law enforcement. >> reporter: mr. obama attending his final summit pushed aside by the horror back home. arriving in warsaw, the president condemning the killing of two people. >> i get letters, well meaning letters sometimes, from law enforcement saying how come we're under attack? how come not as much emphasis is made when police officers are shot? and so to all of law enforcement, i want to be very clear. we know you have a tough job. >> reporter: today the president calling for the nation to focus on dallas.

>> ask all americans to say a prayer for these officers and their families. keep them in your thoughts and as a nation, let's remember to express our profound gratitude to our men and women in blue not just today but every day. >> reporter: as he has after previous mass shootings, the president said the nation must confront the reality of how easy it is for someone to get their hands on very powerful weapons. >> ron allen traveling with the president in warsaw. thank you. the protest in dallas were among many held across the country in reaction to this week's deadly police shootings. the latest in minnesota streamed online by the victim's girlfriend. >> reporter: protesters in minnesota say they're saddened by what happened in dallas. one person telling us two wrongs don't make a right. state investigators say they collected several videos of evidence including squad car

video as the community here remembers the man who died. with philando castile's family leading the way, a massive crowd marched through st. paul. some broke away to block streets and rail lines. all of it following an emotional gathering outside of j.j. hill montessori skill where castile worked known as mr. phil. >> he's always been the kind of guy who you can trust. >> big loss. >> reporter: castile was shot by a police officer wednesday night during a traffic stop. >> he killed my boyfriend. >> reporter: the aftermath streamed on facebook by his girlfriend. her 4-year-old daughter was in the back seat. >> you shot four bullets into him. he was just getting his license and registration, sir. >> reporter: it's unclear in what happened in the moments

before the shooting. reynolds said they were broken over for a broken taillight and one officer asked for identification. >> he began to tell the officer, i have a concealed weapon. and he began to shoot. >> reporter: state investigators now identified both officers. the union representing st. anthony's police force says it's critically important to remember despite the graphic nature of the video, that there's a great deal we don't know about what happened in this incident and why. this morning both officers are on paid administrative leave. the medical examiner confirms that castile did die of multiple gunshot wounds. local and state leaders are calling for an expedited investigation saying they don't want to wait months for answers. >> joe fryer in st. paul, minnesota, this morning. >> we continue to follow this unfolding story in dallas. we're going to have more just

we're back. 7:30. it's a friday morning. 8th of july. we have some harrowing images out of dallas, texas, this morning. a tragic story. snipers ambushing police officers near the end of a peaceful demonstration. at least five officers were killed. >> at least three suspects in custody this morning. a fourth is dead after an hours long standoff and shootout with police. let's go back to nbc's jacob rascon in dallas jacob, good morning. >> reporter: 11 officers shot. five killed. we are waiting on updates on conditions of the other six officers. we know that three of them are suspected to survive. we're not sure about the other three. >> at 8:58, our worst nightmare

happened. >> reporter: the nightmare in downtown dallas. an active shooter. >> market and lamar. assist officers. shots fired. officers down. >> reporter: dallas police now on high alert racing toward the gunfire. >> all s.w.a.t. officers on channel 2. saying the suspect has a rifle. >> reporter: rapid gunfire. because i'm a gun owner, i knew it was an assault rifle. >> reporter: police can't find a suspect. officers are being gunned down. >> all of the cops are getting shot. cops bending over. it had to be five or six cops. they were all getting shot down. >> my car's shot. i'm en route to baylor hospital. let them know i'm coming. >> reporter: the news is bad. >> we found out ten have been shot. three passed away. several in surgery. >> an 11 officers has been shot.

