communities across pennsylvania, new jersey and delaware. 67 degrees right now in philadelphia. the suburbs down into the low 60s, clear skies over new jersey, 65 degrees. a little bit warmer in delaware. there's more humidity in the air. the winds shift overnight. it will be running warmer to start with. we'll have a warm afternoon. it will turn muggier, too. lehigh valley in the clear. the temperatures still falling at this hour, 64 degrees right now. we'll be heading into the 80s this afternoon. lehigh valley, the suburbs have dropped into the 50s and right now philadelphia at 67 degrees. we'll be cooling down a little bit more before that sun takes us into the 80s today. back in ten minutes to take you through the day hour by hour. first jessica boyington has your first alert traffic. >> thank you, bill. we're starting off on the schuylkill expressway where we had early morning problems. this was an overturned tractor-trailer. this happened a few hours ago. around university avenue al

lanes are blocked. there were lanes getting by a few moments ago. now they have blocked off all lanes. word of where they are letting off cars that aren't allowed to go westbound past the scene right now, not completely clear yet. we'll have updates for you as soon as that becomes available to us. westbound schuylkill expressway around university blocked. all lanes, eastbound getting by right now the other way. tracy? >> jessica, thanks for that. we're following breaking news out of cherry hill, camden county. firefighters are on the scene oç a fire at a strip mall in evesham road. the fire is now under control. no reports of any injuries. we'll follow this story all morning. tap the nbc 10 app for instant updates. new from overnight, crews put out a house fire in delaware county. nbc 10 was on this screen on lewis avenue in east lansdowne. firefighters arrived minutes later. no reports of any injuries.

philadelphia police are investigating a hotel scare in center city. someone left bomb-making material on the roof of a hotel late last night. nbc 10's matt delucia ask live in center city with more on what police count. matt? >> tracy, this is the kind of thing that has homeland security investigators involved. philadelphia police are still in front of the bellevue at this hour. take a look from skyforce 10 overnight. this was about 10:30 last night. a lot of police activity on the ground. it's what investigators found on the roof that is of biggest concern. philadelphia police took two people into custody, a man and a woman, they were taken away for questioning after being caught with smoke bombs and chemicals that police say could be used to make pipe bombs. the bellevue was not evacuated. no one inside was in any danger for police to cause that evacuation to happen here. but those two suspects, they are in custody at this hour. at this point it's unclear what those two were up to or why they

were on the roof of the bellevue at the time. of course, this is something that is still under investigation. we'll continue to follow this. live in center city, matt delucia, nbc 10 news. >> matt, thanks for that update. 4:04. we're also following a story we brought you as breaking news at 11:00 last night, threats against philadelphia police. nbc 10 learned an investigation is under way after someone made a bomb threat against three city police districts. police tell us a person stopped an officer in the 39th district and warned the officer of the threatening message on facebook. happening today, president obama, vice president biden and former president george w. bush plan to attend an interfaith memorial service in dallas for the officers killed in last week's sniper ambush. hundreds paid respects to the five officers respect at a candle light vigil last night. the five officers were killed thursday night during a march

protesting recent police shootings across the nation. the suspected gunman, mike johnson was killed in a standoff with police. yesterday, the dallas police chief said michael johnson knew what he was doing and was committed to killing officers. investigators are sifting through body cam footage, witness interviews and the gunman's personal arsenal to see what drove him to kill. the sniper lived with his mother. in her first interview, she said her son felt his military experience in afghanistan didn't live up to his expectations. >> he was very disappointed. >> i didn't see it coming. i love my son with all my heart. i hate what he did. >> funerals will be held this week for three of the police officers killed in dallas. several police departments from our area will send officers to those services. and the shootings in dallas and other cities are uniting citizens in allentown. nbc 10 was at an interfaith rally at city hall last night where the mayor joined city and

church leaders to talk about ways to improve relations between police and the community. some people we talked with said they hope the dialogue leads to action. >> there's been situations where i went to ask a police officer a question and theyç drawback on their gun. they should not be afraid to police us. >> allentown's police chief said for the first time community leaders will help evaluate the department's hiring standards. two more law enforcement officers lost their lives in the line of duty in michigan. an inmate shot and killed two bailiffs inside a courthouse in a town across the lake there chicago. an inmate being moved grabbed an officer's gun and began shooting in an attempt to escape. another deputy and a civilian were wounded before the suspect was shot and killed. a firefighter in sussex county is dead after he fell from a helicopter during a training exercise. here's a picture of the state police helicopter used during yesterday's training.

