nbc 10 news starts now. right now at 6:00, help is on the way as the septa slowdown stretches into its second week. crews work to lengthen regional rail platforms in hours cars will begin running. i'm denise nakano. septa is try to make changes to ease commuter congestion. it took the rail out of service because of a structural defect. we're live at the bryn mawr septa station. >> reporter: this is one of the places where riders will be able to see some additional local service, but it is going to be another couple of hours until they can get their hands on

those new schedules for tomorrow. that's because we have just learned that septa is still working out a final agreement with amtrak to lease some of its equipment. it already has a deal with new jersey transit, with maryland transit, but it needs this last piece to get those final schedules. in a lot not far from 30th street station, nbc 10 spotted the train cars from maryland that have made their way to pennsylvania. by tomorrow, they and other leased cars will be on the rails for septa, all brought in to help ease congestion after the silver liner fives were taken out. at the cornwell heights station, workers spent this sunday getting ready for longer trains that will run here on the trenton line. >> we picked our three highest ridership stations to work on. so we'll be doing the same thing at torrencedale and levintown as well. >> reporter: today we saw three car training running, but

tomorrow there will be eight. >> we work on extending the platforms on both the inbound and outbound sides. >> reporter: the idea sto make boarding and debording faster. if this is your station in ben salem, you're used to stopping right here. but this will be removed and workers are making room for you to walk on a longer platform so you can get in and out of those longer trains. we told this rider about the work. what was last week like? >> horrible, absolutely horrible. >> reporter: he was glad to hear about the changes. >> that's awesome. >> reporter: it comes after a rough week for riders on packed cars with month schedule changes on the way. >> i need to know that i can get into work tomorrow. >> reporter: doug black's been anxious to get the details so he can plan for week two. >> just making sure i'm there at the crack of dawn and then staying until a train shows up. >> reporter: and septa is now saying that riders should check for those new schedules starting after 8:30 tonight. we're going to continue

checking, and you can get an update on our nbc 10 app. i'm lauren mayk, nbc 10 news. additional service between center city and glenside on the west trenton and war minser and you can expect 1400 extra streets from glenside to 30th street. so learn more about the septa rail changes and to get a look at the updated schedule, tap on the nbc 10 app. the final d.a.r.t. police officer injured in the shooting in dallas is now home from the hospital. officer misty mcbride was released last night. meantime, we're learning more about the gunman. a dallas police chief says micah johnson scrawled the letters "rb" in his own blood on the walls of the parking garage where officers cornered and then later killed him. investigators are looking through his things to figure out what he may have meant by that.

authorities say johnson killed five police officers and injured seven others during an attack at a protest over killing by police of black men in louisiana and minnesota. two civilians were also shot. one was a woman hit by a bullet while protecting her sons from the guntire. today she shared her story at an emotional news conference. >> my son andrew had turned around to grab me because he's in -- i guess he turned around to see where i was and he went to grab me. but i had already been shot. so i grabbed him. and pushed him into the street. >> the bullet shattered her leg. all of her sons escaped without injury. president obama will travel to dallas tuesday where he'll deliver remarks at an interfaith memorial service. the president wrapped up his european trip in spain today. while there, he said attacks on police over concerns of

injustice in the criminal justice system are doing a disservice to the cause. >> the overwhelming majority of people who are involved in the black lives matter movement, what they really want to see is a better relationship between the police and the community so that they can feel that it's serving them. >> reporter: the president said the best way to do that is to bring allies on board including police departments that are doing the right thing. now, his comments come as protests continue to grow across the country. police arrested more than 200 protesters during demonstrations in baton rouge, louisiana, and st. paul, minnesota. authorities say 27 officers were hurt during the overnight protests in st. paul. these protests follow the police shooting deaths in st. paul and baton rouge. the tension and division we've seen across the country

has affected us here at home. protesters are i hadding the streets for a fifth day in the philadelphia area. s skyforce 10 is live above one of these protests happening in lower merion. you can see demonstrators gathering here for the past hour. that's where drew smith is live tonight. drew? >> reporter: yeah. those protesters marched up the street from here, but they left one of their messages on the sidewalk. isn't confined to the city. they're feeling it out here in the suburbs, too. another day with another gathering of upset voices. this crowd gathered at a park in wynnewood holding signs that say black lives matter. their bicycles in the main line. >> reporter: anita friday is glad to see so many people come