>> reporter: law enforcement is learning it's not one suspect but potentially several snipers picking off police. >> working together with rifles triangulated at elevated positions in different points in the downtown area. >> reporter: three people are in police custody. one is a woman. two caught leaving the scene and police are negotiating with a fourth who is still shooting and a chilling new threat. >> the suspect that we are negotiating with has told our negotiators that he's going to hurt and kill more of us and that there are bombs all over the place. >> reporter: five hours after the first shots are fired, police say the suspect they have been negotiating with is neutralized. no bombs are found. and more heartbreaking news from the dallas pd. we are sad to report a fifth officer has died. a night of terror, bravery, confusion, agonizing sadness, a night simply unimaginable.

of course the investigation is just getting started and what a massive investigation. the dallas mayor says, of course, they reached out to the fbi and atf and of course as you heard there in this spot they have found no explosive devices. they are just now starting to pick up the hundreds of pieces, if not thousands of evidence. >> long investigation ahead. jacob, thank you. >> given the timing of the attack at the end of this large demonstration, thousands of people were caught right in the middle of the chaos. good morning to both of you. >> good morning. >> good morning. >> it's good to see you and know that you're okay. i wonder given everything you've witnessed how you're feeling this morning and how you're doing? >> tired. >> we're doing good. we're glad to be safe. a little bit tired. no worse for the wear. >> can you tell us what you saw and what you experienced last

night? >> let's see. i experienced a lot of fear. a lot of terror. a lot of frustration. a lot of anger. and just all of the emotions. very emotional night. nothing that i anticipated. >> not in the least bit. it wasn't exactly how i thought the night was going to end. we're safe. that in itself is a blessing. >> you arrived at the protest. you say they were breaking up peacefully. police officers telling people to disperse and go home and then what did you see and hear at that point? >> after the organizers told everyone the night was done, everyone was heading east on commerce. within two minutes or so, i heard a shot. i didn't know it was a gun until i saw everyone rushing toward me. what's going on? i ran back as well. we all huddled up together and

everything settled for a minute and we walked forward again and more people were running back and realized that there is a shooter. we had to figure out what's going on. my wife wasn't with me at the time and when we realized they were shooting we contacted each other and she was near where one of the shooters where and rushed to go get her. >> you were separated from your husband at that point near one of the shooters. could you see the shooter? any description of them? >> i could not see the shooter. i was ahead of him. we were separated at the end of the rally and was headed on commerce toward our car and i heard the first shot but like him i didn't realize it was a shot. and the crowd was screaming and pandemonium. i saw the police car run past. all i did was get a calm spot so i could figure out what was going on and my first thought

morning? i have to say you think about something getting out of control at a protest, you don't think about snipers triangulating in elevated positions attacking law enforcement. what do you make of those facts? >> that's right, savannah. this is cold, calculated murder. these people were trained. it appears they had this planned out. whether they were looking for the right opportunity and peaceful protests in dallas presented that opportunity. this appears to me to have been planned for some period of time. i'm sure we'll find out they were communicating as this event unfolded and talking to each other whether by radio or cell phone. this is in my opinion everything that i've seen, these are trained people that have been planning something like this for a period of time. it's absolutely devastating for the law enforcement community and our citizens of this country, savannah. >> eyewitnesses said they saw one of the men, at least one of the men in tactical gear. this goes to sean's point this was obviously something that was well planned out and well

thought out. what do you think exactly went into this? how much planning? how long would it take to arrange this? >> watching this last night break, it was like watching a firefight in the middle east. not something you would see on america's streets. what bothers so many people on both sides whether black lives matter, white lives matter, we all matter because that's red blood on the street. for the police, many police of the 1 million today in america, they feel like they have targets on their back when they hear phrases in these marches like we want dead cops and fry them like bacon and we see gucops gunned down like this. for a fraction of percentage of cops that do their job bad like we saw in the last couple days who react too quickly and who shoot to hold the entire law enforcement community responsible in our country we've got to find a balance there and

right now men and women in blue feel like that target is getting bigger on their backs. >> let me ask you about what we know about these suspects, which is very little. we had the dallas mayor on earlier that said the suspects who were in custody aren't talking and they're being very tight lipped and then the suspect who was cornered in a garage who ultimately was killed in the firefight with police had said things like the end is coming. you are talking about pretty defiant, hardened suspects. what do you make of that? >> we certainly don't know the motivation. hopefully that will come out in this investigation that will go on here in the next few weeks. but it appears that it's potentially connected to the incidents that we saw the last couple days with law enforcement officers involved in these shootings and this type of demonstration. when they talk about the end is near, again, sounds to me as if these are people who are committed. they talked about this before. this group of four. they planned something out to