firefighters were conducting a routine exercise at the coastal airport in georgetown when the firefighter fell out of chopper. we do know he was a member of the lewes fire department. 4:07. in montgomery county, the trail of pennsylvania attorney general kathleen kane will begin next month. nbc 10 confirmed it will start august 8th at the county courthouse in norristown. the judge in kean's case set the date after a closed door conference. kane is accused of leaking secret grand jury information and lying about it under oath. she's denied any wrong doing. and happening today, emergency sirens will be testedality two nuclear plants locked on the same site in south jersey. we'll hear the noise coming from salem and hope creek generating stations. 37 sirens within ten miles of the plan the will go off from three to five minutes.

now your nbc 10 first alert weather. >> clear skies right now, the temperatures are cooling down. cape may, look at the difference compared to yesterday. the flags are blowing and the wind has shifted. that's going to make a big difference for today. we'll see the temperatures come up like they did yesterday into the 80s but humidity levels also coming up, thanks to the shift in the wind. yesterday was a northerly wind. today it's coming out of the south. that's going to bring in additional moisture. right now, a few scattered clouds, lots of sunshine, 73 at 8:00. 83 at noontime. we'll be running warmer than yesterday. by 2:00 this afternoon, 86 degrees in philadelphia. the suburbs will see lots of sunshine, clear right now, 63. still a chance it will drop into the upper 50s, just barely in the suburbs this morning. 77 degrees. look at the turn around by 10:00. you can see those winds coming up out of the south bringing in

that additional moisture from the suburbs and lehigh valley. it will be a light wind, but just enough to make a difference today. 64 currently in the lehigh valley. 80s by lunch time, mid to upper 80s this afternoon for the lehigh valley. lots of sunshine there. you'll need your sun glasses in new jersey, too. a few scattered clouds won't last. low 70s at 8:00. look at the quick warmup by noontime, 84 degrees and still climbing into new jersey while at the shore, it's going to be 70s, close to the 80 degree mark. 72 degrees at 8:00. by noontime, 77 degrees and then 78 degrees at 2:00 this afternoon. i wouldn't be surprised if some of the beach areas do hit the low 80s. just barely this afternoon. pleasant day at the shore. in delaware, it's already warmer this morning. 70 degrees compared to 60s yesterday at this time. warming to theç upper 70s at 10:00 and then it's right into the 80s with those southerly winds this afternoon.

the top. >> i think it can be hard for girls. they might think i can't be an engineer, i can't be a governor or lead a tech company. i want to dispel those rumors. >> and great message there. this day-long event happens monday, august 8th. the young women will visit places in and around philadelphia like urban outfitters, hartford funds and comcast, the parent company of nbc 10. coming up in the next hour, we'll introduce you to impressive girls who are already signed up for this tour. reporting live in center city, katy zachry, nbc 10 news. a delaware vfw post says someone destroyed its st. michael's statue on the fourth of july, took it actually and the post in newark is located right across the parking lot from a police department. an eeg tagle scout built the memorial last summer to honor fallen veterans.

the vfw leaders say they will try to repair it or buy a new one. >> just some kids walking around. didn't have anything to do and just -- it was just a stupid thought that came into their minds. i'm just sure they don't understand what this monument really means to us. >> the vfw also plans to install a surveillance camera. now from our lehigh valley bureau, an historic cemetery in bethlehem is cleaning up the work of some vandals there. take a look at these pictures, graffiti turned up over the weekend on some of the walls and grass at st. michael's cemetery. the graveyard dates back to the 1860s. police are looking for the person responsible. pennsylvania and delaware are considering a plan to tax a driver's travel. basically having them pay per mile. transportation departments in several east coast states are tossing around the idea of charging drivers a fee based on the distance they drive. officials would have to work out

