tell us more about this problem and how many kids are we talking about here this summer? >> well, we really appreciate you bringing us in today to talk about this problem. philadelphia and the surrounding areas have about twice the national average of hunger here. and so hunger is an issue 365 days a year and when kids are out of school for the summer, nearly 300,000 of them lose their school meals. >> so tell me how phil abundance is stepping in to fill that gap. >> phil abundance is the largest hunger organization in the area. we have programs year round. this summer, we've also instituted a new program called the kids bites lunch box program. it's generously sponsored by giant, our family foundation. we'll be doing distributions all summer long for kids 18 and under, at 8 locations throughout our nine-county service area this summer. >> i went and read a little bit on the website. i saw you guys feed a little less than 100,000 people a week. it's fascinating to see a third of those are children and 15% are elderly. you donate always think of elderly as being in that spot of people who are hungry, but you

feed all those people every single week when school is out, those kids aren't in school, they're not getting meals. >> absolutely. and phil abundance isn't the only organization in the area. there are a lot of us who are doing this really hard work to fight hunger, including our friends at the philadelphia coalition against hunger. they have great resources on their website for any families who are struggling to feed their kids this summer. and in south jersey, the south jersey food bank also has a really robust summer feeding program. we hope anybody that needs help can go find help. they can visit our website, philabundan philabundance.org, and they can also learn how to donate and get involved in the fight against hunger. >> how can people help? can they help with cash? donations of food products or volunteering or all of the above? >> all of the above. for every $1 that people donate, we're actually able to provide two meals to help feed those in need. if you skip your weekly latte or your daily latte, think about how many meals you would be able

to provide. and in addition to a monetary donation, we have volunteer opportunities all summer long for people who can help. we have a really great dpleening program at a local farm in new jersey where we harvest the excess produce and make that available to people who need help. >> one of the people, of course, that believes strongly in your mission is my colleague, trace where i davidson who's on your board and she's rounded up some of us to come to events. so we appreciate all of you do and your mission and what you stand for and what you're trying to do. >> thank you so much for your support. we really appreciate it. >> we appreciate you. for more information on phil abundan abundance's summer food assistance program, tap our nbc 10 local mobile app. good morning. i'm meteorologist erica martine with a look at what to expect for today. it's all official. we have a heat wave in effect. and temperatures in the 90s for tomorrow. rain on the way by the afternoon hours, and also tracking the

potential for some thunderstorms. i do have your hour-by-hour forecast in just one moment. so, excessive heat warning in effect until 6:00 p.m., as issued by the national weather service. conditions are very oppressive outside. topping out at 94 today and dew points already in the 70s. currently, philadelphia, a live look outside, notice how thick and soupy those clouds are. this is telling me a lot right now. the atmosphere is absolutely unstable. and as we look at our current temperatures, mainly right now, we're seeing some upper 80s and 90s. but the winds are calm. if you look at the bottom of your screen, you will see your neighborhood forecast. currently trenton, 84 degrees. wilmington currently at 87 degrees. it's all about these temperatures in the 80s and 90s, topping out in the 90s, but those dew points mainly in the 70s. here's why. notice all this moisture headed our way. some lightning strikes just to the northwest of philadelphia. we do have a cold front sliding on down, and a few low pressure systems moving from west to east. so i do think we'll see some thunderstorms soon enough.
11:49 am
but first, though, showers in store, and it looks like a messy afternoon and evening commute. a local look here. notice, everything is high and dry. but already picking up some greens right here, telling me that we have some moisture already on the approach. so soon enough, i do expect those rain showers followed by those isolated thunderstorms. and notice this wind pattern here. a little messy. we're seeing some northeasterlies, some northwesterlies. so i do think that we could get one or two strong thunderstorms, especially after 4:00 p.m., 5:00 p.m. hour by hour forecast starting at 11:00 a.m., i do want to mention this, because, of course, all the focus is on this excessive heat warning, but we have to keep in mind that the next story would be these thunderstorms sliding in. so by 2:00 p.m., notice these oranges and these reds here, telling us that we do have the threat of some stronger storms headed our way. and i do think we will see some localized flooding. by 4:00 p.m., we can see just how strong this cold front will start to get, and that's because it's so muggy right now, so anytime a cold front is

introduced, it will set off and trigger a lot of thunderstorms. so embedded thunderstorms here. philadelphia looks like it could see some rounds later this afternoon into the evening hours, as well as dover, by 8:00 p.m., everything just moving to the east, but we do have some more rain on the way. so your ten-day outlook includes temperatures today in the 90s. upper 80s and 90s for tomorrow, but we do have those thunderstorms in the forecast, especially for the afternoon hours. and tomorrow, and i do think we'll see some more rounds tomorrow afternoon. things improve by sunday, upper 80s for you. and notice how we start to remain pretty much high and dry on sunday, monday, and tuesday. of course, this is all an average as far as cloud cover goes and those expected high temperatures. it looks like we're going to trend warm for next week, possibly another heat wave. that's another big story. but keep in mind, we have already hit officially a heat wave for today with temperatures in the 90s. right now in philadelphia proper, and it looks like we do have some thunderstorms in the forecast. so be sure you follow us on social media, including twitter and facebook for more updates