launch some type of attack and looking for the appropriate time, the appropriate opportunity. statements like that demonstrate a clear defiance for law enforcement and a need to make a strong statement. >> it feels like we wake up every morning to a new normal. is this now a new normal for police officers at large public gatherings, protests, otherwise, even parades they have to sweep for snipers on the top of buildings? >> you know, there's a term that police officers use that's called professional pair y para where you sweep behind you and above you because you fear this could come home. realities come home. as a hostage negotiator, we had a barricaded suspect last night but they may have been connected with isis because they weren't trying to talk their way out. all they wanted to do it appears was at least in one case come to the scene, kill as many cops as they can and die. this is part of a new normal for

dallas. police ambushed by snipers. several suspects in custody. another dead. the search for a motive under way. nbc's gabe gutierrez is in dallas for us. gabe, good morning, again. >> reporter: willie, good morning. the mayor's office just confirmed that 12 officers have been shot and two civilians have been shot. much of downtown dallas is still locked down and we just learned that police finished sweeping the area for explosives and found none. it was a protest against police violence when violence erupted. >> go! go! >> reporter: terrified demonstrators running for cover. cell phone video capturing the barrage of gunfire. >> shots fired. officers down. it's an assist officer. >> reporter:ter: police ducking behind squad cars and buildings. >> started shooting. all of the cops are getting shot. i saw cops bending over, man.

it had to be five or six cops all getting shot down. >> reporter: authorities calling it an ambush. at least two snipers in elevated positions opening fire during the rally on officers who were not wearing riot gear. >> these suspects wer positioning themselves in a way to triangulate on these officers from two different perches in garages in the downtown area and planned to injure and kill as many law enforcement officers as they could. >> reporter: for hours shocked confusion. >> i saw one of the officers land on his stomach. he was not responsive. >> reporter: the frantic search for answers as a tense standoff was under way. >> told our negotiators that the end is coming and he's going to hurt and kill more of us, meaning law enforcement, and

that there are bombs all over the place in this garage and in downtown. >> reporter: within minutes, bystanders heard a blast. by 2:25 local time, that suspect was dead. >> we just started to run and grab kids and help mothers get to somewhere safe. we didn't want anyone to get hurt. >> reporter: three other suspects were taken into custody separately. it's unclear what relationship, if any, they had to the demonstration but police say so far they've been uncooperative. again, the mayor's office just confirming that 12 officers have been shot as well as two civilians. five of those officers were killed. willie and savannah? >> thank you. we're just beginning to learn about the victims, the officers gunned down in the line of duty. nbc's jacob rascon following that part of the story this morning. jacob? >> reporter: good morning. the community and the police department is mourning five of their officers and their thoughts and prayers are with seven other officers. only one of those passed away

has been identified. an officer who joined the force in 2009 who was just married a couple of weeks ago. this morning officials with d.a.r.t., the dallas area rapid transit, confirming the death of brent thompson. the 43-year-old officer the first killed in the line of duty since d.a.r.t. formed a police department in 1989. he joined the force in 2009 and had just gotten married two weeks ago. >> brent is a great officer. served as a patrol officer which is what he was doing tonight. this is very heartbreaking for us. >> reporter: three other d.a.r.t. police officers also shot in the attack are all expected to survive. the other officers that were shot and killed worked for the dallas police department. authorities say about 800 people were at the demonstration. a reaction to the police shootings of alton sterling in baton rouge, tuesday, and philando castile in minnesota on wednesday. we're told around 100 police

officers were assigned to the dallas event. the department strategy taking a friendlier approach to handle protesters wearing summer service uniforms instead of riot gear just when they needed it most. >> seeing the courage and professionalism and just the grit to stay on scene in an area looking for suspects knowing that we are vulnerable. i can tell you, i've never been more proud of a police officer and being a part of this great noble profession. >> reporter: again, seven officers are still being treated for their injuries. we know at least three of them are expected to survive and are awaiting updates on the conditions of the officers and outside the crime scene we are see some of those here to protest to say that they showed up with anger in their hearts toward the officers and now standing in solidarity with them. savannah, willie? >> those five officers killed there to protect protesters last night. jacob rascon, last night. >> speaking from poland