out to show outrage at racial injustice. >> we're sitting on a powder keg. >> reporter: former philadelphia police commissioner charles ramsey called this a critical time on "meet the press" this morning and said extreme rhetoric isn't good for anybody. he says he fears something could happen at this summer's convention. >> we need to come together. we need thoughtful people to sit down and engage in dialogue but actually come up with solutions, not just fingpointing and the blame game. >> reporter: here she started forums in her church and her son launched a program at his school called students talk about race. >> when people's eyes open, their hearts open, things happen, changes happen. >> reporter: and there are several more demonstrations planned for this evening throughout our area. we'll be keeping an eye on those. few days people have been acting responsibly. they hope it stays that way. live in lower merion, drew smith. >> a montgomery county church welcomed members of the

cheltenham police department for a unity service today. it was a morning filled with music and worship at the lamont ame church in wilkins park. they hope the service will help ease tengs between police and the community. cheltenham police officer jason thompson was recognized for his dedication to protecting cheltenham residents. from our jersey shore bureau, one person is dead after two boats crashed on barnegat bay this afternoon. police say the crash involved a 36-foot speed boat and a 16-foot carolina skiff. a man on the skiff was killed. another man was taken to the hospital where minor injuries. no one on the speed boat was injured. and taking a look at our forecast, it was a beautiful day on the beach just about

governor tom wolf announced he will let the bipartisan budget compromise become law. but he did go on to say if responsible revenue package is passed monday he'll be happy to sign it. the budget includes investments and education and funding for the heroin epidemic and critical services for seniors. a comedian with a rare disability took on the steps of the philadelphia museum of art to complete an inspiring challenge. steve crowle scaled the famous "rocky" steps after receiving a challenge from a fellow comedian. crouse was born with a rare disability that keeps his arm and leg joints stuck in one position. this morning he left his wheelchair behind and used his back and neck to pull his body up all 72 steps. >> my disability and this wheelchair doesn't define who i am. my heart, my soul, my mind define who i am. so every single flight of stairs is something that i'm overcoming

in my life. >> what a positive attitude. a crowd of supporters waited at the top giving crouse a standing ovation as he accomplished his tremendous feat. now, your nbc 10 first alert neighborhood weather. >> good evening. i'm meteorologist karen thomas with a check of your first alert neighborhood forecast. temperatures on the comfortable side at this hour. 84 degrees currently in philadelphia. a little cooler up here to the north. 78 degrees in allentown. and a lot of people talking about just how beautiful it was today and comfortable with that lower humidity. we're going to expect cooler temperatures through the overnight hours. temperatures mainly dipping down into the 60s. far north, temperatures could be lower than that, upper 50s. mostly sunny and comfy conditions tomorrow. and we're seeing the clouds really sort of clear out as we move through the overnight hours. satellite radar showing that we just had the clouds around but

moving out as we take it wider. we see a large, dry circle here. that's a bubble of high pressure building into our area, and so we will stay dry overnight tonight and through our monday. we're checking a large rainmaker down here near the gulf, but that system will stay at bay as we've got high pressure our friend in place over the next two days or so. so futurecast will put into motion, and the good news here is that we're dry and we're looking for sunshine and the humidity is expected to stay low, which is really nice for tonight into our monday and all the way through our tuesday. but then look what happens to our temperatures once we get through tuesday. wow. we jump back up into the 90s and, yes, we are keeping our eyes set midweek. humidity will come back into the forecast. and we are looking for another shot anyway, there's another

heat wave as we go through wednesday, thursday, friday. that's for philadelphia and the lehigh valley tomorrow. just gorgeous conditions there. temperatures in the mid-80s as we move on through the week. then we jump up thursday, friday. we are looking at tuesday late day for the possibility of our next shower coming through, then maybe thursday we're looking at the possibility of some storms rolling through the area. >> coming up in sports, a huge night for u.s. olympic hopefuls, another chance to see sixers top pick ben sim mon. plus the phillies look to close out the first half with a w out in colorado. see how they're making out against the rockies. okay, ready? whoa!