how to track the mileage and charge drivers. the fee would replace the gas tax and offset the projected loss of revenue expected as vehicles become more fuel efficient. aç new pole shows a slight majority of residents support a constitutional amendment to dedicate gas taxes to the state's transportation trust fund it found that 51% of voters surveyed support the gas tax constitutional amendment. that's virtually unchanged from a poll taking in january. 57% of voters oppose casino expansion, 35% support it. both of these proposals, this one and the gas tax, will be on the november ballot. it's 4:17. it's tough enough for a sports

fishing rod on his grandfather's boat off cape cod on sunday when he got a bite. they started to reel in what he thought was a big tuna. turned out to be a ten-foot long great white shark. >> well, i did pass the rod to my dad, because it was too heavy. >> i calmly told the kids to sit in the middle of the boat down low and we took a few pictures. as soon as we could get it in close enough, we cut the line and sent him on its way. >> the shark was caught on the trolling rig for 90 minutes before he could be set free. 4:18. we are getting a warm start. it will be a warm and humid day, more so than we saw yesterday. the winds have shifted. they're light right now. we'll see them pick up and come in off the ocean. that wind will bring in more moisture. you'll feel the difference today. additional humidity today.

another heat wave brewing towards the end of the week. not today. won't start tomorrow. we'll get close to the 90 degree mark. thursday, we see the heat take off for philadelphia, the suburbs and the lehigh valley. thursday afternoon, 91 degrees. for new jersey, 88 degrees tomorrow, then into the 90s on thursday. for the shore, not going to happen. we'll see the heat wave there, staying in the 80s and that includes today. but delaware, the heat will be building over the next three days. 92 degrees, the beginning of that hot weather on thursday. already starting off warmer in much of the area. 67 degrees in philadelphia. allentown is 64 and that 70 degrees in wilmington is 7 degrees warmer than yesterday. there are some cooler spots in delaware. 60s right now in harmony hill, marshallton. wilmington is 71 degrees and 60s now for lewes. it's rehoboth beach that's also in the low 70s. that moisture tends to make the temperatures warmer in the morning. that's what we're seeing this

morning. what we're not seeing is much in the way of clouds or showers. you might see scattered clouds like we did yesterday. mainly we'll be watching the temperatures going up. 87 degrees this afternoon, partly to mostly sunny skies. tomorrow the clouds will be building with a chance of some showers and thunderstorms, especially north and west of philadelphia. near 90 degrees tomorrow and into the 90s starting thursday. here's your heat wave. thursday, friday, saturday, the hottest coming thursday and friday. humidity will be quite high for both of these days, if not a little bit higher on friday. by saturday, the temperatures come down a little bit. there is a possibility we'll stay below the 90 degree mark on sunday with showers and thunderstorms making that happen. monday and tuesday, upper 80s, typical summer heat. that continues for wednesday and thursday with a chance of more much needed rainfall. >> bill, thanks.

we're still watching that problem on the schuylkill westbound at university city. jessica boyington has an update. what are you seeing? >> all lanes are blocked right now. headed westbound on the schuylkill expressway. these are actually our cameras from grays ferry and university exit that are zoomed in on the scene right here. you can see all lanes completely blocked off to westbound traffic. if you're heading westbound on the schuylkill expressway, you may have to pay attention right now. you need alternates to get by. they're diverting currently all traffic off around vare avenue. not a lot of traffic in the area. it's still really early. hop back on the schuylkill that way. otherwise, if you want to bypass this altogether, take 95 and hop back on the schuylkill expressway that way. >> speaking of 76, now something to think about on your morning commute. drivers on 76 might get another lane of traffic. george spencer found out it

d'andre lindsay is being remembered. here's the spot where d'andre jumped into the water on thursday night but never surfaced. crews pulled the body from the water about an hour later. d'andre's family started a go fund me page to help pay for funeral costs. a big turnout in honor of a teenage soccer star who suddenly died last year in south jersey. family members of tara lemanowicz died from a medical condition a week before she was to start playing soccer for the eastern regional high school varsity squad. she was at a sleep overparty with her teammates. yesterday would have been her 15th birthday. it's heartwarming, it helps me get over her birthday. it's a tough day. probably leading up to it is tough. this is a real great thing. i'm so happy.