overnight, the president paid tribute to the slain and wounded officers and vowed to bring the shooters to justice. nbc's ron allen is with us now from warsaw. ron, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the president is here for his final nato summit but events in dallas quickly rose to the top of his agenda. president saying the white house has reached out to authorities in dallas and offered every possible level of assistance and support. the president using very strong language to condemn what happened calling it vicious, calculate, despicable saying that while all of the facts are not known, he's reached one unmistakable conclusion. here's what we had to say about that. >> but let's be clear, there's no possible justification for these kinds of attacks. or any violence against law enforcement. the fbi is already in touch with the dallas police and anyone involved in these senseless murders will be held fully accountable. justice will be done. >> reporter: he called it a wrenching reminder of the sacrifices law enforcement makes every day on the streets of

ray ramono. we never worked in a studio together but that's my husband and we have a child who is peaches. our daughter. so after all these films, you get used to it and you watch it build over time. it's like watching a layer cake being made slowly and then when the movie comes out you finally get to eat it. >> speaking of being a layer cake, let's talk about your career for a moment. i look at you, you got your films. tv shows. you're running your entertainment company. do you have a favorite lane or is it one of those things where you like to do it all? >> i do like to do it all. i think i've always been the type of person who likes to do many things at one time. whatever i felt capable of without stretching myself too thin. i really like a challenge and i'm bored easily. if i'm doing one thing over and over and i kind of got it down, it no longer pushes me.

me from poland and all your % commentators have wished us wel% and are praying for us and i % want to say from -- from our % heart we feel that and so thank% you.% i am now going to tell you some not good news for you reporters% and that is we've got a criminal investigation going on and our % number one job is to make sure % the citizens of dallas are safe% so we are not going to tell you% anything about the suspects and% we're not going to answer any % questions on that.% we will when it's the right time.% now is not the right time.% but a lot has happened in the % last five or six, seven hours % since we talked, i guess it % was -- it was early in the % morning and i want chief brown % to give you an update on that.% i'm proud of him.

he has been working so hard % these last few hours.% we've been with families and % we've been trying to make sure % that the city is safe this % morning and i believe it is.% chief brown.% >> thank you, mayor.% we're hurting. our profession is hurting.% dallas officers are hurting.% we are heartbroken. there are no words to describe % the atrocity that occurred to % our city.% all i know is that this -- this% must stop.% this divisiveness between our % police and our citizens.%

to update you on what's % transpired since we last spoke, let me walk through the standof% that had occurred or that was % occurring at el centro on the % second floor of the college % there at downtown dallas.% we cornered one suspect and we % tried to negotiate for several % hours.% negotiations broke down, we had% an exchange of gunfire with the% suspect.% we saw no other option but to % use our bomb robot and place a % device on its extension for it % to detonate where the suspect % was.% other options would have expose%

our officers to grave danger.% the suspect is deceased as a % result of the detonating the bomb.% the reporting that the suspect % killed himself is not accurate.% we have confirmed that he has % been deceased because of the % detonation of the bomb.% our hostage negotiator did an % exceptional job getting this % suspect to talk before he died,% during the hours of negotiating% that eventually broke down.% i want to share with you some o% the comments from the suspect. the suspect said he was upset % about black lives matter.% he said he was upset about the %

recent police shootings.% the suspect said he was upset a% white people.% the suspect stated he wanted to% kill white people, especially % white officers.% the suspect stated he will % eventually -- that we will % eventually find the ieds.% the suspect stated he was not % affiliated with any groups and % he stated that he did this % alone.% the suspect said other things % that are part of this % investigation so that we can make sure that everyone % associated with this tragic % event is brought to justice.% so as the mayor said we won't % expand on -- any further on wha% other suspects we have %

interviewed or looked at or % their status until we get % further into this investigation% and get closer to a conclusion % of what and who are all % involved.% but let me just say just some % closing comments about dallas % police officers and d.a.r.t. % police officers.% some of the bravest men and % women you would ever want to be% associated with.% you see video footage after % video footage of them running % toward gunfire from an elevated% position and with no chance to % protect themselves, and to put % themselves in harm's way to mak% sure citizens can get to a plac% of security.% so please join me in applauding

these brave men and women who do this job under great scrutiny, % under great vulnerability, who % literally risk their lives to % protect our democracy.% we don't feel much support most% days.% let's not make today most days.% please, we need your support to% be able to protect you from men% like these who carried out this% tragic, tragic event.% pray for these families.% i spoke with the families of th% deceased and the injured.%

they are not having a good time% trying to deal, absorb this, % trying to understand why and % they need your prayers.% so please join us in helping us% comfort the grieving officers' % families.% and i trust that soon -- becaus% we're working very diligently i% processing the crime scene, % finding -- to find evidence to % bring any other suspects to % justice that were a part of % this, but please pray for our strength through this trying % time.% thank you.% >> i want to add that there are% public safety officials that % protect our cities and our % institutions all across america% every day that aren't police %

officers, and we lost one of % those last night, a d.a.r.t. % officer was one of the victims % and i want to just take a momen% and say the professionalism the% d.a.r.t. organization was great% and i appreciate better school % police officers, campus college% police officers standing % shoulder to shoulder with our % police officers and that's the % way we work.% chief brown told the victims' % families last night and the % police officers that he was a % man of faith and i am a man of % faith, too, and that we need % prayers and prayer is good.% so today at 12:00 at % thanksgiving square a leadershi% group of interfaith ministers %

will be leading us in that % prayer.% i would ask that if you are at % your home or at your office or % at your school to join us today% at noon in that spirit of % prayer, to bring our city % together and our country % together, to heal wounds, not % create them. thank you.% >> any -- any questions that % were not off limit?% [ inaudible question ]% >> yeah. % >> the injured officers have --% most of them have been released% there are some that will need % follow-up.% i'm not going to go into detail% of what types of injuries.% their families are being very % private for obvious reasons % right now.% but again -- excuse me.

what's the question, i'm sorry?% [ inaudible question ]% >> yes, they are doing better.% some have been released.% some of their status is they ar% still needing more treatment but they are being very private % about any further details about their health.% >> chief, you have worked and % your department has worked with% the community and have good % relations.% do you think that that % [ inaudible ] to the fact that % something like this could % happen?% >> so we have to be right 100% % of the time in the way we polic% this city.% suspects like this have to be right once.% they don't have to work very % hard to do cowardly acts like % this, to snipe at our officers % from elevated positions and to % ambush them from secreted % positions around corners.% all that hard work is not for %

naught.% this city has grown great % support for this police % department and mayor and counci% and city managers have supporte% this department and these % officers and we expect that to % continue and this community, i'% born and raised here.% dallas is a great city.% our officers will continue to % put themselves in harm's way to% protect these great citizens.% so it's worthwhile. % >> i want to brag just for a % second, if anybody hasn't heard% us say this.% this police department trained % in deescalation far before % cities across america did it.% we are one of the premiere % community policing cities in th% country.% and this year we have the fewes%

police officer-related shooting% than any large city in america.% so we are working hard to % improve and there's always room% for improvement, but we are bes% in class we feel.% >> well said. % >> talking to people -- % [ inaudible ] are you confident% that the threat is over?% >> no, i'm not going to be satisfied until we have turned % over every stone.% we've got some level that this % one suspect did do some of the % shooting, but we are not % satisfied that we've exhausted every lead and we are not going% to be satisfied until every lea% is exhausted.% so if there's someone out there% that was associated with this, % we will find you and we will % prosecute you and we will bring% you to justice. % >> as of right now it's a total% of four suspects?% >> we're not counting or %

expanding on who or how many. we are going to keep these % suspects guessing.% >> chief, can you talk about % the -- i know your first focus % right now is on the officers an% the investigation, but can you % or the mayor talk about the % impact this will have on the wa% protests or demonstrations are % conducted in the city of dallas% or is it too early?% >> i'm going to let chief brown% make any strategic decisions, % but i think it's important for % citizens to realize that we wan% to give everybody their freedom% of speech.% we've been through several % protests in the last five or si% years and they've all gone in a% safe manner. but the chief makes decisions a% times that people could be %

critical of.% deescalated too much.% do you put too much body armor % on?% if we're all being critical of % those things, just think about % today.% this is what you're risking if % you don't do it right.% and so from a policy standpoint% we are -- we believe in the % right to protest peacefully and these were peaceful protests % until this happened, but we als% have to believe in keeping our % police officers safe and i know% i'm going to redouble my effort% on that.% >> chief, how does this change % either temporarily or % permanently in the way these % police officers will arm % themselves and protect % themselves on the street?% >> again, i just want to expand% on the mayor's comments.% the freedom of speech, the freedom of expression are all %

freedoms we fight for with our % lives.% it's what makes us who we are a% americans.% so we risk our lives for those % rights and so we won't mill tar% rise our policing standards, but we will do it in a much safer % way every time, like we chose t% do it this time.% we had an adequate amount of % officers at this scene and we % were blocking traffic and doing% all the things to protect % people's right to protest and % their free speech.% we are not going to let a cowar% who would ambush police officer% change our democracy.% we are not going to do it.% our city, our country is better% than that. % >> just as a follow-up in terms% of [ inaudible ] -- direct %

response [ inaudible ] -- % [ inaudible question ]% >> can you say at all whether % this was someone that was havin% some mental stability problems % and just looking for an opening% to react or is this something % more organized?% can you talk about that?% >> all of those questions would% just be speculation to answer.% we can't get into the head of a% person that would do something % like this.% we negotiated with this person,% they seemed lucid during the % negotiation.% he wanted to kill officers and % he expressed killing white % people.% he expressed killing white % officers.% he expressed anger for black lives matter.% none of that makes sense.% none of that is a reason or % legitimate reason to do harm to% anyone. so the rest of it would just be%

speculating on what his % motivations were, we just know % what he said.% that's what he said to our negotiators. % >> hey, guys, thank you.% we still have a lot of work to % do.% we're going to take off.% >> we've been listening into th% mayor of dallas, mike rawlings,% the dallas police chief david % brown talking about the latest % on this investigation.% i misspoke earlier, 12 officers% shot, five killed, and we are % told that most of the injured % officers are recovering, some % have even been released from th% hospital.% we've also learned from this % news conference that the suspec% that was having a standoff with% police in the garage through the hours of the night was killed b% a bomb detonated by the dallas police.% that he did not kill himself % apparently as had been reported% in some quarters.% i want to go right to gabe % gutierrez our creorrespondent o% the ground there.% he mentioned that this suspect % had been speaking to the % negotiator for a time, expresse% that anger, that desire to kill%

white people, specifically whit% officers and that the suspect % also claimed to act alone and % yet we know, don't we, of three% other suspects in custody.% what did you make of that?% do you have any further clarity% >> reporter: yeah, savannah.% good morning.% this is the most detail we've % heard about what the suspect % said with negotiators at the % time and it is very significant% apparently told officers and % didn't mince words, he said tha% he wanted to kill police % officers and specifically he % wanted to kill white police % officers.% he also said that he was upset,% however, with the black lives % matter movement but he also % expressed that he was very upse% over the recent police shooting% that have happened earlier this% week in louisiana and in % minnesota.% now, there are three suspects i% custody according to what polic% had said earlier in the day, bu% in this news conference the % police chief wouldn't go into any details about that.% earlier in the day in the % overnight hours as well they ha% said that there had been at % least two snipers that had fire% on these officers, however, % according to the suspect what he

told negotiators was that he % acted alone.% i just spoke right before this % news conference with the % organizer of this rally and he % says he has absolutely no idea % why someone would do this.% that this rally was among the % largest that they have had in % the -- in the black lives matte% movement and that it had nearly% a thousand people and he was % standing near the front when at% least two officers were shot.% devastating for this community % certainly and devastating to % hear those details that he % specifically was targeting whit% police officers.% we just came from louisiana, we% were there just yesterday, drov% here overnight and what % community activists there in % louisiana had said, they were % very -- they kept asking for % calm in these protests.% there have been several protests not just in baton rouge and mik% barnicle but throughout the % country.% many people who were upset with% the issue of police violence %

they kept stressing that there % needed to be peaceful protests.% apparently this suspect decided% to take it into his own hands % and police say that he % specifically targeted these % officers in a calculated ambush% and right now there are some % questions, however, savannah, o% whether he acted alone.% police aren't ruling anything % out and they question other % potential suspects. % >> you're right to mention % you've been covering one of the% stories that has been going on % this week which was the shootin% of alton sterling in baton % rouge, louisiana and the next % day another shooting of philand% castile in st. paul.% these police involved shootings% of black men had led to protest% in cities around the country, % dallas was one of them and that% is what led to last night's event.% let me turn to jim cavanaugh, % long time official with the atf% jim, we call on your expertise % this morning as you look at what happened.% we know you are grieving with % your law enforcement colleagues% it seemed that this suspect or % suspects had some kind of % tactical expertise.% when you're talking about a %

sniper or snipers in elevated % positions earlier described as % sort of triangulating to get % after their targets. % >> that's right, savannah, but % people can pick that up quick.% you know, if they go to a % shooting range, sometimes they % practice paint ball, could be a% military veteran or prior polic% veteran or something.% it doesn't mean he is a total % s.w.a.t. tactically trained % person.% when he moved through those two% pillars he moved quite far away% from the cover.% we wouldn't do that in law % enforcement, an operator, % especially s.w.a.t. or srt % member would move right to the % pillar to stay in the cover.% but what the chief said is so % important and what the killer % says is so important.% that is his motive.% i mean, this is a premeditated % first degree murder, it's an % assassination and it's a hate % crime.% he hates police and he hates % white police. it's all of those things wrappe% up into one.% what we did not hear was were % there any other guns recovered.

the chief talked about one % shooter, but maybe some other % conspirators who might have bee% aiding and abetting.% the most unusual tactic that % s.w.a.t. command used here to % detonate a bomb to kill a suspect with one of the bomb % squad robots.% i don't recall a case in % america, although i'm not sayin% there's not somewhere someone, % but i don't recall a case using% a bomb by the police to kill a % barricaded suspect.% the last one i recall is the % move in philadelphia in 1985.% so it was very unusual, but i % think it went to the parking % garage, the location, they % couldn't get up probably the ramp and they had to use the % robot to take him out. % >> clearly felt that % negotiations had come to an end% and they felt there was no othe% option at that point.% jim cavanaugh, thank you.% gabe gutierrez before that.% to update everybody, 12 officer% shot last night in dallas, five% of them killed, two civilians % shot as well.% one suspect dead.% three others in custody.% and at noon local time in dalla%

minnesota. four officers in dallas killed were from the dpd, dallas police department. third was a dallas area rapid transit officer. his name is brent thompson. 43 years old. we learned in an interview on this show this morning that he was married two weeks ago. we learned at a press conference this morning that one suspect was killed when police sent in a robot with a bomb and detonated it. in the press conference moments ago dallas police chief talked about what happened in dallas last night. >> we're hurting. our profession is hurting. dallas officers are hurting. we are heartbroken. there are no words to describe

the atrocity that occurred to our city. all i know is that this must stop. this divisiveness between our police and our citizens. the suspect said he was upset about black lives matter. he said he was upset about the recent police shootings. the suspect said he was upset at white people. the suspect stated he wanted to kill white people especially white officers. the suspect stated he will eventually -- that we will eventually find the ieds. the suspect stated that he was not affiliated with any groups. >> all right. that's the chief there talking

about the death of four dallas police officers and another transit authority police officer in that shooting last night saying that the shooter in their back and forthwi with one man there to kill people. >> he wanted to kill police officers. and sadly they did. and that teaches us that these police officers stand between us and every day tragedy. these men that put their lives on the line last night and lost them and we have got to get to the bottom of it. more importantly, we have to lift up the families right now and lift up every officer in the united states of america. this is what happens day in and day out. >> president obama is abroad right now in warsaw, poland, for a nato summit. a short time ago he described the attack as vicious,

calculated and despicable. >> as i told mayor rawlings, i believe that i speak for every single american when i say that we are horrified over these events and that we stand united with the people and the police department in dallas. according to police, there are multiple suspects. we will learn more undoubtedly about their twisted motivations but let's be clear. there's no possible justification for these kinds of attacks. or any violence against law enforcement. >> that's the second time in just a few hours that president obama addressed the country from overseas in poland. he first talked about shootings in minnesota and baton rouge, louisiana, and then a few hours later after this dallas incident and death of five officers, he spoke again. this is the biggest loss of life of police officers in a single event since the attacks of september 11th in this country. let's go to gabe gutierrez

standing by with the latest. gabe, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. we just heard from officials here and the police chief gave the most detailed account thus far of what the suspect said to police while he was barricaded inside that parking garage this morning. specifically he said he wanted not just to kill police officers but white police officers and the suspect said that he was upset about the recent police shootings across the country. of course over the past few days, we've seen those protests in louisiana, in minnesota. there's been a lot of anger throughout the country but up until now those protests had been peaceful for the most part. a few arrests in a few parts of the country. but this suspect again said that he wanted to kill white police officers. the suspect told police that he was acting alone. he also said according to the police chief, that he was upset with the black lives matter movement. there is conflicting information. the suspect said he was acting

alone but police do have three suspects in custody. the police chief would not give anymore information about that. he said he's not ruling anything out. often these type of cases, they need to track down every lead. right now it's unclear, however, whether it was just this suspect or perhaps there was another sniper. earlier in the day, police said it had been at least two snipers that opened fire on these police officers. now, the latest numbers we get from the mayor's office is that 12 officers were shot. five of them are dead. two civilians were also shot. but survived. again, we're learning for the first time what the suspect told police during his negotiation and we also learn that early this morning some time around 2:30 or so local time, that the suspect was killed by police when they sent in a robot to detonate a bomb. 12 officers killed. 12 officers shot. five are dead this morning. back to you. >> thank you so much.

those police officers who were there to protect the protesters who were protesting the actions of police officers in other parts of the country. a terrible story out of dallas. we'll be all over it this morning. keep you updated. >> obviously something that's hard as a tv journalist is to make that transition between the story everybody is talking about and trying to put a smile on people's faces especially this early in the morning. i think we have a story that certainly could put a smile on your face this morning. it has to do with this little girl and her love of the movie "frozen," of course. this girl got a very special "frozen" theme surprise. this is 9-year-old kristen mitchell born without her right hand and wrist. she was surprised with a custom made prosthetic for her hand that featured "frozen." it was done by a group of students in new york. they spent six months developing this prosthetic. they used a 3-d printer. look how happy. these pictures are amazing. her mom maria mitchell explained that she identifies with the

character elsa because she's different and she knows that she's different from everyone else but wants to make that the reason why she's better than everyone else. which is really cool. they added snowflakes and a crowd above her name and worked with global nonprofit enabling the future. really sweet to realize you're different but there's nothing wrong with that. >> that can be a good thing. you can use that to your own advantage and power, which is -- >> the smile on her face says it all. taking a look at the headlines, the city of dallas is mourning the shooting death of five police officers after an ambush style attack last night. seven other officers were wounded as well as two civilians. dallas police chief david brown says one suspect was cornered and then eventually killed with a bomb after negotiations broke down. three other suspects are in custody. according to brown, the suspect said he was upset about recent police shootings and wanted to kill officers. he also said he was not affiliated with any groups. the data breach that hit wendy's earlier this year is far bigger than once thought. more than 1,000 restaurants were affected. wendy's said hackers were able to access card numbers, names, expiration dates and security codes. some cards were used to make fraudulent purchases at other stores. the chain is now offering help

to customers who may have been affected. within a few months, americans may be able to take direct flights to cuba from ten u.s. cities. the department of transportation has tentatively approved 20 flights day by eight u.s. airlines. atlanta, charlotte, houston, los angeles, newark, new york, miami, ft. lauderdale, orlando, and tampa are approved. a final decision is expected this summer. tonight's massive mega millions jackpot has grown more to $540 million. that's the seventh biggest lottery jackpot in u.s. history. no mega millions tickets have matched all numbers since march. odds of winning are 1 in 259 billion. prince george stole the show today at a military air show near london. the event is the largest of its kind in the world and it can be noisy especially for somebody who is not even 3 years old. george wore headphones and he and his parents, the duke and
